“I was born in the Urals,” so begins the autobiography of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, recalling “the provincial town in the Vyatka province of the Urals,” where he spent his childhood. Votkinsk was the tiny native land of this genius of Russian music – one of the many towns founded around industry and which in the 19th century were part of the system of Urals mountain districts managed from Ekaterinburg. Tchaikovsky’s life path became even more closely intertwined with the Urals when in 1849 his family arrived in the town of Alapayevsk, where the composer’s father – Ilya Petrovich – had been invited by the general manager of the private factories in Alapayevsk. That brief period in Alapayevsk was very important in Tchaikovsky’s life. From his letters it is clear that he remembered it as a special world of Childhood, Family, and Love. Those fifteen months were a time of serenity, during which Tchaikovsky was surrounded by family and his twin brothers were born. One of them, Modest, become his closest friend and first biographer, the founder of the Tchaikovsky Museum in Klin and author of the libretto for the opera The Queen of Spades. Alapayevsk was a special period in the formation of the composer’s identity, when a still vague notion of his future destiny was only beginning to take shape. It was here that Pyotr Tchaikovsky first tried his hand at musical improvisation, and hence Alapayevsk can with confidence be called the birthplace of Tchaikovsky as a composer. What is even more important is that here we can attempt to immerse ourselves in the atmosphere in which he lived and began to create, because the house in which the Tchaikovsky family lived has not only survived – it is now a museum dedicated to that great composer. And although Pyotr Ilyich left the Urals in 1850 to enroll in the Imperial School of Jurisprudence in St. Petersburg, he retained the memories of the happiness he experienced in Alapayevsk. Because, as he later wrote, “the enthusiasm one feels for the arts when young leaves a lasting impression on one’s life.”

The International Youth Cultural Center was founded in 2014 at the initiative of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and by the decree of the Government of the Sverdlovsk Region. It merged into the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic. The main objectives of the Center are to develop international cultural relations, to build an environment for creativity, self-actualization and professional growth of young musicians, to support the international reputation of the Sverdlovsk Region as a leading music center. The Summer Orchestra Academy is a keystone project of the Center. The idea was enthusiastically supported by RCCR Projects GmbH, a partner of the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic, well-known for its initiatives in culture and international cooperation. The Academy welcomes promising musicians from the Ural Youth Symphony Orchestra as well as young performers from Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The Orchestra Academy conducted training sessions for young musicians in Ekaterinburg in 2014 and 2015. Master classes, group and orchestra rehearsals were conducted by famous musicians and professors. The signature project of the Summer Academy – the International Youth Tchaikovsky Orchestra – is represented by musicians studying at the academy. The orchestra repertoire invariably includes compositions by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, the composer whose artistic legacy takes a prominent place in the world’s culture and whose life was connected with Alapayevsk, a town in the Urals. In 2017, the German conductor Bruno Weil agreed to become the artistic director of the Summer Orchestra Academy. The renowned conductor will work together with Professors Ulf Klausenitzer (violin) and Christian Kunert (bassoon). The Tchaikovsky International Youth Orchestra will give concerts in Ekaterinburg and Alapayevsk (Urals); then it will visit Berlin, the capital of Germany. The program of the Summer Orchestra Academy for 2017 is supported by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany and is linked to the Russian-German Year of Youth Exchanges. Tchaikovsky Orchestra – 2015. Chief Conductor – Enkhe
I am happy to welcome all the participants of the Summer Orchestra Academy! For three years Ekaterinburg has been honored to host the event bringing together young musicians from different countries of the world. The idea born in 2014 proved its worth and significance. Young orchestra musicians are given the inestimable opportunity to reach professional excellence, to work with outstanding conductors, soloists and professors. It is important for us that our initiatives generate interest from the global music community, attract attention of the public and have all-round support from Evgeny Kuivashev, Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region. The Summer Academy and the newly-born International Youth Tchaikovsky Orchestra perfectly show that art and music serve as a universal language, which needs no translation and unites people. We are glad that Summer Academy 2017 was able to keep the best practices of the previous years: master classes, meet-the-artist events and informal communication, sightseeing tours around Ekaterinburg and the Sverdlovsk Region, and, of course, concerts! This year the Tchaikovsky Orchestra is going to take a new step forward: it will introduce itself outside Russia, at the famous festival — Young Euro Classic in Berlin. It is a great privilege and responsibility; however, I am sure that the orchestra will pass this examination with flying colors! Alexander KOLOTURSKY Director of the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic, Member of the Russian Presidential Council for Culture and Art
Dear Friends, I am happy to introduce you to the Summer Orchestra Academy celebrating its second anniversary thanks to the support and cooperation of RCCR Projects GmbH and Sverdlovsk Philharmonic. Academy – 2017 is linked to the successful completion of the Russian-German Year of Youth Exchanges. Directed by the renowned German conductor Bruno Weil, students from German music educational institutions and musicians of the Ural Youth Symphony Orchestra are given a week to prepare an ambitious program including outstanding works by Russian and German classical composers: Piano Concerto No. 1 by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Symphony No. 7 by Ludwig van Beethoven. In addition, the young people have an excellent opportunity to get to know each other better, to communicate, and to get a better understanding of their peers’ life in other countries. Our main objective is to help young people form their own unbiased opinion about Russia and Germany. It is young people who will take responsibility for building our future. This future depends on their knowledge, attitude and perception of our countries. It is wonderful that our project – the Summer Orchestra Academy – takes place in Ekaterinburg known for its dynamic growth and intense cultural life. Let the energy of the city and the entire Urals become the “fuel” that will power Russian and German relations! Tatjana REXROTH Good luck to all of us! Director RCCR Projects GmbH Berlin
Dear Music Enthusiasts, Music is a universal language. Through music people from different parts of the world can form an understanding even when they cannot comprehend each other’s words. Creating positive and productive connections between people from different countries and foreign cultures is part of our job at the German Consulate General in Ekaterinburg. Therefore we are very happy to be able to support this exceptional project which aims at forming bonds between young people from Germany and Russia. It is an exemplary contribution to the German-Russian Year of Youth Exchange. The Academy invites students from German universities and colleges to spend two weeks in Ekaterinburg, working with musicians of the Ural Youth Symphony Orchestra. Together they are playing old classics of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky under the direction of German renowned musicians Bruno Weil, Ulf Klausenitzer and Christian Kunert and will perform several concerts to present their musical skills. In addition to playing music together, the young artists have the chance to get to know each other. Understanding one another is the first step on the way to cooperation. That is why this Academy is able to create a solid foundation on which future relations between all of our countries can prosper! Dr. Stefan KEIL Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Ekaterinburg
Dear music lovers, I am happy to welcome the Summer Orchestra Academy in our region. This project will put the finishing touch to the Russian-German Year of Youth Exchanges. The invitation to participate in the project has been extended to students from German music educational institutions and musicians of the Ural Youth Symphony Orchestra. Young musicians from two countries will be united both by joint creative work and mutual interest in the Urals’ history and culture. They will also be teamed up by participation in themed events. The International Youth Tchaikovsky Orchestra will start its life through joint efforts of experienced conductors and professors. The unique orchestra will give concerts in Berlin, Ekaterinburg and Alapayevsk famous for the HouseMuseum of the renowned composer. I wish rewarding work and creative collaboration to all the project participants and esthetic enjoyment, vibrant emotions, and impressions to the audiences!
