G U D D A H MUSIC ON THE VERGE Guddah is a young black man who grew up in Oakland California trying to make it, straight up hood, I still keep my hood ways but I try to keep them to a minimum because I have to look out for my kids. I have four little girls and I am only 22 years old. What does it mean when you say keeping your hood ways to a minimum? Because out here anything can happen, because someone will shoot you for stepping on their shoes. You can get into an incident and the outcome could be not good. Or you can just keep it cool, and just walk away because I am always thinking about going home to my little girls. They are the most important things in my life. What is your inspiration for your music? Basically, everyday life, I rap about things, people can relate too, young men who have kids, it is so much stuff out here that young men can do and make money that is bad, but I constantly have to make the conscience decision not to do it the easy way. I rap about the ladies. How would define your music and how would others define it? On my latest project, you will hear some mature music, for older people, young party music, sexy music if you are trying to get your vibe and groove on with your partner. My producer J.Rigga is and was my inspiration to stop writing and start rapping. People say my music is high energy, lyrical, and real. It's like when I am rapping, I make sure my lyrics are clear and concise and people will embrace them, my friends have told me, it makes them energetic, and they can relate to what I saying because I rap about real life. What is your mixtape about? My mixtape is called Gudda Mentality Volume I, its basically about what men think about, such as having fun, I have song called, "Just Friends" and its about a women who looks nice and you know she has man, but you still wanna get at her anyhow, but just to be friends not to take her man's place. There is Party music, and how your sipping, and medicating yourself, and just doing your thing. Then there is song called "On my Mine", which is about my youngest daughters mom, and how I be thinking about her non-stop, because I have messed up in the past, and I be thinking about her 247 and she don't even be knowing, so and I just continuously rap about and I made a song about song of the situation.

ON OUR RADAR BY RON FULCHER

Basically, my style of music is Hip-Hop and R&B. Gudda has some upcoming projects with 2Solid and a will dropping a CD soon. You can also hit Gudda up at his myspace: http://www.myspace.com/cjayofdmd )0 LP:@@:=B@BM:EF:@:SBG>'<HF H<MH;>K +)*)

ON OUR RADAR LANCE D ARREN G OODALL PHK=L KHG ?NE<A>K

Lance Darren Goodall, recently featured on Bravo Television's Real Housewives of NJ as self defense instructor at the LA Boxing which is located in Paramus, N.J while training one of the characters on the show. While Lance has gained some notoriety for his moment of fame, Lance still trains Danielle from Bravo's show Housewives of NJ, and he "says one thing people need to realize that Danielle is portrayed as a villain on television", that is why they call it television, "but in real life she is a really genuine". He also trains Danny Provenzano who also portrayed on television as a person of questionable character, but Lance says he is a "down to earth guy". Lance states, he is a professional mixed martial arts fighter. Although the sport is portrayed as very violent, in the media, he is very humble, enjoys being around people, takes his client's training very seriously, and relishes in seeing his clients results from his and their training and dedication to becoming better physically, mentally and spiritually. "I am very humble" and "down to earth" Lance states, however but when you get into cage "I am ready to go"! Lance got into boxing when he was about six years old, learning the sport at the Hackensack PAL in New Jersey. He started his early training with Mike Rodriguez whom he has been with since he was 10 years old. Lance has competed as a boxer in the Golden Gloves, Diamond Gloves and the Jr. Olympics. Lance says he became fascinated with the MMA as he started watching the UFC on television. As his interest became a reality, he realized that he had to learn how to "ground fight". Lance, began his journey of which wrestling and jiu-jitsu were components and necessary disciplines needed to become an effective MMA fighter. He took off 6 months from boxing to focus on becoming the best MMA fighter he could be. Once he started the ground fighting, Lance received his blue belt in about four months, which normally takes about a year on paper. After that Lance started competing, in local jiu-jitsu tournaments, shortly after he picked up two major MMA sponsors, Relentless Fightwear.com and Dogboxer.net. Lance's fight name is Lance "Venom" Goodall and he has been training for the MMA for 3 years now. His website is VenomMMA.ning.com. Lance is currently with Jamal Patterson and their team name is Renzo Gracie. We also discussed, his feelings on the MMA sport potentially becoming an Olympic event, Lance expressed excitement about the possibilities, however some reservations as to what the scoring system would be like. "Time will tell as to whether that will come to pass." As we closed our interview, Lance says "my main goal is to get into the UFC". "I train religiously day in and day out, I am basically a gym rat".

Rhapsody in Blue: The Work of Nannette Harris Sargent Johnson Gallery (Sargent Johnson Gallery) Thu, Aug 26 -- Sun, Jan 2 Gallery Hours: Tues - Sat 12 Noon - 5 p.m. "Rhapsody in Blue" features some of Nannette Harris’s beloved and popular works like: James Brown, Carlos Santana, and Tina Turner. She will also unveil her new creations like: Jimi Hendrix, Marilyn Monroe, and the African American Art & Culture Complex’s own, Sargent Johnson – of whom our gallery is named after. Nannette Harris is an African American artist born and raised in Oakland, California. She followed her passion for art and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the California College of Arts and Crafts. She has been painting for thirty-five years. Nannette’s use of color in her paintings allows the colors to show the meaning of her work. The vision for her style came in a dream, using the primary colors, blue, red, and yellow. "Blue" represents the color of our blood before it is oxygenated, "Red" represents the color of our blood after oxygenation and "Yellow" represents the aura and energy of life. She believes "Black" radiates when used with color and enjoy using the negative space, creating a touch of cubism, texture and geometric shapes in her paintings.

NANNETTE HARRIS

It is of interest to note that Nannette has been very environmentally conscious of the materials she uses, being called the "Green artist" that paints "Blue People". She paints and creates her artwork using recycled oil and acrylic metallic paints. She has been recycling her paints and old paint brushes that allows her to sculpt and give texture to the hair of the characters she paints. She never discards any left-over paint she uses. Therefore, her concern for the environment prompts her to be creative in re-using the materials.

El DeBarge Signs With Geffen For First Album In 16 Years by Gail Mitchell

One of the more surprising moments during the 2010 BET Awards was El DeBarge performing a medley of '80s hits by former family group DeBarge, including "All This Love," "Time Will Reveal" and the No. 3 pop crossover dance jam "Rhythm of the Night." Now the singer/songwriter is hoping to parlay that momentheralded by fans and critics alikeinto a successful comeback bid with his first album since 1994.Due Sept. 28, the aptly titled "Second Chance" not only launches DeBarge's new deal with Geffen, it also signals the artist's return after several run-ins with the law involving domestic violence and drug abuse. Having served a two-year term in California state prison following a 2008 bust for drug possession, DeBarge says he's ready to face the music.

"When I got locked up, that was my 'Oh, wow' moment," recalls DeBarge, who's managed by Pete Farmer of Kings of LA. "And the minute I stepped up to the mic after I was released, I rediscovered who I am and what I can do." Still blessed with a three-octave range, DeBarge is co-writing and co-producing songs with such collaborators as Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Babyface (who worked on DeBarge's 1994 set "Heart, Mind and Soul"), Mike City, Geffen chief Ron Fair and the Avilia Brothers. While he performed the album's title track on BET, DeBarge says a formal first single will be announced shortly. Among other tracks slated to appear on the album are "How Can You Love Me So Much, Girl?," "Serenading You" and "Switch Up the Formats," a club song with 50 Cent. "There's music to dance to and make love to, music to cry to," DeBarge says. "I'm starting from scratch, coming fresh. But my sound still embodies the same soulful, intricate harmonies."

*)/ LP:@@:=B@BM:EF:@:SBG>'<HF H<MH;>K +)*)

In addition to logging collaborative credits with DJ Quik and RZA, DeBarge has watched his back catalog covered or sampled by artists ranging from the Notorious B.I.G. to Patti LaBelle. After leaving the family act in the mid-'80s, DeBarge logged several of his own hits-including "Who's Johnny" and "Love Always"-plus guest stints on classics like Quincy Jones' 1990 No. 1, "The Secret Garden." Confessing he was nervous before being embraced by the BET audience, DeBarge has since opened for R&B singer Vivian Green and performed a surprise duet with Keri Hilson of the 1982 DeBarge family hit "I Like It" at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans. He's now taking "a chill pill from the media" and settling down in the studio to finish the album. "There's a certain missing feeling, a void out there that I'm more than happy to fill," the singer says. "Without criticizing what's out there now, I'm just going to do El DeBarge."

All 107 Black Male Seniors at Inner-City School Going to College

By Terry Shropshire The constant reminder that there are more black men in prison than on college campus is nauseating, sickening and tiring to most black people. But one all-male, all-black high school on Chicago’s South Side is countering that horrible statistic by graduating all 107 of its African American seniors and getting the young men accepted into college. The Urban Prep Academy for Young Men in Chicago’s Englewood community — one of the most notorious neighborhoods in the city — managed to get their black men accepted into 72 colleges around the nation. But you are wrong if you believe that the school was happy about graduating all their seniors or sending them to college. That’s not even close to the goal. The goal of the prep school is to get all of 107 black high school graduates to become 107 black college graduates, says Evan Lewis, Urban Prep Academy’s vice president for institutional advancement, in talking with the Chicago Tribune. "We are not just committed to getting our students through high school, we are committed to getting them through college. We are going to be a constant presence in their lives and give them the support that a lot of folks don't have when they go to college," Lewis says. What’s even more remarkable is this fact: only 4 percent of the graduates could read at their grade level when they were freshman. Moreover, 82 percent of these black males came from low-income families. But founder and CEO Tim King knew he could transform their lives. "I never had a doubt that we would achieve this goal. Every single person we hired knew from the day one that this is what we do: We get our kids in to college," King says.his is how King did it: before the male students even started their first freshman class four years ago, they were assigned a college counselor. Then they visited the esteemed Northwestern University. Also, because of their poor reading skills, they took double periods of English and “spent 72,000 more minutes in the classroom than their peers at regular CPS schools,” the Tribune reports. King says since the college graduation rate for black men is also very low, the school's counselors will provide comprehensive support throughout their college years.

U.S. Tries to Make It Easier to Wiretap the Internet By CHARLIE SAVAGE

ederal law enforcement and national security officials are preparing to seek sweeping new regulations for the Internet, arguing that their ability to wiretap criminal and terrorism suspects is “going dark” as people increasingly communicate online instead of by telephone.Essentially, officials want Congress to require all services that enable communications — including encrypted e-mail transmitters like BlackBerry, social networking Web sites like Facebook and software that allows direct “peer to peer” messaging like Skype — to be technically capable of complying if served with a wiretap order. The mandate would include being able to intercept and unscramble encrypted messages. The bill, which the Obama administration plans to submit to lawmakers next year, raises fresh questions about how to balance security needs with protecting privacy and fostering innovation. And because security services around the world face the same problem, it could set an example that is copied globally. James X. Dempsey, vice president of the Center for Democracy and Technology, an Internet policy group, said the proposal had “huge implications” and challenged “fundamental elements of the Internet revolution” — including its decentralized design. “They are really asking for the authority to redesign services that take advantage of the unique, and now pervasive, architecture of the Internet,” he said. “They basically want to turn back the clock and make Internet services function the way that the telephone system used to function.” But law enforcement officials contend that imposing such a mandate is reasonable and necessary to prevent the erosion of their investigative powers. “We’re talking about lawfully authorized intercepts,” said Valerie E. Caproni, general counsel for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. “We’re not talking expanding authority. We’re talking about preserving our ability to execute our existing authority in order to protect the public safety and national security.” Investigators have been concerned for years that changing communications technology could damage their ability to conduct surveillance. In recent months, officials from the F.B.I., the Justice Department, the National Security Agency, the White House and other agencies have been meeting to develop a proposed solution. There is not yet agreement on important elements, like how to word statutory language defining who counts as a communications service provider, according to several officials familiar with the deliberations. But they want it to apply broadly, including to companies that operate from servers abroad, like Research in Motion, the Canadian maker of BlackBerry devices. In recent months, that company has come into conflict with the governments of Dubai and India over their inability to conduct surveillance of messages sent via its encrypted service. In the United States, phone and broadband networks are already required to have interception capabilities, under a 1994 law called the Communications Assistance to Law Enforcement Act. It aimed to ensure that government surveillance abilities would remain intact during the evolution from a copper-wire phone system to digital networks and cellphones. Often, investigators can intercept communications at a switch operated by the network company. But sometimes — like when the target uses a service that encrypts messages between his computer and its servers — they must instead serve the order on a service provider to get unscrambled versions. Like phone companies, communication service providers are subject to wiretap orders. But the 1994 law does not apply to them. While some maintain interception capacities, others wait until they are served with orders to try to develop them. The F.B.I.’s operational technologies division spent $9.75 million last year helping communication companies — including some subject to the 1994 law that had difficulties — do so. And its 2010 budget included $9 million for a “Going Dark Program” to bolster its electronic surveillance capabilities. Beyond such costs, Ms. Caproni said, F.B.I. efforts to help retrofit services have a major shortcoming: the process can delay their ability to wiretap a suspect for months. *)1 LP:@@:=B@BM:EF:@:SBG>'<HF H<MH;>K +)*)

Employers, workers to pay more for health coverage BY DUKE HELFAND

Healthcare premiums paid by large U.S. employers have more than doubled over the last decade, but the costs to their employees more than tripled, a study released Monday found. And next year companies can expect healthcare costs to rise nearly 9% on average — the largest increase in five years — as they confront an aging workforce, large medical claims and changes brought by healthcare reform. The study by human resources firm Hewitt Associates found that Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco and San Diego were among the metropolitan areas nationwide where employers have experienced the largest cost increases this year."Everyone has a strong focus on costs and the need to find solutions," said Jim Winkler, a managing principal in Hewitt's healthcare business line. "It's a very serious concern." The study is based on census data and insurance information for 350 companies in Hewitt's database. The firms range in size from 1,500 employees to more than 200,000 and have accounted for nearly $52 billion in healthcare spending this year. Hewitt projects that such companies will spend $9,821 per employee on average for insurance next year, up from $9,028 this year — an 8.8% increase and more than double what they paid in 2001. Employees will be asked to contribute an average of $2,209 of the cost, a 12% increase over this year's contribution. Workers also will face higher out-of-pocket costs to see doctors, bringing their total expense on average to $4,386 — more the three times the amount they paid in 2001. Employees face higher costs as companies shift an ever-larger share of insurance premiums and healthcare costs to them. The lingering recession is affecting everyone involved, Hewitt analysts said, as companies hang on to veteran workers and defer new hiring. Older employees, in turn, have higher healthcare costs. The recently adopted healthcare reform package also is expected to drive up insurance rates and saddle employers with new costs. Hewitt cited new rules that, among other things, allow adult children to remain on their parents' health insurance plans through age 26.

The future of air travel is ... well, weird Can you imagine a plane that at a touch of a button becomes entirely transparent so passengers can have unobstructed views through the fuselage and the cabin floor at the city that lies about 40,000 feet below their feet? Well, the engineers at European aircraft maker Airbus can. The company released “The Future, by Airbus” a few months back, and even though it’s only about 14 pages long, there are some wild ideas about the future of air travel. By 2050, engineers envision self-cleaning headrests that can never be soiled, pliable seats that will modify around a passenger’s body, and holographic projections that will make a private cabin into a Japanese Zen garden. “So imagine, if you will, stepping in to your pre-selected themed cabin, relaxing into a perfectly clean, ecologically grown seat that changes shape to suit you and looking up through the transparent ceiling at the Milky Way in all its glory,” at an altitude of more than 32,000 feet, the company writes. Airbus says materials of the future will have functionality that provides transparency on command, negating the need for windows. So we’re guessing that the pilot will be able to put the plane in invisible mode. But whether or not people are going to want to see through a plane as it travels 600 miles per hour is still up in the air.

Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010 “If you take out the special interests, the entrenched groups, with any of these issues — whether it’s energy, the financial sector, or legalized marijuana — it’s always very clear what the right thing to do is,” said The Dude. He was echoing, in his way, an old truth of politics: that the best way to judge what’s really at stake in an election is to follow the money. And the source of the funds being used to dissuade Californians from legalizing pot says a lot about the end-stage hypocrisies of the arthritic war on drugs. As a societal ground-shaker, a voter-imposed act to legalize the most popular illicit drug in the United States — with about 17 million current users — will hardly bring down any of the nation’s foundations. Like most tectonic shifts, Prop 19 is long in coming, and the actual slip of the earth will not be apocalyptic.Cannabis became illegal in most states not long after alcohol was freed of the folly of Prohibition, the greatest crime-booster of the 20th century. The legalization movement, now 35 years and running, acknowledges the obvious: pot is a mildly mind-altering recreational diversion that is not worthy of having the weight, misery and money of the criminal-judicial-industrial complex against it. Of course, too many people abuse marijuana. And too many young people escape in a cannabis cloud when they should be studying calculus or kicking a soccer ball. But these cautionary notes also go for sugar, trans fats, television, computer games and a big pair of destructive legal drugs — alcohol and nicotine. And therein lies the first lesson in this potpourri: The real threat posed by Prop 19 is not from the “message” that society would send by allowing legal pot use. Talk about message: it’s impossible to escape the drugs pushed relentlessly on television — pills to help you sleep or have sex, or drinks to make you sociable. No, the threat is to the established order that controls profitable legal drugs, and to the criminal cartels who benefit from our absurd prohibition of pot. So, it’s not a bit surprising that one of the biggest contributors to the campaign against legalization is the California Beer and Beverage Distributors. Having branded their products with nearly every major American recreational ritual, Big Alcohol does not want marijuana to get a piece of that large pie of legal money spent to distract ourselves from ourselves. The other major opponents appear, at first glance, to be somewhat of a surprise. The California Cannabis Association, representing medical marijuana dispensaries, has come out against legalization, claiming it would be “a direct assault on medical marijuana patients.” Prop 19, in fact, would be a IN CALIFORNIA direct assault on the profits made by those dispensaries. A Rand Drug Policy Research Center study this summer found that the price for an ounce of pot could drop 90 percent — before a hefty tax — if it’s legalized in California. This is in part because the law would allow people to grow a small plot of their own weed, further cutting into the cartels — legal and illegal. And that’s really the crux of the issue. Most of the bad things associated with marijuana come from its criminalization. If legalization curbs the violence — of the Mexican drug lords, of the gangsters who still wage turf wars in parts of California, of the powerful and paranoid growers in the north — it will have done society a big favor. Politicians have cowered in the wake of Prop 19’s appeal, as have most of California’s newspapers. It would bring chaos, they say, leaving it up to the counties to decide how to tax, sell and regulate. Oh, the chaos! And worse — “it would make California a laughing stock,” in the words of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. He should know. Schwarzenegger runs a state that is bankrupt, broken and ungovernable. God forbid he should let common sense into California. **/ LP:@@:=B@BM:EF:@:SBG>'<HF H<MH;>K +)*)
