Prepare to face your enemy... Turn your back on dry, dull hair. As seasons change it’s time to rethink your hair regime. It’s not just your skin that comes under winter attack, your hair needs love too! Colds, flu and the stresses of Christmas can affect your health and believe it or not, illness and stress are the most common cause of poor hair growth and condition. Turn your back on dry, dull hair and step into Spring with shiny smooth healthy looking hair. A great starting point would be to try Soap Hairdressings ultimate stress busting treatment that will re-condition and re-hydrate your hair, it only takes 15 minutes and can easily be added on to whichever service you are having. You can hardly have missed the latest trend of applying oil to your hair to help improve its condition. We can highly recommend ‘Orofluido Oil’ with its delicious developing amber fragrance and vanilla foundation. Its lightweight formula recovers and boosts the hair, absorbing instantly without being greasy or weighing the hair down leaving the hair flexible and healthy. Healthy hair is also the product of a healthy lifestyle. Hair grows between a ¼ and a ½ an inch a month. What you eat and how you take care of yourself will be reflected in your hair.

e Langner n li e u q c a J by ssing p Hairdre Soa

Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water, even in the winter. Omega 3 fatty acids are also very important and can reduce itchiness and flakiness. A low fat high protein diet keeps your hair in best shape. There are also plenty of vitamin supplements that can help. Vitamin C reduces excess oil on the scalp and Vitamin E and Zinc help reduce hair loss. If hair loss or just thinning hair is a problem for you, you’re not alone, 50% of all salon clients have thinning hair, but you’ll be pleased to know there may be a solution. For whatever reason your hair has become thinner, and we’ve mentioned a few above, you can now try to reverse this problem with our range of NIOXIN products. NIOXIN uses advanced technologies to deliver thicker, fuller, denser-looking hair. It’s range of hair care products really do offer a solution and has transformed the hair care industry bringing hope and confidence to men and women everywhere. The best bit, if you’re not happy with the results Nioxin brings to your hair, there’s a 30 day money back guarantee, you can’t lose!!

Why exercise? Everyone who exercises does it for their own reasons. Weight loss, to lead a better life, confidence, body image, even prescription by medical professionals. The NHS states the following benefits of exercises • up to a 35% lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke • up to a 50% lower risk of type 2 diabetes • up to a 50% lower risk of colon cancer • up to a 20% lower risk of breast cancer • a 30% lower risk of early death • up to an 83% lower risk of osteoarthritis • up to a 68% lower risk of hip fracture • a 30% lower risk of falls (among older adults) • up to a 30% lower risk of depression • up to a 30% lower risk of dementia “If exercise were a pill, it would be one of the most cost-effective drugs ever invented” - Dr Nick Cavill. So what does exercise look like in a regular hectic lifestyle? Well the recommended amount of exercise per week is 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times. Moderate exercise is anything that you are able to talk, but not being able to hold a full conversation. So you

www.lifeleisure.net /lifeleisureuk

lifeLEIS

need to have a routine that fits in with your lifestyle. So moderate exercise can be anything that you want it to be…..a brisk walk with the dog, even vigorous house work! If you choose to use a gym, then pick an item of cardio equipment i.e. a treadmill, a bike, a rowing machine or cross trainer or similar. Don’t just plod through 30 minutes of constant exercise, mix it up and put in some intervals. Swap machines and keep things interesting, boredom is the enemy. As long as you are completing your 30 minutes of exercise by whatever means possible you are keeping inactivity and the associated problems at bay. Mix this in with some strengthening work and you will be well on the way to bulletproof your body for the rigors of daily living. Feel free to come down to one of our gyms and talk to one of our Health and Fitness Coaches who will point you in the right direction. Every person out there has a body with a different history of injuries, complications and lifestyle. Therefore everyone will need different areas of their body strengthening and other areas stretching out! Doctors are now signposting people to exercise as a remedy to certain conditions, the question is why wouldn’t you exercise?

Save Our Savoy...

the rallying cry in Stockport’s Four Heatons C

ommunity spirit is alive and well in one area of Stockport, where thousands of local people have come together in support of a local cinema facing possible demolition. The Savoy Cinema in Heaton Moor is under threat having been put up for sale by its current owners. But having served The Four Heatons area of Stockport since 1923 it’s no surprise that villagers are not taking its closure lying down. A group of volunteers have started a campaign to save the Savoy with plans to create The Savoy Arts Centre for the wider Stockport area and beyond. Ron Cook, Chairman of the group says, “We have been overwhelmed by the response from local people. We’ve had thousands of people sign our petition with countless others lobbying councillors and offering practical support. It’s really quite amazing and is undoubtedly making a difference towards making our campaign a success.” The aim of the group is clear: to purchase the cinema and transform it into a communityowned arts centre offering a vibrant and diverse cinematic programme, a wide-range of artistic and community activities as well as a bar and café.

The next steps in making the vision a reality are to further involve local people, who are integral to its success. A comprehensive questionnaire has been issued to residents to gain a full insight into what is required from the centre to ensure the success of the venture in meeting the needs of local people. The group are also looking for any other volunteers who might be willing to give some of their time to help with the project. In particular they are looking for: a local qualified builder who could work on small alterations / structural works in the building at no or low cost, someone who would be able to carry out a full dimensional survey of the building and a person local to The Four Heatons with experience of acting as a treasurer for a charity. The group are also looking for people’s stories and memories of The Savoy and would love to hear from you.

My family has been involved in the tree industry for generations initially with forestry and as demand has grown for commercial and domestic tree surgery we have developed and trained to create a skill set to cover this. All aspects of tree work are covered from hedge trimming to works on the largest of trees by our competent NPTC qualified staff. Over the years we have built up a relationship with local councils from all areas. If your trees are in a conservation area or it is covered by a tree preservation order then we can offer advice and apply for permission to carry out any necessary works. We always offer the best advice for the health of the tree. Public Liability Insurance to the sum of ÂŁ5,000,000. We ensure that risk assessments and method statements are carried out prior to the commencement of any work. We also put plans in place to ensure that wildlife is not affected during and after works being undertaken. We have a strong belief in developing the skills and qualifications of our staff especially the younger members with two recently completing an NVQ level 2 and another part way through the course. We are constantly updating our equipment, training and techniques to keep up with the stringent health and safety laws and to maximise efficiency. There are right ways and wrong ways to carry out tree work, which not only has an affect on the tree but can also have an affect on those doing the work and the public. We offer the best advice for the tree and the client please feel free to call Gareth Gerrard at Bankswood Treecare to discuss any of our services.

You are what you eat.. You can’t live your life on a diet!

ooks by AnlidfeyLEISBUrRE How many times have you heard the phrase “you are what you eat”? One more time won’t hurt then… Healthy eating and nutrition is always a mine-field with so many fad diets around and food manufacturers marketing their products as miracle cures! Magazines push celebrity culture and promote super skinny and size zero – what are you to do? As with anything - keep it simple! Human digestive systems weren’t designed to handle the modern refined sugars, starchy carbohydrates, grains, and dairy products that have snuck into our diets over the past couple of thousand years. As a consequence there has been a steady expansion of our waistlines and a rise in lifestyle diseases. In an era before we started to mass farm, package, add sugar, refine, fry and re-fry and all other manner of processing our food), our predecessors lived an altogether healthier lifestyle. So the thinking goes – let’s get back to basics and re-learn how to live right. People can’t live their lives on a diet, what you need is live a healthy lifestyle by making the right choices. Choose food from good sources, food that has not been processed, food without preservatives or additives and always check food labels….especially the first few ingredients. Why the first few? Food laws ensure

lifeLEISURE live 36 SP TraffordliveSPORT

liveLIFE

that food companies must list product ingredients in a descending order according to the degree to which they’re present in the food. Ingredients placed at the front of the list are the main components which are most prevalent in the food. When examining the ingredients list, pay special attention to whether the first few ingredients are natural and/or healthy. Avoid foods which list sugar, high fructose corn syrup or artificial colourings and preservatives as the first few ingredients. Whilst looking at your food label on your products that are marketed as being healthy, or light version – have a look for what ingredients have been added to substitute fat or sugar. These are generally a chemical alternative in the form of emulsifiers, or artificial sweeteners. Both of these do not have a good nutritional values by any means. As mentioned previously you don’t need a fancy crash diet to drop weight, this is distinctly unhealthy and not a good long term approach. Just lead a healthy lifestyle made through sensible choices. At Life Leisure we run 6 week courses that give a more in depth approach to nutrition combined with an exercise programme. We will empower you to make good decisions for life rather than a sticking plaster diet that will create the yoyo weight effect.

You’re in safe hands with Which?-Approved Mike Hallam MAKE sure your boiler is fit for the winter - with a service from a Which?approved Trusted Trader. Gas and heating engineer MHGS has been awarded the much respected Trusted Trader status by consumer watchdog Which? after undergoing a gruelling vetting process. Trading Trader status represents the very highest standards in the industry. Many companies struggle for years to win the Which? seal of approval. “It has been a long process,” says owner Mike Hallam. “They went through our finances, paperwork, everything. All to make sure we were a solid solvent company that provides a great service.” Which? took all of MHGS’s last year’s customer details and contacted ten at random 26

to ensure that MHGS installations were always top notch. Then Mike underwent a three-hour interview to check his technical knowledge and attitude to customer service were up to standard. Cheadle-based, he qualified as a gas engineer with British Gas back in 1986. His career has seen him making and servicing installations in the US, Alaska and Australia, where he lived for ten years. “It’s all great experience,” he said. MHGS carries out a wide range of installations and servicing, including boilers, central heating systems, power flushes, gas fires, landlord gas safety certificates, domestic LPG and cookers. As a Vokera and Vaillant approved installer, MHGS can install boilers that carry a seven-year warranty.

“That’s quite something,” says Mike. “To know you have seven, worry-free years is a real bonus.” Many boilers are being replaced purely on the basis of efficiency, he adds. “The difference between a 60 per cent efficient boiler and a 90 per cent efficient boiler is a big impact on your heating bill.” MHGS is Gas Safe Registered. Make sure you don’t end up in a pickle this winter. Call MHGS to make sure your boiler will see you through the cold weather.

Do you think sorting out your steamed up windows is going to cost a fortune?

Think again....

speak to Lee at WindowGeeks isher

by Emily F

WindowGeeks are specialists in the repair of problem windows, doors and conservatories. Things like, steamed-up double glazed units, faulty locks, handles and hinges…they love fixing things. They operate up and down the UK and Ireland through a network of skilled people who just love fixing things. You’ll be dealing with Lee and his local firm, backed up with a wealth of experience and technical expertise. They’re not into the hard sell, and they won’t be trying to flog you new windows and doors. But if, sadly, your window or door is beyond help, they’ll be able to offer a top quality replacement. They’ve got over thirty five years of experience in the glazing industry. They know timber, aluminium and PVCu and are geeky enough to know all about wind loadings, U values and the latest in thermally efficient glass.

32

SP West

But they also know that sometimes a simple repair is all that’s needed, and we wouldn’t expect you to pay for anything else. If you have problems with any of this list give them a call and I’m sure they will do their best for you: • Steamed Up or fogged glazing • Locks • Handles • Hinges • Leaks and drafts • Patio door problems • Damaged or discoloured frames • Conservatory roof problems • Upgrades to high performance glazing

Can’t see through that window? Does it look like it’s raining – every single day? Never open that door because the lock’s broken? You need a WindowGeek.

Look after your skin this winter.. Stand up to the elements.... by JavinveeBeFauutyrey Re

Why do the winter months have

such a negative effect on our skin? As winter arrives its time to consider changing your skin care routine to stand up to the elements. When I think of my skin during the winter months I think it is time to nourish and repair some of the effects from sun exposure and heat we’ve had in the preceding months. Skin is stripped of its natural moisture by wind, central heating and low humidity. Even people who don’t normally have dry skin can find the winter months are a problem. Anytime the skin is dry, it’s going to become more sensitive and irritated. The winter weather tends to be harsher, so if you have any underlying dermatitis or eczema, that will tend to flair in the winter. But even if you have perfectly healthy skin and you don’t take the appropriate steps to insulate it, you can have problems with dryness and irritation.

Here are a few skin care musts: 1. Exfoliate. In the winter your skin is constantly turning over, and that dead layer of skin needs to come off in a gentle fashion. That’s exfoliation. You can do it with a scrub, cleanser or with a Microdermabrasion which is a more intense treatment. A tip if you have dry skin and you put moisturiser on and it feels like it’s sitting on top of your skin, you’re not exfoliating enough. 2. Moisturise. You need to seal in as much moisture as possible in the winter. We now have moisturisers that actually pull water from the environment and provide a nice blanket of moisture. My favorite ingredient to look for in a serum or cream is hyaluronic acid. It’s not actually an acid, it’s a molecule that works like a sponge on top of the face to pull water in. It will give your skin a nice drink of water all day long without leaving you feeling greasy. Even if you have oily skin, it’s good because the more water you get into your skin, the less oily it will be. 3. Repair and protect: In the summer, dark spots get darker and redness gets worse. During the winter, when you’re not in the sun, it is a great time to repair damage from sun exposure. If you have dark spots, my favorite ingredients to look for are titanium dioxide and arbutin. Just because it’s not summertime doesn’t mean you get a break from sunscreen. Even on a hazy day, you’d be amazed at how much sun you can get. So a cream with a SPF 15 factor is ideal for that added protection. SP West

Play at teachers with Playteachers “Playteachers is a terrific, new, role-play game”

Frazer Moyes

Inventor of “Play Teachers” Game

HANDS up if you know a child who loves to play teachers. Yes, those hands shoot up. Kids love school... especially when they’re the teachers. Playteachers is a terrific, new, role-play game that provides children, aged 4-10, with the opportunity to create their very own mini-classroom, using a register, behaviour book, daily timetable and golden rule cards, certificates, stickers, whiteboard and pen... and much more. “I want it to be fun,” says Poynton primary schoolteacher of 20 years, and the game’s inventor, Frazer Moyes. “A major part of my role is to inspire children through firing their imagination. It can be played with friends, family or even dolls and teddies.” Launched in May last year, he has already sold 2,000 games through Amazon, ebay and toy shops. It was developed through trial and error with his own two children - and

classroom experience.

One child recently computers. “Playteachers remarked, “I love the game. It entertains and educates at makes my toys come alive.” the same time. “ In his own classroom, on Fridays, when children are asked who wants to play teachers during golden time, Frazer says that most hands shoot up. “Imagination has no limits as children can have fun creating their own school using the props enclosed with each pack.”

Need New PCVu Windows? Give Mark Tinkler A Tinkle IF YOU need new or replacement PVCu windows, look no further than Mark Tinkler Simple Window Solutions. Mark, who has worked in the industry for 28 years, says the wide range of PVCu finishes now available is making them more and more popular.

“Things have been great over the last year. We are getting busier all the time.” Mark says customers are especially interested in wood grains. “If you want a PVCu window, you do not have to have just wood or mahogany. There are lots of different types - and there are those suitable for conservation areas.” He says the current vogue is to replace casement with sash windows.

“They meet the highest quality and safety standards but still just look like the old sash windows.” With conservatories being out of favour, he says, nearly all the work at the moment is replacement windows. Mark found the recession never had an impact on the business. “I never really slowed down, the phone never stopped ringing. People seem to be doing more work on their houses.” As usual, it’s quality and customer service that counts. “I think it just comes down to doing a good job. So much of my work comes from people passing on my phone number.” He says the key is to put clients in the picture - from day one.

“Explain to people from the very start what is involved. Honesty pays at the end of the day.” Things are going so well, he adds, that “if things carry on the way they are, I will probably be looking to take someone on next year.” It always does well to bear in mind that - with more than a quarter of all domestic heat loss escaping through windows and doors, spiralling energy bills can add up to a lot of wasted money. Locally Sourced Everything...

oyle by OliveofrtheDPies

O

ne of the hottest food trends right now is ‘locally sourced everything’ The demand for locally-sourced food is not going away – it is growing. For the third year in a row, local food topped the list of most important menu trends according to a National survey of professional chefs. The time is right for farmers and food producers to contact local cafes and restaurants and tell them about their products More and more often in our shop we get asked where our meat comes from; have the chickens been free to roam the Cheshire countryside, do the cows eat Cheshire grass? It is becoming increasingly important for consumers to understand how local the produce is that they are eating. High ‘food miles’ are a big no-no.

Lord

As we are based in the centre of Stockport (and without a garden!) unfortunately this means it isn’t possible for us, but hopefully if we open another bakery, we will get the opportunity to do this one day. The idea of growing and picking our own vegetables for our freshly made soup of the day makes it all the more exciting and an opportunity to be more creative. It has also become increasingly popular for people to ‘drink local’ and you may have noticed popping up over Stockport recently are a number of micro breweries. Quantum Brewing Co for example, are a small craft microbrewery, making ales in cask, keg and bottle and selling to local free houses.

At our bakery we use a highly reputable and long established Stockport based butcher, who sources meat from farms throughout Cheshire.

Places like High Peak Beer Co who operate out of Stockport Market Hall follow CAMRA’s LocAle principle, which is to stock produce which been sourced predominantly from micro breweries within a 30 mile radius of their outlet.

Not only does this trend relate to meat, but also fruit and vegetables which are the original ‘local foods’. It is popular now for cafes and restaurants to grow their own produce on site, either for use in their menus or to be sold directly to the consumer. The name for this trend is called ‘hyperlocal’.

The trend for ‘locally sourced everything’ is huge in America right now, and is slowly becoming more visible throughout Europe. Once you taste and experience the quality of local produce, it’s hard to find the motive to visit the aisles of your local supermarket to see your beef has come from Brazil...

Changes in the mortgage market mmer by MCiryksteal RFinai ncial

Obtaining a mortgage can be one of the biggest financial

decisions any of us will ever make. The choice of lender, type of deal and size of deposit are only a few of the factors you will have to consider. Another decision is whether to use your local bank or building society or a mortgage broker.

The recent Mortgage Market Review (MMR) brought in by the Financial Conduct Authority in April 2014 has had a great effect on our ability to get a mortgage. One of the major changes is that lenders must prove borrowers only get a mortgage they can afford. This now means that the banks, building societies must assess whether your new mortgage will be affordable by scrutinizing and stress testing your income and expenditure. For a long time now brokers have had to prove affordability and collect the relevant documents that could substantiate this. As brokers have always needed to be qualified the new rules have only really enforced what has long been their usual practice. Arguably the greatest change has fallen upon the banks

and building societies. The new rules state that to give advice their staff must be trained and qualified to a similar standard as brokers. This has resulted in some scheduling longer appointments to discuss your potential application. Alternatively, many brokers offer a more flexible service with appointments outside of the usual working hours and quite often in your own homes. Many brokers can also offer a comprehensive range of mortgages from across the market, allowing you to assess your options with one meeting. This flexibility and expertise can allow them to offer a greater range of products and can also help ensure that your protection needs are correctly addressed. The outcome of the recent changes has resulted in the application process being a more rigid and time consuming affair. Due to this, greater consideration should be given to effective use of your time. You can now be assured that whoever you talk to will be fully qualified. A professional mortgage broker can usually offer a wide range of mortgages and the flexibility to meet clients at a time that suits them.

YOUR HOME MAY BE REPOSSESSED IF YOU DO NOT KEEP UP REPAYMENTS ON YOUR MORTGAGE. Initial Consultation is free. A broker fee of ÂŁ149 will be charged on application of your mortgage.

Quality Second Hand Furniture, Appliances & Computers IF YOU are after cut-price household goods - and want to give a helping hand to the less fortunate - get down to Renewal North West. The Christian charity offers a large selection of secondhand furniture, household goods and computers at knockdown prices from its Meadow Mill address, on Water Street, Stockport. All the goods are refurbished items, or good as new, donated to the charity by members of the public. Renewal North West was started almost ten years ago as a computer renovation operation, in the roof-space of a church building. Then, after an initial move, it relocated to its current venue, selling second-hand white goods - fridges, freezers, washing machines - household goods, laptops, and renovating used furniture. The charity grew with the aim of helping long-term unemployed people break 48

down the barriers that prevent them from working, and provide furniture and household items to those struggling to set up home on a limited budget. It operates a community computers scheme that makes laptops and PCs available more cheaply to those on benefits. “We are supported by the Christian Church, at Brownwood Hall, Wythenshawe,” says technical manager Chris Bennett. Members of the church sit as trustees on the charity’s board. As well as the household goods, Renewal operates The Rinascente Gallery, a large showroom filled to the brim with vintage, hand-painted and industrial furniture. “It has opened up a different market,” says Chris. “It is aimed at people with more money to spend on something that’s unique.” The charity has been particularly successful in offering a line of bespoke

industrial tables”, says Chris. “And we have recently started getting into the gardening side of things,” says Chris. Customers can now order landscaping requirements from the charity. It operates an online shop, where customers can browse through the goods and order online. The Renewal operation is run by Wes Downs, general manager and trustee, along with a management team. Sometimes as many as 14 additional workers, who include volunteers and those on work placements, work on site. The store is open to the public and no referral is needed. The hospice - which cares for and supports thousands of local people every year at its sites in Heald Green, Little Hulton and the Neil Cliffe Centre in Wythenshawe Hospital – is looking for help from those who are interested in taking part in one of Manchester’s sporting events, including the Great Manchester Marathon (19th April 2015), Great Manchester Run (10th May 2015), Great Manchester Cycle (29th June 2015) or the Great Manchester Swim later this year.

“There are so many ways to get involved and help St Ann’s in 2015 and we’re hoping that as many local people as possible come forward with their support.”

Greater Manchester to help them raise much-needed funds this year, by taking part in a challenge event for the charity.

It has got the Bae Boutique girls thinking about what to pack in our fashionably fabulous suitcases for our summer breaks.... Now the answer to this very important question of course lies in what type of holiday you’re planning and of course your destination? For example a weekend in Barcelona will require somewhat different suitcase ingredients to a week in Thailand... And obviously a winter holiday opens a whole other can of worms not covered here...But we have tried to suggest below a somewhat capsule summer wardrobe that can be added to, or tweaked to suit your individual requirements.... Number 1 on any fashionably fabulous vacationing girls hotlist has got to be “The Dresses”! Anyone who is worth their red soled heels, knows that half the fun of a holiday is having an excuse to get dolled up EVERY night as if it’s the Saturday after payday! So the dresses you pick should be the starting point at which you build the rest of your travelling closet around. For a weeks holiday we would suggest at least 4 fabulous dresses, and of course every girl knows the best type of holiday dress, is a new holiday dress!! (Or 4) it’s a good idea, for each piece to serve a slightly different purpose....

by Jo Hoddes Now you don’t have to go as far as a Celebrity Stylist, in terms of laying out each outfit including shoes and accessories and taking a Polaroid, so you know what to put with what when you reach your destination but it is good to use some of the tricks of the trade. We suggest laying out outfits, with shoes and accessories all together, this way you are able to see where it is possible to streamline... Do you really need 2 pairs of black heels for example? Could both those outfits go with one handbag, rather than packing one for each outfit? It should also help to ensure you don’t forget a key piece... And far less stressful than simply throwing everything in and hoping for the best, after all wouldn’t you rather be sipping champagne and looking effortlessly fabulous!! Happy Holidays! Love the Bae Boutique Girls xx

Welcome to the darkside... by Corin orB&laStocnkpdort)

Bottle (Heaton

The winter months of long dark nights are perfect

for enjoying those rich, dark beer styles of stout and porters. Although most people associate these styles of beer with big brand names like Guinness, you’d be missing a trick by not checking out the cornucopia of varieties available to you from the ever growing number of micro breweries both in the UK and abroad. Traditionally, Porter was a beer made with a greater emphasis on the malt content as opposed to the hops and used darker types of malt like brown and chocolate which gave the beers the mahogany hues they are renowned for. Allegedly, Porter took its name from its popularity with the transportation workers of our capital city in the late 18th and 19th century, which used it to slake their thirst after a hard days labour. Stout, which had been used previously to describe a stronger beer of any style, over time, came to be associated as a stronger version of Porter. However, the beer world more than most is subject to change and the explosion of microbreweries over recent years, with younger brewers taking a more experimental approach to brewing, has seen an eye Bottle (Heaton Moor) 9 Shaw Road Heaton Moor Stockport

Mo

watering variety of beers available. This has made it harder to categorise beers into narrow styles with the lines often becoming blurred. Evil Twins big and bold Imperial Biscotti Break challenges the strength definition of Porter for example, weighing in at a hefty 11.5%, while Weird Beards lovely Black Perle is a very sessionable 3.8% coffee and milk Stout whose lactose sugar tickles my sweet tooth. Barrel aging allows further development of beer styles as Magic Rock’s Bearded Lady Imperial Brown Stout, a truly impressive beer in its own right, was taken to another level from being aged in Pedro Ximenez sherry barrels. It should have come with a fireside and leather armchair to relax in while you sip and savour it. White Stouts have also seen a comeback with Siren and Mikeller breweries Beer Geek Daydream at 12% ABV, reinstating the idea that Stout related to strength rather than colour, although the addition of coffee, cocoa and vanilla certainly put a modern twist on the beer. Put simply, ignore the traditional labels and misconceptions relating to dark beer and if you haven’t already, take a trip to the darkside with some expert advice from your local pub or beer shop, you wont be disappointed.

FREE childcare... Are you eligible?

Cross by LynrtdVsilelayge Nursery Stockpo

O

ver 1,200 two year olds in Stockport are eligible for up to 570 hours per year of FREE childcare. If you receive certain benefits or have an annual household income below £16,190 then call into your local Surestart Centre and the friendly staff will check if a free place is available and help you register. Or you can telephone 0161 217 6028. The FREE places are to help with your child’s early learning and development through play. Children aged between two and five will follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). ‘ Learning through play’ helps children begin to understand simple sentences, listen and enjoy rhymes and stories, express themselves through action and sound and begin to make and manipulate objects and tools. Some of the benefits include • Improving children’s development, for example their communication skills • Helping them learn to socialise with other children and make friends • Giving them access to new activities and exciting places to play • Helping them begin to get ready for school To check if a place is available to you, simply drop into your local Sure Start Children’s Centre where they will check for you. You will need to provide your national insurance number, name and date of birth. If you are working you will need to provide evidence of your benefits. This is your tax awards notice (TC602)

58

SP West

To take up one of the funded places for your two year old you must be in receipt of one or more of the following: • Families in receipt of non-working benefits • Families with a total household income of less than £16,190. This will be recorded in your awards notice • Children receiving Disability Living Allowance • Children with a statement of SEN or an Education, Health and Care plan • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 • Children looked after by the local authority or left care through a special guardianship, adoption or residence order Families will always be better off taking up a free place because tax credits only contribute to a percentage of the full cost of a place, and not all of it. You can then top this up with additional childcare through Care To Learn or Childcare Grants, etc (student parents) or any extra hours you may wish to purchase and which are supported by the childcare element of Working Tax Credit (working parents). Your local Sure Start Children’s Centre can advise and support you. It is important to keep HMRC informed of any changes to your circumstances. If you receive tax credits and then take up a free childcare place, you must inform HMRC as soon as possible - either if your childcare costs stop or your average weekly costs go down by £10 or more.

Book convenient outof-hours doctors’ appointments . . . No more struggling to see your GP. Just phone GP Extra and book an out-of-hours appointment.

GP Extra is a new private GP service that allows patients to book convenient out-of-hours doctors’ appointments. With surgeries in Cheadle and Rochdale, evening and Saturday-morning 20-minute consultations are available at the end of the phone.

Sometimes, doctors do not have the time to talk to their patients thoroughly. “The NHS does not have the resources to do that.” Prescriptions, referrals to specialists, scans and x-ray/ ultrasound are all available as usual. Dr Adam Simon

Director Jacqui Simon said the real inspiration behind the business lay in the old-fashioned image of a traditional GP. “That was the idea,” she said. “Someone you could sit down with and take time to discuss a problem.” With just seven minutes typically allowed for an NHS appointment, some patients feel there can be a tendency to be pushed through the system.

60

SP West

GP Extra’s lead doctor is Dr Adam Simon, a full-time, practising NHS GP in Oldham. He has been a GP for 13 years, with a further five spent in casualty, and heads a team of doctors at GP Extra. The GP

extra team consists of both male and female GPs. Jacqui believes GP Extra’s key service’s are: - No more struggling to see your GP. Just phone GP Extra and book an out-of-hours appointment. - Spend more time with your doctor. GP Extra appointments last 20 minutes. GP Extra’s patients come from a broad spectrum. Many work during the day and struggle to reach a doctor in working hours; Manchester is a large city with a huge transient population that needs a speedy healthcare service; and there are many struggling to arrange a timely appointment, disappointed to be told by a receptionist that it will take three weeks. Fees do apply. However, there is no registration fee and all patients aged three and over are welcome.

Winter Pet Care... grooming during winter?

Many owners ask if they should continue with their regular grooming appointments during winter. The simple answer to this is yes. The temptation is to leave the coat to grow over the winter to keep them warm and snuggly. This sounds perfectly logical and with correct care and attention it is possible, however, winter coats can hide trouble such as lumps, bumps or sores, if you normally have your dog trimmed there’s no need to stop. If your dog is a mud magnet or spends all day rolling around in the grass, having a long coat can be a nightmare any time of the year, especially in the rain, mud or snow. Long coats take a lot of brushing and combing to keep on top of them, this work doubles after a wet and muddy walk. You can’t leave them to dry without brushing and combing and you cannot towel dry without brushing either. Long or wool coated dogs will simply develop matts and tangles, these can be uncomfortable as well as a hiding area for parasites! They are more likely to get twigs, leaves and all sorts of debris stuck in their coats in the winter too so a trim is still a good idea. You don’t have to have them as short as you would in the summer but you can still have some length / bulk removed. If you really don’t want any coat removing you groomer can still do a good bath and groom out then trim the hair between the pads and clip the nails. Many groomers will do this cheaper than a full trim and an advantage of allowing your groomer to do this

wley by PaBesmt FrRiendos

for you will save you hours of work and means your dog will be completely dry. Damp dogs tend do to smell a bit “doggy”. Winter weather is tough on paws, you can minimise problems such as cracked pads, irritation, infection from snow, salt, mud, rain etc. by simply wiping feet dry after each outing. Be especially watchful for snow or mud balls between the pads, this is most common in spaniels, poodles and bichons. Between baths, to keep your dog clean and sweet smelling, you could use one of the dry shampoos available, again ask your groomer for advice. If your dog is indoors more frequently in the winter, the nails may need extra trimming, check weekly and if you hear the “click-click” on bare floors chances are they need trimming. Again most groomers offer this as a stand-alone service. Most owners welcome the colder weather as it signals the end of the flea season. However, fleas can still hang on for months in a warm house or dog bed. Don’t let your defences down just because its winter. Keep up your flea control programme all year. If you have any questions about your dog’s coat care pop in and have a chat with your local groomer most are more than happy to advise. groomer who has ilds level 3 qualified Pam is a City and Gu She is a qualified gs for over 25 years. been grooming do imal care to level an d an ing dog groom teacher and teaches industry Pam was years service to the 3. Is your hearing deteriorating?

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss.. nsley BA (Hons) erineSoLa by Cath tors Beeley & Co. lici What is noise-induced hearing loss? Age is the biggest single cause of hearing loss but another common cause of hearing loss is damage to the ear due to repeated exposure to loud noises over time and this is called Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL). When the ear is exposed to excessive levels of loud sounds over time, the sensitive hair cells inside the cochlea become damaged and once this occurs, it is permanent. What causes NIHL? NIHL can be caused by a one-time exposure to an intense “impulse” sound called acoustic trauma, such as an explosion, or by continuous exposure to loud sounds over an extended period of time. Those people working in noisy environments or with noisy equipment and were not provided with protective equipment are at risk of developing this condition. Measurement of Noise Sound is measured in units called decibels. Sounds of less than 75 decibels, even after long exposure, are unlikely to cause hearing loss. However, long or repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 decibels can cause hearing loss. The louder the sound, the shorter the amount of time it takes for NIHL to happen. Here are the average decibel ratings of some sounds: • Normal conversation 60 decibels • Noise from heavy city traffic 85 decibels • Air Compressor 94 decibels • Hilti Guns 103 decibels • Fireworks and firearms 150 decibels What are the effects and signs of NIHL? When you are exposed to loud noise over a long period of time, you may slowly start to lose your hearing. Because the damage from noise exposure is usually gradual, you might not notice it, or you might ignore the signs of hearing loss until they become more pronounced. Over time, sounds may become distorted or muffled, and you might find it difficult to understand other people when they talk or have to turn up the volume on the television.

64

SP West

Loud noise exposure can also cause tinnitus—a ringing, buzzing, or roaring in the ears or head. Hearing loss and tinnitus can occur in one or both ears.

Can NIHL be prevented? NIHL is the only type of hearing loss that is completely preventable. If you understand the hazards of noise and how to practice good hearing health, you can protect your hearing for life. Here’s how: • Know which noises can cause damage (those at or above 85 decibels). • Wear earplugs or other protective devices when involved in a loud activity (activity-specific earplugs and earmuffs are available at hardware and sporting goods stores). • If you can’t reduce the noise or protect yourself from it, move away from it. • Be alert to hazardous noises in the environment. • Protect the ears of children who are too young to protect their own. • Make family, friends, and colleagues aware of the hazards of noise. • Have your hearing tested if you think you might have hearing loss. What should I do if I need more advice about NIHL? At Beeley & Co Solicitors we have a dedicated team headed up by myself, Catherine Lansley who will offer you a free consultation and expert advice about seeking compensation for your hearing loss. If you think you may have NIHL then we can arrange for you to undergo an Audiogram to determine this. The audiogram test takes no longer than 10 minutes. We pride ourselves on our communication skills with each and everyone of our clients and we are always available to advise you on your potential claim. You can call us now or complete our online claim form. Remember, this service is free and gives you the chance to find out how we can help you gain maximum compensation through our excellent services on offer.

Stokport Market isher

by Emily F

THERE’S nothing quite like a market. There’s certainly nothing quite like Stockport market. It sits in the heart of Stockport, as popular as ever, having been issued its charter - its legal right to exist - in 1260. The thriving hustle and bustle has provided a community focal point for generation after generation of Stopfordians. Its iconic centre, the Victorian covered market, was built in 1851, designed to be a healthy building for selling fresh farm produce. Updated and renovated several times since then, it has featured in many films and television programs - perhaps, most famously in Yanks, starring Richard Gere. It was originally open at the sides, and constructed using the most modern technology of the day. Its iron frame and large areas of glass would have created an awe-inspiring impact, similar to the glass and steel skyscrapers of today. The market place itself dates from the 15th century and was part of the outer defence enclosure of Stockport Castle. The Castle was first referred to in 1173, but by 1535 it was in ruins and finally demolished in

1775. It stood on what is now referred to as Castle Yard. In 2006, The Heritage Lottery Fund awarded £1million towards restoring the market place. Much of the work was carried out on the covered market, aimed at balancing the needs of shoppers and retailers, yet restoring its Victorian origins. Over the years, planners have periodically come up with ideas to do away with the covered market and install something that generates higher revenues. The people’s vote for the market has always won the day. It holds an especially popular Vintage Village on the second Sunday of each month featuring vintage clothing and collectables of all kinds. There is a Book & Record Fair on the first Sunday of each month, and a ‘Handmade’ market on the third Sunday, featuring a selection of local artisan crafts, homemade produce and personalised gifts. - The general market is open Tuesday & Friday 8.30am - 4pm, Saturday 8.30am 4.30pm - The covered market is open Tuesday 9am - 4pm, Thursday 9.30am - 3pm, Friday & Saturday 9am 4.30pm. let loose LET your kids have a lotta fun - let ‘em loose at Let Loose. The Hazel Grove soft-play children’s centre is proving to be a massive hit with kids aged 0-11. Manager Thom Des Forges says, “We have so much to offer. There’s so much to do here, the kids just love it.” The activity centre has recently added a holiday club and an after-school club - Club Loose - (Ofsted approved) to its facilities. Its many amenities include, a: - Three-tier Play Frame - Choice of three separate slides - Go-Kart track - Sports pitch - Build-a-Bear - Craft studio - Sensory Zone - Cinema Room

Thom and his team, now numbering 30, are passionate about making Let Loose a great experience for children and adults.

The Play Frame is awesome, challenging and lots of fun, with a daring drop slide and plenty of surprises. The Sensory Room is a space where babies can have fun and explore their surrounding environment, regardless of their ability. Toddler Town is a community designed specially for little visitors, aged 0-3 years - this is their very own town to explore.

“My passion is customer service,” says Thom. “I love kids - and I love dealing with adults as well. I don’t have anyone who isn’t happy in their work on my team.”

The difference between men and women in the bathroom! We at Bath Solutions know our Bathrooms, and we know how our customers use them and what they want from them!

We’d like to help you convince your other half that you need a new bathroom;

and efficient towel rails for the energy bills. Finally, how about clever accessories?

We at Bath Solutions are up to 30% cheaper than the high street because we design your Bathroom with you in your own home, we supply and install a great range of Bathroom products and with the best possible level of customer service, but first let’s have some fun with the gender stereotypes.

Now then Gentlemen, your Lady is not likely to consider the litres of water per flush. Surroundings are important, it’s a place to plan the day or reflect on the day’s events. Think about clean pleasantly lit spaces, matching accessories; let’s have clean cut panels instead of grubby grouting. A quiet, candlelit bath to relax away from the family.

OK Ladies, it’s time to put away your thoughts of bubbles and a good book, if you are going to convince your man then talk about functionality. It is all about the power of the shower, storage to get rid of the girly clutter (all absolutely necessary of course!), water efficient taps

All this leads to one conclusion, the things we want are pretty much compatible, it is the reasons we want them that differ. Call the Bath Solutions team on 01618713892 for a new Bathroom in the New Year.

River Cruising....

Picture yourself on a boat on a river....

R

iver Cruising is now being discovered by those wanting a holiday that is all about the destination. You do need to be reasonably fit, this is not a ‘flop and drop’ type of holiday but it is relaxing; once aboard, you only have to unpack once, there are no early morning tour buses to catch and no complicated city centre roads to navigate trying to find your next hotel.

Burgess by HelAden eona Travel include complimentary excursions but because the vessels are small you get to moor right in the heart of the cities you visit, it’s easy to just walk ashore and wander at your own pace. When sailing there is always somewhere to relax and something to see as you pass through the countryside, towns and cities.

When comparing River Cruise prices it’s important to consider what’s included in the price. Your food is always included and not having to pay for meals each day make a big difference to your overall holiday cost. Wine, beer or soft drinks are generally included with meals but some have now extended this to include all your drinks on-board.

Our most popular one week river cruise is along the Rhine taking you from Amsterdam to Basel in Switzerland. Sailing through France and Germany this cruise is filled with centuries of history and culture, passing through the magnificent Rhine Gorge and to the edge of the Black Forest. The Upper Danube is also a favourite – a one week cruise will typically include Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna and Salzburg.

River Cruising is all about the destination you are visiting. Most days you will cruise for half the day and then dock for half of the day to explore. In larger cities you will have at least a day and sometimes the itinerary will include an overnight stay. Many cruise lines now

River Cruising is still quite a specialist holiday but if you enjoy touring and like to be immersed in your destination then we can heartily recommend it. With the new modern vessels offering high standards and great value for money, river cruising is set to grow in popularity.

Mellor Country House Charity No. 241153 Providing a safe, secure, relaxing and uplifting environment for the financially and socially disadvantaged

Mellor Country House is a UK charity, built in 1907,

set in three acres of garden and woodland located in the pretty village of Mellor, situated on the border between Greater Manchester and the High Peak. The charity is dedicated to providing self - catering respite breaks for groups, families, carers and individuals primarily from the nearby urban areas because we know that many would not, or could not otherwise, have a break at all. The Charity’s aim is to provide a safe, secure, relaxing and uplifting environment for the financially and socially disadvantaged. One little girl who stayed with us was very upset when the time to go home came, more so than the usual tears we sometimes have. We were in a quandary as we had given her the teddy she had become attached to and could not figure out what was causing her to be so upset. It was when we read her comment she had written I our visitors book that It costs thousands of pounds to sustain the house and grounds which we endeavor to raise each year. Finding funding has been extremely hard and it has become increasingly more difficult to raise the much needed funds. We do not receive any funds from anywhere except those we can raise ourselves by fundraising events such as our Plant Sale, Open day, Garden Party, bag packs and Christmas Delights .The community which we rely on heavily, has become very involved over the years, supporting our very worthwhile cause. We accept donations

we got to the bottom of it. She had written that she had loved her stay especially the bed it was so soft and warm, this made us ask did she have to share at home but the answer was that she did not have any bed at home and had to sleep on the sofa. A harsh realisation dawned on us and we managed to pacify her by reassuring her that we would keep her that bedroom especially for her for when she came back again. We believe passionately that for many of the people who stay at the house, this break from the hardships of their day-to-day existence can, literally, be a life-saver. Accommodation for up to 24 guests is provided in 11 bedrooms in beautifully decorated facilities with a warm and friendly atmosphere. Also there is a well equipped kitchen, dining room, restful lounges and children’s playroom. The grounds include a secure play area for toddlers, a bike track for the older children, a paved patio with barbeque, a private lawn area with benches and seating for quiet reflection. of clothes, unwanted gifts, food, toys, household goods to recycle to those who need them and garden furniture as well as money. All contributions are very much appreciated and gratefully received and we could not run the charity without the support of our neighbors and community. There are many ways you can support us including volunteering, any help you can give us no matter how small can make a huge difference. If you don’t know how or where to start, just give us a call, even if you can only spare one hour, it will be worth it to us.
