In 2014, at the initiative of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and in accordance with the Decree of the Sverdlovsk Region Government, the International Youth Cultural Center was established under the aegis of the Sverdlovsk State Philharmony, and its main objectives were to develop international cultural relations, exchange experience in arranging and holding festivals and competitions, and gain international reputation of the Sverdlovsk region as one of the centers of musical art. The first project was implemented by the Center in 2014. The Summer Orchestral Academy was held on July 1–13 to increase the level of professional performance skills of young Russian and foreign musicians. Artists of the Ural Youth Symphony Orchestra, as well as of the groups from Europe, Asia and America were invited to undertake a probation. Oleg Caetani, a famous Italian conductor and music activist, gave his consent to be the Artistic Director of the Academy. He led the orchestra rehearsals, and prominent European educators and performers were invited to carry out consultations and workshops: Mr. Hans-Joachim Greiner (viola), Professor of the Berlin University of the Arts, Mr. Klaus Thunemann (bassoon), Professor of the Reina Sofia School of Music in Madrid, Mr. Christian-Friedrich Dallmann (French horn), Professor of the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, and Mr. Dmitry Vasiliev (violin), the Honored Artist of Russia. These major efforts resulted in the emergence of a new group – the Tchaikovsky International Youth Orchestra. Composed of talented young musicians from around the world, it gave a series of concerts in the Sverdlovsk region presenting some works by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a composer whose creative work plays an essential role in the global musical culture and whose fortune is associated with the city of Alapaevsk in the Ural region. The groups premiere concert was part of the Tchaikovsky Festival held on July 10 in the Great Hall of the Sverdlovsk Philharmony in Ekaterinburg. Daniil Trifonov, a pianist and a winner of the Grand Prix of the 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition, was a soloist. The following concerts were held at the Kamensk-Uralsky – Russias Bell Capital Festival and at the Open-Air Family Music Festival titled St. Peters Day in Nizhnyaya Sinyachikha, dedicated to the name day of this great composer. The foundation and concert activity of the Tchaikovsky International Youth Orchestra found great support among music critics, Russian and foreign press, and audience, so it was decided at the level of the Ministry of Culture of the Sverdlovsk region, to make the Summer Orchestral Academy a traditional event.
Pavel KREKOV Minister of Culture of the Sverdlovsk Region
Culture is an endless and continuous process of spiritual creation. It is important for development of the state and society not only to preserve everything that has been created by many generations before us, but also to create at present, to give impetus to cultural initiatives and undertakings. Particular attention should be paid to young people who have just begun their life journey and professional career. We must give them an opportunity to express themselves, and to learn from the experience of their peers from around the world by communicating with them. We are delighted that the International Youth Cultural Center established at the premises of the Sverdlovsk Philharmony copes with these tasks. The Summer Orchestral Academy and the Tchaikovsky International Youth Orchestra have already become bright events of cultural life of the Sverdlovsk region, and are honored both in Russia and abroad. It is very important that the Summer Orchestral Academy is getting to the new level in the year of the 175th anniversary of the birth of Tchaikovsky. This year the Tchaikovsky International Youth Orchestra is going to perform outside the Sverdlovsk region – in the Volga region at the International Music Festival Classics on the Volga to be held in Togliatti. I am sure that the international youth group soon will be on tour not only in Russia but abroad. Moreover, it will be a logical continuation of our joint efforts to promote classical music and Russian musical culture, as well as evidence of the high quality of musical training at the Summer Orchestral Academy of the Sverdlovsk Philharmony. Such projects as the Summer Orchestral Academy form the contribution of the Sverdlovsk region in strengthening of international relations and this is a step towards the world, as well as evidence of our openness and readiness for cultural dialogue.
A year has passed from the opening of the Summer Orchestral Academy under the aegis of the Ural Youth Symphony Orchestra, and we may take a first look at the results. Young musicians have found new friends, become more aware of their foreign colleagues, they have become more professional and show different attitude to their work. The opportunity to take part in workshops by renowned European coaches and performers is a great incentive both for the performing artists of the Ural Youth Symphony Orchestra and their peers from around the world. We are very pleased that among the attendees of the Summer Orchestral Academy, there are those who were members of the Tchaikovsky Orchestra last year, and those who learned about the opportunity of probation for the first time and immediately agreed to come to Russia. We are pleased that their first contact with our country and the great Russian culture will start in the capital of the Urals – city of Ekaterinburg. We hope to justify their confidence and create all conditions to continue professional development and mastery of orchestral performance. We are grateful to foreign educators who share our goals and have found time in their busy schedule to give classes for young musicians and are willing to share their experience and secrets of mastery. It is impossible to comprehend all the secrets not being open to the world, not adopting knowledge and performing techniques of foreign colleagues, not studying European musical traditions being created for centuries. It is extremely important to remember that our mission is to help young European and Asian musicians to understand and feel how the Russian music should sound. Projects of the International Youth Cultural Center of the Sverdlovsk Philharmony are looking towards the future! I think that the public will be able to evaluate the real results of our work very soon. Alexander KOLOTURSKY Director of the Sverdlovsk State Philharmony, winner of the State Prize of the Russian Federation, member of the Russian Presidential Council for Culture and Art
In 2015, the whole world celebrates the 175th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. One of the central events of the celebration of this significant date in the Sverdlovsk region is the Summer Orchestral Academy with concerts given by the Tchaikovsky International Youth Orchestra. Moreover, this year the project is getting to the new level, and, along with performances at the opening of the Tchaikovsky Festival in Ekaterinburg and Kamensk-Uralsky, the international symphonic group is going to take part in the 8th International Music Festival Classics on the Volga to be held in the city of Togliatti, Samara region. Mr. Enkhe, the Chief Conductor of the Ural Youth Symphony Orchestra was invited to become an Artistic Director of the Summer Orchestral Academy. He offered a concert program presenting different facets of the creative work by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Along with the Fourth Symphony, the musicians will perform the famous suites from ballets Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker. In addition, the artists of the Tchaikovsky Orchestra will perfect their ability to interact with the soloist by joint efforts with the winner of the 12th Tchaikovsky International Competition Alexei Nabioulin by presenting the rarely performed Concert Fantasia for Piano and Orchestra to the public. Cooperation with Maestro Fabio Mastrangelo and young Russian opera singers – finalists of Grand Opera project on Culture TV channel will be an important professional experience. Like last year, a significant component of training in the Academy is to work in groups, attend master classes and individual consultations with well-known European musicians, orchestra group leaders of the RTVE Symphony Orchestra (The Spanish Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra) Maria Antonia Rodriguez (flute) and Jose Chanza (French horn). The idea of the Summer Orchestral Academy resonated a lot with orchestral conductors Yalcin Adigezalov (Azerbaijan) and Borje Quintas (Spain), paying a great attention to international projects and support of young performers. They assisted in selection and invitation of talented musicians to participate in the Tchaikovsky International Youth Orchestra.
The creative work by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky has become the domain of all mankind playing an essential role in the Russian culture. Everything that is related to the composers life and fortune has the same paramount importance as it gives an opportunity to take another look at his body of work and distinguish what originates in remote ages and what has become revolutionary in its own way, remaining at the same time deeply personal. The biography of Pyotr Tchaikovsky is studied in great detail. It is well known that he was born in Votkinsk, traveled a lot around Europe, visited the United States of America, and lived in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and a small town of Klin located near Moscow. However, this list of “Tchaikovsky’s places” is not exhausted. A part of his childhood was spent in the city of Alapaevsk in the Ural region. The mansion, where his family lived, has hosted the Memorial House of P.I. Tchaikovsky for 50 years. That period of time appeared in the writings of the future composer as a “special world of Childhood, Family, Love, and Happiness.” Here he began to show his talent and improvise on the piano. Pyotr Ilyich always remembered with love this town and the serene time spent there. Perhaps, it is the nature of the Ural region that was glorified by the master in The Seasons piano cycle and Winter Daydreams symphony. In adulthood, the composers dream was to visit Alapaevsk again, but unfortunately it was not to be. Works by P.I. Tchaikovsky play an essential role in repertoire of the leading on-stage performance groups of the region: the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra, the Ural Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the Symphonic Choir of the Sverdlovsk Philharmony. However, a special role in promoting the heritage of the outstanding Russian composer is assigned to the Tchaikovsky International Youth Orchestra composed of the talented performers representing the musical culture of different countries. This group has gathered together in Ekaterinburg during the Summer Orchestral Academy organized by the Sverdlovsk State Philharmony since 2014.
