STUDY ABROAD MYTHS

Study abroad participants must speak another language.

Studying abroad is not relevant to my future career.

Students are NOT required to speak a second language to study abroad. Most programs offer English-taught courses even in non-English speaking countries.

Employers are increasingly realizing the value of candidates with the maturity, flexibility, and inter-cultural competence developed during studying abroad. In our global economy, international experience will help students be competitive in the job market.

Study abroad is not affordable. Many programs are similar in cost to a semester at SVSU. Some programs are more affordable while others are considerably more expensive. Financial aid, scholarships, loans, and grants can help cover the cost of study abroad programs.

Studying abroad will delay my graduation.

Study abroad is not for non-traditional students. The Study Abroad Office is committed to helping students find a program that accommodates time constraints and family/professional obligations. Many non-traditional students choose to participate in faculty-led programs, which range from one to three weeks in duration.

Careful program and course selection allow a student to stay on track with degree progress. Students should talk to their study abroad advisor and an academic advisor about making an academic plan.

WORDS OF WISDOM Jeralyn Glod

Sophomore, BSN – Nursing China, Spring 2019: Faculty-Led “Study abroad allowed me to learn about my future career, but also about myself. I was able to grow as a person as I took on a culture, a language and a region I had never experienced before. I grew team building skills with a group of students I had never met before and communication skills even with a language barrier in the way. The biggest aspect of personal growth I noticed was the way I was able to maintain professionalism even in an environment I was uncomfortable in at first.”

5

Saginaw Valley State University • 2015 - 2016

Elizabeth Kennedy

Sophomore, BA – Professional & Technical Writing Ireland, Spring Break 2019 Study Abroad 101 “My program allowed me the ability to experience a new country in an enjoyable and immersive way. I was encouraged to not only enjoy the country, but also learn its customs, culture, and history. It surprised me how similar other countries are to my own and made me more comfortable with the idea of exploring new places and communicating with new people.”

CHOOSING A PROGRAM There are a number of program features to consider when browsing through program options. Although students are responsible for choosing their study abroad program, staff and peer advisors are available to offer guidance. Visit SVSU Study Abroad for an advising session. Appointments recommended.

To help narrow things down, consider what the program package offers, based on: • Program Type • Destination • Language of Instruction • Housing Options • Excursions • Academic Fit • Service-Learning Opportunities • Internship Opportunities

Maria Raab

Junior, BA – Spanish Costa Rica, Summer 2018: ISA “I learned a lot about Costa Rican culture and more about the colloquial language used there. I was even able adjust my hearing for the Costa Rican accent. The benefits of studying abroad are endless. I was able to actually use Spanish every day and I was able to figure out situations and travel with confidence.”

Allison Hookey

CONTENTS

Junior, BS – Biochemistry Multi-Country Europe Winter Break 2019: CISabroad “I believe there are many benefits to studying abroad. The most important, in my opinion, is to see the world outside of the US. I think here in the US we tend to view ourselves as superior to other countries, which is not necessarily true, and I think studying abroad can open our eyes to that. From this trip, I believe I grew both personally and professionally. The trip pushed me out of my comfort zone and caused me to grow as a person. I am now better at meeting and interacting in a professional manner with a group of strangers.”

WORDS OF James Connolly

Senior, BA – Criminal Justice Taiwan, Winter 2018: Ming Chuan University “After studying in Taiwan, I feel more knowledgeable about Asian culture, history and society. I would have never experienced that without going abroad. Personally, I think everyone should study abroad because it opens your mind and bridges cultures which makes you a more tolerant person. Also, being in a foreign country and rarely talking to other Americans makes you more aware of your own values.”

CONTENTS

Hailey Weaver

Senior, BA – Graphic Design Spain, Yearlong 20182019: University of Salamanca “Studying abroad for my second time in Spain was the best decision I could have made! I am so glad I chose the University of Salamanca program because it was so cheap and I learned a TON. I loved all my teachers. I arrived speaking almost no Spanish and even though my teachers didn’t speak English, I somehow managed to understand and learn. They were always so helpful and supportive. I would love to go back to the university in the future to continue learning the language!”

WISDOM Grace Berens

Junior, BS – Public Health Nepal, Winter Break 2019: Faculty-Led “This was my first time being outside of the United States and it was the first time I had travelled without my family, so I was pretty stinking nervous about it, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me. I loved it and I know at some point I will want to go back! I would encourage students who are looking into study abroad to be willing to go somewhere totally different than what they were originally thinking. The anticipation of going somewhere that not many people would consider when they think of a study abroad experience made it that much better.“ Saginaw Valley State University • svsu.edu/studyabroad

ACADEMICS ABROAD The Study Abroad Office encourages and recommends that students talk to their academic advisor and study abroad advisor about how study abroad fits into their academic plan. Students should not limit themselves to English-speaking destinations! Most programs offer courses taught in English even in countries where English is not the primary language.

SVSU Faculty-Led Programs

What requirements can I fulfill abroad?

SVSU Partnerships/ Non-SVSU Programs

While abroad, students are able to take courses that will fulfill: • Major requirements • Minor requirements • General Education requirements • University requirements • Electives

Students participating in a faculty-led program will register for SVSU courses. Students will earn a grade and courses will appear on their SVSU transcript immediately upon completion of the program.

Students participating in a partnership or non-SVSU program will either register for courses that have been approved or will go through a course approval process. This process involves having courses evaluated and approved by the appropriate departments.

FUNDING STUDY ABROAD

How do I fund my program? Students typically fund study abroad through a combination of financial aid, scholarships, grants, loans, and personal funds. Study abroad costs vary depending on the program a student selects. While some programs are more expensive, the majority of programs are similar to what you would spend at SVSU and some may even be less. With research and early planning, study abroad can be affordable. For detailed information about program costs, visit svsu.edu/studyabroad. Students can use their SVSU financial aid award toward the cost of a study abroad program. Please contact your study abroad advisor or financial aid for more information.

STUDY ABROAD 101

New to study abroad? The study abroad 101 programs were developed for students who have never left the country before and are looking for a glimpse of what it would be like to study abroad. These programs teach students the basics of international travel. A representative from the Study Abroad Office is present to support program participants from the time they check in for their international flight to the time they collect their luggage back in the U.S. Students have support moving through immigration and customs, navigating a foreign city, and immersing themselves in a new culture. The Study Abroad 101 programs are non-credit, which keeps cost low. Students who complete one of these programs receive a $500 scholarship to study abroad a second time. Gain the confidence in yourself to travel the world!

Student teaching abroad offers SVSU student teachers the option of adding a cross-cultural learning and teaching experience to their resumé. Student teachers typically spend the first eight weeks of teaching in Michigan and the second eight weeks at an English-medium school abroad.

STUDENT TEACHING ABROAD

You can choose placement in the following countries:

37

INDIA

Student Teaching Placement In English-speaking countries, you can expect to teach classes in your licensing areas (elementary education, secondary mathematics, visual arts, and so on). In non-English speaking countries, your focus will be working with your school’s foreign language teachers to provide instruction in conversational and written English. If you happen to be fluent in your host country’s native language, you may have the opportunity to teach classes in your licensing area. Most participating schools, however, value the program because they want to expose students to native English speakers.
