Dear school community, To coincide with the 2010 Vinnies Winter Appeal the St Vincent de Paul Society is encouraging schools to take part in a unique and exciting experience: the Vinnies School Sleepover. As a school community you can do more than just provide a hand out this winter; together we can increase awareness of homelessness issues. On any given night between the 19th and 23rd July your school can simulate what life must be like for those in our community without a place to call home by implementing a school sleepover for one night. For your school this will: • • • • •
Encourage students to connect with an evident and increasing need in your local community Challenge your school community to make a difference to those living rough within your local area Raise awareness to the multiple underlying issues related to homelessness, in particular youth homelessness. Allow students to advocate and be a voice for those in need in your community and raise funds to show your school that you can make a difference this winter Connect with pre-existing homeless services within your community, example Homeless vans or Social Justice Groups in your area.
We have provided a School Sleepover Kit and registration form on our website and we will soon be uploading a liturgy and some teaching resources for your reference. All these materials can be found at http://www.vinnies.org.au/sleepover . Rises in unemployment and private rental costs has caused many individuals and families to be forced into a position of disadvantage, and for the first time understand the harsh realities of homelessness and poverty. The discomfort of sleeping on the streets or in a place that they cannot call home is just part of the lesson we hope to impart upon community members and school communities. This year we will be urging schools throughout the Brisbane Archdiocese to be involved in this unique initiative. However, if you are unable to coordinate a School Sleepover event this year we would still like to recognise the efforts and generosity of your school being involved in the annual Winter Appeal. Your efforts no matter how small goes a long way to helping those in need and are greatly appreciated. For further assistance, information or resources to take part in this initiative please contact Brett Johnson/Cassandra Bull – State Youth Facilitator’s by phone 3010 1000 or by email youth@svdpqld.org.au On behalf of those we have the privilege to serve I thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Brian Moore State President
