Only the Words Themselves Mean What They Say for soprano and flute

means most of the anger meant by such a person, for if he meant all the anger he would also mean what the words themselves say,

Help, Head. Help Heart.

that you should not come back, ever. But, being angry, if he were merely to say, “I’m very angry at you,” you would not be as hurt as you are, or you would not be hurt at all, even though the degree of anger, if it could be measured, might be exactly the same. Or perhaps the degree of anger could not be the same. Or perhaps it could be the same but the anger would have to be of a different kind, a kind that could be shared as a problem, whereas this kind can be told only in these words he does not mean. So it is not the anger in these words that hurts you, but the fact that he chooses to say words to you that mean you should never come back, even though he does not mean what the words say, even though only the words themselves mean what they say.

Mvt. II

Soprano Flute (C flute, bass flute, piccolo) Recommended page set-up for performance: five layers of (single-sided) pages on two or three stands. From top layer to bottom layer: pp. 1-3; pp. 4-6; pp.7-9; p.10; p.11-13.

Mvt. I Tempo markings and (especially) timings are somewhat relative, indicating the general speed of events, rate of speech, etc. The performers should establish their own rhythm using these temporal values as guidelines. When the soprano and flutist speak together they should do so as perfectly in unison (of time and inflection) as possibly. When the soprano mouths words that the flutist is saying, they must be exactly in sync so that an illusion of ventriloquism results. Soprano

– .˙.. æ

[fltz.]

œ

– “breath tremolo”: rapid continuous breath accents, somewhat similar to a Monteverdi trill.

Soprano Soprano should match the sound quality of the bass flute with an extremely breathy tone, except where indicated otherwise. Very frequent breaths may be necessary to achieve this effect. Little or no vibrato should be used in the “breathy” sections. Flute All pitches in this movement are harmonics/partials, with the fundamental either played at the start of the phrase or indicated in parentheses. This will result in an unstable, noisy sound, especially in the high partials. Pitch and tuning discrepancies as a result of naturally detuned pitches in the harmonic series are expected, and discrepancies in the notated rhythm due to the unreliability of producing specific harmonics at an exact time are also ok.

There should be an obvious rhetorical/affective distinction between the sections of spoken word (usually calm, matterof-fact) and those of sung or noisy gestures (demonstrative, melodramatic), even (especially!) when these occur in quick succession.

Mvt. III
