According to the United Nations Ad Hoc Interagency Coordinating Group on Antimicrobial Resistance, 700,000 people die from diseases related to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) every year, of which 230,000 are killed by multi-resistant tuberculosis. By 2050, more than 10 million people will have perished from these types of illnesses, posing a serious threat to the global economy. Just as experts from around the world strive to tackle the issue, the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences (JCC) initiated AMR research projects on local pig farms, poultry farms and fish farms in 2019, with three grants totalling HK$35-million provided by the Sustainable Agricultural and Fisheries Development Fund managed by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conversation Department. The projects aim to enhance industry sustainability by improving its operation and reducing antibiotic use.
