ersaundra Hall (Ke LaRae), a Southern California native, has been a lead singer in her church choir since she was six years old. In 1997, her choir came in second place at the Quaker Oats Gospel Competition and took home $10,000. Most say, “We can feel the spirit of God working through her.” and “She sings from her soul.” Later, In 2002, she did her first recording which was, “Peace” from the “Soul of Christmas album. This song received radio play on 102.3 KJLH in Los Angeles. That is when everybody knew she had potential. In 2003, she sang, “Shine” live from her church’s album. She later took a West and East Coast Tour and she was singing her solo, “Shine.” Her style of music is rhythm and neo-soul. She is excellent at writing poetry. At least that’s what they tell her. She raps occasionally. She graduated Cal State Fullerton in May 2007. Now the skies the limit for this young destined to be diva. She is working with producers Darryl Ross who has worked with many artists such as Micheal Jackson’s and Jill Scott’s album. Another producer is Mark Gordon from Levert and his track masters, The Noisey Boys. She has also worked with Arvel McClinton who did Brandy’s first album and is now working with J.Lo. Lastly, she has teamed up with Mike Greggs from the Jimmy Kimmel Show. In early 2004, she went to pursue her goal of reaching people via positive music. She has performed with such bands as 1500 or Nothing and Brian McKnight’s Band just to name a few. She has performed at The Sunset Room and sang, “Forever, For Always, For Love.” She received salutations from Brian McKnight, Jim Brown, and Tracy Morgan. She has performed this song that she wrote called, “U R,” at the Temple Bar. She tears the house down every time she sings it. They ask her all the time, when is her album coming out. She tested her upbeat tracks, China Hyphy and Drama Lips at a local Hollywood night spot and the crowd went bananas. They said it was one of the best artist grooves they have ever heard and where can they purchase the tracks. Some of her R&B grooves particularly touched some of her more mature fans at the local house parties she attended. She sneaked the songs in and told the DJ’s,“ Help a sista out.” Currently, she has completed 12 songs ready for production with R&B and neo-soul flavor. She is hoping that you guys love her songs.

KICKIN IT WITH MATCHSTIK

SDM: Who is Matchstik? MS: A super positive person that believes in the impossible, to be uplifting and positive. Being able to tell my story intelligently. Along came Matchstik is an implement into Pop Culture Music. Hard core songs everyday growing up in the world, and talking what your feed up with as far not seeing people who are role models not doing things to help people. Not about how much money you have. Don't want to be the guy who is flaunting my wealth. Basically, you want to stay humble and keep people positive and strong that is what music means to me. Music transcends me. SDM: Do you To say up-and-coming rapper Matchstik had a consider yourself rough childhood is an understatement. a rapper or a -Billboard Magazine performer? MS: I would consider my myself and entertainer as opposed to a rapper or performer. HipHop is what I do, when I think of a rapper they aren't really saying anything, consider drake, JZ, Kayne, or T.I. as entertainers because of the broad scale of what they are doing. They give you another parallel of entertainment. SDM: When your performing, what is the most important thin you want your audience to remember about a Matchstik show? MS: When they see me I want them to know they got their money’s worth, forget about their nine to 5 they embraced me. Positivity is contagious. SDM: What were you feeling on stage with Will.I.Am after the E.N.D. world tour. MS: That was one of my most amazing experiences, that energy was inspiring, after seeing what they did it made me want to do more for my craft. Photographer Brad Christopher SDM: Could you elaborate on what you mean by following your heart? MS: It means doing what you truly want to do take chances, fully express yourself take a leap. SDM: What is the driving force and motivation for you doing what you do? And why do you keep doing it? MS: My upbringing plays a big part, seeing where I have come from and dreamed of doing what I am doing, it’s not about how fast you get there as long as you finish the race. SDM: You have been quoted when your album, entitled “The Concept” dropped, “it’s the epitome of my kind of swagg”. “I’m laid back, not a thug, I’m just real folk, making everyday music by a cool kid”. MS: I am just the chilliest person ever, drama free. You can’t move a nation, only move a nation by compassion. Practice what you preach. SDM: Can you tell our readers, a little more a about your recently lauched charity showcase, “The Good Music and a Good Cause”, and how is that progressing? MS: Its a internet based social networking campaign, the rock stars are the people who got out and help the world, in the community, I can take my shine give some shine to other people in the community I am doing what God wants me to do.SDM: You mentioned, you use the internet as your portal. What advice would you give and say to would be musicians and artist wanting to break into the music business? MS: Be smart, grind harder stay focused and be clever. The resources are there to make it happen. Its easy to do anything when times are good, the perseverance to what gets you the break when times are hard. SDM: What’s in the works for Matchstik? MS: Right now I am working on the video, "Nothing is Free featuring Beta" and Just and Artist featuring “Beta” and my track “Everyday” featuring Cletus LeMarc. SDM: Are you planning any Collabos with any artist in the game? MS: My current project is pretty much done, but I would collab with folks if the opportunity presented itself. SDM: Who are you inspired by in the Rap Game? And Why? MS: I told Russell Simmons, I come to do it bigger than you. I want to be clever, Love T.I. because he reminds me of me in my past life as a bad kid. Shots out to my fam in Alabama and the south and everybody who supported me on this project. Let's take the world over. SDM: Are there any tour dates in the future? I

had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Irving, recently on a photo shoot for the upcoming issue of the magazine. My initial impression was Mr. Irving was very cooperative, flexible and charismatic when it came to the photo shoot, which was somewhat chaotic. Mr. Irving will be co-starring in a film soon to be released unfortunately, at this time we cannot say the name. As we begin our interview, I asked the question as I do always, Who is James Irving III? “I am a actor who grew up watching movies, mostly horror, action, and martial arts films”. I decided at an early age that I wanted to act and it was going to be my passion Mr. Irving states. Mr. Irving has acted in several independent films and is currently working on a major production soon to be released. When asked about who inspires him as a actor, Mr. Irving says with a big grin on his face, “Brad Pitt for his diversity of roles, Johnny Depp definitely, Lawrence Fishbourne, Denzel Washington and Will Smith, for his earlier work and now because of the growth in his acting, and the dramatic roles he has taken on”. I consider myself a dramatic and action actor, he exclaims! When I am acting, I want the audience to embrace me because of my passion, character and commitment to the work. My acting coaches have told me, that I have a tendency to outshine people next to me and I need to tone it down. I consider myself a chameleon and I just blend into the role. That is why I have so much shine when I get into the moment. Ultimately, he transitioned from living in Sacramento, and traveling back and forth to Los Angeles, networking and grinding. After so many trips to Los Angeles, some family issues, and spending so much money on traveling he decided to relocate to Los Angeles, fast forward ten years to today, and “I have gained so many benefits, and learning experiences”, and would say to anyone “follow your dreams and believe in yourself”. I asked Mr. Irving, what has been if any the biggest temptation living in Hollywood? He pauses and states, “there has not been any for me I stay focused, my mind is clear on what I need to do”. As we ended our interview, Mr. Irving says “I want people to get to know me rather than me telling them what I think they need to know”.

ON swaggadigital HEALTH

Charlotte Maxwell Complementary Clinic (CMCC) is a non-profit organization, whose mission is to assist low income women who are cancers survivors and recently been diagnosed. CMCC provides free complementary alternative medicine (CAM) as well as social services, organic food, interpretation and transportation to over 800 low income women with cancer in the Bay Area. I was delighted to have recently meet Krista Alderson, the Executive Director at a fundraiser in San Francisco. I immediately connected with their organization, because of a journey that I went through with a close family member a couple of years ago. This was the first time I ever explained my feelings to someone I did not know. However, it felt very serene to talk about it because of what they do. Unfortunately, medicine has progressed over the years in treatment of cancer. However, the social aspect of it in my opinion has not. You have to treat the patient after all of the chemotherapy and radiation and regiments treating the cancer. That is why I was impressed with Charlotte Maxell because of the services they offer. Post cancer treatment needs to work on the psyche as well as the side effects of the cancer treatment as well. Who are they? “The Charlotte Maxwell Complementary Clinic is a community of dedicated women volunteers who have diverse skills and experiences. We are healthcare practitioners and healthcare advocates; we are community organizers; we are lesbians and straight women. We are unified in our goal of offering complementary alternative medicine treatments to women with cancer who are underserved and share the following beliefs and goals”. Located in downtown Oakland, California, founded in 1991 “the CMCC was founded by a dedicated group of health care providers and women with cancer to answer the unmet need to provide low-income women with free complementary alternative therapies”. The demographics and clients Charlotte Maxwell serves women from the lower income bracket who have been diagnosed in the later stages of the disease and find themselves at a disadvantage financially, emotionally, homeless, have small children and need that extra assistance from someone who they can relate to. The ethnic mix of CCMC’s clients are women from all social ethnic backgrounds, AfricanAmerican, Hispanics, and Asian women.

OUR

www.swaggadigitalmagazine.com

CCMC has three (3) core programs, which are: Integrative care for Low Income Women with cancer, which provides complementary alternative medicine (CAM) treatments such as acupuncture, massage and herbs aimed at relieving the side effects of cancer and its treatments, and assisting women in completing their courses of conventional treatment.

•http://www.charlottemaxwell.org/docs/In-Home Comfort Care Program provides (CAM) treatments for those clients with end-stage cancer who are too weak to come to the Clinic •The Post Treatment Program extends our CAM treatments, emotional support, and educational workshops to women living with cancer who have finished their allopathic treatment and have no signs of recurrence. Social Services Program empowers CMCC clients by supporting their life choices starting with the initial telephone request for treatment. Our Social Worker and Social Work Interns welcome and introduce new clients with a tour of the Clinic, document a client’s medical history and overall condition through a comprehensive in-person interview, and thoroughly explain all available CMCC programs and services. Under the supervision of the Clinical Director and in conjunction with the Clinic Coordinator, Social Services continually works with clients assessing their state of well-being, adjusting their CMCC treatment programs, and ensuring their overall comfort and care.Clients are offered the following services: Supportive counseling with CMCC Social Worker Follow-up telephone calls (to maintain contact and continually assess a client’s condition) Connections to community based services Referrals to a variety of professional services (psychotherapy, legal, financial) Information on low-cost or free resources for housing, food, support groups, and community events Over 440 wonderful, caring volunteer practitioners make the Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) treatments and support services provided by CMCC possible.

If you are a licensed acupuncturist, certified massage therapist, therapeutic imagery specialist, Western herbalist, homeopath, driver, Spanish or Chinese language Interpreter, clinic or office support person, we warmly invite you to join our community of volunteers. There is no shortage of volunteer opportunities at CMCC. There are approximately 800 clients at any given time, all needing CAM treatments and support services, now in two locations. One in Oakland located at 610 16th Street, and 2601 Mission Street, Suite 201 in San Francisco. CMCC Hours The Clinic is open Friday 9:30 am to 1 pm and Saturday/Sunday 9:30 am to 5 pm by appointment. They are closed on the 5th weekend of any month. We are unable at this time to take drop-in clients. Our clinic coordinator schedules all client treatment appointments. Office hours are Monday through Friday 9 am to 5 pm. To support the great work of CMCC visit their website at: www.charlottemaxwell.org to make an immediate donation – your support will make a difference in the life of a low income woman battling cancer and poverty!

Color Me Grey dares to ask two startling questions: “What would you do if you had everything you ever wanted and found out the person you trusted most was trying to steal it all from you?” And, “what if two sexual encounters left you with two separate babiestwins-from two different fathers; one obviously black and one obviously white?”

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL HOLDING IT DOWN WITH RUDY CORPUZ, JR. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR UNITED PLAYAZ

United Playaz is a youth led violence prevention program that originated in 1994 due to racial violence between African Americans and Filipinos at Balboa High School located in San Francisco. The violence ultimately evolved including the latinos and samoans. Mr. Corpuz was working as a Gang Prevention Counselor during those turbulent years in San Francisco's gang violence in 1994. He started doing outreach in District 11 as it is known today. During his outreach he realized there was a desperate need for unity in the community. Ultimately all the players came to the table and formulated answers and solutions to their differences and United Playaz was born. Rudy, says "the original intent was not to create an organization just to come to the table and talk and stop the violence." Fast forward 15 years later and United Playaz is still holding it down. SDM: So it "takes a hood to save a hood", is that where you got the slogan from? Dealing with the gangs and implementing prevention techniques, etc. RUDY: Good Question, actually yes the concept came for the people right from the streets, it was never our intent to start this organization, things have just be snowballing. We went to New Orleans during the Katrina disaster a year after. When we got there, we were saddened by the devastation and we thought we were in a Third World country but in actuality we were in America. We asked questions of the residents and as well now know aid and help was slow in coming to the residents of New Orleans along with government assistance during the Katrina aftermath and still to this day in some parts. During the time that I spent in New Orleans and saw how initially it was the people who were helping each other before the government started helping. "Out of this I realized it takes the people to save the people", "it takes the hood to save the hood", and thus our slogan was created. SDM: Are there any other chapters of United Playaz? RUDY: Currently we are in seven schools in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento, New York, the Bronx, Chowchilla the Women's Correctional Center, inside the prison they are called YUP of which most of the members are serving life sentences in the California Penal System, San Quentin State Prison and at almost of the the Correctional Facilities in California holding down the principles of United Playaz. Rudy states with much enthusiasm in his voice "God is everywhere Homie, his tentacles are everywhere."

SDM: What is your target group of individuals as far as age groups is concerned? Rudy: I would say from the age of 5 to age 24 is our main target group SDM: Do you stress education? RUDY: Most definitely! Education is the keep ingredient to life as well as health awareness. SDM: What are some of the resources that you have at your disposal here at the United Playaz headquarters? RUDY: We have several main components that we work from, they are violence prevention, in school and out of school and after school, tutoring is also provided, life skills, education of how not to get caught up in the prison systems, drug usage education, job placement center is available to assist people in finding leads on potential employment, a crisis response team that responds to incidents that happen on the streets where gang violence is indicated. Conflict mediation. SDM: What kind of relationship do you have with the Parents of your participants? How do they feel about United Playaz? RUDY: That's a good question, brother, It goes both ways there are lot of parents that do support us and they see benefits behind what were doing but then there are some parents who are very skeptical of what we do. We have been 15 years strong doing this but we have only been a non-profit for only a year now. There is a lot of criticisms, and controversy behind us because 75% of our staff are all ex-felons. But we all have changed, "were out there banging" but we are "banging for change".

SDM: That's wonderful, the community needs more people out there doing work like that the for the "so-called" unreachable individuals. SDM: Where do you see this organization going, in San Francisco with its diverse cultures? What are some of the ups and downs of keeping the work going in San Francisco? RUDY: Well, I think the ups are within our organization is that the diversity in our program gives us strength to do the work. We have people from all races in our program, but if you look at San Francisco as a whole people of color are slowly being pushed out, especially families and seniors due to economics, lack of affordable housing, etc. The state is cutting back on social programs and the economy is definitely a major factor in the exodus of people of color.

SDM: That's wonderful, the community needs more people out there doing work like that the for the "so-called" unreachable individuals. SDM: How would you reach out to the people who do not know about United Playaz? What are some of your methods in getting the word out about United Playaz? RUDY: It comes back to the question about education! Educating the masses of people about what we do, what we are about, and how we get down. We are going some guerilla outreach. Let me know tell you one way we get down. We stage a fight, we have four or five people that have flyers about United Playaz, so the first or second day of school we let the school administration know we are going to stage a fight right there in the courtyard or the front of the school where everyone can see, so when the fight kicks off everybody see what's happening. So when everybody runs over to see what's happening. They would see two people confronting each other, we stop and say "what's wrong with this picture" then everybody from UP will turn around with the flyers will pass out the flyers and say "Get with us" stop the violence. SDM: What is the state of the youth right now in the city of San Francisco? What are some of the challenges you would like to attack right now, not tomorrow but today? Rudy: I think a lot of the youth right now are being portrayed to look bad when that is not the case. You have to look at each individual circumstances, the environment they are growing up in and you wonder why. The violence and turbulence did not just start today. You look at the history and how the youth have been treated, most of them were never respected and now they are expected to respect people and do and be good overnight. Look at now in San Francisco, no summer school, no summer jobs, the cost of living has skyrocketed, both parents now have to work.

SDM: So where do these kids need to go then? Do they need to be here at United Playaz and if so then why do they need to be here? Rudy: That's a great question, I think they do need to be here! They need to be at programs, centers and have services just like ours. But the reality of the situation is that most services and centers like ours funding is non-existent and or being scaled back. I feel we try and communicate to our participants the "real" real life and not sugar coated situations. We give them unconditional love. SDM: What Kind of Activities do you have here for the kids? Because kids have a short attention span. Rudy: At this center our headquarters, right now we have only been open for 5 months so we are still in the process of building. The kids are very creative and the kids are very fortunate, we have a pool table, a studio, we are working on a computer lab, we have televisions, video games but these are all material things and I think one of the best things we have is we have each other and we are very creative. We have cookouts, we are like just one big happy family. SDM: What would you say is the predominate race at the center? And are other languages other than English spoken? Rudy: Oh yeah, I speak Ebonics Player we have filipinos here, latinos, blacks, white SDM: How do you get them to understand that color is just a condition? About the human race Rudy: I think a lot of it is how they have learned the differences, and it started with their parents or whoever they were living with, and then television, music, the media, it kinda brainwashing them so when were here we have the opportunity to educate them and tell them the truth. We are all living the same struggle, we in this together. A lot of local celebrities support our cause and we appreciate them spreading the word about how we are rolling in the community. SDM: What can the community do to help out with United Playaz? Rudy: We have a process for people who want to come to the center and participate, because we have children so their is a protocol to become a counselor. What we really need is money. Right now we are in a building that we are currently leasing. My chase now is to purchase this building for the community. This building and its size is the only refuge for the children in the south of market area in San Francisco. We are trying to raise 1.5 million dollars so send your donations to United Playaz 1038 Howard Street, San Francisco, Ca. 94103 (415) 573-6219 all your donations are tax deductible. www.unitedplayaz.org ~ Words Ron Fulcher & Dupree Gant

ON OUR RADAR

S

ebastian Flores was born to a home brimming with love, but afflicted by many of the pressures common to low-income households throughout the United States. Drug abuse was perhaps the most destructive issue, and because of this problem, his family was left without a father. A single mother living in a homeless shelter on the streets of Oakland raising four children. A father long since gone, battling addiction to drugs. Little money and less hope. This scenario is not exactly what most would consider a recipe for success. Sebastian and his three brothers did not live a luxurious life. While other children went out and played, he had other things to worry about. At the age of 5, Sebastian lived for a year with his father

HOMELESS TO HARVARD

who had apparently overcome his addiction. His kindergarten year he showed promise as a student, and enjoyed finally living with his father. However, one day after school he came home to an empty house. His father in the pursuit of another high, had abandoned him. After a few days, his mother came and rescued him and he went back to live with his brothers. They continued to live in a shelter for a few years, but eventually they were able to remove themselves from this environment and moved to Hayward. Sebastian attended public school and despite his situation, worked hard to earn good grades. In high school, he continued striving for success despite the obstacles around him and was also a varsity athlete. While many of his friends became involved in gangs or drugs, he continued to push and attempt to make something of himself. However he was unable to completely escape the influence of his environment. His junior year he was taken into custody by police on minor charges, but was later released to his parents. After this incident, he resolved to better himself. In December of 2009, he finished applying to college, hoping on a long shot to make it into a top school. Imagine then, his surprise when he was not only accepted into Harvard University, but also earned a $40,000 scholarship for black youth who had demonstrated academic potential. Through hard work, the support of his family, and determination, he succeeded and hopes to inspire and give hope to others in similar situations.

A

ll my life I have been doubted. As a child people thought I was too chubby to play soccer but from day one when I stepped on the field I know that was where I was supposed to be. Silencing the critics playing two years up as a kid or now getting a free education for my abilities I have always had to prove these people wrong; in doing so I have accomplished a lot but work my hardest everyday for more. I’ve played from nationally ranked youth clubs. As captain I have lead my club to a national championship final and earned the right to a full scholarship to several division one soccer programs. After starting four years at a division 1 program playing the likes of NCAA Champions UCSB and other nationally rated colleges I emerged a standout. With aspirations of the next level I was very much grounded my senior year due to an injury carried all season long. Though affected by this injury I persevered and got back on the field being invited to tryout with team such as Austin Aztecs, Tampa Bay Rowdies, NCS Minnesota, and Pittsburgh River hounds. I now patiently train waiting for the chance to show my pure athleticism with invaluable leadership qualities and the willingness to be coached.
