APRIL/MAY 2023

Hello Canadian Lakers! It’s that time of year again, time for spring excitement and activities. Canadian Lakes has three beautiful golf courses that will soon be active with good cheer and friendly competition. The Royal Grille will soon debut their high season hours with updated menus and specials. More exciting things on the horizon is the opening of the Outdoor Pool, boating season, concerts at the Reuther Music Pavilion, and the summer parade followed by our soon to be famous fireworks at the Highland Haus. WOW! That’s a lot to look forward to, and in this issue, you will read about more exciting things to do this time of year.

If you are reading this, then you have a few minutes to get caught up on what’s going on in Canadian Lakes. In this issue of The Canadian Laker read General Manager, Greg Babbitt’s updates to the community, our CLPOC Board President, Paul Szymkowicz’s message, and get details on the 16th Annual Community-Wide Garage Sale on page 11.

Joyce Wilcox provides her ever anticipated Joyce’s Choices book reviews in this issue, along with a feature about a very cool member from the community. This very cool guy likes cool cars and likes helping various charities. He is also in part responsible for keeping the Cruisin’ at the Castle Car Show alive and well each year. His name is Marshall Henry, and you should read about him on page 33.

Each issue we like to bring you Chris Zimmerman’s Outdoor Mystery. Chris seems to always be on assignment bringing us the latest on everything outdoors. This issue he takes us to Paris Park where we explore the hatchery and learn a little bit about another cool member here in Canadian Lakes, Jeff Abel.

I hope this issue of The Canadian Laker finds you on a beautiful day and I hope you are able to enjoy it. With spring already here and summer on its way, we have made it to the busiest seasons in Canadian Lakes. For easy reference before the start of our busy season, we have provided a list of phone numbers you should save if you have not already. This list can always be located on the home page of our website, members. canadianlakes.org, as well. Cheers to an amazing spring and summer!

Ihope we are all Thinking Spring! The calendar says spring begins March 20th, and hopefully, by the time you are reading this, winter will be over, and spring will have begun. With spring, it’s the time of year to start thinking about all the amenity opportunities our great community provides. With cooperation from Mother Nature, our golf courses will be in full swing, “literally,” many of you will be contemplating launching your boats, the campground will be opening, the pool and fitness center will be well used, the tennis and pickleball courts will be active, and the Royal Grille will be very busy. With the start of another busy season upon us, I am feeling quite confident this one will be great.

ADVANCE NOTICE

I have two items I want to make you aware of early. First is the Canadian Lakes Annual Community-Wide Garage Sale. Once again, this popular event will occur during Memorial Day weekend on Friday, May 26th and Saturday, May 27th. Please see the announcement on page 11 for all the details.

Secondly, I wanted to give you advance notice regarding the 4th of July fireworks this year. The fireworks this year will be occurring Saturday July 8th. This will also be the date for the Community Parade that is such a big hit for the kids, of all ages.

MAINTENANCE

Early spring will consist of pothole repairs, clean-up of golf courses and common areas, asphalt road sweeping, repairing turfed areas from the snowplow, tree and brush clearing, etc. I ask that you please be patient with the staff as it will take time to complete all of these maintenance items.

PROJECT COMPLETIONS

We have been and will continue to implement our new Northstar software at all locations. Full implementation will continue as we also work out the “bugs” along the way, but we are nearing completion. Once complete, we believe this will be a great upgrade for the

community and staff. I would ask that you please be patient with staff at the amenity locations as they continue to learn this new software and do their best to provide you with excellent customer service.

FINANCE

The new Fiscal Year 2024 will have started April 1st and the Board will have approved the budget for this fiscal year at their March meeting. This fiscally sound budget will be our guideline in which to manage the community. This budget also has projected amenity income of $6,025,224 and an expense level of $5,098,591 that hopefully we will meet. There will also be a number of Replacement Reserve projects we intend to complete, as well as some Capital Improvement projects.

COMMITTEES

Again, this year, I will continue to have General Manager Committees. The committees this year will be Building & Grounds, Compliance, Golf, Lakes & Environmental, Marketing & Awareness, and Restaurant. Some of these committees meet year around, while some are seasonal. These committee members assist my Department Heads with operational issues, community input, active ideas, etc. I am very appreciative of the support from members who volunteer their time and efforts to serve on these committees.

IN CLOSING

April is National Volunteer Month. And modern life can be busy and complicated, so it’s always impressive to me when so many members are able and willing to give their time and talents, in so many different ways, to this great community. Especially when many are also volunteering for other organizations, schools, charities, etc.

As we all get busy with the start of the summer season, I want to remind each of you to please be safe and courteous to others and enjoy another great season here in Canadian Lakes!

16TH ANNUAL COMMUNITY-WIDE

Friday, May 5th and no later than Saturday, May 20th for your location to be placed on the map being provided to potential shoppers.

The CLPOC will be advertising outside Canadian Lakes so persons from Mecosta County will be aware of the event. Maps showing the locations participating in the garage sale will be available at the CLPOC office, beginning Tuesday, May 23rd, in the afternoon.

Our community sign policy remains in effect. If you want signs for your garage sale, you can pick up a set at the CLPOC Office for a deposit of $20. These are the only “official” garage sale sign(s), limit 2 signs per sale, at the CLPOC Office (no other type of signs will be permitted). Upon returning the official sign(s), in the same condition as they were received, to the CLPOC Office no later than Monday, June 5th, you will be refunded $10 of your deposit.

Got stuff to sell? Like going to garage sales? The 16TH Annual Canadian Lakes Community-Wide Garage Sale is expected to take place on Friday, May 26th and Saturday, May 27th, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Members wanting to participate must register at the CLPOC Office beginning

Again, this year, Canadian Lakes Property Owners are encouraged to combine sale sites with two or three households, if permitted and possible. This tends to congregate more buyers, reduce neighborhood traffic, and makes marketing of one’s treasures a little easier. It is also a great way to socialize and get better acquainted with your neighbors.

Our team at McLaren is built on a culture of quality. Since day one, we’ve been passionate with providing the best care to the Mount Pleasant community.

That’s why we’re proud to be the only 5-star CMS-rated hospital in the area and to have the best possible safety rating from Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade with our ninth Grade A in a row.

From the Board

Paul L. Szymkowicz President pls.clpoc@gmail.com

This past winter certainly has been strange to say the least. Typically, we get some snow accumulation with a few storms mixed in. This year, it seems like it has been one storm after another and not just across Michigan but across the entire nation. Thankfully, we have not had the bitter cold that we have had in the past. We are all looking forward to the snow melting and the golf courses turning green. Signaling the start of spring.

Just over two years ago, COVID-19 was just getting underway, and I can still remember all the precautions and restrictions placed upon us. Since that time, vaccines and booster shots have become widely available. Personally, I have more friends and relatives that have gotten COVID-19 within the last eight months after being vaccinated, than I did during the first two years of the pandemic. Thankfully, most of them had been vaccinated and had very mild symptoms. I also tested positive and had none of the major symptoms, except for a mild headache and I lost my voice. If not for taking the test, I would not have known that I was covid positive. COVID-19 is not going away anytime soon, so please continue to practice safe contact procedures and if you do not feel well, get tested. It is up to each one of us to do what we can to help stop the spread of COVID-19. By the time you receive this issue of the Canadian Laker

magazine, boats and personal watercraft will start to go out on the main lakes for summer use. Remember, there is only one boat launch where launching your boat is allowed and the main boat launch is by The Pine’s Office. It is extremely helpful if each member checks to verify that they have all their required stickers before they get to the launch site. If there is a line, please be courteous and wait your turn.

The Canadian Lakes Community-Wide Garage Sale will once again be held on Memorial Day weekend. This event brings in a lot of guests from the surrounding area. Traffic congestion has been high during this event. Please take extra care when traveling on the roads.

I would like to wish all our members that leave us for warmer climates during the winter months a safe return, and we all look forward to being reunited with friends and family.

The new software launch should now be underway, and I would like to thank our staff, employees, and volunteers that helped make this transition as smooth as possible. An incredible amount of time and effort was put into this project, and we expect to enjoy its benefits for years to come.

With all the positive momentum that we have gained over the last two years, I am excited to see what this summer and the rest of this year has instore for all of us.

I would like to thank our employees, staff, and all our volunteers that help make Canadian Lakes the truly remarkable community that it is today.

LAKESIDE SUMMER CONCERT SERIES

HAS IT REALLY BEEN 10 YEARS? Yes, the Canadian Lakes Reuther Music Pavilion has been the place to hear live music and enjoy beautiful summer evenings on the shores of Canadian Lakes since the first concert 10 years ago! On June 30, 2013, Rick Reuther along with Mary Rademacher & Allstar Band played the official opening concert, so we are thrilled to feature these talented musicians for the first concert of the 10th Anniversary Season! Rick’s father and longtime Canadian Lakes resident, Ken Reuther conceived the pavilion and donated funds for construction, and although Ken passed in 2015, his memory lives on with great musical performances at his pavilion every summer for the past 10 years.

The Lakeside Summer Concert Series this season will feature bands brought back by popular demand, along with a few new bands for a variety of music genre — there will be something for everyone! “Save the Date” and mark your calendars for these concert dates: Sunday 6/11, Saturday 6/17, Sunday 6/25, Saturday 7/8, Saturday 7/22, Saturday 8/5 and Saturday 8/19.

More details will be announced in the June/July issue of The Canadian Laker. Be sure to “like” our Facebook page, Canadian Lakes Reuther Music Pavilion to stay up to date. If you would like to join the music committee or would like to volunteer in a supporting role on concert dates, please contact David Spieker at david.spieker@gmail.com.

ADVERTISING & PROMOTIONS

We are gearing up for high season in the Marketing Department. High season in Canadian Lakes is a very busy time for my department, not only are we gearing up for different events, but we are rolling out all our advertising for the spring and summer. 2023 Marketing will move forward with digital & broadcast campaigns, audience & marketplace targeting, special promotions, as well as social targeting and re-targeting. Some of these things are new to the Marketing Department and some of these are tried and true. Analytics are available in almost every outlet and platform and will be reviewed for adjustments.

On deck first will be Mojo’s Mother’s Day Lake House giveaway. We partner with Mojo in the Morning and iHeart

radio to deliver a huge promotion across three markets. One lucky radio listener will win a three-night stay at a lakefront home here in Canadian Lakes. What does this do for us and why do we do it? Canadian Lakes gets 117 mentions (live/contesting), homepage on Channel955.com, subpage on Channel955.com & Mojo in the Morning blog post, inclusion in Eblasts, and many social media posts.

Marketing will continue to host radio personality and influencer, On Air Mike, and his family throughout the summer and into fall. We will continue to host him until he becomes too much for us to afford, he’s that good. I have worked in the Marketing Department for five years now and so far, he is the only one, only promotion that makes our summer inquiries triple in volume.

NORTHSTAR, WEBSITE, AND MOBILE APP

The new website is ready to go, and we should be launching any day now, but hopefully by the time you receive this issue, the new website is up and running. After we launch the new website, our focus will immediately turn to the mobile app. More details to come on that as we navigate through the process.

SUMMER VIBES

The Marketing Department is looking forward to summer and seeing Canadian Lakes busy and full of excitement again! The spring and summer months bring out the best in our community and it’s always refreshing to see. Let’s spread some positivity, whether in-person or over the web. Canadian Lakes is a private, recreational community that is beautiful and rich in nature and

ASSOCIATIONCANADIAN LAKES

Well by golly we’ve made it through another Michigan Winter ... it’s all spring flowers, green grass, sunshine, boating and golf for the next seven months ahead. Somehow it always amazes me how our four winter months seem so much longer than the seven warm months of the year. I know you are thinking old Harold must not be too good at math ... that’s only 11 months. Well, you would be correct that I’m not good at math, but I am able to count to 12. November isn’t either summer or winter. We can’t boat (boats need to be out of the lakes November first), we can’t golf (courses close November first). But the Canadian Lakes Association keeps us very busy with several events between the end of October and November.

Save The Date

FOR A NEW CLA EVENT!

On Friday, June 9, at 6:00pm at the Castle, the Canadian Lakes Association will be hosting a membership drive. This is a new Event, and will take the place of our traditional Community Information Day, and our Newcomers Meet & Greets. Please join us for a Pizza, Breadstick and Salad dinner. This is another “free” Event, complements of the CLA. We will share with you what the CLA is and what we provide for Canadian Lakes. We will have many of our CLA Sanctioned Club Leaders on hand for you to meet, and receive information on their Clubs, which offer the gamut of Arts & Crafts, Cards & Games, Music, Health & Fitness, Special Interests, Sports and Study Groups. This will be a great opportunity to meet new friends, share some laughs, and get informed on everything the Canadian Lakes Association has to offer. So, COME JOIN THE FUN WITH US ON JUNE 9th!

Speaking of the CLA, I have some exciting news to share. We have four new CLA Board Members! We congratulate and welcome TJ Curry, Laurel McClean, Eric Richards, and Stacey Wesley. This is the largest influx of CLA Board Members since 2020 when Marsha and I joined the CLA Board. We are all very pleased they are joining our CLA Board family! You won’t have to wait long to meet them because we have our annual CLA Easter Egg Hunt coming up April 8th, and all of us CLA board members will be out making a big nest for the Easter Bunny to lay his eggs in. This is always a very exciting day for our youngest generation of Canadian Lakes members, along with some of our very “youngest at heart” members.

Then right after our Easter Egg Hunt Event is our annual CLA Kite Day. CLA members of all ages will be at the Canadian Lakes airstrip filling the air with colorful kites, provided “free” by the CLA. There will also be treats for the kids, sponsored by Sweeney-Holbeck-Edison Insurance Agency. This is always a fun-filled event for all ages of CLA Members. This is one of our CLA MEMBER ONLY EVENTS, so make sure you have your CLA Membership Card in order to attend.

Hopefully most of you have noted over the last few years the Canadian Lakes Association has been “changing with the times” with the addition of younger family members, which is very exciting to our community. We have been adding things like our Kids Corner and our “find the character” in the monthly Lite Lines newsletter. Many

of our current CLA board members have young children or grandchildren and we have noticed more often than not, they have a phone or tablet in their hands. We thought maybe we could give kids a reason to pick up a printed copy of our Lite Lines each month and actually read it, if their parents thought it was appropriate and FUN. We have also added “kids door prize drawings” at many of our events.

So, for those of you younger parents out there who are not yet CLA Members, or for Grandparents who enjoy your grandchildren as much as we all do, we need you to come JOIN THE FUN and support the CLA! You will see listed on this page many of the events we provide throughout the year for the Canadian Lakes community. We cannot do all of this without your support. Membership in the CLA is only $30 a year, which includes your monthly Lite Lines newsletter, which not only gives you, your kids, and grandkids opportunities to win prizes each month, but keeps you informed of all of the upcoming CLA events. You also receive our annual Membership Directory and Buyer’s Guide, and our CLA Membership Card that will get you into all our events and enter you into our monthly CLA Membership Appreciation Drawing. It is most definitely the best $30 you can spend for you and your family.

A lot of Canadian Lakes members think that

when they pay their CLPOC dues, this automatically makes them a CLA Member. It does not; this membership is in addition to those dues. So please go to our website at canadianlakesassociation.org and print off a copy of our membership form. Or you can pick one up at our CLA Information Desk located just inside the Central Office. Or you can call, text, or email me and I will get you a form.

So, COME JOIN THE FUN and join us at our many CLA Events, and together we can all make this 2023 Summer our best one yet!

Stay Healthy, Safe and Strong!

Canadian Lakes Library

Did you know that Canadian Lakes has its own library? We sure do! Do you know where our little library is located? Right next door to the CLPOC Main Office!

Let me tell you a little something about our community library. It is run by hard working volunteers who live in Canadian Lakes and is open seven days a week. We have all kinds of books to choose from. From romance to adventure, drama to history, even a children’s and teen section. If that doesn’t pique your interest, perhaps a DIY, gardening or home decorating magazine might just be the thing for you? And if that isn’t enough, we have jigsaw puzzles galore, some DVDs and VHS tapes. Even better, there is no check out. That’s right!! You can take out a book or any of the other items and return them when you are ready. Our library gladly takes donations of soft cover books only for the adults and hard or soft cover for the kids. If you haven’t stopped by the Canadian Lakes Library yet, today would be a great day to check us out.

19th Annual Kid’s Ice Fishing Derby Results

Private Status of Canadian Lakes

All the lakes within Canadian Lakes are classified as PRIVATE. Access to the lake waters is limited to only Canadian Lakes members and authorized guests.

MDNR Fishing Regulations and Fishing License requirements apply to all Canadian Lakes.

AROUND 35 KIDS along with many adults, attended the Kid’s Ice Fishing Derby, and every kid caught one or more bluegill, crappie, perch, or bass. One kid stated that he caught 48 with his mother alongside, who verified that. Two pike were pulled in by kids and another broke the line. Overall, the fish were biting better than we have ever seen in all the years of this derby. Besides fishing, the kids and adults enjoyed hot chocolate and donuts provided by the Mecosta County Optimists Club.

In the free raffle we had 30 total prizes. Thanks to the individuals who donated the prizes and for the bait donated by Ace Hardware. Thanks to Josh Reed, and another MDNR officer who attended and helped the kids catch fish. Thanks to the CL Fishing Club members who worked all morning to make this happen: Dave Baker, Jeff Abel, Mike Dick, Mark Ouderkirk, Jo Alex, Wally Kiehler, and Dale Doepker, plus Jim Seeley and Sam Steele from the Optimists Club. The ice conditions were great, and we had sunshine all morning, which more than compensated for the cold temperature.

23rd Annual Canadian Lakes Bass Tournament

THIS TOURNAMENT will be held on Saturday, June 24, 2023. This is a twoperson team event from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The entry fee is $25 for each fisherman in two-person teams with optional $10 fee per boat for Big Bass Awards. Registration

Meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month from April to October at 7 p.m. in the Alpine Haus. Fishing Fun Night

PIKE FISHING FUN NIGHT will be on Saturday, May 20th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Just show up at Pierce Beach by 6:00 p.m., register, fish for three hours, catch, measure, release, and record your catch. Return to the beach by 8:00 p.m. for awards and pizza. Entry is $7 for Fishing Club members, $8 for others.

Protect our Loons and Their Nests

We normally have three loon nests on our Canadian Lakes each spring. They lay eggs between the first of May and early June, and normally hatch 28 days later. At Far West Lake the loons normally nest on the island near the center of the lake. A “Keep Off” sign is placed on the island whenever there is nesting activity. Please, do not go on or near the island while the sign is posted. After they leave the nest, the sign will be removed and people can use the island for the rest of the year, but please be protective of this island gem. On East Lake and Lake of the Clouds, they normally nest on artificial nesting islands (ANI) built for them, so please stay at least 100 feet clear of these nests and loons in the water.

WE LOVE OUR LOONS, HELP US PROTECT THEM! If you have any questions, call Dale Doepker at 972-8663.

MYS T ERIES

Willing and Abel ... Canadian Lakes resident seeks makeover for fish hatchery

Talk about a trip down memory lane. When I first caught wind of the Paris Fish Hatchery’s plans for a makeover, I had no idea how old the facility was. First commissioned in 1881, the hatchery was once home to thousands of brown and rainbow trout that were released into area waterways. Its fish production contributed to the lore and majesty of Michigan’s reputation as a sportsman’s paradise. After all, if there aren’t any fish to catch, fishing wouldn’t be any fun.

Located just a few miles north of Big Rapids on Northland Drive, the hatchery, nearby Muskegon River and White Pine Trail, plus a replica of the Eiffel Tower, make it a hub of interesting attractions for a spring day trip.

After the Michigan Department of Natural Resources closed the hatchery in 1964, Mecosta County Parks superintendent — and Canadian Lakes’ resident — Jeff Abel said that the park service acquired the facility in 1973. Once the grounds were refurbished, it opened to the public in July of 1976. The hatchery raised thousands of trout from ‘76 until covid closed the operation several years ago.

“We really weren’t a hatchery in the purest sense,” Abel said, “the fish arrived at our place as fingerlings in the spring of the year. We raised them until the fall, when the fingerlings had grown to be five or six inches long.” As soon as trout are that size, Abel said, they’re better suited to avoid predation.

The actual egg/fertilization process was — and still is — conducted at the DNR’s Harietta State Fish Hatchery, south of Mesick.

As for the renovations, Abel says their goal is to bring the former hatchery up to accepted building codes. “As it stands, the park complex does not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act,” Abel said. “Inside the old building, we would like to convert it to banquet facilities. The bathrooms, walkways, and parking lot needs updating, so everybody can enjoy the park inside and out. The fish raising pond needs updated, too.”

There is one “pond” just south of the park’s old headquarters building on the east side of Northland Drive. The pond is encased in cement and is home to giant rainbow trout. “Some of the rainbows are six or seven pounds,” Abel said. “For twenty-five cents you can get a handful

26 | THE CANADIAN LAKER
Ah...Paris in the spring. Who couldn’t fall in love with the Muskegon River in the springtime? “Fingerling” trout are more apt to survive if they are released into the wild when they are 5-6 inches long.

of fish pellets from one of the gumball machines installed on the shoreline. It’s kind of cool to watch trout that size actively feeding. Although fishing is not allowed, occasionally one of our big trout will escape the pond and float downstream into the Muskegon River. Once there, they’re fair game.”

Inside the headquarters, which aren’t necessarily open to the public, it's a lot like taking a trip down memory lane. It has the vibe and feel of an old ranger’s station. Wood floors creak and groan with every step. Walls are covered in wood paneling that have gamebirds printed on them. Mounted bobcats and an owl stare back at you as if they’re keeping an eye on the place. The owl was found dead in one of the fish-rearing raceways.

As for financial matters, voters rejected a millage increase to fund the projects through higher taxes. That veto by the voters hasn’t stopped Abel from trying a different tact to get his hands on the monies needed to complete the mission. The American Rescue Plan authorized $1.9 trillion in spending, of which Abel hopes to secure a $1million grant.

Abel notes that the park has historical value. “It used to be a rest stop before the days of interstate highways,” he said. “Folks from Grand Rapids would stop here on their way to and from Traverse City. It was, and still is, a nice spot for a picnic.”

Historically speaking, it is hard to imagine what life would have been like in 1881 when the hatchery first opened. Although the trout raised in the hatchery were delivered to area streams by railcar, the automobile was still many years away from widespread use. In January of 1881, Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison formed the Oriental Telephone Company. Billy the Kid escaped from jail and was eventually killed outside Fort Sumner, located in New Mexico. The American Red Cross was formed in Washington D.C. President James Garfield was assassinated and Chester A. Arthur was sworn in as the 21st president of the United States. In California, the first edition of the Los Angeles Times was published.

Abel supplied most of the historical photos for this story. One of the photos was from 1932, which was a memorable year as well in American history. Unemployment reached 24%, Amelia

Earhart completed the first non-stop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean, Charles Lindbergh’s son was kidnapped, Lake Placid hosted the winter Olympics, and Franklin Roosevelt defeated Herbert Hoover 472 electoral votes to 59.

Today, Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologist Mark Tonello says that the Muskegon River near Paris is open to fishing all year long. Rainbows and brown trout have to be ten inches long in order to keep. There are no restrictions as to what anglers can use for bait. Spinners, nightcrawlers, spoons, flies are popular choices for anglers.

The DNR releases brown and rainbow trout into the Little Muskegon River, on the east side of Canadian Lakes. Although

there’s no way to tell if the fish planted there are descendants of the first hatchery plants in 1881, it is entirely possible.

With the spring weather finally here, I’m looking forward to spending some time in Paris this spring. Of course, I’ll pack a lunch, the bike, a fly rod, a kayak, a quarter for the fish-food machine, and, naturally, a sense of adventure. After a long Michigan winter, it’s always my objective to squeeze many outdoor activities into one day.

Family Car ALL IN THE

SOMETIMES YOU JUST can’t get a melody out of your head and when I sat down at Marshall Henry’s kitchen table for this feature article interview, such was the case. I just couldn’t escape the image of Archie and Edith Bunker singing at the piano during the All in the Family credits. My mind made the connection to that iconic television series and I instantly rewrote the lyrics.

“Boy, the way the cars were made Chrome that shined in sun or shade”

It all started because Marshall had prepared well for my arrival. This current president of the Canadian Lakes Cruisers Car Club had carefully adorned

the table with a vast assortment of fascinating pictures, posters, and vehicle paraphernalia. I could tell that Marshall was formerly the type of teacher who must have come well-prepared to conferences to discuss each child’s achievements. From the spread before me, it was also obvious to me that not only had Marshall been the car club’s president for the past fourteen years, he was also a proud family man.

“This car has been in the family for fifty-four years, longer than most marriages,” said Marshall.

I knew right then that this was no ordinary car we were going to be discussing. This vehicle was considered part of the family.

“Boy, the way Glenn Miller played Songs that made the hit parade Guys like me we had it made Those were the days”
Marshall Henry & son, Erin in 2021.

“Cars like that we’d never trade Those were the cars”

“Most married couples buy a car like this, drive it a few years and then they have kids and the car goes bye-bye. It was sheer luck that we never traded it.”

I learned that most classic car owners are not the original owners. They acquire their vehicles later in the car’s life and frequently trade it. Such was not the case with the Henrys. Marshall and his wife, Melanie, ordered their 1969 SS 396 Chevelle in January of 1969 and it was delivered in March. It came from Mark Chevrolet in Wayne, Michigan and had a price tag of $3,358. As a matter of fact, they made the down payment on that car one week and closed on their first house the following

week. Garden City would become the first home for Marshall, Melanie, and what was later named, The Green Machine.

“You could say it (the Chevelle) was definitely a member of the family, that’s for sure.”

Like a proud father showing report cards, Marshall proceeded to produce a title and other documentation verifying and describing his vehicle. And much like he was exhibiting a pair of bronzed baby shoes, Marshall presented the original set of keys and key fob. Never mind the fact that he had just explained that the Chevelle still possessed its original chrome, wheels, interior, emblems, and yes, even its original spare tire. I also learned that it has also always remained painted the same color: green.

“No need for CO2 mandates

As we travelled state to state Gee our old Chevelle ran great Those were the cars”

Marshall originally used the Chevelle for transportation to and from work to Garden City West High School where he was employed as a teacher and coach. That first summer when The Green Machine became a member of the family, he and Melanie drove to the Upper Peninsula for a two-week camping trip with all of their supplies and a tent in the car’s trunk and backseat. The following year, in April of 1970, they drove the Chevelle to the Dapper Dan Basketball Tournament in Pittsburg to watch a Garden City West High School student play in the All Star Game.

34 | THE CANADIAN LAKER

The couple continued their travels with the car later that summer of 1970 with a month-long camping trip out west to the Pacific coast. The Green Machine demonstrated its capabilities by pulling a pop-up travel trailer and Suzuki motorcycle on the back bumper. Marshall recalls having to replace a tire in South Dakota while on that trip. During his 1971 spring break, Marshall, Melanie, and The Green Machine travelled once again. This time they drove to Washington, D.C. where the Chevelle had a restful stay in a parking structure while they toured the nation’s capital by bus, subway, and on foot.

“And you knew each car back then Grills were grills and fins were fins Mister we would love to race our cars on drag ways again”

The summer of 1969 Marshall started taking the Chevelle drag racing and the rest, as they say, is history. If you’re like me and have to look up the definition of a drag race, I will save you the trouble. While the definition of drag can mean to dawdle, lag, or creep, drag racing is anything but that. A drag race is an acceleration contest from a standing start between two vehicles over a measured distance. In Marshall’s case, he was able to achieve speeds between 95 and 112 mph. “That was back when you could identify each car on the track. You knew them all,” said Marshall.

Marshall took his car to Windsor Dragway where he took racing classes and learned more about the sport. He raced The Green Machine until the late 1990s. “When I raced, the car was flattowed and attached to the back bumper

of one of my other cars. You didn’t drive on the highways with cars like this.”

“Drivers seemed to be content Switching gears where ere they went”

Another warm smile appeared as Marshall recounted a story that took place in August of 1972. He drove Melanie in the Chevelle to Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn when she went into labor for their first son. Jason was born that same day and came home with Melanie a few days later. And yes, that was Jason’s first ride in The Green Machine. Three years later their second son, Erin, was born and the family shares many fond memories of riding in the car. “When we raced it through the years it was a whole family affair, complete with a picnic lunch, Melanie, and the boys,” said Marshall.

CANADIANLAKES.ORG | 35
Close-up

The Green Machine was the family car from 1969 until 1978 when he started parking it in the garage during the winters. After that, Marshall said it became a cruiser and part-time drag racing car. In addition to assisting in the car’s maintenance and storage, sons Jason and Erin have not only driven it, they’ve also joined in the fun at car shows and parades.

“Gas was low each time we spent Those were the cars”

“Even though gas was a lot cheaper back then, you didn’t drive a car like this on the highway. It had a race motor that took premium racing gas and only achieved 4 to 6 miles per gallon,” Marshall explained. “Our boys always loved this car. They’re both good mechanics and have helped to restore The Green Machine as well as store it,” Marshall said.

In 2001 Melanie and Marshall moved into their first home in Canadian Lakes, so they had an addition put on the garage in order to house the Chevelle. Their other cars were in an adjacent car port, so you know who received top priority in their home.

“Take a little Sunday spin Go and watch the Lions win Mister we could reminisce about the places we’ve been”

Along with all of the other activities with the Canadian Lakes Cruisers Car Club, Marshall has taken The Green Machine to several car shows and parades in the area through the years, most of them accompanied by his wife, sons, and their families. Yes, it

should come as no surprise that a third generation of Henrys has enthusiastically shown an interest in the Chevelle. All three grandsons Cole (14 yrs.), Luke (17 yrs.), and Jake (20 yrs.) have joined in the fun. Cole is still waiting for his chance to sit behind the wheel.

Once they moved into their present home in Canadian Lakes and no longer had the storage space, the Chevelle spent several years downstate alternating in either of his sons’ pole barns. “Don’t sell that car, Dad!” became the cry from his sons Jason and Erin. It was hardly put out to pasture as each of the sons worked to restore and maintain it.

Since July of 2021 The Green Machine has resided in a pole barn in the Canadian Lakes area along with a 1952 Chevy Resto-Mod of Marshall’s, both of which have appeared in area car shows.

Through the years he has also owned and traded a 1953 Oldsmobile 88, a 1962 Chevy II, and a 1963 Impala Resto-Mod. “I guess you could say that I’m still adding to the family,” Marshall chuckled. But deep down you know he feels that nothing compares to his 1969 Chevelle SS 396 4-speed sport coupe.

“Skirts were short and hair was long We sang to ev’ry Beatles’ song Left phones home as we drove along Those were the cars”

Joyce's Choices

THE NOVELTY OF IT ALL

Spring is in the air. Most of the snowbirds have returned. But some of you may still want to travel, so I’m offering you the chance to escape in a novel way. You may start your getaway in a southern California science lab and also tour a television studio while you’re there, all courtesy of Bonnie Garmus. Your next travel guide will be Pam Jenoff, taking you across the pond to London and eventually, Paris. In the turn of a few pages you’ll be whisked away to Chicago where Judith McNaught will narrate your adventure. From there it will be your shortest and most magical leap to Sugarberry Cove, Alabama with Heather

Webber. And lastly you’ll discover yourself on a road trip across country back to California, first by bus and then by a red 1939 Delahaye convertible, with the incredible David Baldacci as your guide. So sit back and enjoy because I’ve already booked your trips!

Lessons in Chemistry

Had my high school chemistry teacher, Mr. B, been one milliliter as humorous or relatable as chemist Elizabeth Zott in Lessons in Chemistry, I may just have taken an interest and enrolled in another class or two. I mean by definition,

38 | THE CANADIAN LAKER

chemistry shouldn’t necessarily be dry, should it? While Mr. B’s delivery and content were a bit parched, Zott gushes with wit, wisdom, and unwavering women of awareness on the cusp of the women’s movement of the 1960s.

Bonnie Garmus is a genius for creating a love story about two brilliant, enthusiastic (nerdy?) scientists who discover that they not only bond in their California science lab, but they have true chemistry. It is the 1960s, however, and as inequality in the workplace abounds, Elizabeth Zott is confronted with unrelenting professional obstacles and no recognition of her research or abilities. Flash forward and a few years later she is faced with being a single mother trying to raise her young daughter. Zott reluctantly accepts employment as the afternoon host of America’s most beloved cooking show and uses the opportunity to encourage women to try to change the status quo. She also reinvents cooking for her audience as she presents her countertop as a chemistry lab and encourages viewers to experiment in the kitchen.

Humor overflows, characters are quirky, situations are impossibly believable, and women are recognized and valued. There’s even a brilliant dog with an omniscient voice laced throughout the chapters. What more could a reader hope to find in a humorous historical fiction novel? If chemistry is defined as “the study of transformation of matter” then Lessons in Chemistry should be defined as “the witty study of transformations which matter to women.”

The Lost Girls of Paris

Even though it’s been seventy-eight years since we first celebrated V-E Day, it’s difficult to dispute the immense impact that World War II continues to have in shaping our lives. It’s also equally

difficult to believe that any writer could unravel and reveal yet another WWII story as compelling as The Lost Girls of Paris. But historical fiction author Pam Jenoff certainly has done just that. Combining her previous experiences of working at the Pentagon with her years of serving as a diplomat for the State Department, Jenoff is able to shed a new light on the shadows of espionage. Due to her extraordinary writing talent, she also has an ability to breathe life into her characters as well as into moments in history previously undisclosed.

With alternating chapters spanning from 1943 to 1946, and personal and professional lives evolving within New York City to London and Paris, readers find themselves searching for answers for The Lost Girls of Paris. The mystery begins to unravel in 1946 as a legal aide named Grace discovers a mysterious abandoned suitcase in New York City’s Grand Central Terminal. It contains 12 photographs and she investigates to discover the significance and origin of the photos. The action soon shifts to 1943 London where Eleanor, a secretary/advisor to the Director of Special Operations Executive, has just been tasked with heading and training a newly formed network of female secret agents. The third voice in the novel begins in 1944 and belongs to Marie, a single parent with special skills who is recruited by Eleanor to join her elite force. Jenoff’s remarkably readable tale of courage, commitment, and camaraderie discloses the connection between these three courageous women and their extraordinary team.

Every Breath You Take by Judith McNaught

Some might consider Every Breath You Take a suspenseful romance novel while others might think of it as a romantic suspense novel. I enjoyed it as a wellwritten, perfectly paced, tome of tension,

laced with love and sprinkled with sizzle. In other words Judith McNaught, aka the “Queen of Hearts,” has once again delivered an enthralling book for her readers, and managed to capture their hearts while capturing the bad guys.

In the middle of a search for his missing grandson, an elderly philanthropist, Cecil Wyatt, throws his own must-attend lavish eightieth birthday party at his Chicago mansion and invites all of the local members of society. The party takes place as foul play is suspected in grandson William’s recent disappearance while family, friends, police, and media are on high alert. Naturally an unexpected suspect emerges. William’s virtually unknown and distant half-brother, Mitchell Wyatt, surfaces to further complicate the story. Over time patriarch Cecil’s family, friends, and attorneys find themselves knowingly and unknowingly involved while relationships and affairs falter or flourish. Love is in the air, but unfortunately, so is a killer. McNaught masterfully takes the reader down several possible pathways before revealing her conclusion. Well played hand, Queen of Hearts, well played.

The Lights of Sugarberry Cove

Mystical, magical, and whimsical is what Heather Webber does best and this tale also comes wrapped in the arms of family and embellished with scrumptious Southern culinary creations. The story is steeped in traditions, bubbling with nostalgia, and laced with love; all of which make for an interesting read. Did I mention that there’s a mysterious drowning, a bedand-breakfast in dire need of some tender loving care, and a marriage teetering on

CANADIANLAKES.ORG | 39

the brink? From mac and cheese to a family-famous chili to snickerdoodles-todie-for, I think you’ll develop a taste for The Lights of Sugarberry Cove.

Sadie Way Scott is urgently summoned back home to Sugarberry Cove, Alabama by her sister Leala Clare when their mother suffers a heart attack. Sadie has been away for eight years working as a host of a well-loved cooking show after her near-drowning accident in the lake near her mother’s bed-and-breakfast. Both sisters harbor questions and guilt regarding the accident and have a strained relationship as a result. They’re forced to attempt to run their mother’s business and assist in her recovery, all the while struggling with their pasts, their present relationships, and discovering how to heal. It sounds like a little lake magic is needed and Heather Webber provides the imaginative touches to do just that.

A Gambling Man

Whether you’re looking for a captivating and suspenseful read or a book with fascinating characters and authentic dialogue, you need look no further than

a David Baldacci novel. This talented writer has written sixty novels and while I haven’t read them all, I managed to start with his first one, Absolute Power, back in 1996 and have been hooked ever since. True to form, each page of A Gambling Man, published in 2021, screams riveting, rewarding, and well-researched. Baldacci manages to bring to life Reno, Nevada and Hollywood, California in the late 1940s with each sentence uttered by his characters and every scene chronicled in his narrative. Except for knowing that the book eventually had to end, I looked forward to turning every page as I was transported back in time.

On page one Aloysius Archer begins his fateful cross-country bus trip to California five years after serving in WWII and having also been recently released from serving time in prison. Archer claims he was wrongly convicted

of a crime he didn’t commit. Virtually penniless, he plans to start his life over by learning the ropes of becoming a gumshoe. He contacts Willie Dash, a seasoned FBI agent, now a California private eye, to start his life over. Of course the bus trip waylays his plans with a stop in Reno where he meets a troubled older man requiring his help, an aspiring young actress wanting to seek her fame in Hollywood, and a roulette wheel calling his name.

Archer manages to win the 1940s equivalent of $50,000 in today’s dollars, buys a luxurious car and starts his new journey to California with the starletwant-to-be. He finds himself mixed up with the mob, entrenched in a political scandal, and infiltrating every den of darkness and corner of corruption in an attempt to solve crimes as the bodies pile up. With crisply written short chapters, action that never ceases, and dialogue-todie-for, A Gambling Man is a good bet.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the novelty of it all.

GOODBYE SPRING, HELLO SUMMER!

As we welcome the sun and warmer temperatures our population once again begins to swell, and thoughts turn to boating, beaches, and BBQ. I thought I would take the time to speak about some summertime issues that pop up from time to time.

DRIVING IN THE COMMUNITY

The Speed Limit within Canadian Lakes is 25 mph unless otherwise posted, such as the Campground and Sunset Shores where it is 15 mph. We need to remember that our community is full of both the young and the old, this necessitates the monitoring of the speed in our community. This spring and summer your safety team will be deploying our electronic Speed Sign to help with this issue. As we can better identify the problem areas in the community, it will allow your safety team to put in place possible solutions. However, the speed sign is not the only solution to the problem. We as members can make sure that we are following all traffic safety laws while driving on our roads.

WALKERS/RUNNERS IN THE COMMUNITY

For those that love nothing more than a nice walk or run on a warm spring/ summer day/evening please remember that we share these roads with cars, trucks, motorcycles, ORV’s and bicycles. When walking or running on the roads in the community please remember these safety tips:

1. Walk facing traffic, this means that a car should never approach you from behind on the same side of the road as you.

2. Walk on the road in a single file, this is especially important on roads with hills and curves as these often act as blind spots, limiting the time drivers have to react.

3. Be visible. If you must walk or run in low visibility times such as sunrise or sunset wear bright clothing, wear something reflective, and/or carry a flashlight to make yourself more visible to drivers.

4. Keep the volume down on music, hang up the phone, and don’t get distracted by playing games. Turning the volume down on your headphones allows you to hear approaching vehicles or bikers approaching from behind. Talking on the phone and playing games while walking creates a distraction that prevents you from being aware of your environment.

5. Keep your dog on a short leash. If you are walking your dog on the roads in the community you should not be using a retractable leash. The amount of time that it takes to retrieve a dog to your side on a retractable leash could allow for devastating consequences.

DOG LAWS

Many of us are dog owners and there is nothing better in the summertime than strolling along the street on a warm summer day with your dog. Here in Canadian Lakes, we have simplified things by adopting the Michigan Leash Law. All dogs 6 months and older must be licensed in the county in which the owner resides; the owner must be able to show proof of the license when asked by a person authorized to enforce this. All dogs when off the owner’s property

42 | THE CANADIAN LAKER
Kristin Wilcox Safety Director kwilcox@clpoc.org

must be on a 6-foot leash, and when on the property must be always under the control of the owner. When walking your dog in Canadian Lakes it is required that all waste be bagged and properly disposed of. Just a friendly reminder dogs are ONLY allowed on the beach areas outside of the swim area (outside of the buoyed area) on beaches in Canadian Lakes unless otherwise posted. If your dog

becomes separated from you and you need assistance locating it, please contact your Safety Team as we now have two kennels to house any lost pets. If you find a lost dog and would like assistance in finding the owner, please contact your Safety Team.

BOATER SAFETY

With the boating season ramping up, I want to mention that anyone born after

1978 planning on driving a boat on any Canadian Lake this summer is required to complete a boater safety course. Any person born after June 30, 1996, is required by law to carry their boater safety card with them when operating a motorized watercraft. Thanks to advances in technology, it is even easier to obtain your boater safety card. You no longer must attend a class in person, although many communities still offer them. Here in Michigan, you can find an online version by going to boat-ed.com. A copy of the boaters Handbook is available to download for free online through Michigan DNR at www.michigan.gov/dnr/ things-to-do/boating/rules-and-regs.

As always, we on the safety team want to thank the wonderful volunteers of the Mobile Watch. Without your dedication our job would be much more difficult.

Your safety in the community is our top priority!

CLPOC STICKERS

With the coming of spring, please remember to affix your 2023 CLPOC stickers to your vehicle(s), membership cards, permanent guest passes (if you have them) and your boats, kayaks, etc. If you haven’t already received or picked them up and replaced last year’s sticker, be sure to do so soon.

WINTER WATCH REPORT

It was another busy Winter Watch (red light) season for your Mobile Watch (MW) and Canadian Lakes Safety. As usual, Mobile Watch volunteers in all nine areas reported numerous red lights to Canadian Lakes Safety.

The Mobile Watch and Canadian Lakes Safety watch over all the homes in Canadian Lakes. Over the years, the actions taken by Mobile Watch and Safety have undoubtedly saved residents thousands of dollars in damaged property. The “Resident Vacation” form is available at the CLPOC Office and on our members website.

WHAT WILL IT TAKE?

We all have seen it - SPEEDING.

Speeding is a problem in Canadian Lakes. We can blame contractors for some of the violations, but we should face facts – WE are all part of the problem. We hope that it will not take the death or serious injury of a playing child, a walker, jogger, or a bicyclist to get us to slow down.

Canadian Lakes Safety has tried to raise our awareness by using the roadside speed monitor and by installing the dreaded portable speed bump devices. Usually, driving behavior changes - but only briefly. Then speeds go back up.

Rest assured that Mobile Watch volunteers will do their part by reporting speed violators to Safety. Can we count on you to watch your speed while driving? Think of your children or grandchildren out playing in our beautiful community as you are driving, and please obey the 25mph limit. The time saved between 25mph and 45mph when driving 5 miles is only seconds. Consider the time and anguish should something tragic occur because of your speeding.

SLOW DOWN! We want to make sure that everyone has a fun and SAFE summer.

IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING

Whether it is summer or winter, Mobile Watch and Canadian Lakes Safety are always watching out for the safety and security of our common and private properties. Since we are not a gated community, our assets are limited as to where we can be at any given time. That is where you come in.

If you see something, say something. Report suspicious individuals and vehicles immediately. Call Canadian Lakes Safety at 231-972-8555, or if it is an emergency, call the Sheriff ’s Department at 911 or (231) 796-4811. Timely notification is crucial.

NEED VISIBLE HOUSE

Every second counts during an emergency, and valuable time can be lost if a house number is not clearly posted where emergency responders can see it. Firefighters, EMS responders, and police

officers cannot provide timely emergency services to you or your family if they cannot find your house. Look at your house number. Can you easily see your house number from the street, especially in the dark? If it’s not easy to see for you, it’s not easy for first responders either.

From the time 911 is called, the tragedy clock begins to tick. The faster that emergency services can locate your home the better the outcome will be for your property and/or loved ones.

Take the time now to get a white-ongreen reflective sign in front of your house. Assistance is available if you need help to install the sign. Mobile Watch also uses the reflective house sign to report suspicious activities and red lights on at your house. Signs and posts are low-cost items, but they pay high dividends. Reflective house number signs and posts are available for less than $20 at our Ace Hardware and most home improvement stores, or through the Morton Township on their website at mortontownship.org/wpcontent/uploads/2019/02/911_SIGN.pdf.

Be smart and be safe. Install a reflective house number sign in front of your home! For those who already have reflective house number signs in place, we say THANK YOU, but please check to make sure the installed signs are high enough so that plowed snow will not cover it, i.e., at least as high as your mailbox. If the sign isn’t visible, it doesn’t help.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE

Canadian Lakes Mobile Watch would like to thank all those dedicated volunteers who donate their time, vehicle, and gas to help keep Canadian Lakes safe. Many go above and beyond and also volunteer to help with traffic and parking control at various Canadian Lakes events throughout the year.

Did you know that some of our volunteers have been doing patrols for over a decade? There are over 50 patrollers who are members of our prestigious Decade Club. This is a true commitment and dedication to community service!

HELP US HELP YOU!

One of the Mobile Watch goals is to perform at least two patrols each day in

each of the nine areas within Canadian Lakes. This involves some 6,570 patrols each year to help keep Canadian Lakes safe and provide assistance when needed. While we have been successful in attracting some new MW members, WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP.

For those returning from their winter retreats, now is the time to step up and show your appreciation to the Mobile Watch by joining. Gaps remain in the coverage in many patrol areas. Even if you

cannot serve on a full-time basis, Mobile Watch could use your assistance as a part time or substitute patroller.

If you can help for even some months of the year to ensure Canadian Lakes remains safe, please contact Roger Stobert at 231-288-0148 (spankky@charter.net) or Canadian Lakes Safety at 231-972-8555.

Canadian Lakes Yard Waste Information

Canadian Lakes Yard Waste will be open Sunday, April 2, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and will be OPEN every Wednesday and Sunday, 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., April through November 29. 2023, except on April 9, 2023, for Easter Sunday.

As open burning of yard wastes is not allowed in Canadian Lakes, and to preclude the dumping of these wastes on neighboring lots and common areas, Canadian Lakes Yard Waste was established to provide CLPOC members in good standing with a place to dispose of their residential yard waste.

The Canadian Lakes Yard Waste site is located on the south side of Pierce Road between 110th Ave. and Tullymore Dr. To gain access you will need a 2023 CLPOC ID, vehicle sticker, or guest pass.

Items allowed to be brought to the Yard Waste Site include tree and shrub branches and limbs less than 4” in diameter, and plant-based materials normally associated with residential yard maintenance such as grass clippings, leaves, and discarded mulch and plants.

The following items are NOT allowed to be left at the Yard Waste Site: Garbage, including food scraps such as rinds, peels, cores, etc., fireplace or campfire ashes, and yard waste containers or plastic bags.

When depositing your landscape wastes, please place them as far off the road and on top of or behind previously dumped wastes. This helps to minimize the high cost of pushbacks.

The friendly attendants are all volunteers and are more than happy to answer any questions you may have. If your vehicle sticker is easily visible, they will give you a friendly wave when you enter but will stop you if they don’t see the sticker on your vehicle or it is not current.

For the safety of other depositors and the attendants, please drive slowly (<5mph) when entering, exiting, and while at the Canadian Lakes Yard Waste. This also minimizes road dust.

Should you have any questions related to the Canadian Lakes Yard Waste service prior to your visit or should you want to volunteer to help at the site, please contact Roger Stobert, Canadian Lakes Yard Waste Coordinator, at 231-288-0148 or spankky@charter.net.
