svsu.edu/olli Message from the Director of OLLI

It’s hard to believe that winter is just around the corner, but isn’t that always the case here in Michigan? While we all hope the winter snow and ice stay away as long as possible, most of us have acclimated to the crispness of the air and the glistening frost each morning. Here at OLLI, we aimed to please yet again this semester as we planned a variety of classes and trips to keep you busy and your mind off the weather. Be sure to check out the new Travel section of the catalog and our wide selection of fitness classes, geared toward people like you — it’ll help you get into, or keep, in shape this winter season.

Wednesday, January 8 – Winterfest: Remembering Elvis Presley on his Birthday by Scott Seeburger

Our annual Winterfest meeting has more than 20 vendors from around the area. Help us celebrate the King! On Elvis Presley’s birthday, Scott Seeburger remembers one of the most celebrated performing artists of the 20th century. This presentation will recall all eras of his career and include his exciting performances, his impact on music and Presley’s personal spiritual journey. This discussion includes Presley’s performances in Saginaw, which Seeburger was able to see. Seeburger has been a longtime music fan and former contemporary music writer for The Saginaw News and he has covered music arts for The Detroit Free Press.

Wednesday, February 12 – Unearthing the African American Dream in the 19th Century Midwest by Jennifer Stinson, Ph.D., SVSU

Amid sweeping economic changes, rising immigration and intensifying debates about slavery, white Americans in the mid 19th century looked to the West as their “manifest destiny.” They and the New York journalist John O’Sullivan, who coined that phrase, rarely acknowledged or welcomed the free African Americans who, like white settlers, put down roots and planted crops across the Upper Mississippi Valley. Yet rural families of color richly shaped the economies, cultures and politics of the farm neighborhoods and small towns they helped to found. Jennifer Stinson, associate professor of history at SVSU, weaves together diverse documents written by and about 19th century African American midwesterners. Her presentation draws from her book project, They All Mixed in Together, the White and the Colored: Freedom, Family and Race in the Rural Upper Midwest, 1820-1920.

Wednesday, March 11 – Saving our Seeds by Ben Cohen, Small House Farms

Ben Cohen of Small House Farms will give an energetic and informative presentation highlighting the importance of community seed sharing programs and why planting, saving and sharing seeds is essential to the cultivation of sustainable neighborhoods and healthy communities. Ben is an author, herbalist, gardener, seed saver and educator. He offers workshops and lectures across the country on the benefits of living closer to the land through seeds, herbs and locally grown food. He has published numerous works on these topics including his most recent book, Saving Our Seeds. Copies of Ben’s new book will be available for purchase after his talk.

Wednesday, April 8 – The Energy of the Future by a Representative from Consumers Energy

Consumers Energy is leading the utility industry by making people, planet and prosperity the key elements of its business strategy. The 134-year-old company is committed to relying more on solar power in its future and in 2016 began phasing out a coal plant. At MiCleanEnergyPlan.com, customers can learn more about the role they play in reducing peak demand for electricity, eliminating energy waste and shrinking carbon emissions through a growing number of programs that save money and energy.

STRATFORD FESTIVAL 2020

Save the Date for Stratford Festival: June 9 & 10, 2020 Since it began in 1953, the Stratford Festival has attracted almost 29 million theatre lovers from around the world. In 2020, the festival will unveil the new Tom Patterson Theatre, named for the Festival’s founder. Travel with OLLI to the Stratford Festival in 2020! The following performances and dates have already been selected for your enjoyment. A detailed brochure will be available in February 2020.

Chicago

This hit musical, which holds the record for longest-running musical revival on Broadway, will be entirely reimagined by Feore, whose work with musicals on the Stratford Festival stage has transformed classics and transfixed audiences. Under her creative guidance, this magnificent production will be unlike any version of the show you may have seen before. With its killer score and knock-’em-dead dance numbers, this deliciously lurid tale of murder, greed, adultery — and all that jazz — packs some serious heat.

Richard III

Richard III is the play that launched the Stratford Festival in 1953 in a massive tent overlooking the Avon River. To launch the glorious new Tom Patterson Theatre, Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino has invited stage and screen star Colm Feore home to play the historically significant title role in the play. Having recently been honored with a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for a lifetime of creative achievement, Feore will play Richard, a psychopath determined to seize the crown. In examining an individual who is shameless in his drive to achieve power, Shakespeare encourages us to ask: How do bad people rise to power? Why do we support those who are obviously corrupt and immoral?

Three Tall Women

By turns acerbic, haughty, self-pitying and anguished, a wealthy old woman reminisces to two younger companions, sharing her past experiences in sometimes shocking detail. But are her two hearers only who they seem to be? And how did this dying woman come to be who she is? How can any of us know who we really are — or who we will become? Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women is like an x-ray, examining unresolved and unresolvable relationship conflicts as experienced by different generations of women. Diana Leblanc, a pioneering director at the festival, directs this great American classic.

WINTER 2020 CLASSES (274) Star Trek and The History of the Future

This class will consist of the viewing and discussion of episodes of Star Trek in which the Roddenberry Ideal of a positive and humanist future was used to comment on the society of the era. The main topic for this set of episodes is the reaction to war. Participants will watch “It’s Only a Paper Moon” from Deep Space Nine; “The Wounded” from The Next Generation; “Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges” from Deep Space Nine; and “Devil in the Dark” from the original Star Trek series. Instructor: Christine Szilagyi, M.A., Veteran Instructor Mondays 3/9, 3/16, 3/23, 3/30 • 2:45-4:45 p.m. Location: C129 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

(275) Big Questions from the Dark Ages

Why, how and when did the Roman Empire fall? What were the great inventions and discoveries of the Medieval era? How did Latin and Greek survive? Ask the Irish. Were the vikings really civilizers? Feeling ill? Head for Cordoba. What was the most important “discovery” of the year in 1202 and how did it change your life? The Black Death, a reconsideration. Why the Gothic Cathedral matters to all of us. When and how did the women’s movement begin? What killed feudalism? When and how did the Renaissance truly begin? Who brought cotton to Europe and why does it matter? Why we owe so much to the Portuguese. These and other vital questions will be considered in four sessions as we look at an era long scoffed at by scholars but now being reconsidered. It is a vital period and not “dark” by any stretch of the imagination. Instructor: Thomas Donahue, Veteran Instructor Thursdays • 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 3/26 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C140 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

(276) World War II in North Africa – Part 2

Then we’ll examine Operation Torch, the American invasion of North Africa, where they fought the French, not the Italians or Germans. (277) Chester A. Arthur: The Accidental President

Chester Alan Arthur, an upper-level operative in the New York Republican Party machine of Roscoe Conkling, became president after the assassination of James Garfield. The most unlikely of our presidents, this man who never had been elected to any office, now demonstrated honesty, courage and ability. His years as president, though, would be very difficult since most Republican reformers did not trust him and most of his former machine colleagues saw him as having betrayed them. Furthermore, a few months into his presidency, he was diagnosed with a fatal disease from which he died a year and a half after he left office. However, he deserves respect for what he achieved and for what he attempted during his years in office. Instructor: John Pafford, Ph.D., Veteran Instructor Tuesdays • 2/11, 2/18, 2/25, 3/3 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C140 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

WINTER 2020 CLASSES (278) War and World History*

This course will offer a look at the various wars throughout history. This class is not the history of battles or military campaigns, but the history of war and the damage war does to human societies. The class doesn’t get bogged down in the details of battles or ideologies. Areas of discussion will include the contexts of historical time, technology, societies, economics and religion. Instructor: Zane Rybkowski, OLLI Member Mondays • 4/6, 4/13, 4/20, 4/27 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C140 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

(279) Technology on the Saginaw River

Bay City has seen industries from logging and saw mills to shipbuilding, the chemical industry and Aladdin homes grow on the Saginaw River. These industries shaped the area we see today. There is much talk about STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) and how these skills will help with the economic development of our area. Many people approach science and engineering skills as if they are new to the Saginaw Bay Area, but these talents and competencies built this region. The skills and knowledge of the logging industry led to the shipbuilding and chemical industry along with smaller industries such as kit homes and boats. The major shipbuilders such as Davidson, Wheeler and Defoe used and added to the STEAM techniques of their day. Some of the largest Great Lakes ships were built using the most innovative techniques of their time in Bay City. This class will highlight the early technical proficiencies of the major shipbuilders and other industries in Bay City. This class will also showcase how they have laid the groundwork from the 1800s on for what Bay City has become today. Instructor: Don Comtois and Chris Eckerle, OLLI Members Mondays • 2/3, 2/10, 2/17 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C140 Price: $23 for members • $46 for non-members

(280) Great Moments in the History of Medicine

How did medicine advance from bleeding with leeches and treating the humors to using PET scans? From extracting medicines from tree bark to genetically engineering specific treatments for a single individual? This fascinating class will cover 150 years of stunning advances in human medicine. Instructor: Louis Constan, M.D. Mondays • 3/9, 3/16, 3/23 • 1-3 p.m. Location: C140 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

LEGAL STUDIES (281) Where’s Your Warrant? Search and Seizure Law and Lessons

WINTER 2020 CLASSES LITERATURE

(282) Concerning 21st Century English*

From its beginning, English developed as an angled weave of speech from local people and immigrants to the British Isles. Fifteen hundred years later, English has become global and a dominant means of communication. But controversy over usage, correctness and standard forms is ongoing. In this class we will consider English as it is spoken, written and the viewpoints of historical grammarians and modern linguists. We will look at topics such as the assumptions about what is right and wrong, logic and tradition in language usage. Also, we will scrutinize formal and informal English, along with the language’s newest form: texting. Instructor: Bob Enszer, OLLI Member Tuesdays • 3/3, 3/10, 3/17, 3/24 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C129 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

(283) OLLI Book Club

We have a great selection for the winter session of the OLLI Book Club. January features Becoming, an intimate and inspiring memoir by Michelle Obama. Our February book is The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson. In 1936, a young Appalachian woman joins the historic Pack Horse Library – and faces prejudice as she is the last living female of the genetically rare Blue People ancestry. March features The Lost Man by Jane Harper. A powerful and brutal familial story of suspense set against a formidable landscape in the Australian outback. And in April, we read Sold on a Monday by Kristina McMorris. Inspired by an actual newspaper photograph that stunned the nation, this is a novel of love, redemption and the unexpected paths that bring us home. Instructor: Kathy McAllister, Margy Lee, Debra Vancour, Marcia Matthews, OLLI Members Wednesdays • 1/29, 2/26, 3/25, 4/29 • 1:30-3:30 p.m. Location: C140 (3/25 class will be in C129) Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

WINTER 2020 CLASSES (284) Edith Wharton: Short Works

Fall under the spell of select Edith Wharton shorter novels and her ghost stories; Rose Kohut will be your guide. You’ll begin with two contrasting novellas — Ethan Frome (about a quiet man, his ailing wife and the wife’s cousin Mattie) and Summer (a young woman moves beyond her boring library job). Next, you’ll study The Ghost Stories of Edith Wharton, which include tales about a married man under the spell of a dead girl and how weird spectral eyes start haunting an elderly man. You’ll conclude with the novella The Mother’s Recompense, which concerns a young woman’s return to New York society after being exiled for abandoning her family. Two books are suggested for this class: Edith Wharton/Novellas and Other Writings and The Ghost Stories of Edith Wharton, both available inexpensively from Alibris. Instructor: Rose Kohut, OLLI Member Tuesdays • 3/3, 3/10, 3/17, 3/24 • 1-3 p.m. Location: C129 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

(285) Macbeth: “Fair is Foul and Foul is Fair” Planning on attending the SVSU production of Macbeth? For a fuller and deeper understanding of “the Scottish Play,” come join us for an in-depth study of two of Shakespeare’s most complex characters, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. This will be the third in a series of courses on Shakespeare’s greatest plays. You will also get a chance to hear from Tommy Wedge, director of SVSU’s production of Macbeth. As it will be in large part discussion-oriented course, it is essential to have read this, the shortest of all Shakespeare’s plays, prior to attending the course. The instructor recommends the Folger paperback edition, as it is readily available online and at Barnes and Noble. Instructor: Don Sugg, OLLI Member Wednesdays • 4/1, 4/8 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C129 Price: $18 for members • $36 for nonmembers

(286) Writing Our Personal Histories

Experience your own history through writing the memories of your parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents. (287) PEANUT 100: Beginning Ukulele

Is the guitar too hard? Is the piano too heavy to lug around? Learn to play the ukulele with the founder and leader of the Saginaw Ukulele Gurus and Rookies (SUGAR). The key to learning anything is having fun in the process and that will be the primary objective of this class. There will be a limited number of ukuleles available for in-class use. Email Johnny at peanutuke@ gmail.com with any questions. Access to the course curriculum via the Internet is provided as part of the class fee. Instructor: Johnny Hunt, Ukulele Guru Wednesdays • 3/4, 3/11, 3/18, 3/25, 4/1, 4/8 • 10-11:30 a.m. Location: C140 Price: $32 for members • $64 for non-members

(288) Michigan Rock and Roll – Part 1: Roots, Rockabilly and the Birth of Motown Beginning with a series of important events that include the growth of the automobile industry, the Great Depression and World War II, the course will examine the factors that helped make Michigan one of the leading centers of the Rock & Roll movement. Drawing from a variety of musical styles including blues, country, gospel, R&B, jazz, Latin and pop influences, the state became a melting pot in which these disparate genres came together to form a distinctive new music. The class will examine the Michigan-based record labels and important songs from this early period, as well as the lives and careers of a wide variety artists including: John Lee Hooker, Bill Haley, Aretha Franklin, Jackie Wilson, Hank Ballard, Jack Scott, Johnny & The Hurricanes, Marv Johnson, Little Willie John and Smokey Robinson. Instructor: Gary Johnson, OLLI Member Wednesdays • 2/5, 2/12, 2/19, 2/26 • 1-3 p.m. Location: C129 Price: $32 for members • $64 for non-members

(289) Jazz Journey

To today’s music listeners, smooth jazz is a much-maligned genre and it doesn’t look like the situation is going to change anytime soon. That’s unfortunate because many of the key artists and performers are supremely gifted instrumentalists and vocalists whose talents deserve recognition. This class will utilize PowerPoint slides, videos and handouts to describe the reasons that the grooves these musicians make are denigrated as “dinner jazz,” why ardent jazz purists look down upon smooth jazz music and list those outlets where smooth jazz fans can still enjoy the music. Instructor: Kelly Currie, M.A., SVSU Fridays 4/3, 4/10, 4/17, 4/24 • 1-3 p.m. Location: C140 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

We will address more challenging issues such as suicide, euthanasia, capital punishment, war, near death experience, etc. These and other topics should lead to some very expansive conversations. Most people are familiar with newspaper horoscopes and can name their “Sun Sign.” Few people, however, can name their “Moon Sign,” shown in their natal chart, a unique map of the heavens based on their date, time and place of birth. Workshop participants will learn about the influence of Luna, that mysterious earthly satellite that makes a complete revolution every 2829 days. The instructor will present general information of the influence of the Moon through her 12 signs and eight phases. Workshop participants will be asked to provide their date, place and time of birth (if known) at the time of registration. Each person will receive a copy of their natal chart and personalized written analysis of their moon sign and lunar phase, which they may or may not choose to share with the group.
