intro. Please let me welcome you to the fourth edition of photo basel, my first as curator of the fair. Having seen photo basel grow and thrive during the previous years, I was excited to join the team last fall and contribute towards its further success. Sven Eisenhut, the energetic Founding Director of photo basel, had already set in motion an impressive venture. Helping him and the wonderful photo basel team—Sandra Pfeiffer, Léa Girardin and Elwira Spychalska—to maintain, or rather accelerate, that momentum was my expressed intention. And I believe that together we have achieved yet another leap forward, that this edition of the fair offers something to you, the attending photography aficionado, that is quite special and distinguishes us from many other art fairs. We envision to become a fertile ground on which the appreciation for the medium of photography will steadily grow in terms of its artistic and discursive qualities, but obviously also as an object for exhibition and collection. Towards that end, we sought to make photo basel at Volkshaus a generous and intimate place for viewing and contemplation — front and center with an exceptional pool of 35 international exhibitors presenting a very focused and highly considered selection of art works, but also with a relevant and curated program. In a world that seems caught in ever-faster product and news cycles and that constantly strives for spectacles and superlatives, we prefer to focus on substance and quality, and let you, as our patrons, label our efforts with the appropriate descriptive adjectives. Certainly, we feel proud that quite a number of galleries will premiere emerging artists or novel projects by established artists at our fair, but we know that the new has to be embedded in an ongoing history of photography. And naturally, we would like to be considered by you as one of the best art fairs, but we can only achieve that, if we keep our eyes on continually catering to the interested public as well as the participating galleries. After all, we are in the business of bringing both parties together, being a welcoming host and as such, facilitating discovery, exchange and acquisition. We have tirelessly prepared for the this fourth edition of photo basel all year and look forward to see it unfold this coming week in June. We feel honored that you have joined us. Thank you for your interest and trust. Sincerely, Daniel Blochwitz photo basel Curator

So too did the Aperture Foundation, expanding to include the subsequent publication of books, limited edition prints and portfolios, traveling exhibitions and an educational program that includes lectures and panel discussions with artists, curators and other key players in the field of photography.
With scant resources, these prescient artists created Aperture magazine to serve the medium, photography users and fine art lovers worldwide. For more than fifty-five years, Aper-

PhotoBook Awards photo basel is excited to host the 2017 PP – Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards in June 2018 during the fair. The exhibition includes the 35 shortlisted books from the categories PhotoBook of the year, First Photobook and Catalogue of the Year. Initiated in 2012, the PP – Aperture Foundation PhotoBook awards celebrate the photobook’s contribution to the evolving narrative of photography. Now in its sixth year, the exhibition of the books selected for the PhotoBook Awards offers a remarkable snapshot of the state of photobook publishing. The shortlist is drawn from over one thousand books that have been submitted from around the world. The selection criteria consider the quality of the photo-
graphs, the sequencing of work, the relevance and timeliness of the book’s contents, and its characteristics as an object, including its graphic design, editorial structure, and the quality of its fabrication. The resulting Shortlist exhibition showcases and makes evident the highly sophisticated nature of photobook production today, in which there is a tremendous plurality of styles—from the most baroque to the extremely minimalist. Most critically, it emphasizes the primary role of the photobook as part of contemporary photographic process.
ALPA AWARD In cooperation with the Swiss camera manufacturer ALPA速 as well as a private collector from Z端rich, photo basel introduces a new purchase award for the best artist at photo basel, the ALPA AWARD 2018. This will be the first year the ALPA AWARD is presented to an outstanding photographer, but it is intended as a reoccuring feature of photo basel. From now on, every year a small jury will select an artist from all the artistic positions on display at the booths of the exhibiting galleries. The ALPA AWARD winner will be announced during
the week of photo basel, and one will be work purchased by the private collector from the gallery representing the artist. In addition and as part of the ALPA AWARD, ALPA速 will donate a cash prize or ALPA速 camera system to the winning photographer.
