letter from the commissioner

letter from the commissioner THE SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE looks back at the 201516 academic year as one of the most historical seasons in our league’s history, spotlighted by achievements on and off the field. This season, the Conference along with ESPN and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) ushered in the first ever Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl. The Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl, which showcases the heritage, legacy, pageantry and tradition of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), pits the conference champion from the MEAC against the SWAC. In 2015, MEAC champion North Carolina A&T State University defeated SWAC champion Alcorn State University 41-34 in front of over 35,000 fans. Once again, the SWAC was named the best-attended football league in the NCAA Div. I- Football Championship Series (FCS). An improvement by an average of 42 fans, the SWAC averaged 12,823 in attendance at each of its 51 home football contests. The Conference outnumbered the Missouri Valley Conference by 1,907 in attendance, despite playing 10 less total games in its league. The Big Sky Conference finished third with an average of 9,977. Our league continues to stay competitive as seven of our 10 member institutions captured conference titles. The year kicked off with Grambling State (men’s) and Alabama State (women’s) managing championships in cross country. Howard earned its second consecutive championship in its second season with the Conference, while Jackson State secured the crown in volleyball. Alcorn State ran away with back-to-back SWAC titles in football, earning a berth into the first annual Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl. Texas Southern (men’s) and Alabama State (women’s) captured titles in indoor track and field followed by Southern collecting the title in men’s basketball and Alabama State earning back-to-back championships in women’s basketball. Jackson State was crowned champion in bowling as well as men’s tennis, while Alcorn State’s women’s tennis team registered a title win. Texas Southern earned another outdoor track and field crown, while men’s and women’s golf, women’s outdoor track and field, softball and baseball were won by Alabama State – seeing its first titles in softball and baseball. With eight conference championships, Alabama State accepted its third consecutive James Frank Commissioner’s Cup. ASU also received the Sadie Magee/Barbara Jacket Award and the C.D. Henry Award. The last time the institution won all three awards was during the 2013-14 season. When we speak of the league’s national exposure, we have to credit several television networks, SWAC Digital Network, and swac.org for bringing the competition to the homes of our loyal fans. For the year, 22 football games were televised during the regular season with 12 airing on the ESPN networks. In addition CSS, Comcast SportsNet, Fox SportsSouth, CSN Houston, and NBC carried at least one of the remaining games. In addition, eight regular season basketball games were covered by a television network including: CSS, Fox Sports and six games on ESPNU. ESPN continued to partner with the conference airing the championships for volleyball, football, bowling, softball, men and women’s basketball and baseball. Also, during the regular season, ESPNU was able to highlight two of our premier programs in softball - Texas Southern vs. Mississippi Valley State. The growth of the SWAC Digital Network continues to enhance the brand with more than 33,000 viewers watching a SWAC game on their mobile devices, laptop or desktop computer. Within that number, 63 percent were new visitors to SDN. The addition of SDN helped lift the number of views to our primary resource swac.org. Our home website had more than one million views resulting in an increase of nearly 250,000 people who logged on to our primary resource. As the SWAC continues to grow, we have to thank our football championship and basketball tournament title sponsor, Toyota, for its commitment to our student-athletes and fans. We would also like to salute Russell Athletic, Nike and Coca-Cola for their support and partnership. Lastly, we would like to thank our fans, student-athletes, their parents, and our member institutions for a remarkable 2015-16 season. Sincerely,

Duer Sharp Southwestern Athletic Conference Commissioner

SWAC FOOTBALL

Alcorn State

HOUSTON, Texas – A crowd of 40,352 witnessed a record-setting day by Alcorn State as the Braves prevailed 49-21 over Grambling State to claim the 2015 Southwestern Athletic Conference Football Championship, becoming the first repeat champion since the 20002002 Grambling State Tigers. The Braves rewrote the record books offensively, setting new SWAC Championship Game all-time highs in total yards of offense (613), rushing yards (411) and points scored (49). The defending champions struck first as a 84-yard sprint to paydirt by SWAC Championship Game Offensive MVP Darryan Ragsdale opened the scoring. With the run – his third attempt of the game – Ragsdale broke the SWAC Championship Game record for most rushing yards as well as the longest rush in the game’s history. He ended the day with 191 yards on the ground. A 24-yard pick-six by Alcorn State cornerback and SWAC Championship Game Defensive MVP Warren Gatewood on GSU’s next drive gifted the Braves a two-score lead. Grambling State responded on its next turn, with a drive that ended with 14-yard touchdown run by Johnathan Williams on the first snap of the second quarter. The Braves responded with a six-play, 72-yard drive that Lenorris Footman capped with an 11-yard scoring toss to SWAC Newcomer of the Year Marquis Warford. Grambling State returned serve as Williams dropped in a 24-yard scoring toss to Verlan Hunter to punctuate an eight-play, 96-yard march with 9:14 left in the second quarter.

touchdown with 7:53 left in the game with a 1–yard plunge by Jestin Kelly, and Alcorn State put up the final score of the night with 4:03 remaining on a 37-yard touchdown run by Warford, who scored three times in the game and accounted for 200 all-purpose yards, thirdmost in SWAC Championship Game history. Gatewood picked off three passes, which tied the SWAC Championship Game record for most interceptions. Footman threw for 202 yards on 15-of-24 passing and three scores. He also rushed for 101 yards and another score. Williams was held in check to the tune of 225 yards on 19-of-38 passing. He also rushed for 34 yards to lead the Tigers. Chester Rogers caught seven passes for 61 yards, and Guy Stallworth made 15 tackles, one shy of the SWAC Championship Game record. The attendance figure was the thirdmost in SWAC Championship Game history, as well as the most in the game’s history since it moved to NRG Stadium and the most since 2007.

With the Braves up 28-14, the teams traded turnovers in the third quarter, when a fumble by Grambling’s Martez Carter was scooped up by Alcorn State’s Eric Foster, who returned it to the GSU 16-yard line. However, a holding penalty wiped out a Ragsdale score and on the next play, Grambling State’s Troy Roach forced a fumble that was recovered by Derwyn Butler to stave off a potential score. Gatewood ended that drive with a pick, but the Braves couldn’t take advantage of it. On the ensuing punt, a muffed catch was pounced on by Alcorn State, setting the Braves up at GSU’s 28 yard line. Seven plays later, the Braves cashed in thanks to a 9-yard touchdown scamper by Footman that put them ahead 35-14 with 2:31 left in the quarter. Alcorn State added to its lead with a five-yard pitch and catch from Footman to Corbin Johnson. Grambling State responded with a 2015-16 southwestern athletic conference - 12

SWAC VOLLEYBALL

Jackson State

BATON ROUGE, La. – Jackson State won the 2015 SWAC Volleyball Tournament Championship with a 3-2 (25-14, 1725, 25-23, 25-13) win over defending champion Alabama State at the Clifford Seymour Gymnasium Sunday. It is the third title in five years for the Tigers (15-21), and the first since 2012. In a battle of the top two seeds in the SWAC Eastern Division, it was the top-seeded Tigers that roared out of the gate with a 13-3 start to the match. Alabama State (21-15) never mounted a consistent offensive response – the Hornets committed nine errors as opposed to seven kills in the period – as the Tigers cruised to an openingset triumph. The roles switched in set two, as the Hornets opened things up on a 9-3 scoring run.

The Tigers were led by Taija Thomas, who notched 14 kills and three digs. Tournament MVP Mikayla Rolle added 13 kills, three blocks and two service aces. Alexsis Ford picked up 13 putaways as well, and Jenna Siddiqui accounted for 11 kils, 31 assists and six digs. Alabama State’s Myla Marshall picked up 14 kills and six blocks. Kori Kutsch put up 24 helpers and five digs. Rachel Smith had eight kills. Jackson State clinched an automatic berth in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament, and will find out its opening-round opponent during the tournament selection show, which will be Nov. 29 at 8 p.m. on ESPNU.

Despite spurts of offense from Jackson State, 11 errors in the set derailed any attempt at a sustained comeback, and the quick start was enough to fuel Alabama State through the frame. A back-and-forth third started to lean in favor of the Tigers when they earned the advantage with six straight points to snap a 9-9 tie. Jackson State looked poised to wrap up the period, but Alabama State reeled off four straight points to cut JSU’s lead to 19-17. The Tigers halted the rally with one of their own and held off a late ASU charge to claim the set. In the fourth set, the Tigers broke a 6-6 game open with a 13-4 run that ultimately powered the Tigers to the title. 2015-16 southwestern athletic conference - 14

SWAC men’s basketball

Southern

HOUSTON, Texas – An Adrian Rodgers tip-in with just over 16 seconds left lifted Southern to a 54-53 victory over Jackson State and the 2016 SWAC Men’s Basketball Tournament Championship. The tip-in came just after Raeford Worsham made a go-ahead lay-up with 33 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Rodgers rebounded a Jared Sam shot attempt and after missing his first tip-in, he was able to get his put back to fall on the second try. JKST’s Chace Franklin’s three attempt and Janarius Middleton’s ensuing put back were no good, giving the Jaguars their ninth SWAC Tournament championship and – under the guidance of Coach Roman Banks -- their second conference crown in three years. After trailing for much of the game, Jackson State used an 11-2 run to go ahead by one at the midway point of the final half. Trelun Banks took the lead back for SUBR with a jumper on the next possession, and Southern held a slim lead until a 9-2 run by the Tigers put them ahead 48-42 with less than four minutes left. The Jaguars were able to get within one possession with 2:40 left, and subesquently tied it with a Banks three-ball on their next turn with the ball. Paris Collins buried a corner three to put JKST ahead 51-48 with just over a minute and a half left. SUBR was able to claw back in it, as Christopher Hyder free throws made the game 52-51, setting the stage for the final moments. Banks, who was named tournament MVP, led all scorers with 19 points. Shawn Prudhomme added 10 points, and Rodgers scored seven points to go with 11 boards. Jackson State was led by all-tournament performer Worsham, who notched a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Paris Collins added 11 points and seven rebounds. 2015-16 southwestern athletic conference - 20

Alabama State

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Alabama State staved off a late comeback attempt by Texas Southern to claim the program’s first Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Championship by a score of 7-5. The win also completes the first perfect record in conference play in the history of the league, with the Hornets amassing a 28-0 (including tournament) record against conference foes this year. Both sides traded scoreless first innings beforeTexas Southern threatened in the second. Although consecutive walks and a hit batter by Hornets starter Angel Alicea eventually led to runners loading the bags, Alicea sat down Kamren Dukes to escape the jam. The Hornets got their bats going in the third at the expense of TSU starter Larry Romero (6 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 4 K), opening the frame with back-to-back singles by Diandre Amion and Carlos Ocasio. Tournament MVP Dillon Cooper (4-for-4, 2 R) then tagged a pitch over the right field wall for a three-run homer to give ASU (38-15) the early advantage.

the seventh allowed another Hornets run to score. In the eighth, the Tigers showed some life via a solo shot by pinch-hitter Jose Cabreja off of Tyler Howe, who came in to relieve Alicea. A hit batter brought in Joseph Camacho to close the deal. In the ninth, TSU tried to claw back into the game, getting runners on first and second. A throwing error by the Hornets’ Ray Hernandez allowed another Tigers run. Christian Sanchez followed with a RBI single that brought the Tigers within two runs, but Camacho was able to regroup and finish the save and hand the Hornets the title.

In the fourth, Texas Southern again put runners on first and second, but Alicea fanned Joel Rosario-Alicea and and Dukes to keep the Tigers (24-26) off the board, who stranded eight runners over the first five innings. Alicea carried a no-hitter into the fifth, but it was broken up by a Dukes single. However, Ryan Lazo lined out into a double play to send it to the bottom of the inning, where the Hornets extended their lead with a RBI groundout from Ray Hernandez and a RBI ground-rule double from Hunter Allen. Texas Southern got on the board with a two-run shot to right field by Blake Hicks, cutting the game to 5-2. Horace Leblanc followed with a double, and TSU eventually put runners on the corners. Alicea (6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 9 K) was able to avoid further damage by striking out Lazo to end the top of the sixth inning. Cooper followed up with a RBI double to the right center warning track that scored Yamil Pagan, but Ocasio was tagged out at the plate during the play to end the inning. SWAC softball

Alabama State

IRONDALE, Ala. – Behind five home runs, Alabama State won its first-ever Southwestern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament Championship, downing defending champion Texas Southern 18-8 in the final round. For the Lady Hornets (28-25), it was the avenging of a defeat at the hands of the Tigers (27-18) in last year’s tournament final.

Boggess and Wilson (2-for-4, 3 RBI) hit back-to-back solo shots to extend the Hornets’ lead. Aleesa Yanez also left the yard for Alabama State. Maddie Phelps (18-11) threw 3.1 innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs to earn the win. Tyra Williams (7-6) got the loss.

The 18 runs is the most by a team in the finals since Mississippi Valley State put up 16 runs in 2009, and six ALST players collected at least two RBI in the game. The scoring started early for Alabama State, as tournament MVP Kendall Core (3-for-5, 4 RBI, 2 R) put the Lady Hornets on the board with a two-run shot in the first. TSU got one run back in the second inning, but the Hornets opened up the game for good with a ninerun outburst, highlighted by another two-run blast from Core and two-run base hits by Laura Aguilar and Brittney Wilson. At the end of it, ALST led 11-1. Texas Southern showed signs of life in the top of the fourth, as Domonique Tello (2-for-4, R) smacked a three-run double to cut the game to 11-5. But the long ball continued to pay off for Alabama State, as Alexia

afr celebration bowl

air force reserve celebration bowl

ATLANTA, Ga. - Alcorn State University became the first

Southwestern Athletic Conference institution to be put on display at the inaugural Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl Saturday afternoon in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome against North Carolina A&T State. The 35,528 announced attendance is higher than 15 FBS bowl games last year. Four first half scoring plays in the first quarter arguably proved to be the difference as the Braves fell short 41-34. Lenorris Footman threw a 10-yard scoring pass to running back Aaron Baker in the second quarter, caught a 9-yard touchdown from wide receiver Tollette George in the third quarter, and threw an 11-yarder to George to tie it at 27-27 with 12:57 left in the game.

Khris Gardin gave A&T a quick lead on a 74-yard punt return just 1:24 into the game, and Anthony Williams returned the favor moments later with an 84-yard punt return to pull Alcorn State within 7-6. Cohen popped scoring runs of 74 and 83 yards on the Aggies’ next two possessions, and A&T pushed its lead to 24-6 when Cody Jones was good on a 45-yard field goal with 11:31 left in the first half. Alcorn State, which beat Grambling State in the SWAC championship, rallied to tie on the strength of trick plays. SWAC Football Championship MVP Darryan Ragsdale was held to 39 yards on 15 carries.

Braves wide receiver Brandon Vessell tied the game again when he threw a three yard scoring strike to tight end Brandon Campbell with 5:10 to go. Two plays later, the 5-foot-6, 173-pound Cohen took off up the middle, pulling away from multiple defenders for his third score to put the Aggies ahead for good. Alcorn State did not go quietly, but after reaching first-andgoal at the A&T 9-yard line, Footman threw four straight incompletions. Tarik Cohen rushed for 295 yards and touchdowns of 83, 74 and 73 yards for A&T. The Celebration Bowl MVP’s 73-yard scoring run with 4:17 left proved to be the game winner. Alcorn State (9-4), champion of the SWAC, was led by Footman. He passed for 144 yards and two scores, rushed for 62 yards, and caught a nine yard touchdown pass as the Braves rallied from a 24-6 second-quarter deficit to tie the game twice, at 27-all and 34-all. 2015-16 southwestern athletic conference - 42

2015 swac hall of fame

SWAC CHAMPIONSHIPS / SWAC HALL OF FAME INDUCTION

HOUSTON, Texas – The Southwestern Athletic Conference formally inducted seven of its most significant athletes, coaches and administrators into the SWAC Hall of Fame Thursday night at the J.W. Marriott in Houston. The annual reception served as the catalyst for championship weekend in leading up to the 2015 SWAC Football Championship game.

led the nation in scoring at 27 points per game.

The newest hall of fame class consisted of Selma, Ala. Mayor and former coordinator of SWAC officials George Patrick Evans, Tommy Gibbs, Sr. (Alcorn State), Kevin Granger (Texas Southern), Perry Harrington (Jackson State), Maurice “Mo” Hurst (Southern), Alicia Pete (Prairie View A&M) and Steven Rogers, Sr. (Alabama State)

Harrington was one of the most electric running backs in the nation as part of the Wishbone offense of SWAC coaching legend W.C. Gorden. He earned two All-SWAC selections for the Tigers in 1978 and 1979 as well.

Each inductee had the chance to share past stories and show gratitude to those that helped them during their playing and coaching days. Prior to a career in politics, Evans served the SWAC for three decades (1979-2009) in an officiating capacity. In addition to becoming one of the conference’s most seasoned officials, Evans also spent more than a decade coordinating officials for SWAC men’s and women’s basketball. Gibbs earned his place in conference lore as one of the great defenders in Alcorn State history. In his collegiate career, Gibbs racked up 300 tackles, 27 sacks, six picks and three fumble recoveries. He was a first-team All-SWAC selection and was a member of the Braves’ 1979 conference championship team. As one of the most dominant scorers of his era, Texas Southern alum Kevin Granger went down as one of the greatest basketball players in conference history, leading the Tigers to the SWAC Tournament Championship in 1994 and 1995 – he won tournament MVP honors in 1994 – and in 1996, he

Granger, who was a two-time all-SWAC and Black College All-American selection, said the best part of the night was sharing the merit with his closest loved ones. Currently, Granger serves his alma mater as its athletics operations manager.

Hurst parlayed a stunning athletic career at Southern, into an equally impressive seven-year career in the NFL as a member of the New England Patriots. Hurst was named to the NFL All-Rookie honors and was eventually selected to the Patriots’ all-decade team in the 1990s, earning the distinction of All-Pro during the 1995 season. As one of the great athletes and coaching pioneers in Panthers history, Pete has experienced success in nearly every athletic venue one could imagine. Even with the multiple all-conference and all-tournament selections as well as the litany of division and conference championships won as volleyball coach, Pete considered her most recent distinction one of the most meaningful. Pete currently serves as the Senior Woman Administrator at Prairie View A&M. Rogers was SWAC Player of the Year twice en route to earning All-American distinction in his junior and senior seasons. He went on to transition from that to coaching and athletic administration, where he has been a part of three separate SWAC championship teams in basketball and football. Rogers is currently an assistant coach for the Alabama State men’s basketball team.

Canessa Swanson player & hitter of the year

Maddie Phelps pitcher of the year

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southwestern Athletic Conference has announced the 2016 All-Conference Softball teams and yearly award winners, as voted on by the league’s coaches and sports information directors. Jackson State infielder Canessa Swanson was named the conference’s Player and Hitter of the Year. Alabama State pitcher Maddie Phelps claimed the Pitcher of the Year accolade, and fellow Hornet Charlene Castro was selected as Co-Freshman of the Year alongside Prairie View A&M’s Shelby Williams. Alcorn State hurler Paige Breal was tabbed as the SWAC Newcomer of the Year, and Lady Braves coach Josef Rankin was honored as the Coach of the Year. Swanson was ranked in the top five in nearly every offensive statistical category, batting .436 (2nd in the SWAC) on the season with 51 hits, 11 doubles and a league-leading five triples. She also led the conference in runs scored for the second-straight season (38). She is ranked 14th nationally in triples per game (.11) and 30th in the country in runs scored per game (1.06). Phelps led the SWAC in victories, posting a 16-11 record while establishing herself as the Lady Hornets’ ace in the absence of 2015 Pitcher of the Year Chelsea King. Phelps’ 3.07 ERA and .269 opponent batting average were both good for second in the conference, and she pitched a SWAC-leading 164 innings while striking out 124 batters. In Castro’s maiden season with the Hornets, the slugger posted a slash line of .380 BA/.437 OB%/.613 SLG%, raking in 52 hits and a conference-best 39 RBI to go with seven home runs and 11 doubles.

Paige Breal newcomer of the year

Williams hit .351 with 29 runs scored, 34 hits and 21 stolen bases, the latter of which led the conference. Her 0.66 steals per game ranks her No. 26 in the nation, and she committed only two errors in 42 chances (.952 FLD%). Breal’s first season with the Braves resulted in her leading the league with 154 strikeouts en route to a 12-11 record. In 159.1 innings of work, Breal posted a 3.78 ERA (4th in the SWAC), with 23 complete games in 28 appearances. She averaged 6.68 strikeouts per game. In his second season as Alcorn State’s skipper – on the heels of a 2-31 record in his first year – Rankin oversaw a significant turnaround for the Lady Braves on the diamond, guiding them to a 15-25 overall record and an 11-6 conference record, netting the No. 2 seed in the East. Swanson, Phelps and Breal were first-team selections. Joining them was Alabama State University’s Aleesa Yanez and Laura Aguilar, Alcorn State’s Taylor Hughes, Alabama A&M’s Tiana Sanders, Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Tonnay Hawkins and Texas Southern’s Briana Simpson, Krystalani Yockman and Lauren Rodriguez. Overall, Texas Southern and Alabama State led the way as both teams had six players earn all-conference honors, and Alcorn State saw three players named all-SWAC. Southern and Alabama A&M both landed two all-conference selections apiece, and Prairie View A&M, Jackson State, Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff all had one all-conference nod each.
