GLOBAL INDIANS FOR BHARAT VIKAS: MISSION 2014 ‘Congress Mukta Bharat’ From: Chaitanya Davé <chaitanyadave@hotmail.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 2, 2013 11:45 PM Subject: An Appeal to India's Youth by Chaitanya Davé

AN APPEAL TO YOUNG INDIANS http://www.gibv.org/ October 2, 2013

On the birthday of Gandhiji, our beloved father of the nation, I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to all of you, the young Indians all across India. This appeal is specially intended at you the youth if India because you have the dynamism and energy to act. Please take it seriously as it comes from my heart. I live in the United States since 1966. I came here as a young student for further studies. Though I have lived here in California, USA with my family all these years, my heart and soul have always been with our beloved country, India. This is probably true with most of the NRIs living abroad. I can assure you friends that I have seen the world and am speaking with knowledge and experience. Please allow me to share with you the truth as I see it. Ever since our azadi, we have been watching India going downhill. The cancer of corruption is eating away the country. Global Financial Integrity, a Washingtonbased think tank (April, 2011) said that some $500 billion (Rs. 22 lakh crore at earlier exchange rate)--while other reports put total deposits abroad stashed away abroad at $1.5 trillion--has been spirited out of the country. If this enormous amount is brought back, each of the 400 million Indians who are below poverty line could receive Rs. 56,250. From more than1.82 lakh crore 2G Scam to the Commonwealth Games Scam to 1.86 lakh crore Coal Blocks Allocation Scam, India has become the corruption capital of the world. According to India Today Magazine (July 22, 2013 issue, North America Edition), Rs. 6,29,675 crore were paid in bribes by urban India every year. This amounts to more than 320% of India's total income tax revenue. It is more than 353% of India's defense budget. It comes to 2,151% more than India's total health budget. This is more than 942% of its education budget. It is more than 741% of its food subsidy. All these numbers are staggering. Loss of such astonishing amount causes untold damage to the economy and stunts the country's growth and development. Money is basically stolen from you, the middle class and the poor. Still you are doing nothing to stop this colossal theft by the rulers in New 1

Delhi? Your blood should be boiling as mine does. While corrupt officials in China are punished with life in prison or death sentences, corrupt politicians and others in India go unpunished and unscathed. No wonder, politicians especially under current Congress-led government keep looting the country knowing well that nothing will happen to them anyway. No wonder the country has remained poor even after 66 years of independence. The current Congress-led UPA government has offered you after assuming power for last several years: No farsighted visionary policy for the future, no green energy shift, no population control policy and no protection for women as there have been thousands of rapes across the country. There is no protection from terrorism and every now and then our jawans are killed by our neighbors at the border with impunity facing no consequences. India's population is 1.2 billion. As per United Nation's projections, India will add close to another half a billion people by the year 2050, a frightening scenario. More than 40% of our children under 5 are malnourished, a figure similar to sub-Saharan Africa's. Our ruling politicians have degraded the country to a Banana Republic. Or you can call it Corruption Democracy or Bribe Republic or Corruptstan. Shame on all the Indians who tolerate such corrupt do nothing politicians who rule India. There is a saying which is very true: “People get the government they deserve.” Amongst Indians in India, the thinking generally goes along this line: “What can we do? The government is so corrupt and bad! I am an ordinary man. Who will listen to me?” Most Indians wait for some one else to do something. Well friends, it doesn't work like that. Everybody thinks like that so nobody does anything and the country goes on...the politicians keep looting the country, filling their bank-balance in their Swiss bank-accounts, and abusing their power. The current UPA government does everything possible to stay in power while protecting the corrupt and coming out with vote-getting gimmick—like their recent decision to give extremely cheap food to the poor at the election time-- while your country goes down the drain. Do they care? Absolutely not. After 66 years of independence, why should there be any poor in the country? My young friends, take your country back from these looters and unethical people who are governing over you. No one else is going to do it for you. The election of a prime minister is too important to leave it to a chance. The responsibility lies with you the young, the educated and the conscientious. The rulers in New Delhi are happy with the status quo. The rich and powerful are too comfortable with the way things are. They are not going to change things. But the average Indians who constitute some 80 to 90 percent of India's population are suffering. The poor are too poor trying to make two ends meet. It is you, the middle and upper-middle-class-who are educated and who have the knowledge about how this government is 2

exploiting the country--have the obligation and capacity to bring about the change. Throughout history, the revolutions and major changes are brought about by the middle-class, neither by the poor nor by the rich. It is your life, your children's and grand-children's lives that are at stake; that will be adversely affected. Do you and your children want to spend your lives in a country ruled by corrupt and power hungry politicians who always take care of their families and friends rather than their country for which they were elected in the first place? In America where I live, all the great changes in the country were brought about by the middle-class and by grass-root average peoples' movements, not by the politicians. “Women's Suffrage”, the “Voting Rights Bill”, the “Civil Rights Movement”, many “Labor Laws” and the “Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)” etc. were all brought about by average people who became activists, not by politicians or presidents. Similar is the case with other countries: The French Revolution or the recent Arab-Spring that threw out the king or the dictators such as Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, all were sparked by common people daring to take uncommon steps. I am appealing to you the educated class, especially the young ones (but also the older people) who have maximum to lose by doing nothing. For God's sake, take back your country at the election box from these ineffective, unethical corrupt power hungry politicians who are ruling over India for most of its independent history. If they were honest and efficient, India by now would already have become a developed country rather than a poor third world nation comparable to many African countries. No wonder they say that “India is a rich country inhabited by poor people.” If the billions were not stolen from people by corruption, there would not have been any poor people in India. Aren't you tired of the political dynasty in your country? What qualification does Sonia Gandhi have to rule over the country? What qualifications does Rahul Gandhi have to be India's next prime minister? The current prime minister, you might have realized by now, was selected by Soniaji because he is a “yes” man. He is not a leader. He is a follower. What India needs is a dynamic leader with experience and vision for the 21st century; not a follower who follows the madame's dictates and perpetuates the “Dynasty.” Dear friends, don't sit there or just complain while doing nothing. That leads you nowhere. Millions of Indians everyday spend hours complaining about the government and the state of affairs sitting idly with their friends drinking tea and chewing paans doing nothing. Democracy is not a spectator sports. Remember what our great leader Vivekananda had said: “Arise, awake, stop not until your goal is achieved.” Vivekananda has inspired many a great men: Subhash Chandra Bose, Sukarno of Indonesia and the current great Gandhian Anna Hazare. Aren't you going to join the ranks of these men? Aren't you going to dare? What are you afraid of? Work for your country day and night and the rest of India will join you. Take your 3

country back from these power-hungry, inept and corrupt politicians who lack any vision for your future. Make your country into a great nation where there is equality, justice and prosperity for all its children and not just for foxy, privileged, and crooked few. As you have seen, India has become a “Democratic Dynasty,” not a true democracy. True democracy is stolen from us. Look at the members of parliament? Many of our MPs have criminal records. Additionally, nowadays in Indian politics, there are quite a few sons, daughters and wives of ministers, ex-ministers, chief ministers, and exprime ministers. What a nonsense? This is because politics has become a big business in India. Where else could you make money for your seven generations, get so much fame and hero-worship and usurp so much power? No other business offers all these three so much and so fast. An average Indian like you who wants to serve people through politics has no chance to stand for an election and get elected because he has no money and no connections. My friends, it doesn't have to be this way in a democracy. All this can be changed if you so decide and work hard for it. You the youth of India has enormous power that you do not realize. Get united, work hard and you can throw out all these corrupt and crooked politicians from their seats of power in the coming election of 2014. Take back your country. The quality of your lives and your children's and grand- children's lives will depend on what you do or don't do today. We are at this pathetic state of affairs because average citizens have been the spectators, not active participants in the Indian democracy. The blame lies entirely on the people of India. You and your parents have allowed such jokers and selfish politicians to run your country. What do you expect? Ask yourself, your parents and your friends, “how many of them have ever tried to improve your society and your country? How many have tried to canvass for a good and honest candidate for loksabha, rajyasabha, state legislatures, chief ministers or even city corporators?” People get the government they deserve, remember? But now, you can change this my friends. We the NRIs are settled here in USA and other countries for many years. Most of us are your parents' age or even older. Many of us left India for further studies. But there also was the lure and attraction of America. In my opinion, we have made a huge mistake of not going back to our motherland and serve. No question about that. But you live in India. You have so much to gain or lose by what India will be. You can change and improve your motherland which has given you and all of us so much...the beautiful and unforgettable childhood, the education, the great Indian culture and our great religions. Have we ever asked: “We have been takers all our lives. How much have we given back to our motherland?” This is the real problem. Most of the Indians are takers. Very few are givers to the country. No wonder the country is in such a dire condition. I can assure you that on our part, we will do all we can to help you change India through coming election and and there after to turn it into a developed country. But the real doers will be you, the youth of India living in India. All of you are so bright and with so much energy. All you have to do is to 4

realize your potential, get united and steer that enormous energy in the right direction of changing your country and your future. Fortunately, a new star has arisen on the battered and barren Indian political landscape like a fresh spring-time breeze from lush-green mountains. India didn't have a man like this for decades. He is the three times chief minister of Gujarat, the prime ministerial candidate of BJP, Shri Narendra Modi. Don't take my word for it friends. Just look at his record. He is a totally incorruptible man coming not from any political dynasty but from an ordinary background. During his stewardship of Gujarat, he has brought the state the prosperity and progress that no other state can match. 12% or more GDP growth for last several years and availability of water and electricity all over the state where possible. He has made Gujarat an unmatched leader in industrial development, agriculture, foreign investment and in host of other fields. He has given Gujarat the corruptionfree governance that is envy of any state or country in the world. He has brought in countless businesses from other areas of the country and the world. He is a no nononsense doer and go-getter. Friends, Narendra Modi will do for the country what he has done for Gujarat if people of India are smart enough to elect BJP and Modi to power. It is in your hands. Nehru was a great man indeed. But Nehru-dynasty? No. We have given Nehru-Indira dynasty the chance to rule. You can see the state of our country today. Isn't now the time to try this dynamic man from BJP and give him the chance? The difference between the two parties is stark. On the one hand, you have a redundant dynasty with either a follower (not a leader) prime minister like the current one or an inexperienced and naive prince who will rule over you without any experience or vision, with business as usual; or you can work hard and elect the party with a visionary and proven leader who will give you a corruption-free no-nonsense administration at the center. He will bring the country the progress, vision and pride that it has not seen since independence. Friends, such opportunity does not come often. May be once in a lifetime. Grab it, seize it. Work day and night to help elect this dynamic man, India's only hope in a long time. So what should you do to help Narendra Modi? Form groups and organizations in your local areas. Go to villages near your towns and cities, that is where the votes are. Talk to the villagers and city-folks about Narendra Modi's record. Tell them what is at stake: “The future of their children and grand-children.” Convince them to vote for BJP and Narendra Modi. This should be done all over India, in every state, from Uttarakhand to Tamilnadu, from Bengal to Gujarat. Hundreds of groups, “Narendra Modi for PM” should be formed all across India. You young people should go all over your state and the country persuading millions to vote for this man and BJP which has rightly chosen him. With modern technology you can connect with vast number of other young and inspired Indians all across the nation. Use internet, face book 5

and other social media to communicate with other like minded youth across the country. Remember, great leaders start from young age working for their country. Please realize that Narendra Modi is India's only hope today. Seize the opportunity and make him India's next prime minister in 2014. Allow me to quote our great spiritual leader Swami Vivekananda again: “Believe in yourself and the world will be at your feet.” “The greatest sin is to think yourself weak.” “Stand up, be bold, be strong. Take the whole responsibility on your shoulders, and know that you are the creator of your own destiny. All the strength and succor you want is within yourselves.” “My faith is in younger generation, the modern generation. Out of them will come my workers. They will work out the whole problem, like lions.” “It is the youth that will transform the nation.” My young friends, India's future is in your hands. Realize it. Grab it. Believe in this great man's wisdom. Heed his call to action. Work incessantly until your goal is achieved! Jai Hind

NARENDRA MODI’S TRANSFORMATIVE POLITICS

http://www.narendramodi.in/narendra-modi%E2%80%99s-transformative-politics/

Dynastic, communal, caste based, appeasement, opportunism, slugfest, rhetoric are some of the words that come to mind in defining the state of politics in India today. Development, reforms, good and accountable governance seems to have been shunted and put in the back burner. At a youth conclave, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam put it succinctly, any party which practises development politics, is sure to take the state and thereby the nation on the path of development. As per him a state or the nation is set to be growing when the political party practises 70% development politics and 30% party politics. He was soon asked a question; could he name states which practise development politics today? Pat came the reply; Dr. Kalam said one of the states is definitely Gujarat. Taking development politics a step ahead, with the advent of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his elevation to lead BJP’s prospects in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls at the national stage, one would without a doubt say India is beginning to realise the dawn of ‘Transformative politics’. Here is why.

Inclusive Development A fascinating aspect of watching Narendra Modi (NaMo)’s method of governance has been the fact that he has never singled out one particular community or class and held them responsible for the growth of Gujarat. When he talks or acts, he credits the growth of the state to the 6 crore Gujaratis. This has been one of the notable reasons for the BJP and NaMo to be elected thrice in a row. Whenever there have been allegations, abuses hurled, the people of Gujarat have given their response by voting him and the party to power. 2012 elections is indeed a sound example. Unlike the Prime Minister who said, a specific community has the right to country’s resources first. NaMo has always been clear in his intentions of placing the people first in governance and ensuring everybody’s growth through collective efforts and decisive policies. He assures India’s fate to make 21st century its own lies not with the ones in power but with 1.2billion people to help realise the potential of this nation. 7

Integrating technology in governance Under NaMo’s leadership, Gujarat has steadfast progressed in integrating technology in governance. Earlier this year while addressing the Google tent conference, NaMo said, “The time has come for the political class to adapt to Information technology and reinvent itself! It needs to embrace the internet’s many powerful facets. The political class needs to stop seeing technology as a problem creator, and start harnessing it in the right spirit.” No wonder, often you hear NaMo calling on the audience to interact with him on the social media platform with respect to contributing to his narrative. Come to think of it, this is just an extension of participative democracy where people share their concerns, comments and feedback on what they want to hear from a national leader. In the same Google tent event, NaMo said, “The crux of politics lies in connecting to the people. In India earlier, a citizen’s connect to politics was limited to once in every five years – from one election to another. Now, one engages with, and is a part of the polity every moment! He shares information, raises questions, comments, and connects with others. He voices his opinion and gives his feedback.” Isn’t this indeed a positive where NaMo comes across as being accessible, unlike the PM who lives in a cocoon of confidantes? And is not a fact that a diverse democracy like our needs such a leader who is accessible? Well, NaMo’s definition of India Tomorrow sums up his vision as well, “IT+IT= IT. Indian Talent + Information technology= India Tomorrow.” He has consistently maintained the internet has truly empowered the citizen. It has forced the politician to perform.

Electoral Reforms “Concept of choosing the lesser evil should be done away with; people should be given the right to reject.” NaMo resonated once at a conclave held in June 2013. Addressing young leaders from the social, political and business domains this was undoubtedly one of the most significant moments of the conclave which witnessed NaMo firmly backing the Right to reject option. NaMo re iterated that people should be given the right not just to vote but also to reject. He went to explain that the political parties will learn to be alert and will truly work hard to win elections by perseverance. By opting for right to reject, the voters are sending out a clear message to the political parties to field the right candidates. , he had said then. 8

Fast forward to September 27 2013, in what was a landmark judgement, the Supreme Court of India asked the Election Commission to include the option of Right to reject for the voters. Not many would be aware of the fact that the Gujarat Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Modi had recommended a bill way back in 2009, which was to give the voter the right to reject. NaMo’s views are quite clear as he had opined during the youth conclave then, that the decision by the EC to implement Right to reject will only help voters take the initiative of knowing who the representative of the party is and what are his/her credentials. This will help the public make informed choices. This he felt will make the party field good candidates. NaMo believes that the world’s largest democracy can indeed be unshakeable if compulsory voting is in place. He is of the firm belief that compulsory voting will curb mindless and extravagant expenditure on elections as the voter will anyway have to come to the polling booth and cast his or her franchise. If this was not enough to reiterate his stand, in what appeared to be the first bipartisan digital media initiative, NaMo called on personalities across lines to encourage youth especially in the age group between 18-25 who he aptly refers to as ‘Bhagya Vidhatas’ to get registered as voters in the Election Commission drive. Note, NaMo’s call was to not to vote for him, but exercise each one’s right to be vote. If this is not statesmanship, then what is?

True Democrat At the Hunkar rally in Patna, NaMo quite clearly outlined the 4 major enemies of our democracy – dynastic politics, caste politics, opportunistic politics and communal politics. As a matter of fact 2014 Lok Sabha polls will truly be historic in a sense that the national will witness democracy battling all these evils. On one hand there is a democratically elected Chief Minister of Gujarat, not just once but thrice, the one who has been democratically elected to represent the BJP as its Prime Ministerial candidate. On the other hand are leaders who are elected solely on the basis of their loyalty to a particular family, leaders who ensure financial well-being of future generations of their party collegues and allies, and leaders who in the name of appeasement are dividing communities and classes.

9

India First At the Hyderabad rally, NaMo made it clear on what to expect with him at the helm in the centre, he articulated, “Government has only one religion and that religion is ‘India First’. The Government has just one scripture and that scripture is Constitution of India. The Government has just one form of devotion and that is to remain devoted to India. The Government has just one power and that is power of the people. The only homage of the Government is to do well to the 125 crore countrymen. “ The political climate in India today connotes appeasement. Appeasement is nothing but acceding to demands or suo motto granting concessions or favours in the hope of getting support and good will. With NaMo providing a meaningful counter narrative to put an end to the stale appeasement politics, this in most certain terms puts to rest those who seek solutions on what NaMo envisions for India and in specific governance.

Women Empowerment There have been plenty of means through which women have been empowered in Gujarat. One such has been the introduction of a bill to ensure women reservation in local body polls. At a woman conclave, NaMo shared that the state Assembly has already passed a bill for 50% reservation in local bodies. One is forced to think that what better method can there be than to involve women in the decision making process. That is precisely NaMo’s vision to ensure women are integrated into the decision making process and there-by are dynamic partners in the journey of development.

Innovating through out of the box thinking Be it Statue of Unity, Jyoti gram yojana, establishing nari adalats for women to ensure legal and social justice, empowering youth through skill development, pushing for chemicals and petro chemical industries to work in tandem with environment or working towards making Gandhi Nagar a solar city, NaMo continues to innovate with out of the box thinking. To re affirm that he does not do it all alone, but through team work, NaMo’s sound answer to Reuters sums it up, “If you call yourself a leader, then you have to be decisive. If you’re decisive then you have the chance to be a leader. These are two sides to the same coin … People want him to make decisions. Only then they accept the person as a leader. That is a quality, it’s not a negative. The other thing is, if someone was an authoritarian then how would he be able to 10

run a government for so many years? … Without team effort how can you get success? And that’s why I say Gujarat’s success is not Modi’s success. This is the success of Team Gujarat.”

Policies beat Politics Undoubtedly this is a benchmark NaMo has set, it resounded from him at the Delhi rally when he criticized Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif for allegedly calling Indian PM Manmohan Singh, a ‘dehati aurat.’ He is prompt in even appreciating PM for stating that India needs Patel’s approach to secularism and not that of vote bank secularism. NaMo has set his standards high, by fighting the opposition only on policies and not personally. Well, there is no need to despair as the mood in the nation is brimming with hope…..Transformative politics by NaMo is sure to catch the eye of not just his critics but also those who truly wish to get rid of the current mudslinging and contribute to India taking its rightful place in the world. * * *
