Wednesday, May 8 A Thousand Letters Home: One WWII Soldier’s Story of War, Love and Life Teresa Irish, Author and Speaker

In 2006, after the death of her father, Aarol “Bud” Irish, Teresa Irish opened the Army trunk that had resided in the family home her entire life. There, nestled in row after row, were her Dad’s nearly 1,000 letters from WWII. Read only by him over the past six decades, the letters were postmarked from November 1942 to December 1945. The fragile and yellowed pages were written to Bud’s parents and the sweetheart who would later become his wife, Elaine Marie Corbat. Teresa used those letters and other sources to write A Thousand Letters Home. Hear Teresa’s positive, life-affirming message of “the journey of the letters” at this monthly meeting.

Wednesday, June 12 Confessions of a Talk Show Host

Andy is also a speech teacher and forensic team coach at Northwood University.

Wednesday, August 7 Exploring the Wildlife on Isle Royale National Park

Phil Stephens, Senior Naturalist, Chippewa Nature Center Isle Royale’s claim to fame seems to be its wolves, although for most folks who visit this national park in Lake Superior, moose provide a more common thrill. Phil Stephens, a former biologist of the Isle Royale Wolf Ecology Study, will share his experiences and insights through a slide program which will depict the park’s varied ecosystems, as well as his personal encounters with wolves and moose and an update on the wolves’ status. Here is your chance to visit this wonderful northern wilderness without enduring a long ferry ride and the voracious mosquitoes!

Four Unique Authors: Part II (341)

Spend the summer with some literary treasurers: wonderful books you may have overlooked. Start with Elizabeth von Arnim’s Vera, which relates not only the story of Vera (who has mysteriously died), but of a selfabsorbed man and a suspicious aunt. The next book is Queen Lucia by I.F. Benson: the first in a series of satires about the pretensions of middle-class life in Britain decades ago. Sweltering July’s book is Ann Beattie’s Chilly Scenes of Winter, which tells the story of love-smitten Charles, the young woman he worships from afar, and his friend Sam. The final selection is Serena by Ron Rash, which deals with a newly married couple who travel to the North Carolina mountains in 1929 to create a timber empire, ruthlessly killing or vanquishing those who fall out of favor. All books are available inexpensively from Alibris. Read each book by the dates listed, and join obsessed reader Rose Kohut in lively discussions each month.

Mrs. Dalloway: A Close Look at a British Classic (344)

History & Philosophy of God (346)

Now that we have a solid foundation in the 2500 year philosophical debate concerning Free Will and Determinism, we will turn our attention to the prescriptive questions of the debate. For example, if we believe that Determinism is true and Free Will false, should we consider the ethics of holding people morally responsible for their actions, what about punishment, etc.? Dr. Nichol’s DVDs will guide us through the ethical, emotional, and psychological consequences of accepting Casual Determinism and rejecting Free Will. Since this is a philosophical question, the discussion will not lead to an “absolute” but will tickle your mind to consider the merits of both positions. The class will be led by OLLI member Ron Taylor.

Join OLLI member Steve Parkhurst for an interactive discussion about Virginia Wolf’s classic novel which follows a day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway, an upper class married Englishwoman, whose inner life exists in a state of continuous tension. She is torn between the boring conventional existence she has chosen to lead, and thoughts of what might have been, had she accepted the marriage proposal of the Bohemian Peter Walsh. Please purchase and read the book prior to the first session and come prepared for lively discussion. Wednesdays: July 31, August 7 & 14 • 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Price: $22 Members; $44 Non-Members Room: Curtiss 129

Watching Movies With Plato: Ethical Themes in Films (345)

This course is dedicated to the discussion of ethical topics as presented in contemporary films. In Plato’s dialogues, Socrates claims that an unexamined life is not worth living. This then leads to the ultimate question, how ought we live? Today, compared to the Dialogues, film is an even more powerful force shaping our cultural and social ideals. In this class, contemporary films will be viewed and discussed to examine their ethical themes. Our films will include Groundhog Day, The Life of Pi, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and Hope Springs. Discussion will be led by OLLI member, Larry Kammer, who has worked in health care and higher education.

Drummond Island’s Part in the War of 1812 (347)

This three-session class led by local author Jill Brumwell begins with Native Americans and their introduction to Europeans in the 1600s and concludes with the final episode in the War of 1812. Though peace was reached on December 24, 1814, the struggle of the Old Northwest Territory didn’t end until November 16, 1828. For thirteen years after the Peace Treaty, the British resided on Drummond Island. You will be fascinated with the tales of deserters, the mysterious disappearance of a wealth of gold concealed in an iron kettle, and the descriptions of 25 canoes arriving from Mackinac Island. The class will be based on Jill’s latest book Drummond Island’s Part in the War of 1812. Books will be available for purchase.

The Two Lives of William Clements: Industrialist and Bibliomaniac (348)

Experiencing Rome: A Visual Exploration of Antiquity’s Greatest Empire (350)

In Bay City, William Clements is remembered as the owner and manager of Industrial Works (known after 1930 as Industrial Brownhoist) which at the beginning of the 20th century was the community’s largest employer. It manufactured the world’s largest construction cranes and heavy lifting equipment. Throughout the rest of the U.S. and Europe, however, he was revered by academics and historians as one of the foremost collectors of antiquarian books, original early-American documents and rare maps. In this course, retired Bay City attorney Robert Sarow will discuss Clements’ remarkable accomplishments in both arenas. The first class will focus on Clements the industrialist, and the second session will examine the establishment of the Clements Library in Ann Arbor and its exceptional collection of rare books and early American historical documents.

The ancient Roman world, which lasted more than 1,000 years, spanned three continents at its height. Because only a few of the millions in that world actually knew Latin, ancient Rome was organized around what one could SEE. Dr. Stephen Tuck, a professor of classics and the history of art at Miami University, is the lecturer in the Great Courses DVDs used in this class. OLLI member Barb Mitchell, herself a Latin and Greek major, will be your facilitator and will supplement the series with other DVDs from the TV series Rome. This session covers lectures 13-18, entitled Death on Display. Topics discussed include amphitheaters, gladiators and their contests, animal hunts, prisoner executions and Christian martyrdom. New class members will have access to the previously viewed DVDs. Thursdays: July 18, 25, August 1 & 8 • 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: Curtiss 129

The Age of Reagan (351)

History of Historic Preservation in Saginaw (349)

Since the end of his second term in January 1989, Ronald Reagan’s place as one of our most significant presidents has solidified. What were his accomplishments? What did he not achieve? In this class, consideration will be given to the beliefs, influences, and experiences that formed him and explain the direction of his administration. Session one will cover the early years, including Hollywood and pre-presidential political activity, session two the election of 1980 and domestic policy, session three foreign policy and national security, and the last session will cover Reagan’s last years and his legacy. The class will be led by Northwood University history professor John Pafford.

Saginaw has a rich history, but many of our grand old buildings have seen better days. However, historical preservation efforts persist and some buildings every year undergo improvements. In the first session of this class you will learn about the history of local preservation efforts, the basics of preservation, and preservation terminology. The second session will be a walking tour of the west side where you will tour some buildings. The final session will be a tour of Hill House on Jefferson. You will see first-hand the preservation efforts which are underway and the challenges that are being faced. The class will be led by Tom Trombley, deputy director of the Castle Museum. At some point Les Tinknell (a local architect) and Greg Branch (Saginaw’s mayor) will join the class. You will receive details regarding where to meet the group for the second and third week tours during the first session.

The Resurgence and Evolution of American Militia Groups (353)

Current Events

Militia groups are older than the United States. In the last 30 years, these groups have evolved. They have become more militant and related to various splinter political parties and movements. After a decade of decline, these groups are back and growing. Do they pose a threat? Or are they simply organizations of patriotic citizens exercising their freedom of assembly and speech? This course will explore the current status of militia groups. You might be surprised to learn how active they are in your own backyard. This course will be led by Jim Johnson, a political science professor and attorney.

Drone and Robotic Warfare Technology (352)

Fridays: August 2, 9 & 16 • 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Price: $22 Members; $44 Non-Members Room: Curtiss 129

Of late the media has been dominated with news of how our government is using drone technology in advanced warfare. Specifically, our government has used unmanned drones to kill Al Qaeda operatives who are U.S. citizens in the Middle East. These vehicles are flown from bases operated by the CIA and military in Virginia and Nevada. This course will explore the legal and ethical issues involved with “remote robotic” warfare. We will also look at advanced robotic technology of which the general public is not aware. Ask yourself: How would you feel about China using an unmanned drone to execute a Chinese dissident living in California? What if a few Americans died as “collateral damage” in the process? The possibilities of this new technology are endless. This timely class will be led by Jim Johnson, a political science professor and attorney.

Fun With Ventriloquism (356)

Spaghetti Factory (354)

Do you wonder how ventriloquists can speak for their puppet/figure without moving their lips? Here’s your chance to learn some simple techniques that will prepare you to entertain your family and friends. OLLI member Virgil Norgrove will lead the class. He and his figure will begin by entertaining you with a demonstration. Then he’ll teach you a couple of tricks you can try and practice. Materials will be provided so you can make your own sock puppet, or bring your own puppet/figure from home.

Roll up your sleeves and learn how to make pasta! We’ll make spaghetti, fettuccini and ravioli in SVSU’s kitchen. We’ll stuff the ravioli with different fillings, top them with various sauces and then sample the yummy results. Along with the pasta, we’ll have salad, bread sticks and a fun dessert. You’ll also learn food handling and kitchen safety tips. The class will be led by Kelly VanConett, Executive Chef at SVSU. Learn Nuclear Science with Marbles (355)

The Future of Gardening (357)

MSU’s National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) is one of the world’s leading rare isotope research facilities. How do researchers study atomic nuclei that are too small to see, exist for less than a second, and can’t be found on Earth? You’ll learn with model “marble nuclei” – accelerating, smashing, and studying the pieces left over. Zach Constan, the NSCL Outreach Coordinator, will share information about the exciting developments in nuclear science.

The way we grow our fruits and vegetables is changing every day. Home gardeners and farmers are depending more on hi-tech gadgets, new materials and advanced skills and techniques. In this class, you will learn about some neat low-cost and innovative techniques which are on the horizon. Part of the class will be in the classroom and part of the class will be in the NEW SVSU greenhouse. The class will be led by Ed Meisel, the SVSU Greenhouse Director, chemistry lecturer and part time farmer who is “outstanding in his fields.”
