oes anybody remember the old Cheadle Hulme pub next to the train station? In February of this year it was renamed Platform 5 after a refurb which turned it into a modern pub/restaurant.
As soon as we entered the pub we offered the option of whether to dine in the restaurant are or in the relaxed lounge/ bar area. We opted for the restaurant.
When we arrived at Platform 5 we noticed more than quite a few internal and external differences from the pub of old. To say the pub has undertaken a makeover would be a huge understatement. The new look which we could only describe as modern and quirky with a touch of retro.
As we were taken to our table, we walked passed what can only be described as a dessert lovers dream! We then sat and began to look at the menu, we soon realised that picking one starter and one main course each was going to be some task with the menu being so extensive. The final decision was to share the ‘Banter Board’ to start, then we chose the Halloumi Kebab and the P5 Freight Train Burger for our main courses.
The P5 Freight Train certainly lived up to its name, inserted into a nice fresh, floured bun was a salad, a burger, cheese, bacon, a sausage meat patty and chicken topped with a BBQ sauce.
When the banter board arrived we couldn’t believe what had been placed on our table as a starter. The thing was enormous. Containing ribs, wings, sticky chicken, burger on a bun on a stick, smoked bockwurst, parma ham, chorizo and chips salted with a P5 salt accompanied by a P5 dip.
Put this with some chips and what more could you want? Well just incase you wanted more there is! A home made coleslaw and a pot of chilli creates an almost ‘Man vs Food’ type main course placed in front of you.
Every element of our starting platter had flavour in abundance, endearing aroma, presented well and great flavour, ticking off all of the boxes. After the delight of our starter we moved to our mains. The Halloumi kebab looked and tasted equally delightful. Served on a skewer with roasted peppers and onion, with a nice fresh bread served on a bed of salad, a side of coleslaw, chips and the P5 dip.
A great all round place to go for food, whether it be a special occasion, or just a treat, or even breakfast with Platform 5 opening at 7.30am. Definitely a must go to place. You will not be disappointed.

ucia Davies has been a Children's Entertainer working in the private sector for over 25 years on the Northwest Children's Party Circuit, her remarkable reputation as a Storyteller precedes her. Simon Cowell's right hand man are following the Pod Trail after hearing about the story through Social Media. or the first time in nearly 80 years Lancashire Bridge has been revealed. If you’ve not witnessed this landmark attraction yet, it’s definately worth a visit to see the historic bridge in Stockport town centre.

The Merseyway area also has other works taking place, including the new £45m Redrock retail and leisure scheme on the former Bridgefield Street car park in the town centre. The scheme includes a new 40,000 sq ft cinema, restaurant units and shops. Stockport already is a great place to live and work – over the next few years the town centre is set to undergo a complete make-over, making it even better, a town to really be proud of.

Walthew Warriors PROVE SIGHT LOSS IS NO LONGER BARRIER IN SPORT

wo members of the Walthew Warriors team have completed the first leg of their Swim and Cycle Challenge 2015 in support of Walthew House which is an independent charity based in Shaw Heath. Phil Allen, who is visually impaired and Ruth Hind, who acts as his sighted guide swimmer completed the two mile open water swim in Lake Windermere. Phil explains a bit about the challenge, “There are a few big differences between open water swimming and doing it in a pool. For a start, lakes are colder and deeper.
There is no possibility of taking a rest by putting your feet down or holding on to the side. In the absence of lane markings, it is tough swimming in the right direction and getting it wrong (even a bit) will make you swim further.” The next challenge is tandem riding coast to coast in a day in September, proving that sight loss needn’t be a barrier to taking part in sport. he Stockport Plaza brings us this years pantomime, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs! Hoping for the same success after last years box office record breaker, Cinderella, The Stockport Plaza manager, Ted Doan, has again recruited the expertise of David Vickers and Richard Chandler to entertain us all throughout the festive period. David and Richard bring with them an all star cast to guarantee that the story of Snow White and her band of Dwarfs, that we all know so well, is the tale told in the way it was meant to, but also to ensure laughter all round. Muddles, the Jester is played by the energetic Bradley Thompson, a young actor with plenty of experience in pantomime. The role of
a jester couldn’t be more suited to Bradley who bounces around the stage, with fun written across his face. Everybody would associate Snow White with somebody of immense beauty and glamour, and with recasting last years Cinderella, this is exactly what we have. Becky Bennett seems as though she could play Snow White in her sleep, which is a good job really considering the story line. To have any kind of production of Snow White, we all know that Snow must meet her Prince Charming, and Charming is what the crowd of the Plaza shall get. Bradley Clarkson is no stranger to the stage or the limelight, having been a finalist on ITV’s Grease Is The Word.
The two headline stars of the show are two very familiar faces, firstly we have Kim Hartman who portrayed Helga in the legendary sitcom, ‘Allo ‘Allo. Our Wicked Queen comes from one of the best sitcoms ever, so laughs a plenty are a certainty. In this years Panto, our Dame, Nurse Glucose, is played by the man everybody knows as Jimmy Corkhill from Brookside. Dean Sullivan is possibly the best Dame you will ever see!! alling all dog owners and their four-legged friends… St Ann’s Hospice has announced its latest fundraising event, and is calling on local dog owners to be a part of it. The big Halloween Paws Spooktacular is a very special dog walking event, which is
taking place on Saturday 31st October at the beautiful Heaton Park in Manchester. The event will open at 12noon with the dog walk starting at 2pm. It’s a sponsored dog walk to raise money for St Ann’s Hospice, so the team is asking that dogs raise as much as they can in sponsorship. The 5km route is suitable for dogs and owners of all ages, shapes and sizes, and there will be lots of activities, stalls

ange Rover Sports are a common sight on Cheshire’s roads but this version is a little different. This is the Range Rover Sport Hybrid is powered by 3.0-litre SDV6 diesel engine producing 340bhp when combined with an electric motor. Electric motor? I hear you. Yes, this hybrid version of the Sport has an improved fuel economy – up from 38.7mpg in the ordinary diesel unit to 44.1mpg, in the hybrid while emissions are as low as 169g/km of CO2. Now if you venture to London for business, then you’ll pleased to know that you can enter the Congestion Charging Zone for free thanks to the hybrid technology under the bonnet. If you don’t, well at least it’s a tad more friendly to Cheshire’s green countryside. Jump in, the first thing that hits you is that the cabin is a classy place to spend
time in. it oozes quality. The fixtures and fittings are all made of quality materials and there are tons of gizmos to keep you entertained. The interior is much better than what is offered in the Porsche cayenne or even the BMW X5. Land Rover has jazzed up the exterior of the car with diamond-turned 21in alloy wheels and Aleutian silver paint plus a panoramic sunroof for 2015. There are one or two options on our test car. Highlights included an on-board telly, rear seat entertainment, a surround camera system, wade sensing plus blind spot monitor and park assist. Another upside is the offroading ability. Land Rover’s Terrain Response system is a work of art, whether its mud and ruts, snow, grass or normal roads it has a setting for everything. Even this hybrid version can cope with the rough stuff. The battery system is protected by a
boron steel bash plate so if you feel the urge to traverse rocky ground or cross a few river-beds then you can do so. On the road the Range Rover Sport Hybrid feels remarkably agile for a car of this size. Starting up and creeping off in silence is quite amusing given that there is a 3.0-litre V6 under the bonnet waiting to kick in to life. The electric range only lasts for around a mile but it is great for not waking the neighbours whether its early in the morning or late at night. lmost a thousand people braved the weather on Sunday 26 July to enjoy the Chadkirk Festival, which is now in its 19th year. Despite the weather, visitors brought their own sunshine and enjoyed a fun packed programme of entertainment including live music and performances, martial arts displays, dancers, wildlife, including ferret racing, and donkeys from a nearby sanctuary. In the chapel, visitors experienced hand ring bells and the traditional sounds of the silver band outside the chapel. The festival, opened by the Worshipful the Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Andrew Verdeille, was organised by Stockport Council and

supported by the dedicated Friends of Chadkirk. There were more than 30 craft and information stalls selling a selection of hand-crafted items, from wood turned goods and talented textile artists, to scrumptious cakes and organically grown fruit and vegetables. The Friends of Chadkirk delighted visitors with their mouth-watering scones with strawberries and cream for sale. Chadkirk is also one of only a handful of festivals which celebrates the ancient tradition of Well Dressing. This year’s beautiful well dressing design, created to express ‘Peace’, took a week to create by a team of well dressing volunteers.

The Christian charity offers a large selection of secondhand furniture, household goods and computers at knockdown prices from its Meadow Mill address, on Water Street, Stockport. All the goods are refurbished items, or good as new, donated to the charity by members of the public. Renewal North West was started almost ten years ago as a computer renovation operation, in the roof-space of a church building. Then, after an initial move, it relocated to its current venue, selling second-hand white goods - fridges, freezers, washing machines - household goods, laptops, and renovating used furniture. The charity grew with the aim of helping long-term unemployed people break svponline.co.uk
down the barriers that prevent them from working, and provide furniture and household items to those struggling to set up home on a limited budget. It operates a community computers scheme that makes laptops and PCs available more cheaply to those on benefits. “We are supported by the Christian Church, at Brownwood Hall, Wythenshawe,” says technical manager Chris Bennett. Members of the church sit as trustees on the charity’s board. As well as the household goods, Renewal operates The Rinascente Gallery, a large showroom filled to the brim with vintage, hand-painted and industrial furniture. “It has opened up a different market,” says Chris. “It is aimed at people with more money to spend on something that’s unique.” The charity has been particularly successful in offering a line of bespoke
industrial tables”, says Chris. “And we have recently started getting into the gardening side of things,” says Chris. Customers can now order landscaping requirements from the charity. It operates an online shop, where customers can browse through the goods and order online. The Renewal operation is run by Wes Downs, general manager and trustee, along with a management team. Sometimes as many as 14 additional workers, who include volunteers and those on work placements, work on site. The store is open to the public and no referral is needed. CHEESECAKE
Ingredients
• 150 g digestive biscuits, crushed • 45 g butter, melted • 110 g caster sugar • 120 ml whipping cream • 150 g dark chocolate, melted and cooled • 2 tbsp cocoa powder • 200 g cream cheese
Method
1. Mix the biscuits with the butter and 1 tablespoon of the sugar. Press into a 18cm springform cake tin and refrigerate. 2. Whip the cream until soft peaks form. Add the cooled melted chocolate, then the cocoa powder mix. Blend well and set aside. 3. Beat the cream cheese and remaining sugar together. Fold into the cream chocolate mixture and mix thoroughly to ensure all of the ingredients are fully incorporated. 4. Spread the mixture on top of the crushed biscuits. Refrigerate for at least an hour to set, then serve.

s r e t s i S e e r TS he Th ocial Landlord Stockport Homes has partnered with leading WiFi and Digital Inclusion Solutions provider CommunityUK.net to launch ‘WiFi@3S’, a free pilot WiFi broadband service for the residents of Brecon, Conway and Ludlow Towers in Brinnington, Stockport.
The service will provide tenants of the “Three Sisters” with a completely FREE 4mb service, along with a range of low cost increased speed services for those who want them. As connection to this state of the art service does not require a landline, mobile phone or any other form of contract, Stockport Homes is looking to encourage and facilitate the digital connectivity of its residents in an area where the uptake of digital technology has been particularly low to-date. Stockport Homes will also be working closely with CommunityUK and local social enterprise Startpoint Woodley on the delivery of a comprehensive digital inclusion program that will ensure tenants have easy access to all the

training and support they need to make the most of the digital services on offer.
A converted flat in Brecon Towers, the ‘SK1pad’ will serve as a Digital Training Hub for tenants looking to develop and improve their digital skills, and there will also be access to a range of low cost computer equipment for tenants who need it. Roger Philips, Chair of the Board at Stockport Homes’ said: “This pilot project is a radical new step in our efforts to include more of our customers in the digital revolution, and make sure everyone has the opportunity to get online. The lessons we learn from this pilot will be used to develop digital schemes for many more residents in the borough.”
Peter Reed-Forrester, Managing Director of CommunityUK went onto say: “By providing Stockport Homes’ residents with an affordable internet connection and the support needed to connect with the digital world, we are not only helping to improve their standard of living but also providing the opportunity for them to improve how they live, work and learn. Finding work, managing finances and benefits, learning new skills and communicating with friends and family are all important activities that have moved predominantly on-line in today’s society. We aim to ensure that everyone has access to them, regardless of location or financial status.”
The official launch date for the service was 29th July, celebrated in true community fashion, with an afternoon event running from 2.30-6.00pm that provided residents with advice and guidance on how to connect to and use the service, details of the services at the SK1Pad along with refreshments, and children’s activities throughout the afternoon. When registering for the service, residents will be automatically entered into a prize draw offering them the chance to win many amazing prizes, including three lucky residents who will win a FREE year’s supply of upgraded high speed internet service worth over £190.00, and three residents who will win a tablet computer worth £90.00!

FCA appeals for new carers in Stockport to find room to foster
O
ne of the leading independent fostering agencies has launched a new recruitment campaign to address the shortage of foster carers in Stockport and across the North West. Called ‘Finding Room to Foster’ the campaign draws on the moments when carers from Foster Care Associates (FCA) in the region found that unique time in their life to make the important decision to foster – making room both emotionally and physically in their home. FCA, which has a regional office in Middleton, has many carers in the region who have made room in their lives, including Dan and Christina Duxbury who begun fostering with FCA when Dan’s army career brought him back to a UK-based recruitment role. Commenting Dan said: “During my time as an army medic I was taken to some harrowing places and an operational tour
to Rwanda in 1994 was particularly challenging. That experience made me promise myself that I would try to help anyone who couldn’t help themselves. That was the starting point I suppose and from then fostering was always something Christina and I were going to do. “We’ve been fostering with FCA since 2006 and have fostered 19 children, ranging from a day-old baby to older teenagers and very quickly they become part of our family unit. The training from FCA has been really helpful and because of my background as a trainer in the army I’ve even had the opportunity to deliver training to other carers. I’m now training to be a social worker thanks to the invaluable experience I’ve gained through being a foster carer.” Debbie Smith, operations manager for FCA North West, said: “We’ve been working with children and young people for 21 years and our experience shows that one-to-one support
in a family setting is the best way to help these children achieve stability and positive outcomes. Our team of social care professionals work closely with our foster carers to deliver intensive, holistic support tailored to the individual needs of each young person and carer.” “We have the best foster carers in the North West, and hope our ‘Finding Room to Foster’ campaign will encourage more people in the region to make room in their life and seriously consider becoming a foster carer.” FCA provides ongoing comprehensive support to all foster carers including training, a generous financial allowance, access to carer support groups and organised family activities – all contributing factors as to why FCA placements are 22% more stable than the national average.
