PUBLISHER’S FOREWORD

The ultimate celebration of success from the White Island… Ibiza eludes easy description. In equal measure it is glamorous, upbeat and luxurious, at the same time rustic and unpretentious. For every high-energy event there is an equal and opposing place of sanctuary; hence the eclectic cast of characters the island draws to its shores. The jet-set has long kept Ibiza on their itineraries as a favourite port-of-call. For a knowing minority, it is a place of seclusion away from the cares of the world. For clubbers, it is the most happening scene on the planet. Spiritual seekers crave its deep tranquillity. Indeed, Ibiza is many things to many people. One visitor’s experience may be the polar opposite of another´s. Yet both can be genuine, full and complete. The ‘Spirit of Ibiza’ is a breeding ground for creativity. Free from the restrictions of conventional society, the island is today spoken of in the same breath as major ‘capitals’ like London, Paris, Milan and New York. Yet, none of these cities compare to Ibiza’s scale of freedom and beauty. Its very soil is both fertile and inviting; its international acclaim is the result of an exciting blend of tradition, diversity and innovation. As the island’s cosmopolitan image reaches further across the world each year, there has never been a better time to celebrate its most influential success stories. Published through the Global Village platform, ‘Best of Ibiza Vol.1’ joins over 50 regions in the international ‘Best of ’ coffee-table book series, and presents a rich showcase of the people and places that uphold the island’s profile today. By honouring its roots and embracing the future, we welcome you to discover Ibiza like never before. Throughout these pages, in the course of stories and interviews, we share its successes and sincerely hope to make a contribution towards the preservation of an island – a culture – that is truly one-of-a-kind. Collective Conservation With Executive Director of the Ibiza Preservation Fund, Sandra Benbeniste

I

biza’s rapid transition from a localised farming economy into one driven by tourism has generated a huge demand for land, water and energy across the island. In 2008, the Ibiza Preservation Fund (IPF) was set up by a group of concerned individuals in response to this unsustainable growth. Today, it works to conserve Ibiza’s natural beauty and landscapes, helping to strengthen local environmental organisations as the island works together towards a more sustainable future. Born in Barcelona, Executive Director of the Ibiza Preservation Fund, Sandra Benbeniste (pictured, above), has been visiting Ibiza since she was young and moved to the island to enjoy a different way of life. “My family has a strong connection to the island and I’ve been coming here since I was a child,” she says.

“In the 1970’s, the beaches were paradise and the countryside idyllic, but from one year to the next hotels were being built on the coast and many rural areas were transformed by urbanisation. Many of the places I loved soon became unrecognisable.”

Concerned at the change and thinking there was nothing she could do, Sandra stopped visiting Ibiza for some years. After studying environmental law and development she travelled to Central America, where she worked on sustainable development projects for the United Nations and other NGO’s. Returning to Ibiza after an absence, Sandra realised there was still so much to preserve and protect. “When I discovered the Ibiza Preservation Fund, I was happy to learn there were many generous people willing to give back to the island.”

“As the IPF director, it is a privilege to be able to work with dedicated people and local partners to make a positive impact on the place you live and its environment. It has made me a great believer in the mantra; think global, act local,” she says. The conservation of Ibiza and Formentera’s countryside and marine areas are the IPF’s main focus. The charity raises funds and works closely with local partners to carry out projects that help protect the land and sea of both islands. Initiatives include the protection of the UNESCO World Heritage fields of Marine Posidonia, which are at risk from boat’s anchors and wastewater discharge, as well as the recovery of threatened seahorse populations, and habitats of the critically

The IPF is committed to preserving Ibiza’s exceptional beauty & natural value endangered Balearic Shearwater bird. Organic farming and the consumption of locally grown crops like almonds are promoted by the charity, and too the preservation of native animal breeds including the Porc Negre (the black pig). By mobilising people from around the world who care about the Islands of Ibiza and Formentera, the IPF is able to champion grass-roots campaigns and find solutions to environmental issues. When oil prospecting in the Mediterranean Sea, close to the Balearic archipelago, became a major threat to the island’s environments; the IPF helped to create and fund Alianza Mar Blava (Blue Sea Alliance). The Alliance united over 60 public and private institutions for the first time ever, successfully stopping oil exploration in the area with its collective efforts.

17

Using the structure set out within the Alianza Mar Blava partnership model, the IPF has also helped to set up a ‘water alliance’ to bring together key players from different sectors of the island’s economy. The Alliance for Sustainable Water Management in Ibiza and Formentera was created in 2016. Its aim is to promote the integrated management of freshwater and advance solutions to the island’s water challenges. One of the alliance’s first activities was a water-saving campaign. Using the slogan ‘Enjoy the Island, Save Water’, visitors are encouraged to value and conserve water. As well as better management and a stronger culture of preserving the island’s water, the IPF promotes technologies to harvest and recycle it, too.

For Sandra and the IPF, the future of Ibiza is dependent on various players on the island working together to achieve truly sustainable outcomes. “Sometimes it can seem overwhelming because of all the issues that the island has to cope with,” Sandra says. “With a lack of fresh water, increasing energy use and a transport system under pressure, we cannot continue to grow indefinitely as our infrastructure simply does not have the capacity.” “Although Ibiza faces many challenges, I’m optimistic we can respond in time to reconcile these pressures and conserve the island’s natural beauty and heritage,” she concludes. “In the future, I would love to see Ibiza become a model of sustainability and renewable energy. Many share this vision and by working together, this can be achieved.”

Casita Verde The Greenheart of Ibiza

I

dyllic in both its setting and ethos, Casita Verde is truly one of Ibiza’s hidden gems. Situated in a beautiful valley close to the village of San Josep, here lies a quite fascinating ‘experimental centre’ for the study and application of sustainable living practices in Ibiza.

The headquarters and flagship project of Greenheart Ibiza, Casita Verde began as nothing more than a tiny house with a few rustic stables and storerooms. Today, it is a truly admirable on-going project lying nestled in the hills of Ibiza’s countryside. With sublime views of the Mediterranean across a distinctly traditional landscape, Casita Verde is a raw showcase of resource conservation in action. Its popularity amongst visitors to the island continues to grow each year as it rapidly expands from its humble roots. Consistently moving towards complete self-sufficiency, Casita Verde has been open to the public every Sunday since April 2002. Every week it hosts a fundraising event, where visitors are invited to become lifetime members of the Ibiza Ecological Association by paying a small donation. New members are offered a plate of fresh vegetarian food and then invited to a free three-hour tour of the site, where they can see first hand how the use of alternative energy and sustainable living practices are within reach of every one of us.

‘Synergy into action’ is what brings Chris Dews his daily energy supply, as one of an escalating number of active individuals ‘flying with the angels in-front of the change...’

B

orn in Yorkshire, England in 1953; founder of Casita Verde, Chris Dews (pictured, left), arrived in Ibiza in 1985 after spending 13 years travelling the world as a radio officer in the British Merchant Navy. Like many, he quickly fell in love with the island and soon felt the need to help conserve this natural gem for future generations to enjoy.

After becoming particularly disturbed by the litter problems and environmental damage caused by uncontrolled tourism expansion, Chris founded the local Friends of the Earth group in 1989, together with a group of like-minded people. The group acted to clean up the island’s beaches and woodlands and sought to help persuade residents to look after their natural heritage in a more eco-friendly way. In 1993, Chris founded the Casita Verde ‘model ecology’ centre using a small rented house near San Josep, which soon became the headquarters of the environmental study group ‘Ibiza Ecologic’. As a result of being involved in a number of other commercial ecological centres and initiatives, Chris decided to re-focus his attention on improving the facilities and potential of Casita Verde. With the help of friends, Emanuel Kuntzelman and Laura Rose, from the Madrid based ‘Foundation for the Future’, plus a number of other active volunteers, Chris began to develop a ‘Greenheart strategy plan’, which would eventually include the whole island in a new and more ambitious project as they looked towards the future. Chris is presently local administrator of Foundation for the Future; he is president of the study group ‘Ibiza Ecologic’, main coordinator for the Ibiza branch of the now worldwide ‘Greenheart International’ organisation, and director of the model-ecological centre at Casita Verde. He also makes a substantial contribution to the evolution of local Ibiza initiatives, designed to create positive change and environmental security. Casita Verde is operated by the NGO, Ibiza Ecologic, developing various programs related to environmental education in Ibiza since 1996. This on-going project offers a hands-on volunteer programme, actively promoting the everyday use of renewable energy (such as solar and wind power), and includes eco-showers, compositing toilets, vegetable gardens using recycled water, unique alternative living spaces made with natural and recycled materials (such as a tree-house and a bottle-house office), a Gaia centre, a lime-kiln house, an underground cave palace; as well as various other interesting and practical ecological installations.

There are currently over 12,000 members of the Ibiza Ecologic NGO from all over the world – a number that continues to grow as this project blossoms. With a similar site now in action in Granada on mainland Spain, Casita Verde is simply an inspiration; an open invitation for us to discover our inner green heart, both on the White Island and beyond.

Can Tanca

The Terravita Home

With company co-founder Jason Watson-Todd

T

he balance between comfort, style and sustainability; Can Tanca is a ground-breaking project created by Ibiza’s Grupo Terravita. Constructed in 2016, it is the home of the group’s co-founder, Jason Watson-Todd. A model for global change, this unique building in the countryside of San Lorenzo is all set to become one of the most sustainable houses on the planet.

Tell us about your personal connection with Ibiza.

“I was born and bred on the island. My mum came here as a raving hippy in 1962 on a sailing trip and pretty much never left. My upbringing was very magical; wild and free. In those days, nobody had any money and there was a real community spirit about. I know the island inside out and it is a very unique place. It’s so small but always has a couple of surprises – a place where you could spend your whole life.”

What is the story behind your company, Grupo Terravita? “Terravita was born out of an idea which came about whilst I was studying landscape design in England. On my return to Ibiza, I asked my older brother Julian to join me in creating a company. Together we founded Terravita, which originally started out as just one company – Terravita Gardens. We started off with just a shovel and a battered old Lada! Over the years, we grew bigger and stronger. Initially we were solely a landscape gardening business. Today, we have five separate companies under the ‘Grupo Terravita’ name: Terravita Gardens, Terravita Construcciones, Terravita Renovables, Terravita Mantenimiento, and Terravita Studio.” Tell us about the story behind your home, Can Tanca. “Can Tanca arose from a passion of mine of always wanting to do things as best as possible. The opportunity came up for me to buy a plot of land and I wanted to build a home that would be as energy efficient and environmentally friendly as possible. With Can Tanca, we (Terravita) want to show that you can build luxury homes that are energy efficient. A lot of problems with global warming are due to inefficient houses. The aim with Can Tanca is to set a standard.”

What makes Can Tanca one of the most sustainable houses in the world? “Can Tanca produces more energy than it consumes and is completely off-the-grid. We decided to build a ‘Passivhaus’ home, which is the strictest energy efficient governing body around, and then we opted to go for the ‘BREEAM’ certificate too – an English certification body which is extremely strict. So far, Can Tanca has the ‘Passivhaus Premium’ certificate and is well on its way to becoming a ‘BREEAM Exceptional’ home too. If you combine the BREEAM Exceptional and Passivhaus Premium certificates, Can Tanca will be the first house in the world to achieve these two.” How does its energy consumption differ to a normal home? “We try to reduce water consumption as much as possible, so the types of taps and showers used are key. For example, the taps in the bathroom consume 90% less water than conventional taps. 100% of the water in the home is recycled and reused. We collect all used water, purify it and re-use it in the garden. To achieve the BREEAM Exceptional certificate, there is a strict control on all environmental aspects.” Do you feel that one day all houses will follow the same model as Can Tanca? “I think they will. A European Law which will be introduced in the year 2020 will demand that all buildings hit a certain energy efficiency. Clients are already getting in contact with us to build houses in Ibiza that follow this model. Can Tanca is setting the trend for houses of the future and there is no way back.”

Piratas de Es Vedrà I

n recent years, Ibiza’s fame has reached unimaginable heights. A once peaceful paradise has been transformed into a playground for people from all walks of life. As the world arrives throughout the year en-mass, they are ready to indulge in the many pleasures that this beautiful, hedonistic island has to offer.

Naturally, the most idyllic places in Ibiza are feeling the strain that an upsurge in visitors during the high-season brings. The spectacular Es Vedrà rock (pictured, above), sits 2km off the island’s western coast. Shrouded in myths and legends, some say it is the third most magnetic place in the world. It is the crown jewel in Ibiza’s treasure chest; a natural gemstone that, along with the protected reserve that surrounds it, has become increasingly overcrowded during high-season.

Piratas de Es Vedrà is the name of a collective group of active individuals that work and live on the island. Together they work to educate visitors about the importance of preserving Ibiza’s natural essence; specifically within the area surrounding Es Vedrà and Atlantis. (Another popular site in this area where rock was quarried to build the walls of Dalt Vila many centuries ago; where today lies a multitude of unusual rock formations and natural pools.) Albert Tretze (pictured, above) is a member of the ‘Piratas’ and has been on the island permanently for over 10 years, spending much of his time living inside a cave (pictured) directly facing the famous rock. He knows this area better than most and has seen first-hand the change in Ibiza. “We (the Piratas) are not an official organisation who can enforce rules. We are pirates - good pirates – who want to help and teach people,” he says. “In the last years, numbers to Es Vedrà and Atlantis have doubled and many people arrive at these sacred places unprepared,” says Albert. “Everyone is welcome in Ibiza, but 20 or 30% of people who visit this area, do not care about the rubbish that they leave behind or the effect that they may have on nature. There have been injuries and even deaths here because people arrive unprepared for the risks involved.” (Access to Atlantis involves a trail down a steep mountain covered in loose rock and bushes.) “Ibiza is a place of high vibrations where people come to be inspired,” he says. “The Piratas try to spread both social and natural preservation on the same level here. We want everyone to show respect and love so that we can move forward and make a change together.”

Cova de Can Marçà – The historic caves of San Miguel First discovered by smugglers who used to hide contraband goods such as coffee and tobacco inside, the Can Marçà cave, located in the north of Ibiza by the port of San Miguel, is a natural spectacle and one of the island’s major tourist attractions. Here, smugglers would hoist their stash from an opening at a height of 8–10 metres from the sea, using small boats to approach the cliff-face and prevent detection. Today, black and red marks that were painted to signpost a way out in case of emergency are still visible inside the cave’s depths.

Fomento del Turismo

F

omento del Turismo de la Isla de Ibiza (Island of Ibiza Tourism Development), is an association founded by a group of forward-thinking, local individuals who, in the year 1933, set themselves the task of stimulating, promoting and developing Ibiza’s budding tourist industry at its very beginning.

Alejandro Llobet, Joan Villangómez, Bartolomé Rosselló, César Puget, and a Mr. Rossi, originally founded what was then known as Junta Local del Turismo, (the local tourist board). With the support of the City Council and the active involvement of shop owners, hoteliers and local councils, a commission was formed to draw up a set of draft regulations. On the 12th October 1933 under Spain’s Second Republic, Fomento del Turismo was created as a non-profit organisation that would take on the role of delivering Ibiza’s essence to the world. It was not until the 1st June 1958 that commercial flights began operating to and from Ibiza’s airport. This was a real boost for tourism, especially between the years 1960 and 1979, when visitor figures rose dramatically. Ibiza was becoming an internationally renowned brand; the ‘White Island’s’ fame reaching further and further each year. The period between 1965 and 1973 saw the celebrated ‘hippy movement’ arrive and firmly place Ibiza on the world map as an established tourist destination. There has been no looking back since.

Promoting Ibiza to the world since 1933

From 1975 onwards, huge demand for hotel accommodation from tour operators resulted in another giant step forward for tourism, triggering the construction of the vast majority of the hotels that are seen on the island today. The emergence of nightclubs in the 1980’s heralded the subsequent rise of the notorious clubbing culture; all this adding dimension to Ibiza’s image as the ultimate holiday island. ‘Adlib’ fashion, a brand created and supported by Fomento del Turismo with its free and easy approach to clothing, was another significant factor in promoting Ibiza. Adlib reflected the island’s spirit and charm with a recognisable style and elegance. Fomento del Turismo today promotes improvements to basic infrastructure, such as better communications with developing tourist areas. The opening of Ibiza’s airport to international flights in 1968 championed this support and commitment. Members of the association currently range from hoteliers, to representatives from all sectors of society. Financial contributions made by private individuals are invaluable for covering the association’s operating costs. Ex-official members of the Management Committee include representatives of institutions such as the local council, the Balearic Tourist Board (now the Balearic Tourist Agency), the Cámara de Comercio, and the Small and Medium Sized Enterprises of Ibiza and Formentera.

For the last 80 years, Fomento del Turismo has continued to promote the various aspects that make Ibiza one of the world’s strongest and most distinctive tourism brands. Its magazine, Ibiza Luxury Destination, promotes the island as a luxury location. The Ibiza Convention Bureau involves promoting Ibiza as a destination for meetings, incentives, conferences and many other events. Today, the association works tirelessly to provide a forum for open debate and business collaboration, continuing to stimulate those from all economic and social sectors to collaborate together in showcasing Ibiza as a thriving global destination. One that is proud to invite the world to its shores throughout the year.

The

Punta Arabi Hippy Market

The origins of Ibiza’s first hippy market date back to the year 1973, when the Punta Arabi hotel offered the newly arrived hippies a space to sell their handicrafts and products; where items that they had brought from around the world could be sold to the few tourists staying in the hotel at the time.

T

he beauty of Ibiza, with its magical secret corners and spectacular weather, captivated the hippies in the 1960’s. A paradise island, still unknown to the mass demands of tourism, it became a place that many chose to settle upon; a haven for those seeking to lead an authentic life in a creative culture that instilled a sense of freedom in its people.

Maggie with her delicious pastries. A lady from Formentera selling hand-knitted sweaters made from her sheep’s wool. A young boy selling puppies. Children exchanging toys; another selling jewellery from India. These were the first sellers at the very beginning of business at the Punta Arabi Hippy Market in Es Canar in Ibiza’s north. Its journey began with just five stalls.

The pace of violins, guitars and ‘jam sessions’ enlivened the setting in those early days. The hippies would put their stalls on the ground under trees, displaying their products on draperies. Over the years, this now iconic market has become a hotspot for any visitor to Ibiza; a must-do for people from all walks of life. Today, it has over 500 stalls and in the height of summer, the continuous cycle of several thousand people streaming upon this place of pilgrimage can be quite a sight.

Over 40 years of history on the White Island

Every Wednesday, from April until October, the beautiful grounds of the Punta Arabi hotel become a melting pot of different cultures from all over the world. Craftsmen and artists offer a variety of their most unique creations including fashion, jewellery, natural cosmetics; original items brought from far and wide. Surrounded by performances from musicians, artists and living statues, the most unique and unforgettable atmosphere is created here. The market’s growth has been huge, however its essence stays true to this day. The fundamental value of ‘joy’ remains as a diverse blend of people mix together to create a weekly occasion that is adored by visitors and treasured by locals alike. With live performances and shows, a colourful flea market in the multicultural tent, and a newly established playground for children; the Punta Arabi Hippy Market is an unforgettable experience. An unspoilt piece of Ibiza’s history that is truly instrumental in upholding its charm, the essence of a timelessness that so many adore.

t has been over 20 years since Libro Azul first opened its doors to Ibiza. Over the years, this charismatic book shop has remained a gemstone in the heart of the island. More than just a place to find books; this creative space located in the charming village of Santa Gertrudis, is the pride and joy of current owner Sophia Brucklacher (pictured, above).

“Running a book shop on an island in our digitalised century is a romantic dream,” Sophia says. “It is a dream kept alive by the people who love the feeling of a new book in their hands and by those who can feel deeply moved by the turning of a page. Libro Azul is a place where you can visit to be inspired, and have real-life exchanges with volumes of extraordinary literature. We have clients who come in directly after landing, making us very happy and impressing us with their loyalty,” she says. Despite its ‘old-school’ essence, Libro Azul keeps up with the fast pace of the moving world. Every week, Sophia hosts some kind of special event. From book launches & readings, fairytale clubs for children and breakthrough seminars; to fascinating workshops, meditations & yoga classes. “We welcome all within the concept of a sustainable, loving & cultural community life,” she says. “I have noticed that the shop has become a local hangout spot for the creative and liberated minds of the island. It is a pleasure to celebrate the quality of thought in such bohemian company... The readers are what make Libro Azul so magical.” Libro Azul is the only international bookshop on the island and follows a purely traditional format. Sophia compares it to the Parisian Shakespeare and Company. It is a space that is bustling with character. A place where stories can be found hidden in every little corner. The store offers books about every practical subject needed to thrive on the island. From sustainable living, gardening, local cuisine and secret beaches; to art-house novels and ‘how to build a tree house’. For those who want to add flair through literature; Libro Azul will deliver.

Archaeology & “The White Island”

B

y the turn of the 20th century, archaeology had become a worldwide fascination, and nowhere was that interest felt as keenly as on Ibiza. With islanders reading the works of Isidor Macabich and pondering their remarkable ancient heritage, they realised that marvellous treasure must lie beneath the earth, if one only scratched the surface.

The gears were put into motion in the year 1903 when two private citizens, Artur Pérez-Cabrero (1870-1916) and Joan Román (1849-1910), organised the first archaeological excavation of Ibiza’s rich soil. Logically, the site they chose was the Puig des Molins necropolis (pictured, above right), and the remains they uncovered were the grave goods of Ibiza’s earliest cultures. Among the curiosities retrieved from the crypts were terracotta bowls (used to provide sustenance for the departing souls), amulets and figurines of deities (meant to protect the soul on its journey), painted ostrich eggs (a symbol of resurrection in the other world), and oil lamps (believed to keep the flame of life aglow in the great beyond). The quality and quantity of the finds exceeded all expectations. To their credit, Román and Pérez-Cabrero had the foresight to institutionalise the excavation before the event by creating the Sociedad Arqueológica Ebusitana. Over the course of the next four years, the society carried out two more excavations (those of Illa Plana and es Culleram), astutely donating all finds to the Spanish state in the hope that a museum might be established.

Their plan met with success and in 1907, the Archaeological Museum of Ibiza and Formentera was founded by national decree. Meanwhile, Josep Costa (1876-1971), a young artist living in the midst of this headway, felt deeply impressed by his island’s new cachet. The turn of the century found him working as a political satirist and caricaturist in Barcelona, where he became an influential advocate of his homeland’s rich heritage. Significantly, he struck up a close friendship with the bohemian writer and painter, Santiago Rusiñol (1861-1931), the ideologue of Barcelona’s modernist movement. Enticed by Costa’s tales of enigmatic relics and ancient cults, Rusiñol could not resist the lure of the island and the two set sail for Ibiza in the summer of 1912. At the top of their agenda was an exploration of the Puig des Molins necropolis, Ibiza’s ‘city of the dead’. Here, pottering about like the amateurs that they were, they uncovered a trove of millenarian objects, many of which now form part of the museum’s permanent collection. Costa delighted in portraying his island to fellow savants as an ancestral land containing a deep magic, a magic that could not be dissected and analysed by means of rationalism. An attitude which, a century later, still feeds into the esoteric vein that has become so characteristic of Ibiza. As for Rusiñol, he was smitten by Ibiza from the word go. It was upon sailing into harbour that summer morning that he spontaneously came up with the nickname, ‘White Island’. His first sighting of Dalt Vila has since become immortalised in the following lines:

Photo: Xescu Prats: www.ibiza5sentidos.es

“The impression was dazzling. One is coming from the blue, a blue so intense it looks almost like a majolica, and then suddenly, as if a ray of light had been thrown across your vision, you see before you a cluster of houses of such limpid whiteness that they virtually open your eyes to an unknown harmony. Eivissa, like a sunflower, climbs upward, and her houses, stacked one above the other, all seem to be struggling to get to the bright light at the top; for the light that you see when you enter her harbour is so very white and so very luminous that all the other towns you can remember seem to live in darkness. From creamy white to agate white, from the white of seagulls to that of snow, from the white of swans to that of marble, each house has its very own white, giving it definition. When all are taken in at a glance, they look much like a music box tuned to a mysterious rhythm in quarter tones, let us say, in the key of G. With the sea reflecting up on them, and the houses in turn reflecting back onto the sea, they are bathed in a jewel-like sheen that can be seen nowhere else.” (First published in La Esquella de la Torratxa, Barcelona, 1912). And thus, with this, the myth of the ‘White Island’ was born. Written by Emily Kaufman 37

The

Winds of Trade

By Emily Kaufman & Dominique Sanson

T

rade is the motor of history. Since the Bronze Age, it has driven the development of peoples and societies. Ibiza, though small, holds an impressive pedigree in this regard, its commercial activity reaching back nearly three millennia. Inevitably, a trajectory of this length will exhibit peaks and troughs; but, in the flow chart of the centuries, the island’s upswings have reliably followed its downturns.

Ibiza entered the historical record when the Phoenicians brought the first flush of civilisation to its shores in the 7th century BCE. These mighty traders had long used the island as a layover on their routes to and from the Straits of Gibraltar. Over time, they also realised Ibiza’s strategic potential as a base from which new trade routes could be launched to eastern Iberia, Catalonia and southern France.

With these prospects in mind, the Phoenicians set up camp at Sa Caleta circa 625 BCE and, some 40 years later, founded Ibosim, the settlement destined to become the walled city. During the 7th century, the island primarily functioned as a staging post where mineral ores mined in Tartessos (today’s Andalusia), could

be processed into more compact ingots. Over the course of the 6th century, as Carthage steadily took over Phoenician routes, Ibosim flourished as one of the few true cities of western antiquity. By the 5th century, it had become a bustling distribution centre as well as a manufacturer and exporter of goods in its own right. Wares from all over the Mediterranean – Egypt, Greece, Sardinia, Etruria, Sicily and North Africa, passed through Ibosim and were channelled on to the mainland. Conversely, the island’s exports are attested to by the wealth of ‘Ibicenco’ amphorae and potsherds found throughout the Mediterranean, indicating that trade was abundant and ongoing. Following the close of the second Punic War in 201 BCE, Ibiza’s importance dwindled in direct proportion to the rise of Rome. Under Roman rule, most trade transferred to Majorca and Ebusus was forgotten about. Even the Vandals (455 CE) and the Byzantines (535 CE), the island’s next takers, did not pay much attention to their conquest, and little archaeological evidence of their occupations remain. Two dark centuries ensued, the 8th and the 9th, followed by the Moorish conquest of 902. Islamic rule, lasting three centuries, left a distinctive mark on Yabisha. The most

palpable aspect of that legacy lives on in the island’s rural architecture as well as its irrigation systems, water mills and other forms of hydraulic expertise; innovations which were carried over by the Catalans after their conquest in 1235. For centuries, salt was the mainstay of island commerce, both in terms of volume and continuous demand. Every period of rule or occupation – from prehistoric times to the advent of tourism, exploited this resource to a greater or lesser degree. It was salt that ensured a source of public funds and salt that continually drew in cargo boats to the shores, keeping Ibiza on the map even in the darkest eras. The only intervals devoid of salt trade were those in which plague had struck the island. Under Catalan rule, the second most traded commodity in Ibiza was horrifically, slaves. While slavery was rife in antiquity, it is most clearly attested to here during Medieval and Early Modern times. Generally, the victims were islanders and the perpetrators pirates, but slave trade was a two-way street. On the one hand, pirates came to Ibiza with alarming regularity to kidnap the able-bodied for sale on distant shores. On the other hand, Ibicenco corsairs, especially in the 17th century, sallied forth to capture human booty, selling the same to Dalt Vila’s rich landlords. Piracy was finally eradicated by local corsairs in 1830. As the century advanced, Ibiza attempted to catch the wave of progress that was sweeping over Europe, an objective which would bear fruit, but not without effort. Before celebrating that triumph, let us briefly consider the stagnation of the previous century. When Bishop Abad y Lasierra came to the Pitiusas in 1785, the inhabitants of both islands numbered only 14,000. Industry was virtually non-existent. The countryside was manifestly underdeveloped at this time, too. There were no qualified soldiers, wheelwrights or saddler’s. Common items such as shoes, plates and roof tiles had to be imported. Money flowed out, little flowed back. The salt industry, at that time owned by the Spanish state, was abysmally underexploited. This period’s only saving grace was shipbuilding, which saw a pitch of activity from 1765 to 1860. But, with the advent of steam boats, wooden ships were rendered obsolete. Through it all, Ibicencos stuck to the task of modernisation. Finally, the pace of trade quickened in the latter part of the century, ushering the island into an economic resurgence. Salt remained, and almonds became the mainstays of this revival. Ibiza also had an array of natural resources which found outlet in the markets of the day. Its woodlands produced timber and charcoal; its farmlands and orchards yielded almonds, figs, carob, potatoes, legumes, eggs and animal fodder, all of which were exported to the mainland. Fish was an obvious commodity, while livestock such as sheep and pigs also gained currency. Even the lead mines of s’Argentera in Sant Carles were briefly reopened for the first time since Roman rule, but, due to meagre ore deposits and large amounts of subterranean water within them, the venture proved untenable and after 40 years, the mines were closed. Two World Wars intervened, temporarily depressing the island’s economy again, but starting in the 1950’s, tourism began its timid return as Ibiza realised the sun as a sell-able commodity. The rest, as they say, is history. 39

Medieval Festival Every second weekend of May in Ibiza is a period of great celebration, as a tribute to the many cultures that have settled on the island over the centuries is played out. Inside the thick walls of the fortified old town of Dalt Vila, the streets are taken back in time and history relived as the island commemorates its World Heritage status with the annual Medieval Festival.

27 years of musical history

pace Ibiza was the breakaway nightclub. An institution, free from constraints, this was a stage upon which dreams were turned into reality every summer – non stop – for 27 years. Touching the hearts of millions with its consistent delivery of sensorial and musical freedom, the legacy of Space Ibiza is unrivalled. Quite simply this is, and always will be, the greatest nightclub that the world has ever seen.

Space’s story is that of a white, elegant and harmonious building by the sea in Playa d’en Bossa, Ibiza. Right beside its legacy will forever be its founder, Pepe Roselló (pictured, right). A unique individual, a pioneer. A man who personified Ibiza’s dance-music culture from the years 1989–2016.

Originally, the building that Space and Pepe called ‘home’ for almost three decades, was designed as a multi-purpose venue for conferences, meetings and events. This original plan didn’t work out, so in stepped Pepe to seize the opportunity to create something special. “I made the first reformation works to close the compound in, since the building itself was all out in the open,” he says. “The first

thing we did in order to make the terrace area a real part of the establishment was build an enclosure, making the walls with traditional Ibizan stone.” A complete music devotee, Pepe Roselló knew very well the great lengths that Ibiza’s people would go to in order to listen to the music they adored. At the time Space was founded, under Spanish law all establishments on the island had to close for at least two hours a day. With this in mind, Pepe decided to open with two daily sessions, with a two-hour break in between. “This concept just worked,” he says. “The idea of dancing in the daytime took hold and quickly became fashionable, with the most authentic and fun people of Ibiza joining together in this magical place each and every day.” In Space’s early years, its entertainment policy threw up an eclectic mix of shows: Mr. and Mrs Space, Miss Ibiza and Formentera, live bands, flamenco performances and more. In 1991, a young English DJ named ‘Alex P’ had the idea of setting up a roof behind the main bar to play music in a more ‘chilled out’ fashion. Two years later, another British DJ named Brandon Block joined him; together they helped to introduce the famous ‘Space Terrace’ to the world. In the 1990s, with the Ibizan authorities tightening up closing times at night, the opportunity to dance in the daytime became increasingly popular, opening up competition for DJs to play on the now famous ‘Terraza’. Pepe affectionately remembers how Space also introduced the celebration of Ibiza’s seasonal ‘opening’ and ‘closing’ events; “In those years we had the initiative to celebrate the opening and closing of the season in the parking area, which we called The Flight Area,” he says. “This led to the start of the season in Ibiza beginning with our opening, and ending with our closing parties.” A key element within the great success of Space Ibiza was the sheer excellence and continuity of the club’s resident DJs. Versatile artists such as Reche, José de Divina and Tania Vulcano; as good as the most recent incorporations like Jon Ulysses and Steve Lawler. These are the DJs who really understoood the Space crowd, the only ones who knew exactly what sound to play – and more importantly – when to play it.

Space Ibiza was named the ‘Best Club in the World’ for the first time in the 2001 Dancestar Awards. Around this time however, Ibiza’s authorities decided to make some harsh changes, forcing nightclubs to shut their doors at 6am and not permitting them to re-open until 4.30pm. In addition to this, music outside clubs was prohibited and all outdoor spaces had to be covered.

During the first decade of the 21st century, with a change of laws moving the day programs to evening hours, Space Ibiza consolidated its position as a worldwide reference for dance music culture, offering a varied schedule that excelled in its showcase of all sides of the electronic music genre. The club brought together five unique rooms, each housing impeccable production. The world soon began to recognise Space as a ‘Mecca’ of dance music.

The year 2005 produced the biggest changes at the club. The outside terrace was sacrificed and covered and the whole club underwent a huge reform, including the installation of the most modern equipment in the world. At this time, Pepe was playing for high-stakes and his close friend and DJ, Carl Cox (pictured), was the ace up his sleeve. With new restructuring and programming, they entered the night-time competition against all of the other major Ibiza club nights. “These were the most critical times for Space,” recalls Pepe. “A lot of changes were forced upon us.”

The constant dedication and improvements throughout its 27-year lifespan leaves Space Ibiza today as the single most celebrated nightclub in the world. Its recognition is testament to the work and excitement that the project instilled from its very beginning, and too the love given by an unconditional audience year after year. “This was the 27th year and it marks the end of an era of our club, Space,” Pepe quoted in the final showcase. “A unique and incredible story, 2016 marks the end of our amazing adventure together and none of us will ever forget it.”

Space continued to innovate though, leading the way for a further 12 years as Carl Cox’s own event, ‘Music is Revolution’, began its own legacy at the club. The closing party and end of this residency in September 2016 – Space’s final summer – was in itself the end of an era; an event that was almost as sought after as the final Space Closing party in October of the same year.

Space Ibiza’s history is today one of great nostalgia. A leader in the landscape of global electronic music, it will forever be remembered as the greatest nightclub in the world, the undisputed centre of reference for an international industry. The future? Who knows? But the memories will live forever; the essence of its history forever embedded within those thick, traditional-Ibizan stone walls.

Amnesia Generations of unforgettable memories, a unique sound and a magical energy.

‘The Workshop of Forgetfulness’

T

he building where Amnesia Ibiza stands today dates back to the end of the 18th century. Five generations of the Planells family have previously lived within its thick, whitewashed walls. In March 1970, this family decided to move from the countryside. Four years later, a young man named Antonio Escohotado arrived in Ibiza and rented their home to create the island’s first ‘discotheque’.

Antonio thought long and hard about a name for his new venture. After all, with no other place of its kind to reference, ideas were few and far between. A place where lovers of music could go to forget their problems; to indulge in a world far separated from the ordinary routines of everyday life. Originally the name he chose was, ‘The Workshop of Forgetfulness’, a seemingly perfect title that captured the very essence of this innovative and revolutionary place. The very next day, the Greek word ‘Amnesia’ naturally took its place.

The birth of Amnesia Ibiza was that of one of Ibiza’s first nightclubs, and with it came the magic of roofless, open-air parties. Multicultural crowds danced in harmony to a Balearic soundtrack provided by the legendary DJ Alfredo Fiorito. The most important changes within the electronic music movement at this time came at the beginning of the 1990’s, when the Berlin wall came down and house music went international.

In 1999, UNESCO claimed Ibiza a ‘World Heritage’ destination and the island’s population reached 100,000 inhabitants. The fame of Amnesia grew and grew. Today, everyone has heard the names of DJs Sven Väth, Richie Hawtin, Marco Carola and Carl Cox. Others like Paul Van Dyk, Tiësto, Paul Oakenfold and Armin Van Buuren too. Hip-hop superstars including Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent have been regulars of Amnesia over the years, gracing the club with their own style, be it on the ‘Terrace’ or in the the ‘Main Room’. The list of rich and famous celebrities that have graced Amnesia with their presence is also endless: Naomi Campbell, Puff Daddy, Dolce & Gabbana, Bono, Boy George, Elle McPherson, George Michael, Valentino Rossi, Calvin Klein, Paris Hilton and many more. Amnesia is the only music venue in the world that can house such a range of talents and genres and continuously excel in all. Time flies, new generations come and go, the face of Ibiza changes.Yet still, Amnesia always remains at the top. An Ibiza institution that has become synonymous with sleepless summer nights on the White Island; inviting clubbers of all kinds to experience its soul and history - the character of an unfolding legacy that shows no sign of ever coming to an end.

For over 20 years, Cocoon has flown the flag across the world for independent, ambitious electronic music and the artists that create and perform it. With events and projects that now span the globe, alongside a host of record labels and releases; Cocoon always has a fresh portfolio of emerging artists to introduce and develop.

L

ike many good stories, there is a love affair that lies in the middle of all this and it began some 30 years ago, when DJ Sven Väth (pictured, above) reached Spain. His next stop was decided by the toss of a coin and it came down to Ibiza, where the love blossomed to a soundtrack provided by DJs Alfredo and Pippi. The year 1999 was the return of ‘The Väth’. Things were looking good on the island albeit in a rather stagnated way. Was it possible that some of the excitement and colour that Ibiza was so famous for had become diluted?

And so, Cocoon Ibiza was born, and what an adventure. An evolving jigsaw of light, sound and communal fun that has never lost sight of what the White Island represents, embracing its essence further with its showcase of fearless, spectacular parties, season after season. Wild Life, Freakshow, Disco Invaders, Party Animals, Heroes: Themes that let the imagination run riot and occupy the senses along with the music. Memories made and treasured. The Cocoon opening party for many is when the Ibiza season starts. The grand closing is ‘Ciao Ciaos’. And well, as for the after-hour parties, let’s use the word ‘Legendary’.

Sven took perhaps his biggest of many career risks by presenting the idea of creating something new to super-club Amnesia, who decided they too would take a jump into the unknown. Sven and Amnesia owner Martin shook hands on a brand new partnership, which at that very moment changed the musical landscape of Ibiza forever. Techno would arrive on the island for the first time. Everyone said it was destined to fail. How wrong they were.

The Cocoon crowd are at the heart of everything. Generated over all of these years, they are an integral part of the very special relationship that the brand has with the island of Ibiza. Sven Väth and Ricardo Villalobos are two of the most amazing artists to ever stand behind the decks, and they will never stop fighting for the musical soul of their fans. Cocoon is still one step ahead of the game after two decades in Ibiza. A true Ibiza love affair.

With Atmosphere, Attitude & Authenticity,

Ibiza Rocks the White Island.

A

ndy McKay and Dawn Hindle; husband and wife, and founders of Ibiza Rocks, simply itemise the totemic cornerstones of this entire concept. An idea that changed the narrative of summer holidaying and partying forever: Fourteen annual weeks of concerts from June until September, the creation of the Ibiza Rocks Hotel, the revival of the legendary boutique hotel; Pike’s… The list goes on.

“Our story began with a passion, a belief, and a drive,” says Andy. He’s a Brit who’s lived in Ibiza for over 20 years, which has resulted in a deep, two-decade experience of island-life and culture. “Back in around 2004 we were seeing a real social shift in Ibiza, especially in youth culture,” he says. “Dance music, at the time, felt old. There was a disconnection and we’d been promoting that scene for so long.” Andy’s first call to a booking agent was met with laughter. “Rock bands playing in Ibiza? Never gonna work, mate.”

With dogged determination and enthusiasm, Andy and Dawn pressed on. “We were intent on doing a night for dance kids who wanted to rock, and rock kids who wanted to dance,” Andy remembers. In early summer 2005, the Ibiza Rocks team had a secret ‘dry run’, initiating a friendship that still persists to this day. Pete Doherty agreed to his post-Libertines band, Babyshambles, playing a pre-launch show. In 2008, the team acquired a permanent venue: The Ibiza Rocks Hotel. Its central courtyard, flanked by a swimming pool and surrounded by the high walls of the bedroom blocks, gave bands an idyllic setting to begin bringing Andy and Dawn’s idea to fruition. By careful curation of its musical acts, its iconic merchandise and its ‘triple-A’ values; Ibiza Rocks quickly became an internationally recognised lifestyle brand. Audiences loved it so much they did buy the T-shirt, and the rest. Its plectrum logo is now a familiar sight across the UK and the Mediterranean.

The Resurrection of Pike’s Step to the table a quirky, old-school hotel, tucked into the hills overlooking San Antonio: Pike’s. This iconic hotel had hosted Freddie Mercury’s famous 40th birthday party and was the location for Wham!’s famous ‘Club Tropicana’ video. In 2011, Ibiza Rocks began an empathetic takeover of the entire venue. “Pike’s still had its authenticity but it had lost its attitude,” recalls Dawn. “It has a classic timelessness to it - so much so that you don’t know what era you’re in. In design terms, you see the new breed of hotel/club brands that are now established in Ibiza and it becomes about globalisation. What we do has lots of originality and personality,” she says. Fans of Ibiza Rocks have come to expect exciting and innovative projects. And of course, they stick to the company’s founding spirit and defining ethos. “The more you fabricate other parts of the island,” says Andy, “the more you go Miami/Vegas and the bigger that gets. This is how other things like Pike’s rise up. We are the counterbalance, the realness. We have character, community and soul. We can’t play the mega-bucks Las Vegas ‘game’, nor would we want to. But we can be the small thing that has a disproportionate amount of influence and that is the magic of it.” “We believe in disruption, we believe in youth, and we believe in creating energy,” he finishes. “There’s a belief structure and it’s about more than money. People recognise that all of Ibiza Rocks’ decisions are born out of a passion, and this is what sets us aside from the rest.”

Café Mambo Home of the ‘Ibiza Sunset’

F

or over two decades, Café Mambo has delivered the very best from the dance-music world to an incredible backdrop of the most spectacular sunsets on the planet. Created in 1994 by husband and wife team Javier and Caroline Anadon, and located on San Antonio’s famous ‘Sunset Strip’; here is a venue that is brimming with character and steeped in Ibiza history.

The once small traditional house where Café Mambo sits today is as much Scottish as it is Spanish. Its story began when Javier and Caroline first met whilst on holiday in Benidorm as teenagers. Caroline returned home to Scotland after the holiday, quit her job and moved to Benidorm with Javier. After a couple of years, they both moved to Ibiza. The rest is modern-day history. A true family creation, ‘Mambo’ blossomed out of a special era on the island in the early 1990’s, a period of shift in dance-music culture that shaped the image of Ibiza as its known today. Caroline and Javier mixed their down-to-earth charm with an ambience that could not be matched elsewhere. Sound and beauty joined hands as the bar revolutionised its approach and began to form a growing reputation.

“Café Mambo is a place of pilgrimage for its fans and one of true merit for those behind its decks.”

Their sons Christian and Alan Anadon (pictured, left), now represent the next generation of the ‘Mambo family’. Together they have grown with the bar, representing the on-going legacy of an island institution. “The Scottish soul makes Café Mambo so unique,” says Alan. “When our parents started Mambo, we never expected to reach the level we have over the years. I remember them panicking when opening the bar. Their life savings went into getting things off the ground.” Back in 1994, the dance-music world was far different than today. With no Internet, Café Mambo’s family atmosphere rang true and the bar became popular on the island for nightclub’s pre-parties. The idea behind this concept came from a need to prove that DJs on the island were going to show up for their shows later that evening. “This pre-party concept didn’t exist before Mambo’s. It is now everywhere,” says Christian. A lot of false advertising from promoters meant that some nightclubs would claim that a DJ was playing later that night, only for them to never show up. “Part of the reason for the pre-parties was to show that the DJs were actually on the island and would be playing at the clubs that night,” says Alan. “Mambo was the only place to get the club tickets back then, too. Our legacy stems from this.” Aided by those sunsets that attract millions from across the world each year, from humble beginnings the Café Mambo journey has transcended into the name becoming a recognised brand at the forefront of the electronic music industry, that hosts the most star-studded DJs in the world. With a restaurant that serves food both day and night, as the sun touches down on the White Island every evening throughout the summer, there is simply no other place that compares. A must-do for all, ‘bucket-list’ status for many: Housed against the white décor of mosaics and marble in a location that is without doubt one of the most iconic on the planet, Café Mambo is a place of pilgrimage for its fans and one of true merit for those behind its decks. +34 971 34 66 38 info@cafemamboibiza.com www.cafemamboibiza.com

onstructed in 1898, the Teatro Pereyra was the first theatre in Ibiza and was declared a venue of cultural interest in 2001. In 1987, after falling in love with the building, Dutch musician and composer Eric-Jan Harmsen and his wife Kees, remodelled the theatre into a jazz-style concert hall.

Since then, Teatro Pereyra has become a meeting point in the centre of Ibiza. Only metres from the ancient walls of Dalt Vila, it is a place where island residents, the rich and glamorous, and just about anybody can join together in harmony to sample the finest live music the island has to offer.

A distinctive, personal touch now keeps Teatro Pereyra’s atmosphere thriving; a special kind of buzz that was instilled by its founders and is now continued by their eldest son, Juangui, who runs the venue.

Manu Gonzalez Born in Ibiza in 1990, Manu Gonzalez is one of a rare breed of native ‘Ibicencan’ DJs who are proudly representing the island in the electronic music industry today.

How was it growing up on the island?

Being a native Ibizan DJ must be quite special for you?

“It means everything - I always wanted to work in music, it is my passion and I’m lucky to be born on this incredible island. For me, it has been a strong point in my career – to be ‘Ibicenco’. Not many artists are from Ibiza, the dance music capital of the world. It is a magical and incomparable place.”

“Yes, I always receive a lot of love for bringing my music from Ibiza to the world. Many people tell me that they never knew an original artist born in Ibiza. This makes me very happy. My mangers Danny Whittle & Mark Netto have shaped my music and career. We form a great team, one that makes Ibiza proud I am sure.”

When were you first introduced to electronic music?

What are your greatest career achievements so far?

“My first contact with music on the island was through hip-hop and funk. From a very young age I was interested in music. I decided to stop studying to work in one of the most important stores of electronic music on the island, Discos Delta Ibiza, ordering vinyl’s and selling CD’s. Some of the biggest DJs passed through. I was just 16 years old and it was a dream to work in this store. I learned a lot about the different genres of music and thank the Delta family for everything.”

“Without a doubt, the greatest achievements in my career so far (in Ibiza) are performing at the International Music Summit on Dalt Vila, Ants at Ushuaia, and to collect an international award at just 24 years of age as ‘Best Ibiza DJ’. Outside of Ibiza, my debut at the legendary Kristal Glam in Bucharest, Romania, and my residency at Egg London have established a strong image internationally for me. These are huge achievements.”

What was your main inspiration growing up in Ibiza?

What is the most inspiring thing about Ibiza?

“I was always inspired by hip-hop and funk and I adapt this to electronic sounds within ‘old-school’ house. My inspiration was always Ibiza, the island that allowed me to grow; she gives me the energy for this. Some of the DJs that inspired – and many who I know today – are Sven Väth, Marco Carola, Loco Dice, Kenny Dope, Loui Vega and Pete Tong. I am lucky to have the right people in my life that make all of this so wonderful. This is true happiness, sharing the energy of the island with the people around you.”

“Ibiza is magic for everything. I like to walk around the island and discover new places or play tennis and sports with friends. Ibiza is a wonderful place to enjoy nature; the beaches, the sea. Walking in the mountains gives a sense of freedom and inspires me when it comes to working on the creation of new sounds. Ibiza, its people, and above all its energy are the most special things that this island brings together.”

How has your own journey progressed in terms of tastes and influences? “Ibiza and its culture is changing and will always change, for good. The island is growing in a positive way and this is what we need. I am happy to express my sound with the rest of the world. Nothing makes me happier than sharing in this way.”

We wanted to create a platform where we could discuss issues in our industry and we wanted to do it in Ibiza, as we felt the island wasn’t getting the recognition it deserved for its contribution to electronic music. That first year was like a giant school trip. There were about 100 people and everyone watched the panels together, ate lunch together and then went out to parties together at night. Since then, dance music’s been to heights it’s never reached before and IMS has been there to document every step. From the huge Vegas residencies, to the festival boom in America and all across Europe; an awful lot has happened in the 10 years since IMS began. But now, we’re coming out of the other side of that boom and there’s a whole new set of challenges for us to tackle. That’s why something like IMS is so vital. It’s a chance for the leaders and artists in our business to come together and brainstorm how we move forward. When I started out, I was constantly told that dance music was a flash in the pan, but look how much ground we’ve covered since then. And that’s not by accident. It’s by coming together and joining forces, and IMS is a fantastic opportunity for us to do just that. Pete Tong IMS Co-Founder www.internationalmusicsummit.com

Ibiza House Orchestra The story behind Ibiza’s stunning live music phenomena

I

biza is the electronic music capital of the world, a haven of magic that has championed creativity for centuries. In the modern era, a soundtrack of classic anthems has given a voice to the island’s essence; artist’s creations that are now famous for bringing joy to people across the world for more than 30 years.

What if you could take the unique history of Ibiza’s music culture and fuse it with an amazing live, powerful showcase? Step forward the Ibiza House Orchestra. A collection of Ibiza’s most talented musicians – all island-residents – this 14-piece band presents a timeless rendition of the greatest classic-house and dance anthems that have emerged throughout the history of electronic music.

The band is the brainchild of drummer and musical director, Mike Wake. A musician living in Ibiza since 2013, Mike spent some time immersing himself in

island-life and music, meeting many talented musicians along the way. Surprised at a shortage of bands that were creating something ‘house music’ related, he soon had the idea of putting a band together that would focus on performing these type of tracks live. In the summer of 2015, Mike met Backroom Productions owners Jamie and Jo Young. They hit it off immediately. Over time, Mike knew that they would form the perfect partnership and together bring his idea to life. A mind-blowing performance by Pete Tong at the Royal Albert Hall in London with the Heritage Orchestra took his idea to a whole new level. Soon after, a meeting was set with Jamie and Jo and the idea of creating an Ibiza band that performed house classics was put forward. The band’s name would come naturally. With Backroom’s years of production skills meeting Mike’s passion and enthusiasm, the idea for the biggest live band ever in Ibiza had moved a step forward. Now came Mike’s job of hand-picking the island’s finest musicians, along with the world’s greatest house tracks. “We wanted to create a set that we knew would take crowds on an epic, emotional journey through the happiest of memories,” he says. “Our intention is to unify people with that feeling that house music gives us all, to come together as one and celebrate life and love through the beauty of music.” In the summer of 2016, after an intense period of initial rehearsals, the Ibiza House Orchestra found themselves on the famous Space Terrace, performing live at the IMS ‘Legends Dinner’ in honour of Space owner Pepe Roselló, for his life-time achievement award. Amongst a crowd of dance-music A-Listers were DJs, Carl Cox, Erick Morillo and none other than Pete Tong. This was only IHO’s second performance. With several high-profile shows to follow that summer, a feature in Pacha Magazine, and airplay on both Ibiza Sonica and Ibiza Global Radio stations; Ibiza House Orchestra had exploded onto the Ibiza scene in unprecedented fashion.

And now, riding the wave of the overwhelming response that has greeted them since their first year in Ibiza, one can only imagine the success that awaits the band in the future. Delivering fresh, exciting performances that the island has never seen before, the Ibiza House Orchestra’s infectious interpretation of house classics comes straight from Ibiza’s soul, and transmits the joy of its electronic music heritage to the dance-floors of the White Island and beyond.

Funktion-One Loudspeakers

F

unktion-One loudspeakers have been at the heart of Ibiza’s biggest parties for the past 15 years. The company’s ethos fits perfectly with an island that is so obsessed with music. Led by founders Tony Andrews (pictured, right) and John Newsham, Funktion-One constantly develops in order to stay at the forefront of audio technologies, and achieve the finest sound quality imaginable.

For anyone that has ever kicked back on the rooftop of Hotel Es Vivé, partied in Privilege, lost themselves in Space, or attended countless events around the island; they will fully understand the positive impact that Funktion-One’s signature sound has on both atmosphere and audience enjoyment.

The love affair between an English loudspeaker manufacturer and the most hedonistic island in the world began in 2001, only a year after Funktion-One had introduced its first branded speakers to the market. The company may have been young, but those leading its charge began their journeys into sound in the late1960’s. Some would say they are responsible for establishing the professional audio industry. There is little doubt that they have been its leading pioneers throughout the last 50 years. Funktion-One loudspeakers first appeared on the island at Space Ibiza on the famous Space Terrace. Blue Box, a Funktion-One dealer and rental partner, had linked up with Darren Hughes, supplying a system for Homelands Festival in the UK. At around the same time, DJ Carl Cox’s management and promoters, Safehouse, had also fallen for the sound of Funktion-One. During that 2001 summer season, We Love Space on Sundays rented a Funktion-One system for the Terrace and Carl Cox and Friends did the same every Tuesday from then on. Club-goers recognised the difference, quickly falling in love with its immersive and euphoric sound.

As Space grew, so did the role played by the loudspeaker manufacturer. Eventually, every room in the venue was home to a Funktion-One sound system. For founder Tony Andrews, the iconic nightclub was the place where he could push the creative boundaries and take things to the next level with his latest inventions. His friendship with Pepe Roselló and the Space team made for a trusting and mutually-beneficial, working relationship. This was always particularly evident at the unforgettable Space Opening and Closing Fiestas. Space Ibiza is no more, yet it will live long in history as the greatest nightclub on the planet – just ask DJ Mag. Space polled as the number one nightclub in the world for six out of the last seven years, and Funktion-One sound played a key role in that success. Space was all about the music after all. The demand for Funktion-One sound at one-off events like villa parties, opening and closing events, and other special occasions, has been answered by a strong rental operation on the island. Beach clubs like Nassau and Tanit have FunktionOne sound systems, as do iconic venues such as Hotel Es Vivé and Privilege, to name but a few. When it comes to a favourite Ibiza memory, Tony Andrews recalls the 25th Anniversary of Space in 2015; “There was a fusion of the traditional Spanish Flamenco dancers with the Balearic beats specific to the island,” he says. “The stage was ‘mic’d’ for the dancers’ steps which became the percussion on the DJs Balearic tunes. Later in the night, three tracks chosen by Pepe were played. The final song was Imagine by John Lennon and everybody was transfixed. Nobody wanted to leave - It was a truly special moment. Of course, the final Space Closing in 2016 was a very emotional occasion for so many people. The end of an era, but our special kinship with Ibiza will go on for many years to come,” he says.

Restaurante Sa Caleta +34 971 18 70 95 www.restaurantesacaleta.com

S

a Caleta Restaurant first opened its doors to the world in May 1988. Founded by Pepín Pujolet and Viki Baos, parents of the current owner Jordi Cardona, it is housed in an area that has always been rich in tradition, culture and heritage. “The idea of opening a beach ‘chiringuito’ here was only a temporary business idea, but quickly things grew,” Jordi says. “Ever since the beginning, we have served the most traditional dishes created by my grandmother and her close friend ‘Na Catalina’, who was the original cook.”

This restaurant, much like its surrounding area, has changed very little over the years, staying true to its local roots. Situated within a popular sailing corner and flanked by deep-red cliffs that protect it from almost every wind, this is one of the most picturesque places on the island. Sa Caleta is also a place of great cultural significance, for close by are the ancient ruins where the Phoenician people, the first to settle on Ibiza in around 645BC, decided to build their first settlement.

“At the beginning of the 1990’s, the Phoenician ruins were discovered close by,” Jordi says. “From then, visits here have been continuous and this is something that gives us great energy.” With almost three decades of service to Ibiza, Sa Caleta Restaurant has evolved over the years; inviting everyone from locals with close ties to the family, to tourists seeking to sample the essence of a traditional gem that has been open almost every day for nearly 30 years. “Since the very first day we opened, our specialty has been seafood,” Jordi says. “My family have always spent their lives by the sea. We are supplied by local fisherman who practice sustainable fishing. All produce comes from my sister in our family garden. We offer a great choice of wine in the cellar too, where the finest wines of the island are presented,” he says. Jordi’s grandfather Pep Pujolet, is well-known for creating ‘Café Caleta’ – a hot drink based on brandy, sugar, cinnamon and a coffee substitute known as ‘café d’ordi’. Once turned, the brandy is mixed with coffee and becomes a soft, aroma-filled drink that is best accompanied by dessert. “Café Caleta is prepared in the ‘Caseta de Sa Caleta’, where we keep the fishing boat,” Jordi says. “After you have eaten a good ‘bullit de peix’ - or fish paella - it is the perfect ending. It is also something of a specialty that has extended to many locals on the island. I am proud to say that it originates from my family.”

Es Torrent

Ibiza’s most treasured fish restaurant

I

n the early 1980’s, a rocky, lonely cove on the coast of Es Cubells in the southwest of the island, lay deserted for most of the year. The only trace of human presence was a fisherman’s hut and a ramshackle road riddled with potholes, that winded down towards the beach.

The spirit housed within this cove is indeed unique. And it is here, overlooking the crystalline waters of the Mediterranean Sea, that Es Torrent beach restaurant first opened its doors in the summer of 1986. Far ahead of its time, with exceptional views over the islet-studded bay of Porroig, here is a place where every year over 25,000 customers sample the fresh delights of the real Ibiza; pure and authentic. To owner Xico Sala, it seems like only yesterday that this rustic, wooden shack began its blossoming journey from a laid-back bar into the timeless, trendy beach club that exists today. His staff, in the beginning, consisted of just three people: a cook, a bar tender and Xico himself. With the exception of a handful of friends and acquaintances, nobody had ever heard of Es Torrent back when things started out. Luckily those who did discover it, transmitted its secret to others. After a few seasons, word of mouth wove its

web and the restaurant became increasingly popular with the locals. By its eighth season, Xico was able to place Es Torrent directly next to the beach. Success notwithstanding, he didn’t want to stray too far from the charm of his early days, and with this in mind he incorporated the old wooden kiosk into the dining room. Today it forms the bar area. Over time, the restaurant began to specialise exclusively in sea-based dishes, of which it is today famous for. The first years were tough. To get the best fish, Xico had to arrive at the market by six o’clock in the morning. Being the first in line was the only way to ensure top quality and maximum freshness. Es Torrent’s original three-person team has expanded to over 25 now, seven of whom work in the kitchen under the leadership of Pepe Tur, the fifth chef to command the restaurant’s fires. The rest navigate the dining room, lead by head waiter Vicent Tur - Es Torrent’s longest-standing employee whose seniority now grazes 20 years. Xico still continues to search out the best fish in Ibiza, although he no longer has to rise at the crack of dawn to do so. He has paid his dues and earned the respect of the fishmongers, who now set aside the very best quality produce especially for Es Torrent. With an innovative food menu that continues to evolve, alongside an oven-baked fish menu that is favoured by locals and visitors alike, Es Torrent has grown into a legendary island institution; forever able to retain those distinct, traditional values at its core.

Sublimotion

Gastronomic Experience

Launched in 2014 by Spanish Chef Paco Roncero, Sublimotion is a journey into and beyond the five senses. It is the work of a magnificent team of professionals and artists; all leaders in gastronomy, music, art, design, magic, illustration, neuroscience and more.

A

total immersion into the creative process of the head chef and his team; alongside friends and co-chefs Dani Garcia, Diego Guerrero, Toño Perez and pastry chef Paco Torreblanca; Sublimotion creator Paco Roncero transports his guests into an entirely new and surprising scene.

Based at the Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza in Playa d’en Bossa, the Sublimotion kitchen team boasts eight Michelin stars after continuous innovation and development. Each show is unique: 12 diners, one tasting menu, and a team of 25 professionals working in complete synchronisation. Sponsored by both Land Rover Spain and Perrier Jouet, Sublimotion’s fame reaches all corners of the world, attained through its exciting blend of Augmented and Virtual Reality, delivered beside gastronomy in ways never seen before.

The Sublimotion stage is a 350 m2 room, a unique space that is designed specifically to showcase the greatest gastronomic show on the planet. In a world designed to intensify the pleasures, here diners are transported into an unknown dimension, where avant-garde cuisine merges with the most radical scene-changes imaginable. Leaping towards the future or whisking diners back to an early 20th century cabaret, guests may step aboard the Sublimotion Airliner and land in the heart of South-East Asia; or perhaps find themselves dancing in hell, surrounded by raging fire and the wildest of culinary sins. The soundtrack to Sublimotion is created by Alfonso G. Aguilar, a composer with a prestigious career in Los Angeles, whose musical strategy heightens the sensations that this haute-cuisine experience awakens in all.

Equally priceless is the contribution made by Jorge Blass, Spain’s most international and innovative illusionist. Blass brings magic to the Sublimotion spectacle to spellbind and delight the audience who must be ready and willing to allow their senses to be captivated. When it comes to the arts, Madrid-born illustrator, Juan Carlos Paz (aka ‘BAKEA’), has a sweet tale to tell through one of his tasty characters. A passionate, innovative gastronomic setting brings two great disciples together for the first time with the illustrations of BAKEA and the pastries of Torreblanca. This original combination involves a choreographed service, overhead projection, and bespoke soundtrack. Another involved in the design of the décor and experimental tableware for the season is Alicante artisan José Piñero, who has created a number of exclusive designs in his workshop for the performances. Sublimotion benefits from the invaluable talents of great professionals from the theatre, events and protocol worlds; such as Jose María Silva (Alehop–Circo Price), Queralt Riera (Dramaturga) and Gerardo Correas (International School of Protocol). Fashion designer Roberto Diz is the concept’s clothing designer. For the second consecutive year, DJ and music producer Wally López, adds the flair of Ibiza’s club scene to an unforgettable show that does not forget its island origins. A scene from the island’s night-life, filling the atmosphere with a prism of electronic musical sound; creating the soundtrack to accompany a truly phenomenal experience.

The magical, multi-space concept that has evolved with a lot of island love. 23 years being a part of Ibiza, turning gastronomy into a unique experience.

Km5 Lounge I

t has been 23 years since the typical Ibizan house that sits beside the 5.6 Kilometre point of the San Josep road, first opened its doors. Km5 Lounge today comprises of a restaurant, a bar and a lounge garden. It is one of the most attractive and glamorous locations on the island.

An emblematic space, Km5 pioneered the introduction of the ‘lounge concept’ to Ibiza. Its owners, Josch Genske and Ana Megido, dreamt of a cosmopolitan venue, where people would arrive at eight and stay until late. As a result, the establishment started with just two bars and three waiters. It has since grown into a reference point of Ibiza’s entire essence, open for all, where the nights are always unforgettable Eight years after its inception, the Km5 Restaurant officially opened, turning the delights to the table in the emblem of this traditional house. With fire the main protagonist in the creation of its cuisine, dishes at Km5 are characterised by the selection and cooking of the finest meats from Argentina, Uruguay, New Zealand and Spain. Dishes such as ‘Tiradito Nikkei`, ‘Octopus Salad’ or ‘Golden Dream in parchment’ accompany the luxury menu. Not forgetting vegetarian options, as well as a menu of selected international wines with which to harmonise each bite of food with.

In the last five years, Km5 has emerged into a leading restaurant for lovers of Japanese cuisine. Sushi, the patient and wise preparation of eastern delicacies, can be enjoyed in a space that is specially created for it; the Km5 Sushi Lounge. Music, essential to the experience at Km5, can be enjoyed both in the lounge garden and in the club. Renowned DJs play every night throughout the summer, injecting a rhythm and colour into the range of parties that the venue hosts each season. Art and fashion also have space in this house. Several exhibitions of new and established artists, as well as fashion shows with the creations of some of the most sought after designers on the island, take place at Km5. Its boutique, housing both national and international brands of clothing, jewellery and accessories, is open to guests wanting to keep up with the latest Ibizan fashion trends. The best of this space is, according to its owners, the variety of the people that pass through its doors. More than a restaurant, Km5 is the fullest of experiences, where the world is invited to eat, dance, and more. A place, no doubt, to sample the real spirit of Ibiza.

Bambuddha Ibiza’s ‘MediterrAsian’ Phenomena

B

orn to a Liverpool-Irish mother and a Greek-Cypriot father, Bambuddha founder John Moon’s global travels began when he emigrated to South Africa in 1964. He journeyed through the entire continent, before exploring the charms of India, Japan, Australia and Goa; followed by a US coast-to-coast road trip along ‘Route 66’.

After 20 years on the ‘hippy trail’, John decided to settle in Ibiza with his son, JonJon. To realise their dreams of manifesting an incredible life on the island, John sold all his worldly goods, borrowed capital, and imported a complete ‘Banjak’ (meeting place) from Bali, along with two Balinese workers to assemble the building. 27 species of bamboo were utilised during its construction, while eight phallic-stone totem poles from Flores were also erected to form the entrance. Bambuddha opened its doors to the world in 1999. Since then, it has revelled in the demands and rhythm of a seasonal Ibiza. The lifestyle of its residents, the expectations of an ever-growing number of multinational visitors, each one seeking to experience the phenomena. A trusted blend of order and chaos, tranquillity and excitement; Bambuddha is unique, unlike any other dining experience on the island. Modernised by John Moon, its ancient-dining philosophy is both pioneering and unorthodox. One of the restaurant’s most recent ventures was replacing the formal European way of dining of ‘starters and mains’, with an Asian-style that involves the food arriving as it is cooking. An idea based on sharing, it allows guests to taste a larger variety of Bambuddha’s exquisite, MediterrAsian cuisine; the organic development of which says everything about the innovative nature of this one-ofa-kind establishment. The three ‘Pirate Buddhas’ found inside Bambuddha’s bamboo walls represent ‘tolerance’, ‘freedom’ and ‘respect’. There is a female, a transsexual and a male,

‘Pirate Buddhas’

showing the diversity of human sexuality. They are of different colours, representing the many global spiritual beliefs. Perched at the bar, they subliminally suggest one of life’s many possible journeys in the individual’s struggle towards peace and love. Meditating on the ‘White Light of Consciousness’, they represent the Buddha that each of us may have been when we were born, and could become once again. Since its early years, Bambuddha has matured; blossoming into a healthy, wise and gracious institution, humble at its roots. Today, with an array of awards, a comprehensive international wine list and perhaps the finest cocktails on the island, the restaurant is a joyous environment that is fitting for many occasions, formal or informal. Its Boutique and Tantra Sex Shop feature many stunning luxury fashion items and erotica, designed to excite and satisfy the most discerning of customer desires. As iconic today as the man who inspired its creation, a genuine leader within Ibiza’s gastronomic scene; Bambuddha has grown from a spiritual social centre for friends, into a temple of great food that houses a magical, authentic atmosphere that is admired by many.

T

he fusion between high-quality cuisine and a relaxed, cordial atmosphere; Zaibiza has duly stepped up to the plate in Ibiza’s restaurant world since it opened its doors in early 2016.

Photos: Giorgio Guglielmini

The creation of co-founders Simone Galvani and head-chef Daniele Tumbarello, the restaurant is located inside the quaint, untouched bay of Cap Martinet in Talamanca, close to Ibiza Town. “We were looking for a location where we could stand out on the island,” Simone says; “Somewhere our ideas would make an impact.” Filled with masses of flowers and quirky décor, Zaibiza is one of the most diverse places to dine in Ibiza, both day and night. Working on highly traditional Italian dishes, much of its food is ‘Romana’ influenced, with the essence of Rome felt throughout the menu. Head Chef Daniele has been working in restaurants for over 25 years and grew up in the heart of Rome. His dishes are always cooked fresh and he strives to source local Ibizan produce where possible. Testament to the quality of the Italian-Mediterranean cuisine at Zaibiza is the use of the iconic De Cecco pasta, one of Italy’s finest. The De Cecco family are known to frequent Zaibiza when on the island; with regular short trips from their yacht in the bay to the restaurant during summer.

“When we are all together in the restaurant, you can feel the special energy here. And this is what people want.”

With the world at its feet, Zaibiza is elegant, charming, rustic and unpretentious – a place you never really want to leave. A throwback to simplicity, it effortlessly blends together a traditionally chic atmosphere that always strives to instil topquality values throughout. Its design is colourful and diverse. This artistic element comes from Simone’s love for art. “This is a place where we welcome artists to show off their work,” he says. “We really wanted to create something different with the décor. It is elegant, but the effect of the veranda with the art is very special. It creates an amazing family atmosphere all-year round.” After its first year on the island, Zaibiza rapidly established its name and today attracts as diverse of a clientèle-list as possible. From luxury-hotel owners and DJs, to passers-by and food-lovers from afar, its rise to success lies directly with its team. Manager Sabrina Gouret has been a part of Ibiza’s restaurant scene for over 10 years; her CV includes Clandestino (former owner), Blue Marlin Ibiza and El Chiringuito, as well as Sol House in London. “I have a little girl and we all have children here, it is a really special area where people know they can bring their children and pets,” she says. “Our customers are drawn to our family atmosphere!” “You can see when our staff are off work, they come here to relax and eat,” says Simone, “When we are all together in the restaurant, you can feel the special energy here, and this is what people want.”

Restaurante Es Ventall In the heart of San Antonio, Es Ventall has sat proudly for over three decades. Founded in 1982 by the ‘Boned’ family, it was – until recently – a place of typical local cuisine...

J

osé Miguel Boned, son of Es Ventall’s founders and now head-chef at the restaurant, grew up within the walls of this establishment. Spending much of his time surrounded by the locals, he was keen to learn new techniques and expand on the creative essence instilled within his family. José moved away from Ibiza to Barcelona, where he worked in many high-end restaurants. And in 2005 he returned home, armed with an intense passion for modern cuisine that he now combines quite naturally with the typical dishes of his homeland.

“From a very young age, my memories were formed around the family restaurant, to which I have dedicated a considerable part of my life,” he says. “There was always a task to do, and as the years passed by my responsibilities increased. In the early years, the restaurant was a benchmark for Ibizan gastronomy, a classic within the restaurants of the municipality, offering traditional cuisine made in a kitchen of firewood, which we still maintain today.” José is currently considered one of the most innovative chefs on the island and was selected as one of 10 revolutionary chefs in the Madrid Fusion competition in 2017. His elaborate dishes, served in such traditional surroundings, both surprise and shock as many as they delight.

Es Ventall is the result of constant and tenacious work carried out by an entire family for over 30 years. During this time, it has experienced many changes in style, taste, and in the faces that pass by. Since its beginning, the restaurant focussed on its reference to traditional Ibizan cuisine. With the return of José, its plates have evolved, maintaining its roots whilst creating a desirable essence that cannot simply be created from scratch. As time has passed, the family standard has always remained the same. It is a given that all products are of the highest quality and all produce is grown locally in the family’s garden - in one of the most unspoiled rural areas of Ibiza, Es Broll de Buscastell; a place where fresh groundwater sprouts naturally. “We have evolved towards offering more sophisticated, traditional cuisine,” José says. “From cooking, to the rethinking of recipes; we are always expanding. With new techniques, we are constantly innovating. We are part of a cast of young cooks who, from their kitchens, have reshaped the gastronomy of Ibiza by blending traditional techniques and innovation with known products. Our background and upbringing has been the key to achieving success.” A clear example of the revival of Ibizan cuisine is the publication of the book, ‘La Nueva Cocina de Ibiza’, in which six young cooks from the island combine tradition in a showcase of Ibiza and its modern day food revolution, of which José and Es Ventall are right at the forefront of. Together, they delight in showcasing the true taste of Ibiza to visitors and locals alike.

SAL de IBIZA

F

Truly Cristal de la Vida!

ounded in April 2004 by Daniel C. Witte, SAL de IBIZA produces and markets the highest-quality, gourmet sea salt sourced directly from Ibiza.

All of SAL de IBIZA’s sea salt is harvested in the nature reserve of Parc Natural de ses Salines d’Eivissa, proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. The salt is obtained solely by the natural evaporation of seawater and thus preserves more than 80 vital minerals and trace elements, (such as magnesium, fluoride, selenium and iodine) detectable in seawater, all of which are essential for the human organism. After crystallisation, the salt is simply raked together and placed on the side of the basins to dry off. The resulting dice-sized crystals are then ground, in the case of SAL de IBIZA, inside ancient stone-mills, to the point of desired granulation. This is the way salt has been obtained for several thousand years. After all, the Salinas salt flats of Ibiza are more than 2,700 years old. The symbiosis of traditional craftsmanship, plentiful sun and light winds, creates this wholly natural sea salt. There is nothing added nor taken away, because a pure and healthy sea salt requires only sun, sea, and an ocean breeze – truly Cristal de la Vida!

The company pays great attention to its iconic packaging, designed to emphasise the product line’s exclusiveness and its use of natural packaging materials, such as ceramic, real cork and refined cardboard.

Cafés Ibiza

T

Since 1958 he economic situation of Ibiza in the late 1950’s was one not for the faint-hearted. Like many other entrepreneurial ‘Ibicencos’ of this time, a young Vicente Tur, founder of Cafés Ibiza, decided to emigrate from the island. With little chance of prosperity coming from home, an adventure to Venezuela presented itself.

Whilst there, Vicente learned to love the local delicacy, coffee, and he set out to learn everything that the making of this craft could teach him. Upon returning to Ibiza, he and his partners began producing coffee themselves, acquiring a small ‘tostadero’ (pictured, top right) in the centre of Ibiza. It was the year 1958 and the economic development brought on by the tourist sector’s growth allowed for the possibility of such a small company to flourish, a feat unheard of before.

The coffee was roasted in a cave of the Barrio de la Marina, a neighbourhood close to the port of Ibiza Town. At this time, the government controlled imports of green coffee and Vicente and his team only had access to very small amounts of it, usually unable to meet the demand for their produce. The coffee was also expensive and of poor quality.

To solve the problems of insufficient green coffee, Vicente had to buy bags of contraband coffee on the ‘black market’. A ship carrying his goods would sail at night close to the shores of Ibiza, with drops made at Ses Salines or Es Codolar beaches. Vicente and his partners would approach the merchant ships in the dark of the night on small barges, where purchases were made discreetly. Once the coffee was acquired, they would return back up the coast and hide the bags until the time was right to pick it back up again. Ever since its inception and still to this day, Cafés Ibiza has not stopped working, growing and investing in Ibiza; all the while serving the people of the island, something Rosario Tur, daughter of founder Vicente and a figure in the company today, is entirely proud of: “We feel very much loved by the population of our island,” she says. “Cafés Ibiza is a product that the people of Ibiza invite into their lives everyday. We feel loved and supported outside of Ibiza too, as we continue to spread our name to more and more countries across the world.”

Meke Coffee Roasters Ibiza’s artisan coffee specialists

S

am Tamatoa (pictured, left) is an original Kiwi from New Zealand and a carpenter by trade. After noticing a gap in the Ibiza market for ‘artisan’ coffee, he decided to make a way into the industry in 2012. Today his company, Meke Coffee Roasters, supplies over 50 leading cafés and restaurants across the Balearic Islands.

“I first came to Ibiza when I was 20 to visit my sister here,” Sam says. “I had the best summer of my life. Afterwards, I travelled around the world a few times and sailed the length of the Atlantic before becoming a certified building practitioner and then returning to the island.” Whilst in Ibiza, Sam felt deprived of really great coffee in the mornings and so he, his brother and a few friends decided to come together and invest their life-savings into a coffee roasting machine. Meke would soon follow. As rich and inviting as Ibiza may be, it can be a tough place to start a new business, something Sam attests to entirely. “With such seasonal variation, heat and many ‘pirates’, the island has proven to be a very difficult place to do business, even though Meke has been very well accepted by both locals and ex-pats,” he says. “After years of hard work, we are finally seeing quite an extensive craft movement, turning away from industrialisation and back towards artisan and local products. Although Ibiza is fortunate to have international clientele that demand quality produce, meaning one can pioneer gastronomic products, there are also logistical challenges that come with living on an island.”

From places like Passion Ibiza and Paloma Café, to Project Social; Meke Coffee has its presence throughout Ibiza. Its range of products can be found at the company’s idyllic roastery on the road into the village of San Juan, and at the local San Juan market on Sunday’s throughout the year.

cafes@meke.co www.meke.co

With a passion for fresh coffee, Sam’s focus is to push his company towards providing the finest quality produce in the Balearic Islands. Meke works with farms around the world that focus on sustainability and ethical sourcing, to select fresh and seasonal ‘specialty’ Arabica beans. The beans are roasted in small batches to achieve Meke’s dynamic flavours. Its carefully blended coffee is constantly being developed to include the freshest crops, with single origin coffees selected in the same way; roasted to celebrate their characteristics and flavours. To bring a higher quality and higher value product to the consumer, Meke works with on-island clients to raise the overall standard of the beverages that they serve. The company offers exceptional ‘Barrista’ training on-site or at their roastery, with technical support and on-going maintenance of client’s espresso machines, along with a full range of accessories and equipment. Today, as the benchmark and go-to company for specialty coffee in the Balearic Islands, Meke Coffee continues to grow, with further plans to expand and continue to offer its artisan products to cafés across the whole of Spain in the future.

Ibosim I

Craft Beers

bosim Craft Beers founders Oscar Enguita and Carlos Guerrero (pictured right, wearing white), are two engineers with a shared passion: brewing beer. The story of their company began in 2013 when Oscar had become bored at a lack of quality beer on offer in Ibiza. “Ibosim Craft Beers was created out of a need,” he says. “Together we have unified our passion with this beautiful island as we felt we wanted to contribute more to society with something greater than our former engineering projects.” Carlos and Oscar first met at University in Barcelona, where a craft beer homebrewing hobby gave them the inside knowledge to follow their dreams. After experimenting with hundreds of recipes and immersing themselves in craft beer culture, they decided to change their lifestyles and embark on an entirely new and creative adventure. The choice of name for their company – Ibosim – represents Carlos’ and Oscar’s awareness of Ibiza’s rich culture. “Ibosim is one of the first known names given to the island, coming from the Punic culture,” says Carlos “The name refers to the God, Bes, the god of good humour, diversity and joy – Ibosim is an authentic homage to this,” Oscar adds.

The home of Ibiza’s first brewery

Ibiza’s first every brewery – Ibosim Brewhouse - opened in 2016 close to Port des Torrent beach close to San Antonio; a key concept for the company, to both brew and serve their craft beers in the same place. “We are very proud of being able to say that we created the first brewery on the island, and of course to finally have a beer that is made in Ibiza,” says Carlos. Ibosim Craft Beers houses an all-year round range of six beers. Posidonia Blonde is a light beer with floral and citrus aromas; Isla Blanca Weissbier is a tribute to German wheat beers, smooth and balanced; IBZ Summer Pale Ale is slightly coppery and aromatic, with hints of tropical fruits; Rosemary Rural Ale is a tribute to Ibiza’s countryside, brewed with rosemary and orange peel; Blood Moon IPA is for ‘hop’ lovers, stronger, deep red and aromatic; and finally, Garrova Porter is a dark beer with sweet notes of cocoa and nuts. One way that Carlos and Oscar strive to innovate is by brewing ‘collaborative beers’ with local companies. A ‘Coffee IPA’ saw them partner with local coffee Roasters Meke Coffee, and Las Dalias Hippy Market have their own recipe too. “We like to share our image by having special designs for bars and restaurants on the island and collaborating with local artists,” Carlos says. “We try to get close to our people by participating in local parties, markets and events whenever we can.” One thing is clear, Carlos and Oscar are always looking at ways to improve both the quality and the way they offer Ibosim Craft Beers to the people of Ibiza. “We are completely focussed on the island and our advice is to always drink local,” they say.

Hierbas Ibicencas Familia Mari Mayans

H

ierbas Ibicencas is simply synonymous with the Mari Mayans family. Their history goes back over a century when Juan Mari Mayans spent his time researching the properties of indigenous, aromatic plants for use as home remedies.

In search of greater knowledge of the entire distillation process, Juan Mari’s dedication took him to Barcelona, where he looked for the tools to improve his recipes that would allow him to begin creating his own alcoholic drinks. Thus, in 1880, he founded the first Balearic distillation factory and produced his first liqueur, Frigola. Little by little, the success of Juan Mari’s liqueurs grew, and he ended up moving to Ibiza permanently along with his family. He was a pioneer in methodology. While most still macerated plants in anisette, he had begun distilling liqueur using copper stills. With a keen interest in aromatic and medicinal plants, Juan Mari carefully collected formulae and recipes from past centuries. And it is this that makes Hierbas Ibicencas Familia Mari Mayans products so distinct. Within its very essence is an optimum combination of aromatic plants that have been distilled, drop-bydrop, to create its special flavour and aroma.

info@fmarimayans.com www.hierbasibicencas.es

The production process takes place in its entirety in Ibiza. From gathering the plants that grow naturally on the island such as peppermint, thyme-flowers, wormwood, rosemary, chamomile, oranges and lemons; to all other steps of production including maceration, brewing, boiling and distilling. The Hierbas Ibicencas Mari Mayans distillery is located in Montecristo, close to Ibiza Town. The traditional Hierbas Ibicencas and Frigolas drinks both still follow Juan Mari’s handwritten recipes, as the company continues to use his artisan methods. His techniques are now combined with technological advances, which allows for quality control and compliance with production standards. The brand’s latest creation is a premium Gin that goes by the name of ‘IBZ’, highlighting the family’s visionary outlook as they continue to innovate, whilst being a market leader and one of Ibiza’s most recognisable brands. No doubt the star of the show is Hierbas Ibicencas, the original herb liqueur. Due to the popularity of Ibiza and Formentera as tourist destinations, there is now a demand for the liqueur in many countries across the world, resulting in an increase in exports, especially for consumption related to gastronomy, nightclubs and leisure. The tradition, taste and aroma of Hiberbas Ibicencas Familia Mari Mayans can all be experienced through each shot or glass at restaurants and nightclubs both in Ibiza and around the world. Quite simply it is, Ibiza in a glass.

Bodegas Can Rich Ibiza’s largest organic wine producer

A

tribute to the first men and women who originally ploughed the lands of Ibiza, the wines produced at Bodegas Can Rich pay homage to the Phoenicians who first settled on the island some 2500 years ago. The largest producer of organic wine in Ibiza, the history of this family-run estate goes back two decades.

Founded by Vicente Riera in 1997, 17 hectares of vineyard and two hectares of olive trees were originally planted on the site as the family, recognising the potential for business, decided to start producing their own wine. In 1999, the wine cellar was formed. The first grape harvest was in the year 2000, followed by the first rosé and red wines appearing on the market in 2001. Today Vicente’s son, Juan Riera, is the proud owner of the estate along with his wife, Stella González (both pictured, right). Together, they have guided Can Rich to many international accolades. Their annual production of wine is over 90,000 litres. Situated in the idyllic countryside between the towns of San Antonio and Buscastell, Can Rich is a blend of ecological farming and modern, traditional winery methods; practicing a trade that reflects the special character of Ibiza’s land and climate, throughout all of its products. Its logo is that of a Phoenician ship - the island’s heritage rooted deep within this traditional family enterprise. Can Rich produces Red-grape wine varieties including monastrell (Graciano), tempranillo, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and syrah. White-grape varieties of malvasia and chardonnay are also grown by the family. The company produces two varieties of sparkling wine, as well as the traditional liqueur of Ibiza, Hierbas Ibicencas. Its wines can be found throughout the island’s restaurants and all products are exported around the world to Germany, Austria, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, and even as far as the USA and Japan. In 2007, newly acquired land in the Parque Natural de la Salinas in the south of the island saw an extension of the original rural countryside location added to the business. The result today is the fusion of characteristics from both areas of land, one inland and one by the ocean; creating a versatile and organic wine that is truly authentic to Ibiza’s soil.

The Attraction of LAW The Secret To LAW’s Success: 100% Made In Ibiza

B

orn out of pure love for Ibiza, its lush nature and cosmopolitan atmosphere, a new gin called LAW has begun to conquer the world.

With its roots firmly grounded inside the island’s rich, red soil, the secret of LAW’s London dry recipe is that the majority of its ingredients are of 100% Ibizan origin. Yet, the use of fruity prickly pears is somewhat unique, as is the combination of both the Common and Phoenician Junipers. The latter grows everywhere in the Balearic Islands and is indispensable towards creating a true Ibiza gin. The fresh peel of hand-picked lemons and oranges, in addition to Spanish cucumber and Padrón peppers, add to the exceptional nature of this truly innovative spirit. Not forgetting the salt of course, straight from the famous salt flats of Salinas, ensuring that each bottle contains a pinch of genuine sea breeze. Perfecting the formula and setting up their little distillery, it took some years before the three island residents; founders Luna, Alexander and Wolfgang (LAW), could realise their dream of producing an exquisite Ibiza gin. LAW is hand-crafted in a traditional copper still in so called ‘small batches’ of only a few hundred bottles per distillation. Duly outstanding though, the aroma and quality of LAW has convinced connoisseurs of high-class spirits worldwide to honour the brand with yet 14 awards in a range of international competitions – notably the New York International Spirit Jury, earning the prize ‘Best gin distillery of Spain 2016.’ However, it was another quite different situation that told the three makers of LAW that their mission of creating an authentic island ambassador had been fulfilled. An elderly ‘Ibicencan’ gentleman, smelling the scent of LAW Gin for the very first time one afternoon, whispered, “This reminds me of the campo in spring time.” They smiled, for this being the true measure of a fantastic Ibiza success story.

Tea of Life Kombucha

W

ith a solar-powered production facility and the use of all-organic ingredients, Tea of Life Kombucha creates delicious, pro-biotic drinks for the people of Ibiza and Europe. Created by Californian, Mark Frydrychowski (pictured, above) in 2013, it has since grown into one of the island’s leading health brands.

“This island is a place of contrasts and balance,” says Mark. “Whilst the incredible night-life draws in millions of party people, its natural beauty and feeling of freedom attracts others who seek relief and rest from the outside world. Tea of Life Kombucha offers something for everyone,” he says. “It is a wonderful low-calorie alternative to alcoholic drinks or the perfect cocktail mixer or ‘recovery drink’ after a night out. Its organic acids help the liver cleanse the blood of toxins and pollutants. Its low pH level balances the acid and alkaline levels of the body, too” Aiming to support healthy nutrition and contributing towards creating a more balanced world, island resident Mark began making Kombucha in Los Angeles, California, around 10 years ago. The drink comes in flavours made from all-natural, raw Kombucha. The original ‘yerba mate’ is a fruity hibiscus blend, then there is a zesty-Asian fusion of lemon-grass and turmeric. “When we first offered Kombucha at small markets in Ibiza in 2013, not many people had heard of it,” says Mark. “As more people sampled the brew and learned of its amazing health benefits, we soon realised there was great potential for Kombucha in Ibiza, so we expanded our facility and started using new, eco-friendly technologies to brew larger amounts of premium quality Kombucha.” Grateful to be part of such an amazing community, giving back to the island is a must for Mark and his business values ring true. “One of our goals is to one day sponsor the construction of a new public skate park for the youth of Ibiza, so the next generation will have a creative outlet to help them build lives of health and balance,” he says.

Passion Ibiza

A Lana Love Story...

A

n ‘accidental entrepreneur’, Croatian-born Lana Love, founder of Passion Ibiza, originally moved to London in her teenage years in the search for newer, more open horizons. “I love my country,” she says. “But from a very early age I knew I wanted to leave and live abroad.”

After living in London for 13 years and working for a number of cafés and restaurants, Lana landed a place at the prestigious London Drama School. The problem for her at the time was that she was unable to pay the school fees. Thus, she decided to start a small summer business abroad in the hope that it would make her enough money during the season to fulfil her dream of pursuing a career in acting. In 2002, after a friend suggested that her idea to open up a healthy restaurant in Croatia would work perfectly in Ibiza, she took the plunge. Having never been to Spain before, never mind Ibiza, her journey had begun to take shape, albeit slowly. The first Passion Café opened in Playa d’en Bossa over 15 years ago. Starting a brand new concept in a then fairly undeveloped area of the island took time to be a success. “I hoped opening Passion would bring me closer to my dream of studying acting, but it has actually taken me away from it,” Lana says. “I think the Universe saw bigger use of me bringing pleasure to people in this way, more so than being on the big screen.” Taking inspiration from her customers, fans and the many admirers of the now island-famous Passion brand; through a lot of hard work, dedication and sacrifice, Lana Love and Passion Ibiza blossomed. There are a total of six Passion locations spread across the island today. From Santa Eulalia to San Josep, Lana has almost become her own competition. She even has her own cold pressed juicery, Passion Juicery, continuing to strive, innovate and move with the trends. Passion Pantry, a bio shop, deli, take away and café concept in one, is also testament to this. Lana Love refuses to stand still.

ART & DESIGN

The Kaleidoscopic Art of Ibiza “The cultural identity of Ibiza is like a kaleidoscope that keeps on enriching itself to this day.”

F

rom the beginning of the 20th century up until today, a magnificent constellation of creators have existed in Ibiza. Painters, sculptors and architects; a diverse mixture of ar tists, poets, photographers and filmmakers, too. Although not in the same league as Miami, Paris, London or Amsterdam, the art of Ibiza has become its own brand. A label of wide variety; one of themes and artistic expressions that showcase an undeniable and underlying unity throughout. To decipher the reason why this picturesque Mediterranean Island has drawn such a vast collection of artistic creators to its shores, a return to the 1930’s is inevitable. At this time, the interest in the ‘Isla Blanca’ was primarily driven by the search for an ancient civilisation discovered by ethnologists and anthropologists, who dug deep into the island’s lands. Later in the century, Spanish, German, Dutch and French intellectuals fled from the European post-war greyness and arrived in Ibiza; some recommending a move to others. Many, with their shattered personalities, helped to formulate the sparkling and unique lbizan style that has since become world famous. The 1950’s were the ‘bohemian years’, with a friendly and cosmopolitan atmosphere engulfing the island. At this time, a large colony of German artists gathered around Erwin Broner (who arrived in Ibiza in 1934); and Erwin Bechtol (who had lived on the island since 1950). Around this group of artists, the Ibiza59 Group (Grupo Ibiza59) was created. The group disappeared five years later, as quickly as it had emerged. Artists from France, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Northern Europe, the United States and of course Spain, were seeking authenticity and freedom in their abstract style. Often psychedelic, dream-like themes ran through their creations, enriching the spirit of Ibiza and neighbouring Formentera through beauty, freedom, love and peace. Exhilarating colours that were extraordinary and exciting filled these creations. These artists attempted to answer questions rather than ask them. No-one on the island questioned, “What is art?” - art was simply admired. The vast majority of artists of this period were pupils of renowned art schools, who transformed their academic skills and emotions into positive vibrations. Many of these artists had already experienced success, while others hoped to gain recognition. Islanders applauded each other and euphoria reigned in its most

remote areas. There was no place to sell these artworks, they were exchanged amongst artists or to wealthy tourists stopping by. The works reflected the island’s beautiful scenery with its sunrises, sunsets, hidden coves and beaches. Some art galleries were around at this time. They carried the names of people and collectors such as Schillinger, Corsario, Spence, Van der Voort and Van Praag (The Tanit Gallery). The cosmopolitan dimension of social interaction between these artistic creators caused a blissful utopia to arise, and myths surrounding Ibiza began to emerge. Little by little, Bohemian Ibiza flourished into a culture of creativity, a culture that artists who had previously spent time in Buenos Aires, Vienna and Paris had experienced before. Through the diversity of its achievements, the art of Ibiza has transformed the lives of artists and art amateurs. There are no limits or rules to follow, just an existing underlying freedom of expression and understanding. Due to technological advancements in the last two decades, tradition was transformed, with large advertising billboards appearing on the side of motorways and in front of nightclubs. During the first decade of the 21st century, this commercial art became an industry purely in its own sub-genre. The hundreds of artistic creators from Ibiza are unique in their own right and will never conform with the rigid frameworks of academic classification. Its style and vocabulary is often metaphorical and abundant in signs, beauty and landscape; all that are typical of the island’s environment and essence overall. The art of Ibiza is a celebration of difference. It is this particularity that illustrates and serves to make history present - the years of the civil war in Spain, the 1930’s, the ‘hippie’ 50’s, the bohemian years; and of course the present day.

riginally conceived in 1964 and one of the first museums of its kind to be founded in Spain, Museu d’Art Contemporani d’Eivissa opened its doors in 1969. In 2006, the City Council of Ibiza and the Ministry of Culture, together agreed to finance a project to refurbish and extend it into Ibiza’s ‘Modern Art Museum’.

The opening of MACE was the highlight of a project that has been highly popular with the people of Ibiza. The museum’s collections are on public display alongside more than 1,500 other artworks explaining the history of art from the mid-20th century, right up until today; at least from an international perspective. Indeed, many of these artists having either lived or been based in the Balearic Islands since the 1930’s. At the same time, the museum offers a space for temporary exhibitions within its 2000+ square metre buildings, which includes various open-air terraces. It also incorporates a large learning centre and a space for reading and research. MACE is a commitment to modern, visual arts; activating and bringing value to the streets of Dalt Vila, a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The museum was initially created as a space for the permanent storage of collections created through works that received awards in the successive editions of the ‘Ibiza Biennale’. This, the oldest part of its collection, is mostly international, largely comprising of paintings from the years 1964-1972. In 1970, MACE’s central office was located in the military building (Sala de Armas y Almacenes a Prueba) inside Baluarte de San Juan (St. John’s stronghold), constructed by the engineer Simon Paulet, who dated the plans the year 1727. The Ministry for Defence handed the building over to the City Council of Ibiza for use as a museum, adapting to this whilst respecting the structure. The opening of the museum was the pinnacle of a project designed for the people of the island. MACE aims to foster good relations between art in a friendly, engaging and critical context. Its mission is to facilitate the task of making art more accessible through applied learning, aiming to become a research centre that promotes the analysis and study of modern art from now into the future.

Dafne and Lucas, creators of the Podenco exhibition, breathed life into the ten 1.70 meter high sculptures, that have now become synonymous with art and culture in Ibiza. Using fiberglass, the artists worked with the hands of other creators, Andreu Moreno, Guido Daniele, Danilo Martinis, RHE, Felipao Art, Miguel Ángel García López, Maurizio Boschieri, Aleandro Roncarà, and Eka Acosta, as well as two students of the School d’Arts d’Eivissa. Due to the overwhelming success of these figures and the exhibition overall, P | ART owner Patrizia Longarini revealed that a new range of podencos would be created by other artists, as well as smaller reproductions that can be exhibited in many forms across the world. “This project comes from a simple idea of promoting an iconic symbol of the island,” she says. “These native Podenco’s are transformed into silent ambassadors, creating an exciting energy load with their formation.” “This tradition, so deeply rooted in the figure of the iconic dog, is perfectly integrated into contemporary art; thus creating a bridge between local Ibizan customs so that everyday art can be both touched and experienced.”

cons of Ibiza is an on-going series of over 60 portrait-style paintings, depicting many of Ibiza’s most iconic and recognised faces, created by Bulgarian artist and island-resident ‘Vivo’ Gal Grabby. These psychedelic-style, oil-on-canvas paintings can be seen across the island. Many have made their way overseas and have been exhibited internationally as far as the Parallax Art Fair in London, UK.

“I am always surrounded by many interesting people so I wanted to paint those who have done something good on the island: musicians, politicians, business people, or artists,” says Vivo. “I wanted to paint people who have created something for the well-being of others and given something interesting to Ibiza.” Amongst the icons Vivo has brought to life in this colourful and enriching way, are the founder of Casita Verde, Chris Dews; the director of Digital Grafic, David Moss; the mayor of Santa Eulalia, Vicente Marí; the musician and founder of the San Juan market, Francisco Mula; the owner and creator of Croissant Show, André Quidu; the founder of the Benirràs drumming sessions, Salvatore Murgia, as well as Yaron Marco, one of the original ‘hippy musicians’ of the island and more.

La Galeria Elefante

A

quirky concept store, idyllically located on the edge of the road into the village of Santa Gertrudis, La Galeria Elefante combines a never-say-never attitude with a run-with-the wind, hedonistic style that has enchanted so many for so long; and is a must-see for lovers of all things beautiful when on the island.

Inspired by a love for dying crafts, hand-made goods and items produced by artisans; La Galeria Elefante co-founder Victoria Durrer-Gasse, has created inside this space, an inherent philosophy of keeping disappearing crafts alive, whilst supporting underprivileged and victimised people across the world.

The inspiration behind her store is diverse and almost impossible to pinpoint, however Ibiza’s spectacular beauty is the protagonist as always. Early studies in textiles and print allowed Victoria to develop a childhood passion for hand-crafted woven textiles and embroidery, which led her in the direction of designing clothes and home wares, as well as other artwork. “I have been visiting Ibiza since 1970,” she says. “My parents had a house here and then came to live permanently around 20 years ago.” With extra special attention to all kinds of needlework, along with inspiration from her grandmother; Victoria’s passions flourished into something spectacular. Enriched by the colours of international culture, to step foot inside La Galeria Elefante is the beginning of a quite magical journey...

Sustainability “Worldwide travel continuously nourishes my insatiable interest in all things foreign and different, and so my collection of exquisite treasures from around the globe grows constantly,” Victoria says. “I have travelled extensively alongside my husband whilst he was working with UNICEF and WHO. Once my home was beautifully decorated with some of my favourite pieces, I decided to open a museum-like store and sell them on to appreciative clients, to share our journey with others.” Victoria’s treasures come from afar. From hidden corners of India, to Bhutan, Madagascar, the Congo; and villages in remote areas of South America. Recycled pieces and all-creative talent are the main ingredients at La Galeria Elefante, displayed throughout multiple rooms, cosy corners and alcoves. Every piece in the store is collected with love; each one has its own unique story to tell. La Galeria Elefante works closely with many island residents and always helps to promote local brands where possible. Victoria also works side-by-side with a number of NGO’s from around the world, such as SEWA and KTF in India, as well as a foundation in Nepal. “SEWA is the Self Employed Women ́s Association in Delhi, where many of my designs are lovingly made,” Victoria says. “KTF is the Key To Freedom movement in Calcutta, supporting & giving trafficked girls a better life. They are taught to make hand-block prints and also to tailor. Each girl has her own bank account and is fairly paid. We do an extensive summer clothing collection with both KTF & SEWA, as well as with a foundation in Nepal, supporting a village in the mountains and helping women and children,” she says. “As well as continuously supporting Fair Trade and small family businesses, we also buy wonderful hand-crafted pieces from around the world that helps many disenfranchised people.”

La Maison

de L’Elephant

B

runo Reymond, creator of Ibiza’s luxurious design-concept store, La Maison de L’Elephant, is a leader in interior design. His touch has graced many homes, incorporating elements from around the world in a style that is consistently in tune with the island’s crisp and simplistic essence.

Founder of one of the most successful restaurants in Paris, L’Elephant; Bruno’s journey into the design world began in the French capital through a passion for elephants, of all things. “I love elephants and decided to call my first restaurant in Paris, ‘L’Elephant’. It stuck!” he says. His love affair with Ibiza also began in the world of gastronomy.

“Ibiza went through a phase of needing more restaurants, so I originally opened ‘L’Elephant’ restaurant directly next to the church in San Rafael,” he says. “What was first a hobby became a business when I opened a Moroccan restaurant called ‘El Ayoun’. I had just returned from a trip to Morocco and was so inspired that I decided to design and create a special Moroccan space where people who had never travelled there before could actually feel, smell, and taste its unique flavours.” In 1996, Bruno opened La Maison de L’Elephant lifestyle design store (pictured), on the road from Ibiza Town into San Josep. It has since evolved into one of the

most influential avant-garde design brands in the world. Spread over three floors and covering a space of over 4000 square metres, LMDE is more like a museum than a shop. A reference of all things current in design, here lies an eccentric mix of furniture, art, décor and accessories from across the world; presented alongside signature clothing, music, jewellery, toys, books and more. Bruno has mastered the art of fusing a minimalistic style with Ibiza’s natural beauty, asserting his creative freedom to the very essence of the paradise island on which he lives. “In Ibiza, you can do things you simply cannot do elsewhere,” he says. “I love to keep everything white and simple, yet incorporate the flavours of the island with those from places like Indonesia and afar.” Bruno’s approach to design, beyond simple comforts, represents a constant search for harmony of all forms, and the expression of the balance between originality and functionality. As well as success with La Maison de L’Elephant, Bruno has worked on design projects with the likes of Pike’s Hotel, Ushuaia and Pacha in Ibiza. His talent reaches all corners of the world, as his work with high-end clients as far out as Brazil and the USA testifies.

Adlib The White Island Look

O

ver the last 40 years, Adlib fashion has become an iconic image of Ibiza. In its early days, Adlib took its inspiration from clothing and underwear worn by Ibiza’s country women, who produced their own items for typical, everyday use.

Their clothes were handmade, using natural fabrics that were trimmed with traditional embroidery and lace. The predominant colour was white and the garments were loose-fitting to accommodate the body’s natural movements. The Yugoslav Princess, Smilja Mihailovitch, played an important role as the international ambassador of this new fashion trend. Smilja found within Ibiza’s women the expression of freedom and natural beauty, both carefree and genuine. This voice and recognition inspired local designers, as well as others from across Europe, to begin producing light pieces of clothing in a similar way.

The name Adlib comes from one of the brand’s original creators, José Colomar, who had been Vice-President of the Tourism Development in Ibiza; a department that, along with the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, promoted and reinforced a brand created under the Latin word ‘Ad libitum’ - which translates from Latin as ‘freedom’.

Another influence on Adlib fashion was the hippy movement that flourished in the 1960’s and 70’s, one that is still very much alive today. The hippy style was based on an informal look, embodying comfort, freedom and a love of nature. Women were encouraged to be more aware of their own bodies and to dress with a greater sense of elegance. With flowers in their hair, straw hats, chunky bracelets, necklaces and drop earrings; their look became iconic. Their dresses were adorned with frills, flounces and lace, with flat sandals or rope-wedges the footwear of choice. Adlib fashion has, over time, become a global experience within which Ibizan design and inspiration crosses borders, taking with it the island’s beauty and celebrating its cosmopolitan atmosphere. Leading international designers have turned to Adlib fashion to inspire their own Ibiza-style collections, all predominantly featuring lightweight fabrics and dazzling shades of white. Adlib Fashion Week, now an internationally recognised event, is held every year in Ibiza in May, heralding the upcoming summer filled with fashion and light. The fresh and original touches of Adlib garments are continuously updated each year by designers who thrive on bringing the runway to life. After more than four decades, Adlib’s runway keeps surprising the world each summer. Its combination of a hippy style, attention to the body’s natural shapes, and overall essence have created, through time and dedication, a timeless fashion style with the notion of: ‘Dress how you like; but do it in style.’

Hippy Chick Ibiza Eco-chic conscious fashion

I

t all started with Cecilia, a young Argentinian girl with an intense passion for travel and a love for adventure. Cecilia spent most of the 1990’s traversing this beautiful planet. From the jungles, beaches and deserts of North and Central America, to the far and near East. Yet, she was always drawn back to the shores of Ibiza.

Hippy Chick Ibiza has since become an international fashion label from the famous ‘White Island’, and celebrated its 10 year anniversary in 2015. From its very beginning, the company produced Spring/Summer collections alongside fair-trade factories, who could handle the fine-hand beading, hand embroidery, and elaborate embellishments that make its designs so unique.

During her prolonged visits to Asia, Cecilia came to love the art, colours and fabrics of these mystical lands. It was no surprise that India quickly became her second home. And it was here that she tapped into her creative talents by flowing with the river of life, guided by the wonder and magic of existence. Influenced by those colours, patterns, shapes and styles that she had fallen so deeply in love with, Cecilia began to create dresses and skirts made from the finest natural fabrics that Mother Earth had to offer.

Hippy Chick Ibiza still takes great pride in working with smaller factories, who are better able to follow Cecilia’s creative process with a ‘hands-on’ approach. Digitally printed fabrics and high quality ‘batik’ are produced without polluting the environment. Hippy Chick Ibiza ensures that all of the waste from fabrication are correctly disposed of.

Her early designs were a great success in the boutiques of Ibiza and Formentera. In 2005, Cecilia Saglio Rossini (pictured, left) founded her own clothing line, Hippy Chick Ibiza, honouring the true spirit of ‘Adlib’ fashion; a style that had been developed from traditional attire, combined with fabrics and designs from the hippies that lit up the island during the 1960’s and 70´s.

Hippy Chick Ibiza women are notoriously conscious women who care about the environment, love their bodies, and want to express their individuality by dressing in a elegant, sensual and colourful way. The Hippy Chick style expresses beauty, freedom and femininity, through flowing designs that are made with the finest fabrics, enabling women to connect to their ‘Shakti’ power, and to fully embrace their divine sensuality.

It was back in 1999 that Beatrice and Francisco first began to sell their knitted designs at the Las Dalias hippy market. Today, their main store in the centre of Ibiza is testament to the growth and success of this brand over the past two decades.

Elisa Pomar When tradition becomes fashion

E

nergy, magic and tradition, dressed in modernity and the pure essence of Ibiza: The Pomar family has worked with traditional Ibizan jewellery since 1850. Elisa’s great-grandfather was known on the island back then as ‘The King’s Jeweller’, a nickname that was given to him for providing King Alfonso XIII’s lovers with small gifts.

Elisa Pomar and her brother, David Pomar, are the natural heirs of that family gem. A legacy inspired by Ibizan ‘Emprendadas’, but above all by their father’s creativity. He was a man ahead of his time, who created custom pieces of jewellery for particular individuals, pieces that were never actually sold but given away as gifts.

The Elisa Pomar collections that are available today from the brand’s online store and jewellery shops on the island, are precisely a miscellany of the traditional jewellery of Ibiza and its modernisation with gems. Elisa and David are the natural actualisation of a visionary who taught his daughter to evolve artistically and voice both her native soul and creativity. David is Elisa’s squire, her partner, and the person who better knows the music for the soundtrack of the distinctive Pomar creativity. Elisa studied gemmology and also researched antique-styles of jewellery, that were hidden during the Civil War. Treasures that had been lost in time. Throughout her designs, she reproduces these pieces, mixed with turquoise, emeralds, coral, virgins, Buddhas, pitiusas, deities and crystals; to create necklaces, bracelets, earrings or unique beads that adorn the wearer in a magic and a profound energy. The result is a look that is traditionally Ibizan - As pure as possible.

Each collection created by Elisa Pomar is inspired by a corner of Ibiza, a finite island where creation is somewhat infinite. Turquoise and emerald seas, white sand, rolling green hills, healing clays and caves where virgins and goddesses live together; all this the embodiment of pure nature, carved onto each of the individual sets which the company presents. As a result, each Elisa Pomar piece is a unique jewel. The Ibizan ‘Emprendada’ was the gift that bride’s families delivered as a dowry the day of a wedding. When a couple got married, the groom gave the bride 24 rings, since this was the way to show the suitor’s richness. Today, the ‘Emprendadas’ survive ostentatiously, adorning the dresses that Ibiza’s women wear, whilst dancing the typical folklore dances of Ibiza and Formentera, blending in a less pretentious manner with everyday fashion for women of all ages.

Natasha Collis Fine Jewellery

I

n the quiet village of San Miguel on a narrow, bright street, sits the Ibiza studio and showroom of Natasha Collis Fine Jewellery. Flanked by the beautiful village church and a timeless café, this idyllic store’s beauty is only matched by what’s inside it.

Born in London where she established her business over seven years, Natasha Collis (pictured, left) relocated her life and studio to Ibiza in 2009, a move that had a profound impact on her work. “My designs are subtle yet strong, as with the random beauty found in nature,” she says. “Ibiza’s stunning natural landscapes, earthiness and kaleidoscope of sunlight are a constant source of inspiration. I can’t imagine living or working anywhere else now. Ibiza is home. It is where I can breathe.”

Working with her preferred metal, gold, Natasha’s signature ‘nuggets’ feature throughout her collections and give each piece of exquisite hand crafted jewellery its own individual character. “If you were to look at a naturally formed nugget from the river you would see a close resemblance to my work,” she explains. “Taking the gold back to the irregular forms of nature so that the essence of the metal remains, is the quintessence of the artistic process for me.”

Self Taught Natasha’s ‘nuggets’ are created using a self taught technique, by shaping the gold with fire to create her unique and symbolic style. “The melting of gold is a wonderful process as you shape it with the flame,” she says. “When it’s a raw metal, gold is dark and almost charcoal in appearance. It’s not beautiful yet, then out of the flame appears a transformation and the beginning of the final jewel.”

Natasha combines her ‘nuggets’ with precious and semi-precious stones. She chooses stones based on her creative impetus, seeing inclusions as part of the story, judging the way light enters and how it feels to touch. Each stone has its own identity and character; the combination of stone and metal coming together to create her unique look. And there is no shortage of inspiration. Diamonds, emeralds, opals, rubies and precious gems have all featured in Natasha’s work. Yet, her favoured stone is the sapphire. “The colours are so unusual,” she says. “There is a huge spectrum, so many hues, blues, greens, pinks, the sapphire is so… painterly.” “I can never make two identical designs,” she finishes. “They are collector’s items. You can wear more than one piece of jewellery at a time, adding multiple rings on the same finger, or place a wedding ring in-between two other rings. It’s elegant to wear just one chain or bracelet, but you can wear several at a time, layering them to beautiful effect.”

What the press say “Natasha’s unique collection has received international acclaim and put her amongst the designers who count in the jewellery world today.” Vogue “The designs, like the jeweller herself, exude serenity.” Elle Magazine “The natural contours, precious stones and artistic freedom from conventional tenets light up Natasha’s gold jewellery with rays of Iberian sunshine.” The Jewellery Editor

Smart Charter Ibiza Inside Ibiza’s most exclusive yacht & boat charter company

Y

oung and ambitious, Smart Charter Ibiza is the largest boat-charter company on the island. Beginning life as just a small charter business with a single boat, there are a total of 45 now within the company, a number that is continuously growing.

Co-founded in 2013 by islanders Charlie Veale and Alessandra Grisoni (pictured, left), Smart Charter Ibiza’s growth is simply unparalleled. Both business partners and friends, Charlie and Alessandra’s story of success is one fuelled by the immense energy that they instil throughout their company from the bottom-up.

“We started off small and now we have a huge fleet of different boats,” Charlie says. “Then there is the sales side of the business, where we buy, sell and refit - as well as acting as a broker.” An avid lover of boats from a young age and a former boat-captain himself, Charlie looked for a way to build on his passion and knowledge of the industry in Smart Charter’s early years. “I have always loved boats and after working as a captain, I thought, this is great fun, and began to look at ways I could enable this passion upon it,” he says. “In our second year, we bought another boat and were introduced to an investor who brought with him two more. This meant the financial support that allowed us to expand rapidly over a very short space of time.” Dynamic and full of energy, yet still remaining both fun and professional; Smart Charter Ibiza’s focus on customer experience is what sets it aside from many other charter services in Ibiza. A personalised and stress free experience is propelled by the fact that the company owns all of its boats, giving maximum flexibility, reliability and peace of mind to clients.

Smart Charter Ibiza’s rapid rise to the top is testament to the fact that with quality comes reward. At the heart of this enterprise lies a team of professionals who leave nothing to chance. “The biggest thing by a long way is working with the team,” says Charlie. “We have lots of amazing people with big personalities and everyone contributes with ideas on how to make the company successful. Making sure that everyone knows they are valued is key to getting this kind of input,” he says. A leading lifestyle brand, Smart Charter Ibiza is fuelled by constant innovation, striving to tailor itself to the desires of Ibiza’s ever-expanding network of high-end clientele. Yet, this is a team that’s still very much in touch with the island’s local charm. “We’ve moved from offering boats of around seven metres long to 25 metres and now offer a wide range of boats for all budgets. We try to accommodate everyone,” Alessandra finishes. “We get rentals from local islanders from March and this is a great source of repeat business. It’s always nice to see the familiar faces of Ibiza each year,” she says.

Specialising in the sale of luxurious, high-end properties and with over 40 years experience in Ibiza’s diverse property market between them; GHL Ibiza founders Philip Gould, René Heinz and Roman Lang excel in offering their clients every service possible when it comes to the sale or purchase of a home on the White Island.

C

o-founder René Heinz’s connection with Ibiza goes back some 35 years, when his parents bought an apartment on the island. “After careers in banking, fashion and advertising, I decided to move here myself,” he says. “I met Roman and Philip when we all worked for a German real estate company together in Santa Eulalia. We then decided to start our own company.”

Standing behind their own ethics and virtues, it was decided amongst the three co-founders to put their names directly above the business from the very beginning; the name Gould Heinz & Lang injected a fresh sense of professionalism unseen before in the industry. The collective force behind a brand upon which success is measured by applying the finest attention to detail, it is this precision that has projected the team to the forefront of a challenging market since the creation of GHL Ibiza in 2012.

“We thought it would be smart to personalise our venture like a private office and put our names above the door to create a bespoke brand,” René says. “For us it reflects the personal attention and high quality service that we offer, as we stand behind our names on everything,” adds Roman. Having worked through economic highs and lows, GHL Ibiza has first hand experience of one of the most diverse property markets in the world; Ibiza’s

seasonal variation, along with its enormous appeal, gives the island an entirely different dynamic to other destinations. “I have worked through two boom times and an economic downturn,” says Philip. “Ibiza was never as affected as people said it would be during the tough years of 2008 and 2009. People just rode the storm out surrounded by its beauty.” Roman adds; “The financial crisis in 2008 slowed the market down but didn’t really affect property prices,” he says. “Since then, we have seen a constant boom. The prices are high like never before and the winter season is becoming almost as busy as the summer.” With Ibiza’s popularity higher than ever, demand for property is at an all-time high and inevitably a transition into a more ‘all-year round’ destination is taking place. “A common trend now is that people are buying holiday homes and they then end up living for six months on the island,” says Roman. “Two years later they make it their permanent residency.” “Winter, Autumn and Spring are the best times to be here,” adds Philip. “I urge anyone to visit Ibiza outside of the season as there are less tourists and a much more tolerable climate.” Price hikes and an increase in numbers may initially seem good on paper, for business at least, but René is quick to point out that balance is needed when looking at the future of the island. “What we see at the moment is that Ibiza needs to find a balance between mass tourism and ecology,” he says. “The strong rise in prices makes it problematic for residents to find affordable accommodation, especially in the summer months when a lot of owners try to cash in on illegal summer rentals, totally upsetting the long term rental market. It is very important that we are all aware of the impact that change can have.”

Deliciously Sorted With Serena Cook

“The Ibiza of today is certainly a more ‘polished’ one than before, yet the island’s essence is eternal, forever embedded into its rich and inviting soil. With a tangible ‘bohemia’ that’s still all-pervading, one just has tap into the inside knowledge available and the magic is right there, just waiting to be discovered.” – Serena Cook

I

n early 2002, Serena Cook, founder of Ibiza’s most sought after Concierge and Events company, Deliciously Sorted, closed her organic café business in London and moved to Ibiza, after a close friend suggested that she spend a summer on the White Island.

That friend was Jade Jagger and, fluent in Spanish, Serena was given a job managing three of Jade’s villas. With a ‘foodie’ background, she ensured that spectacular Mediterranean lunches were always prepared for the guests that were staying at the houses.

“My love affair with Ibiza first began around 20 years ago, when I visited for the summer after graduating from University,” Serena says. “Arriving on a Friday night and unable to check into our villa until the Saturday, we camped close to Moon Beach and went for breakfast in San Juan. I was smitten and returned over the next few years for holidays in the magical north of the island.”

“My first summer was spent hosting rock and roll royalty,” she says. “As the point of contact for the three houses, clients would ask me for anything and everything. From my recommendations for restaurants and masseurs, to booking tables at Pacha, chartering boats to Formentera; and even translating to hire companies in case of a mix-up.” Ibiza back then was somewhat of a rough diamond, albeit filled with hidden gems. Serena’s clients needed inside knowledge, hand-holding, and a reassuring voice at the end of the phone. “Es Torrent Restaurant for example, in my view the best traditional sea-food spot on the island, was down a hair-raising dirt track of hair-pin bends and pot holes,” she says. “Today there is a sign, tarmac and even a road barrier, things have changed!” And so it began: Serena, her mobile phone and a fast-growing reputation for fixing things, or ‘sorting’ as it would be. “The name Deliciously Sorted come to be known from my background in food (Delicious) and ‘Sorted’ for obvious reasons,” she says.

+34 971 19 78 67 info@deliciouslysorted.com www.deliciouslysorted.com

The Deliciously Sorted family “Quickly I needed help, and gradually my amazing team began to grow,” Serena recalls. “The company mushroomed more or less one employee every summer and today we are a multi-lingual team of 20. Our company culture is unique in its sense of responsibility to our valued clients, our suppliers and of course each other. We all say we have the best jobs in the world: a high-octane summer life delivering to fascinating Forbes List clients and celebrities, and a winter recuperating and planning the next sensational season.” In 2008, Serena helped to create the Ibiza Preservation Fund, with the aim of preserving Ibiza’s exceptional beauty and natural value, as well as encouraging sustainable initiatives. Today, the IPF is recognised as one of the island’s key environmental bodies and continues to make great progress. Developing into a Concierge, Events and Villa Company, and with a second office in Mallorca, Deliciously Sorted has evolved into a one-stop shop for anything and everything needed for a holiday, a relocation, or the purchase of a home abroad. The company now encompasses all four Balearic islands. Delicouslu Sorted is an invitation to explore Ibiza’s inner essence, created by a woman who’s very name has become synonymous with good times on the island and discovering what truly makes it so unique.

Ibiza Delivers

With co-founder David Max

I

n May 2011, the island’s first online supermarket was launched: Ibiza Delivers. Since then, it has become a widely recognised lifestyle brand across Ibiza, consistently delivering top-quality produce and exceptional customer service to its ever expanding, high-end client list.

The idea of creating an online supermarket in Ibiza arose in 2010, when Ibiza Delivers co-founder David Max, was thinking of an entrepreneurial way to make a life on the island. “My wife Lily and I had been coming to Ibiza with friends for many years,” he says. “We fell in love with the island, the beauty of the place, its energy and blend of interesting people.”

“Having just returned from a friend’s 30th birthday in Ibiza, I stood in a hotel room and set myself the challenge of thinking of a business idea that we could setup in Ibiza,” he says. “Reflecting back on the weekend, what had we missed? We had to go to a supermarket twice in four days to load our car with provisions, and the produce in the supermarket was poor. It was unpleasantly hot and the whole episode took four hours. I thought to myself: There must be a better way of doing this kind of thing here!”

Over the last few years, a huge influx of wealth has seen Ibiza experience significant social and economic changes. Ibiza Delivers’ growth mirrors this new identity and an upsurge in the number of yachts frequenting the island’s waters, gave David and his team ample opportunity to embrace this transition in its entirety. “At the end of our first season, we were asked by a chef to provide for for their super-yacht, which we did very successfully,” he says. “From that moment on we knew there was a gap in the market for a high-end provisioning service.”

“Once again, we had to learn fast,” he recalls. “Anything and everything can be ordered by our clients: Giant African snails, line-caught Mahi Mahi fish from Fiji, an ice-luge. The list really is endless. This diversity has kept us on our toes and the daily pressure to deliver the best produce in such a short time-frame, has tested the team on many occasions. We now have an established business that is recognised as the number one provisioning service on the island.” In 2015, Ibiza Delivers launched their Pop Up Party service, representing the pinnacle in high-end partying in Ibiza. This event brings the best from the electronic music industry together for a unique celebration hosted by the world’s finest Mixologist barmen. An impeccable waitress service is on hand, too. In 2016, the Ibiza Delivers Offshore Service, Ibiza’s first luxury water chauffeur, set the benchmark for traveling around Ibiza and neighbouring Formentera in complete comfort and style. From an online supermarket to a full, high-end provisioning service; Ibiza Delivers has emerged as one of the island’s leading lifestyle brands. Striving to innovate and always pushing boundaries, its success reflects a journey fuelled by ambition. As Ibiza’s glowing energy continues to be magnified across the world, there is no doubt that this bespoke service will be on hand to cater for all.

EXPERIENCE

Cinema Paradiso

Behind the scenes of Ibiza’s spectacular outdoor-cinema experience

S

elf-confessed movie lovers Joachim and Alexandra Rens (pictured, right), dreamed of creating the perfect setup to experience the magic of cinema. Their vision included the starlit sky as an infinite ceiling, a beautiful location and balmy, warm weather. The Mediterranean was calling. The spectacular island of Ibiza, overflowing with gorgeous locations, perfectly fit the brief, and Cinema Paradiso Ibiza was born.

Where did you get the inspiration to start a cinema in Ibiza? Joachim: “We have always been really passionate about film and the journey it takes you on. We wanted to take going to the movies to the next level by surprising people with style, comfort, food and drinks.” Alexandra: “Our inspiration comes from all over the world. We even went to China to design and produce our own beanbags. We ended up in Ibiza as it seemed to be the perfect place to bring our ideas to life. There was no outdoor cinema here at the time and the island is so diverse, with many visitors looking for unique experiences. It was meant to be!”

info@cinemaparadisoibiza.com www.cinemaparadisoibiza.com

Tell us about some iconic locations you’ve set up the cinema. Joachim: “In summer, we show films in the Baulard de Sant Pere, a very cosy corner that is part of the old city walls of Dalt Vila in Ibiza Town. The setting is very charming, with softly lit candles, lanterns and the famous Medieval fortress as a beautiful backdrop.” Alexandra: “We’ve also shown films on the stunning cliff-side beach at Amante Beach Club, in the courtyard of an old Dominican convent, on the pink tennis court at the legendary Pike’s Hotel and free screenings on Talamanca beach, to name a few. Plus, we host intimate outdoor cinema nights at some of the most amazing private villas on the island.” How do Cinema Paradiso’s private-villa screenings work? Alexandra: “It’s like ordering any other service here in Ibiza. People just need to let us know the size of their group and which film they’d like to see. We then bring the complete outdoor cinema experience to their doorstep. The villas here are so well suited for our setup. There is plenty of space for our big screen, beanbags and a popcorn machine for fresh, unlimited popcorn all night as guests enjoy a film in the privacy of their own (holiday) home.” What does the future hold for you? Joachim: “The amount of projects we have lined up this year is very exciting. In the future, we’d love to expand and set up our cinema at different tropical locations during the winter months. We also want to expand our catering offerings as food and drinks really complete the night. However, our focus will always remain on creating the perfect cinema experience.” 169

Walking Ibiza

With Toby Clarke

B

orn in Ibiza to ‘hippy parents’, Toby Clarke (pictured, above), had one of the best childhoods in the world growing up on the island. After moving to the UK at the age of 10, the move away brought the usual ‘treadmill’ of life with it. It was here that he met his now wife, Belinda, and, clear that they both wanted to move abroad, what better place than back home?

Back on the island and discovering more of its beauty than ever, Toby had a ‘crazy idea’ one day in 2010, deciding to walk around the entire coastline of Ibiza with just one Euro to his name. Accompanied only by his dog, Cosmo (pictured, above), he set off on a completely unknown journey and what was to become a life-changing adventure. Unknown at the time, it was also the beginning of his company, Walking Ibiza.

Today, with Walking Ibiza, Toby and his team take guests on walking and kayaking tours island-wide, sharing knowledge of Ibiza’s history & wildlife and venturing off the beaten track to locations that only Toby knows. “Every day the island surprises me with some amazing view or old building. This is the true magic of Ibiza,” he says. Blowing away the stereotypical view that many people have of the island is what Toby loves more than anything. Only minutes after leaving the town’s of Ibiza you can be taken in by stunning, rural countryside. Walking along the coastline and visiting beaches that very few have ever laid eyes upon, snorkelling in the crystal clear sea; or discovering unforgettable places like Atlantis, The Cave Of Light, The Shrine of the Island Goddess: Tanit, The Lost City and The Crystal Coast, to name some. Toby’s walks are full of historical facts.“The islanders became experts in using the sling-shot to protect themselves from the many pirate attacks that came their way,” he says. “Before the sling-shot, they would have thrown rocks at the pirates from the many watchtowers we see dotted around the coast. They discovered that, when they used a piece of leather and string, they could shoot small stones at high speeds with incredible accuracy to help defeat the enemy.” From wine & tapas-tasting walks to walking at sunrise or sunset, and camping under the stars; Walking Ibiza is the chance to immerse into the alternative ‘wild side of Ibiza’. To understand just why so many people have been visiting this magical island for thousands of years.

alking Ibiza founder, Toby Clarke (pictured, right), loves walking! He also loves food and drinks. So what better way to combine the two than a walking food-tour around Ibiza town? Visiting local and unusual food places, taking in the delights of gastronomic culture; tasting and drinking the specialties of both Ibiza and Spain. Ibiza has a fascinating history with food, one that’s been influenced by the many cultures that have settled on the island over thousands of years. Ibiza Food Tours sets out to open up the stories behind many of the shops, restaurants, chefs and cooks, housed within the narrow streets of the famous old town of Dalt Vila in the centre of Ibiza.

For thousands of years, Dalt Vila has been the central hub of business and trade, a meeting point for the whole island. Ibiza Food Tours begin by giving an insight into the different coffee’s that Ibiza produces, including the rich brandy ‘Carajillo’. With morning and evening tours throughout the year, they typically begin around the Ibiza Marina area and make their way up through the charismatic streets of the medieval town.

The traditional dish, Flao (a type of pastry), is sampled at the oldest bakery on the island. The local produce market introduces walkers into the ways that the Ibicencan people shop. Charming stall holders, proud to show off their produce, waiting to welcome all to sample their goods, which include local goats cheese, beer made from carob trees and even Formentera sea-water. Not forgetting the wine, olives, local pastries and ice-cream; and of course the traditional liquors, Hierbas and Frigola, both made from local herbs. Ibiza Food Tours’ guides give detail on the history of Ibiza too, inviting guests to feel immersed in the culture of both the food and the people of the island. A now flourishing food scene is booming in Ibiza like never before. With a choice of restaurants and a range of cuisine that rivals perhaps anywhere else in the world, Ibiza Food Tours aims to connect with the essence of the island through taste, bringing to life the flavours of a bygone era for a gastronomic experience that is truly one-of-a-kind.

THE SHOP IBIZA Ibiza’s one-stop creative events & marketing shop

W

hether it’s a full-blown visual extravaganza or an intimate villa party on the Ibiza agenda, it’s all in a day’s work for The Shop Ibiza. This pioneering agency, a stand-out industry leader, has always pushed boundaries to achieve the unimaginable. This fearlessness has propelled The Shop to the forefront of the Ibiza events industry for 17 years, working with brands to simultaneously engage and entertain in ways they would never have envisaged, while consistently making music a part of their marketing ‘DNA’ along the way. It was a deep connection to dance music that brought The Shop Ibiza founder Simeon Friend to Ibiza. First as a holidaymaker in 1989, blown away by the burgeoning club scene, and again in 2000; when he officially setup shop leaving his former London life as a DJ, music producer and ‘remixer’, to formally relocate to the island. But the catalyst for his journey from clubber to company founder came about in the Alps, where a fortuitous winter saw him connect the music and marketing dots together.

Today, the two are entwined. But in the 90’s, big brands were hardly clamouring to align themselves with dance music, whereas Simeon saw the marketing potential in such a pairing. Whilst on the slopes, he began booking talent and organising events, soon working for a winter sports events company, who’s campaign spearheaded the snowboarding industry. And with this, The Shop Ibiza was born. Devising innovative ways to grab attention soon became the company’s expertise, and The Shop began to deliver creative and alternative events with ingenious marketing ruses: A snowboarding ramp in the centre of London’s Covent Garden, a Swatch Wave Loch tour with Santana and Run DMC, skateboarder Danny Way jumping The Great Wall of China; and the Kahlua Kollective Beats World Tour, which concluded in Ibiza. With minimal infrastructure and suppliers in Ibiza, a professional events scene was largely non-existent around the new millennium, and collaborations between music and corporates was initially exclusive to clubs. Taking the reigns with industry heavyweight brands like Red Bull and T-Mobile, The Shop began providing technical support and promotion from a grass roots level, later hiring out top-quality sound, lighting and video equipment to service professional and private clients at an international standard. Today, the agency operates from the village of San Rafael with a savvy team of nine creatives, technicians and industry specialists on-hand to build individual packages tailored to a client’s specific needs.

From wedding planning to pyrotechnics, Tesla coils and technical hire, The Shop’s team can facilitate a client’s plans no matter how small or largely incomprehensible they may seem at first. Not forgetting the International Music Summit, of which Simeon is a founding partner. The Shop runs the entire production of this threeday conference, including logistics, licensing, sponsorship, ticketing and promotions; culminating with the spectacular ‘IMS Grand Finale Festival’ at the historic Dalt Vila. Whether in a cave, on a remote beach, or within a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the importance of these ground-breaking events for promoting the diversity

of culture in Ibiza cannot be underestimated. As well as contributing to the booming tourist trade, they provide the perfect platform from which to reach the international community. Navigating the local territory and respecting the island has been paramount to the agency’s success. The Shop continues to produce socially responsible events to ensure a positive experience is had by all involved; all while creating enduring memories for both clients and consumers alike.

Campos de Ibiza

An Ibiza-family’s success story

A

story of freedom and love for Ibiza... The fate of the family behind the creation of Campos de Ibiza; the most significant fragrance from an island renowned across the world for its wonderful nature and cosmopolitan atmosphere, began back in World War II, when Germany invaded France.

A young French soldier named Maurice Stora, on his way from France to London to fight alongside his fellow troops, was captured and imprisoned in Spain. Here, he became a close friend of his then translator, Baroness Ilaria of Romania. “If we survive this, I will take you and your family to discover paradise,” the Baroness promised Maurice. True to her word, when the war ended in the 1950’s, she brought the young Frenchman to Ibiza, the start of a friendship that would last a lifetime. From that moment, Maurice fell in love with the island. A virgin paradise, his very definition of freedom; he brought his daughter Camilla to its shores for the first time at the age of two, in turn beginning her own love affair with Ibiza. This resulted in the creation of Campos de Ibiza in the late 1970’s. With it came the creation of a perfume that allowed Camilla to capture the memories of her early childhood summers spent on the island.

Scents created from the essence of the fruits and flowers that blossomed from her own garden became the signature of Campos de Ibiza. The vivid thoughts of delightful countryside; of wonderful dinners under the stars in enchanted gardens; of sunny days surfing the turquoise waters and basking in hedonistic nights. Today, Campos de Ibiza is led by Camilla’s daughter, Aurélie, who has expanded the brand into wider, more international dimensions. Inspired by the aromas that penetrate the senses, depending on the season, there are a total of six Campos de Ibiza fragrances. Two fruity fragrances: Fresh Mandarin and Fig Essence; Three floral fragrances: Rose Water, Jasmine and Almond Blossom; and one woody fragrance for men, Cedar. In response to the success of its perfume collections, Campos de Ibiza has developed an entire universe of alternative products, including cosmetics, soaps, candles and more. The company also provides ‘miniature-luxuries’ for many of Ibiza’s hotel guests throughout the high-end tourist sector. All of Campos de Ibiza’s products are 100% Spanish, with formulas affirmed by years of experience in the field of natural cosmetics. All are tested and entirely free of parabens.

As experts in the production and sale of luxury goods, Campos de Ibiza has launched a vast line to present a gamut of products in elegant, practical and original ways. From corporate gifts at company events and fairs, to incentive programs and employee promotions. With a catalogue of over 60 products, the brand showcases the distinctive, Mediterranean character that is famous across the world. Additionally, the company offers unique personalised gift services from an ample selection of possibilities and prices in exclusive and elegant packaging. Today, its name is present in many sectors, perfumeries and exclusive concept stores worldwide. Hotels and Spas, events, weddings; and in more recent years the creation of a distinct collection of tunics for both men and women. All of Campos de Ibiza’s products can be found in their main concept store situated in the centre of Ibiza (C/Vicente Cuervo 13-Vara de Rey), or in Marina Botafoch. The team awaits its global clientele each summer, ready to share the passion for their paradise island and with it, its unique essence; the very scent, the air of a quite magical place that is very much ‘home’. Representing the fusion of simplicity and sophistication, Campos de Ibiza is today one of Spain’s best known brands and is present in over 20 countries. Born in a place where luxury meets nature, where both work in harmony; “I love thinking that something born in my garden at home in En Cubells can travel so faraway,” Aurélie says.

Hierbas de Ibiza A delight for the senses

Antonio and Maribel; husband and wife, and parents of the Torres Sagrera siblings

P

produced by the Torres Sagrera family in Sant Llorenç de Balàfia in northern Ibiza, Hierbas de Ibiza is a fresh and elegant fragrance, carefully blended from the natural flora of the island’s idyllic countryside.

The Torres family tradition in perfume making goes back to the year 1965, when jewellers Antonio and Pele Torres, two of the original participants of ‘Adlib’ fashion in Ibiza, created the ‘Torres’ Eau de Toilette and Aftershave products. At this time, Catalan industrial designer André Ricard, designed the fragrance’s packaging, creating an elegant brand that complemented the family’s jewellery making heritage in both style and quality. Three decades later, overwhelmed by the success of such products, the next generation of Torres Sagrera siblings undertook a thorough study of all areas of production in order to perfect and re-interpret this pioneering initiative. The result being the creation of ‘Agua de Colonia Fresca, Hierbas de Ibiza’, as it is known around the world today. In recent times, the company has increased its portfolio, ‘sailing the seven seas’ and following in the footsteps of grandfather, Antonio Torres Molines, an Ibizan sailor, who in his youth, captained the brig ship ‘Matilde’ during various commercial voyages to Havana, New York and other international ports. Today, Hierbas de Ibiza products are a must-have for any true connoisseur. The name itself is established globally as a trendy ambassador from Ibiza, and can be found in niche perfumeries, stylish boutiques and concept stores worldwide. All of this without ever losing losing the family Torres de Can Cascais stamp. The fragrance today builds upon traditional values, to create a unique accord that will be familiar to anyone who has ever walked amongst nature in the rolling hills of Ibiza. The essential oils used in Hierbas de Ibiza’s exclusive fragrance formula are locally distilled by the family to this day. Each family member gives their all; the minimum requirements to carry on a true legacy and prolong a genuinely unique Ibiza success story.

IBIZALOE Aloe Vera: The Millennial Plant

F

ounded in 2014 by Ibizan Cesar Mayol, (pictured, right) at the age of 27, Ibizaloe specialises in the sale of natural cosmetic products that contain 100% organic Aloe Vera grown in Ibiza. “It is tradition that Ibizan families have an Aloe Vera plant at home,” Cesar says. “My mother, my grandmother, and great-grandmother always used Aloe Vera for everything, cuts, pains, stomach problems and much more. This is the reason why we are so accustomed to using the plant on the island.”

After leaving Ibiza to study at University in Madrid, it became clear to Cesar that products stating to include ‘100% Aloe Vera’ were not the same quality as back home. “I began to analyse some well-known Aloe Vera based products and the results were amazing,” he says. “Some did not contain any Aloe Vera, many only contained a very small percentage, and all of them used chemicals and products that are bad for the skin.”

After University in Madrid, Cesar moved to New York City to live and study. “It was in New York where I began the foundations for the Ibizaloe project, and in 2014 I made it a reality when I moved back home to Ibiza,” he says. A realisation that there was a clear gap in the market, combined with a passion to provide a quality product, are what inspired the Ibizaloe journey for Cesar and his family, who of course play a part in the business today. “My family plays a huge part in the company and without them, everything would be different. We want everyone to use Aloe Vera like we have always done in Ibiza. That’s the reason why all of our creams are totally natural and our ingredients are grown from our own organic plantations on the island.” Ibiza’s micro-climate provides the perfect environment to grow the Aloe Vera that is used in all of Ibizaloe’s products. Today, with its own organic plantation located close to the town of San Antonio, and even a museum dedicated to the plant showcasing the history of its ‘magic’, Ibizaloe is pushing the boundaries of its business approach and stocks its cosmetic products across the island; as well as exporting internationally to the likes of Italy, Holland and Germany. “I am from Ibiza and always wanted to make something happen here,” Cesar finishes. “Aloe Vera is a plant that has always been around us. They even said that Christopher Columbus never journeyed without it. Our aim now is to produce the finest Aloe Vera products in the world.”

Healing Ibiza Inspiring the imagination from 2010–2017

A

unique celebration of life, the Healing Ibiza Festival began in 2010 following a workshop with a wise healer from Peru, named Lilo, who brought her teachings to the island with a desire to unite communities of healers together in spirit and co-operation. In May 2017, after eight consecutive festivals, Healing Ibiza’s mission was completed as the festival drew to a close and celebrated its final gathering.

Whenever a group of people gather together for the greater good, the power of the collective consciousness creates an energetic frequency beyond measure. Healing Ibiza inspired the imagination of Ibiza, forming an open invitation to restore balance and harmony in people’s lives from across the world. By weaving itself into the spiritual fabric of the island and continuously building upon strong musical foundations, it has promoted deep healing and transformation across its eight-year legacy. Originally founded by island-born Toby Clarke and his wife, Belinda, together with the help of many partners, volunteers and unique individuals, they shaped and developed the Healing concept over the years. It will forever be remembered as a leading spiritual gathering that embraced the essence of Ibiza in its entirety, one that evolved into a truly magical platform which aided the natural progression of the island’s international residents and visitors alike. Healing Ibiza at Atzaro Hotel From the soft healing frequencies that were heard on arrival, to the headline musical acts; Healing Ibiza inspired so many to imagine a world with limiting constraints of the mind, and invest time in self-care and healing. The festival succeeded beyond words in driving others forward on their journeys to heal the collective mind, body and spirit; to detach from stress and old wounds, and to break free from limiting beliefs by taking transforming steps towards becoming truly authentic. A completely not-profit association, any money left over from each Healing Ibiza festival being donated towards many causes on the island. From animals, to both adults and children; charities such as the Alzheimers Society, the Ibiza Preservation Fund, Moji’s Animal Rescue Centre, APNEEF and more, all benefited from the event through received funds raised by donations taken at the door. An empowering journey, reaching nearly a full decade of success, Healing Ibiza can be thanked for a more conscious island and for the continuous transformation of the entire planet. Having given birth and life to so many other similar events island-wide, opening up doors and bringing inspiration to others in the process – its mark will be forever loved, cherished and remembered by all.

A tale of original Ibizan luxury...

Hacienda Na Xamena

I

t was in the late 1960’s that the story of the Hacienda Na Xamena began. Ibiza then was far different from what it is today, with a weekly ferry arriving from mainland Spain and that was all. At a time when the local ‘Ibicencos’ lived in isolation from the outside world, it was an era that is now looked back upon with great nostalgia.

It was during this time that many artists and hippies became fascinated with the ‘Pearl of the Balearic Islands’, as gradually word spread of the magic that presented itself upon the shores of this Mediterranean paradise. Many settled, seeking an authentic life close to nature. It was from this profound time, an era driven engulfed in creativity and freedom, that a Polish-born Belgian architect named Daniel Lipszyc naturally fell in love with the island.

In 1969, together with his wife, he began the construction of what has evolved into one of the most fabulous luxury hotels in the world, and what stands today as one of Ibiza’s most celebrated establishments. Their vision and desire at the time was to integrate rustic, stylish accommodation into natural landscape, preserving the surrounding nature with the building. This was the work of true pioneers, for there were no roads, water, nor any electricity around at the time. The creation of the infrastructure for this now iconic, boutique hotel, also promoted development of the entire north of Ibiza. The Hacienda Na Xamena officially opened its doors in 1971 with four stars. In 1988, thanks to its elegant, friendly atmosphere and attentive service; the hotel was awarded with its fifth star, the first of its kind on the island. An extension of the family behind its success, it holds and imposes itself today as one of the world’s most prestigious luxury hotels.

CAN LLUC

The warmth of a traditional country home

One virtue that shines bright in every Ibizan is an innate openmindedness and a keen sense of hospitality. This could explain many of their decisions to convert marvellous family properties into hotels, boutiques or countryside rental homes.

A

mong the most enchanting corners of this realm is the country hotel, Can Lluc, tucked away in the heart of Ibiza in a quiet valley that is dotted with thousand-year-old pine, carob, fig and olive trees. Over 2,000 grape vines sit alongside scores of wild fruit trees here, and every inch of the land exudes a distinctly Mediterranean pairing of tradition and modernity.

Can Lluc’s 20 rooms include seven doubles, five superiors and eight villas, six featuring an individual garden. Dutifully maintaining years of tradition and family treasures, married couple Lucas Prats and Tina Soriano, (pictured, above), commissioned a remodel of the estate in the year 2000, an effort masterminded by architect José Torres. The country ranch was re-styled as a comfortable boutique hotel, surrounded by nature and seasoned with a touch of relaxed luxury.

The original stone-walls, wooden roofs and exuberant gardens of centuries’ old olive and carob trees, provide an equally perfect backdrop for the fragrant jasmine and lady-of-the-night plants that abound. Taking an active role in the hotel’s decoration, the two owners worked alongside José María Velasco, a formidable player in the restoration of a large part of Ibiza’s cultural capital. Forgoing outside decoration, they opted to restore and make use of many of the original objects and tools that were left at the home.

In 2009, responding to their client’s appeals for more space and increasingly modern amenities, Can Lluc’s owners set out on a remodel of the hotel that would include six new double rooms, each a vision of minimalism. The resulting villas were devised to allow guests to enjoy the ambient nature and a maximum degree of privacy. An answer to the growing demand for weddings and events, the hotel’s most recent expansion took place in 2013 and saw the creation of the Garden & Sunset halls. Open throughout the year, Can Lluc routinely welcomes tourists from Germany, the UK, Holland, Switzerland, mainland Spain, Belgium, Austria and France. Even residents of Ibiza and Formentera are known to visit in search of a new take on their familiar paradise. In addition to adhering to the green standards of ISO 14001, a certification delivered by AENOR, Can Lluc has received honours such as the Govern Balear’s Q Calidad award and accreditation as a hotel suited for golf, cycling and hiking. Amongst other past distinctions, Can Lluc was also finalist in Conde Nast Johansen’s ‘Most Charming Hotel 2009’ contest, was picked by the readership of Traveller as one of the world’s 125 best hotels; and named one of the 10 best hotels in Spain as part of Marie Claire’s ‘Prix Gourmet’ awards.

Can Quince de Balafia

J

ust outside the village of San Lorenzo in the heart of northern Ibiza, lies the historical settlement of Balafia, where the essence of a bygone era can still be felt today. One of the few sites that survived the continuous assault of pirate attacks in the 16th and 17th centuries, Balafia recalls the faded past of an almost forgotten Islamic age.

Thought to have been a ‘Moorish Village’, the settlement at Balafia is made up of seven traditional farmhouses and three defence towers, together making up one of the most important historical sites on the island. It is here, in one of the seven privately owned homes within this unique architectural complex, that the story of Can Quince de Balafia emerges.

A place of beauty, dreams and well-being, here lies a timeless reflection of an echoed past. Can Quince’s story, the 20-year transformation of a 700-year old, former run down farming conjoint, into a luxury five-bedroom guest house, stems from the hard work and determination of family of creative freethinkers and artists; who simply refuse to let their home’s spirit be lost in time. Acquired by Belgian siblings Sophie and Colin Gotovitch in 1996, together with their family, they have turned this ancient building, part of a former agricultural stronghold, into a place of enchantment and wellness, delightfully opening up a meticulous piece of history, and their hearts, in the process. With an abundance of modern comforts, the serenity of every moment is complemented by an attentive service. Like many farmsteads, the building houses a ‘trull’ (pictured, bottom right): a purpose built room containing the equipment used for the production of olive oil. This room contains a twelve-metre stone-pine beam press and is now used as a communal space for guests. Can Quince’s 13th century defence tower, once used as a refuge for the settlement’s inhabitants to shelter from invading pirates, is the home’s prized asset. Its two vaulted storeys, renovated into luxury suites, each with their own private terrace and a roof offering guests panoramic views of the northern valleys of Ibiza.

With its unique character preserved amongst flawless surroundings, the now chic, vibrant space at Can Quince offers an eclectic mix of ambience’s to relax and embark on an epic journey through time. The home’s swimming pool, integrated into its terrace, is almost invisible from most outdoors areas; an intentional part of the design made to uphold its authentic charm. Stripped back to its foundations, restored and reclaimed, Can Quince de Balafia is today a mirror image of the hard work carried out by its proud owners. Armed with humble dreams and a duty to preserve their own piece of history for future generations, it is here – with open arms – that they invite you to discover the secret side of Ibiza.

Hostal La Torre

This authentic boutique-hotel, restaurant and music venue is a timeless reminder of what the island truly represents.

C

reated by Alan and Christian Anadon, better known as the ‘Mambo Brothers’, Hostal La Torre sits proudly on the edge of a cliff in Cap Negret, just north of San Antonio on Ibiza’s Western coast.

For hundreds of years, Ibiza has drawn people from all walks of life in search of hedonism and freedom. It is perhaps the only island on the planet capable of coining its own style of music. The third largest of the Balearic Islands, it has undergone major changes in the past few decades, yet always retained its original spirit. Representing not only a sound but also a way of life, Hostal La Torre is at the heart of the White Island’s renaissance, fusing together a unique blend of luxury, substance, charm and originality.

A place that seems to be suspended in time, ‘La Torre’ offers arguably the most beautiful sunsets on the island. Those that make the journey are rewarded with an innovative, surprising and downright genius soundtrack; music that contributes to a consistently enriching and memorable experience. With a sound that is truly synonymous with Ibiza’s soul, Hostal La Torre is a Balearic gem, taking visitors back to a time when characters like Grace Jones and George Michael fell in love with the island and changed its course forever.

A throwback to originality and freedom; Hostal La Torre peeks into a different Ibiza – the magical island – and all it truly stands for.

Hotel Es Vivé Ibiza’s original Balearic-boutique hotel

H

otel Es Vivé: Three words that are synonymous around the globe with a boutique, ‘Balearic’ lifestyle. So much more than just a hotel, Es Vivé is a vibe, a feeling; the very epitome of Ibiza’s hedonistic reputation in the modern era.

Its inception in the year 2000 saw owners Jason Bull, Jamie Khan, Neil Dawson, Max Leverett and Nick Reid come together with the common goal of creating a unique hotel that stood out from the rest. Their plan was to evolve the current premises from a modest hostel into a vibrant Ibiza destination. And with character came style, the complete package. Hotel Es Vivé soon became known as one of the most famous ‘party hotels’ on the island. It’s wild reputation, together with a round-the-clock service, quickly accorded it with iconic status. The hotel filled a niche by offering stylish accommodation in a place where anything went (and often did). Over the years, Hotel Es Vivé has played host to DJs including Sven Väth, Erick Morillo and Carl Cox, becoming famed for special ‘after hours’ sets and impromptu performances that could last for days. A revolutionary throwback, illuminated by distinctive décor, Es Vivé relished the ‘feel good’ factor of Ibiza and revelled in its many delights. In 2014, the hotel joined forces with interior designer, Sean Cochrane, and underwent a luxurious refurbishment. After pioneering the ‘party hotel’ trend, its elegant redesign shifted focus away from all-night debauchery and transformed the premises into a stylish sanctuary where guests could dip their toes into the madness of the island beyond its gates, safe in the knowledge that they had their own private oasis to return to. Staying true to its ‘Art Deco’ roots, these luxurious refinements added a feeling of distinguished opulence to Hotel Es Vivé. A tranquil wellness area with a jacuzzi and therapy rooms was also added to complement a healthier menu, special detox packages and rooftop yoga classes. Today, with its emblematic design features and wonderful attention to detail, Hotel Es Vivé has evolved into the embodiment of sophistication and luxury on the White Island. Its tropical palms, brilliant white walls and inviting pool, together form an Ibiza oasis that is truly one-of-a-kind.

P

ike’s is one of the biggest jewels in Ibiza’s glittering crown, and one of the few remaining ‘rock’n’roll’ hotels in the world that is steeped in legendary musical history. Set in a rambling, 500 year-old ‘finca’, this award-winning 25-room boutique haven, hidden in the sun drenched hills of San Antonio, truly represents the original bohemian spirit of Ibiza, and is firmly established on the map as a must visit cultural hub on the island.

Listed as one of the ‘Top 100 Hotels in the world’ by Sunday Times Travel, and winner of ‘Best Boutique Hotel’ in the prestigious White Ibiza Awards for three years running; Pike’s Hotel is set around sprawling fairytale gardens and a famous aquamarine pool (the location for Wham’s ‘Club Tropicana’ video). Restored in 2011 by Andy McKay and Dawn Hindle, founders of the world-famous Ibiza Rocks brand, Pike’s is one of the few places that still represents the authentic, carefree, Balearic spirit of the island, combining it with an up-to-the-minute, contemporary and all-round millennial style. Pike’s was originally founded in the late 1970’s by the legendary Tony Pike, an iconic figure who is now in his 80’s and still a resident at the hotel. For the last few decades, the venue has been a playground for the musical elite, with regular guests including artists such as Grace Jones, Spandau Ballet, Bon Jovi, George Michael and Freddie Mercury – the latter whom held his legendary 41st birthday party at the hotel in the infamous ‘Marrakesh Suite’. More recently, visitors have included Idris Elba, Kate Moss, Mark Ronson, Lily Allen and many more.

Steeped in musical history, Pike’s is the most famous ‘party-hotel’ on the planet.

Each season, Pike’s hosts a series of unique pop-up music, art, food and club events, as well as being a venue for some of the world’s most exclusive private parties and weddings. Head chef, Lee Milne, who has worked at award-winning restaurants including ‘Restaurant Gordon Ramsay’ and ‘The Vineyard at Stockcross’, has established ‘Room 39’ as one of the best restaurants in Ibiza, with daily mouthwatering ‘House Specials’ offered along with an extensive a-la-carte menu and a sublime, individually chosen wine list. Pike’s is famous for its weekly ‘Sunday Roast’, and too for it’s pop-up London restaurants, such as visiting chef Richard Turner’s from Hawksmoor. For those keeping active on the island, there’s a hot-pink tennis court, a whirlpool tub, and a variety of massages, fitness and yoga classes offered in the ‘Rockovery’ tent, from day to night. There are 25 comfortable and spacious rooms at Pike’s, ranging from doubles and junior suites, to the prestigious La Residencia suite. Each room has a whimsical character and a rustic, Balearic feel, housing décor that always gives a nod to the hotel’s rock’n’roll roots and often adds a surprise or two. With walls hung with stunning photographic images by Victor Spinelli and local artist Jerome Ferriere, there is of course always the essence of Ibiza on show to remind guests of the magical energy that surrounds this unique and eternal island.
