May 2012 bentley park resident newsletter Across My Desk CEO’s Report Doesn’t April just fly by. Many people may not know this but in terms of working days, it is the shortest month of the year, and this month it certainly seemed to live up to its title. I trust all residents had an enjoyable Easter, and also took the opportunity to reflect and pay tribute to our service personnel as part of the annual ANZAC memorial proceedings. I will mention a little bit more about this later.

The month of April has been an extremely busy time for SwanCare Group and, particularly for the Bentley Park site. Let’s have a look at some of the notable activities that have come across my desk in the last few weeks:-

Green Light thinking given to Stage 5 of Bentley Park I made the announcement at the Residents meeting during April, and I would like to reiterate the comments that we have now officially commenced planning and thinking in regards to the next major stage of our Bentley Park redevelopment. Known as Stage 5, (we really do need to come up with a better name), this will be the most significant and, probably the most influential stage of our redevelopment cycle. Largely

Bentley Park Social Club Afternoon Tea - 20th May

due to the location of the development, and the size of the development area, Stage 5 will change the exterior landscape and have a direct impact on the external appearance of SwanCare Group as an organisation. This is because the development site is essentially a major component of the perimeter border of our village at Bentley. It incorporates the area fronting Jarrah Road, the intersection of Jarrah Road and Adie Court, and along Adie Court to Talbot Place. The area will eventually join up with the recently completed Stage 4 units. It is a very large site, and as is our normal approach we will be undertaking this development in discrete, manageable stages. There will naturally be relocations of residents as part of the development process, but do not worry or have any concerns if you are one of those in the development area. Continued Page 3

CEO’s Report We have established an excellent reputation over quite a few years now of successfully handling the relocation process to ensure that it is painless and seamless as possible. You will be communicated with well in advance if you are required to relocate, and we will work directly with you to develop an individualised relocation plan specific to your needs. As part of Stage 5 we will also be considering the Community and Recreational facilities at Bentley Park, and in this regard will be looking at enhancing many of the central facilities co-located around the bowling club and leisure centre precinct. There is much work to do in the planning phase, we must get this right as there will be no second chance once we start construction. To ensure that we capture as much data and information about the types of dwellings and services to be constructed in Stage 5 we will be seeking thoughts and opinions from a variety of input sources. One of these will be our own resident group, and in this regard I will be looking to establish a Bentley Park Reference Group, whom we can seek input from. If you consider that you would like to be considered for inclusion in this reference group I would encourage you to fill out the Expression of Interest form below and return it to Administration by the closing date. I would like to limit the numbers to about 12 persons, so we may have to have a selection / interview process if we get overwhelmed with expressions of interest.

Yellow Wheelie Bins Given the Go-ahead After a successful trial of the yellow recycling bins at Plantation Apartments and also Cooinda, we have now given the go-ahead to roll out (pardon the pun) the wheelie bins to the remainder of the Bentley Park village. Naturally with a site as large as ours we won’t be able to do this all in one hit, so we will be staging the process over the next few months. An information notice has been circulated to all residents advising you of the staged approach. If you have any questions please direct them to Natalie or Mike at Administration, they will be only too pleased to assist. This is a wonderful initiative for our village, not only are there direct benefits in assisting with recycling waste product, but we are also hopeful that this scheme will reduce the numbers of the old green bins that will be required, which if we do, will have a positive impact in helping to limit the impact of proposed increases to our general waste disposal costs.

Money Back Guarantee – TV Advertising Promotion Most of you by now have probably had the opportunity to view our TV advertisements that we have been airing on 7Two, GEM and

Expression of interest to be a member of the ‘Stage 5 - Bentley Park Resident Reference Group’ Name:___________________________________________________ Address: _________________________________________________ Please cut out and return to SwanCare Group, Administration, 1st Floor, 26 Plantation Drive, Bentley, on or before the closing date - 31st May 2012.

GWN. The campaign, featuring the rather “quirky” advert and promoting the money back guarantee will be running until the end of May. This is a really exciting initiative by SwanCare Group, and the guarantee runs across all three of our communities, namely Bentley Park, The Space@Carlisle and of course Australind Rise. I must say that the advert has generated a lot of discussion and comment. It is not to everyone’s taste, that is quite clear, but notwithstanding this, we have had some excellent feedback, and even the knockers are at least talking about the advert, and importantly they haven’t missed the vital message, which is of course the money back guarantee. Since the advertisement has been airing, our traffic through our website has trebled, the result of which has seen a genuine increase in the numbers of inquiries. Remember, that the $1,000.00 spotters fee still applies. So if you can encourage a friend or acquaintance to purchase a unit at any of our communities, not only will they have access to the money back guarantee offer, but you can earn yourself a nice little kicker of $1,000.00.

Update on Capital works. During April some notable capital works have in some cases been completed, and some have started, this is a quick heads up, •

The limestone retaining wall / bench seating / place to rest your beer or wine, has now been completed at the BBQ area outside the Stratton Centre. This is a great little addition to our community facilities. What better way to enjoy these lovely warm autumn days than to have a BBQ and a couple of coldies… I encourage residents to take the opportunity to utilise this area, and when they do, throw a snag on the BBQ for me. Work has commenced on the next external elevator. The location for this unit is in Bollig Gardens. These elevators are the perfect solution to help solve the inevitable problem that stair access presents. This unit is the first

of three that have been identified to be installed in the ensuing months. •

The communal antenna at Waminda, referred to as a Master Antenna or MATV, is planned for installation before the end of June this year. These works have been delayed due to the major refurbishment that was undertaken on the ground floor entry at Waminda. This work is now nearing completion, which paves the way for us to now start on the much awaited MATV system.

I am pleased to advise that the controlled access wing at Kingia, and the accompanying garden and external walking path has now been successfully completed and is being enjoyed by residents that have lowcare dementia. This is a great boost to the service delivery options that we now have available at Kingia. It is also tremendous testament to the adaptability of the building in that we were able to convert the internals to accommodate this controllable and secure access to provide these residents with an enhanced quality to their daily living experience.

And finally for this month …. ANZAC day will have come and gone, but the memory resonates for ever and with me I am always buoyed by the stirring and emotional Ode of Remembrance, and I would like to conclude this month’s article with these immortal words taken from Laurence Binyon’s poem “For the Fallen”…. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. Looking forward to seeing you around the village, All the best, Graham Francis – CEO.

Bentley Park News Smoke Detectors Around this time of year we are advised to have the batteries changed in our smoke detectors. SwanCare Group are obliged to supply and ensure that smoke detectors are fully operational prior to tenancy but the changing of batteries and testing of detectors has been the responsibility of the tenant, with assistance from maintenance staff as required. Due to the difficulty for residents to access the detectors and to ensure that all detectors are operational SwanCare will now check and maintain all smoke detectors annually. This is scheduled to occur utilising our maintenance staff and will be processed in group lots. Over the next few months you will be notified of times etc. when we will be starting this process. Please note that our multi level buildings (Mavis Cleaver Court, Richard Cleaver Lodge, Administration Apartments, Plantation Apartments and Drummond Apartments) are maintained by an external contractor and the detectors in these areas are maintained as part of the fire system servicing arrangements. In the meantime please note that all detectors are self monitoring and will alarm intermittently when the battery is going flat, please notify maintenance when this occurs and they will attend asap. Mike Sullivan Manager Building & Facilities

Volunteer Needed I am looking for someone or a couple who like going for walks around the village, to deliver mail on a Friday afternoon. This is generally mail that the postman leaves at Admin, when he is unable to find the correct address. If you are interested please contact Ronnie on 6250 0000 for further details. Thank you to David Silk who has done a wonderful job delivering the mail on Fridays.

Thank you, Ronnie, Admin Receptionist

Bentley Park - Rowethorpe It is good to be back in the Village again, even though our trip was most enjoyable. Apparently nothing untoward occurred while we were away, which is good and I must thank the Acting Co-ordinator and Committee members for their efforts. Remember to report suspicious behaviour immediately on 6250 0020. The next meeting for delegates is on Wednesday 9th May 2012 at 10:00am when it is proposed to hold a picnic. Location to be advised. Tony Ryder, Coordinator

Bentley Park Show 2012 Work has begun on the schedule for this year’s Show and we hope to have it completed and ready for distribution in July. Thanks to the residents who made suggestions, it is still not too late if you have any further ideas for inclusion. The cooler months are an excellent time to work on your project, ideal for completion of the knitting and crochet which most of us put aside during the hot weather. Now is also a great time for cooking chutneys and preserves - with citrus coming into season during the winter months it is an ideal time for making marmalade. Many people go on holidays and outings, a great opportunity for all photographers to catch that perfect, prize winning shot with either film or digital camera- print size is 6” x 4” (postcard) only mounted on a card/strong paper backing to facilitate display without damaging the photo. All residents and staff of Bentley Park are eligible to enter, regardless of whether they are in a club or not. Many residents belong to groups outside of the village to work on their craft, and this does not prevent that work from being exhibited, providing it is their own work and completed during the 2 year period prior to the Show. Finally, we have a Brother CE60 typewriter which is looking for a good home. It is free, though a small donation would not go amiss! If you are interested, please give Beryl Davis a call on 9355 4795 and she will fill you in on the details. Sandra Dale, Publicity Officer Ph: 6250 0538

Last month’s ‘Tidings’ notice stirred up a few of you and I now have about 90 recipes on file. These came from about 29 contributors but I still need lots more. I refuse to believe that there aren’t more family favourite recipes out there just waiting to be set free to share. I feel this is a good community project so please don’t let it die. Can you help? If so, please contact me - John Wellstead, 3 Millstream Way phone 62500505 or email jocar@bentleyparkestate.com.au All published contributions will be acknowledged - unless you tell me otherwise.

Opportunity Shop The Op Shop is a valued service provided to SwanCare Group residents, staffed by our wonderful volunteers. The Op Shop would not be able to operate without the generous donations from our residents and their families. In the interest of ensuring high quality items are donated, a new policy for the donation of household goods and furniture is being implemented. We have had many instances of items being left in units with a note saying “for the Op Shop” but the items are in very poor condition and not suitable for sale. This then means the responsibility of disposing of these items rests with SwanCare Group and not the vacating resident or their family. To overcome this people wishing to donate household goods and furniture will need to fill out a donation form and take it to the Op Shop. The Op Shop staff will then view the items and accept or decline the donation. Residents and families will need to make arrangements for the items to then be either delivered to the Op Shop or disposed of. Donation forms are available at reception or the Op Shop. Bentley Park Social Club The Easter Sunday Concert was a great success, with Adam Penn singing a beautiful succession of melodies interspersed with dancing demonstrations in costume – both ballroom and New Vogue – by a pair of very talented, championship winning twins, who are not quite seventeen years of age. It provided many good memories for some people of their younger days.

Afternoon Tea The Afternoon Tea on 20th May in the Stratton Centre is next up, with tickets available on Monday 14th May in the Administration Centre foyer. The number of tickets is definitely capped due to space availability, and you will need a ticket to participate but you will be free to sit at any table as we are not making allocations on this occasion.

Villager of the Year It is that time of the year again for you to either nominate some-one you think deserves recognition throughout the Village for the work they do or have done, in order to continue the community feeling in this complex, or to perhaps nominate yourself. The nomination forms are available from the Administration Desk until the close of business on 11th May, so that the winner/s may be announced at the Western Australia Day Dinner. Please make the effort to put in your nominations before then, while recognising that previous winners are ineligible.

Western Australia Day Western Australia Day (formerly Foundation Day) will be celebrated on June 1st, at a 3 course Dinner in the Auditorium with special guests and entertainment, plus the announcement of Villager of the Year Award/s. Also, perhaps someone may wish to take out Australian Citizenship at that time.

The revenue from these sales goes towards social activities in Bentley Park, so your efforts to assist are appreciated. Please remember to remove glossy inserts from newspapers before offering them for recycling.

Mother’s day

Mother’s Cooking…!

I remember mother’s day

It’s nice to sit and think about

As it was meant to be

The things that happened yesterday,

Especially for all the mums

The kitchen was a busy place

So simple don’t you see

With Mother cooking, come what may.

Breakfast had to be in bed

The old wood stove is well alight

For unsuspecting mum Action in the kitchen

The bus is $5.00. Please book your seat as soon as possible I need to book drivers.

The kids are having fun

Contact Lorraine on 6250 0425. 13 Wootliff Way.

Trying not to spatter

In they troop with tray in hand

Our outing on the 18th May is to the Tivoli Theatre at Applecross, a night to be looked forward to, as it is a great night out. At present all seats have been sold, occasionally some come available at the last minute due to illness etc., so just give me a ring. Next month to see “Adia” a musical at Marloo Theatre at Greenmount on the 15th June. Tickets are $25.00 each. A little dearer than usual due to the royalties that are quite expensive. All residents of the Village are welcome to join the Theatre Go-er’s Club. No joining fee! If you would like to be on our mailing list for our shows just give me a call.

Mother with her apron on, Will very soon use up the lot. As she starts her cooking day,

The contents of the teacup

Lovely smells will fill the air,

But it doesn’t really matter

Cakes and biscuits soon are baked

The toast of course, is over done

Theatre Go-ers Club

A wood box filled up to the top.

All the things that we hold dear.

As crunchy as can be

Roasts of beef, vegies too,

But it goes down very well

Puddings, custards, every thing;

With a stone cold cup of tea

Fingers scraping out the bowls,

A flower white and pretty

(That brings back a happy ring.)

On the corner of the tray

Not like today, with modern aids

That is all it takes

It’s turned into a breeze.

To make a happy mothers day

Everything’s at fingertips;

P.S the kitchens in turmoil

We do it all with ease.

How ever can it be

It’s good to have these memories

Pots and dishes every where

We know so very well.

Just for toast and tea? Oh well! - Kath Perkins

The Writer’s Group We are a group of friends who write for our own pleasure. We meet to share our work and our ideas, and to offer suggestions to fellow members in a non-critical way that helps to improve their work. Most members write about their memories from years ago, and some write parts of their life stories. Some interesting discussions are had following the reading of the work. We meet each fortnight on Thursday mornings at 9.30 am in the Handicraft Room on the second floor of the Administration Building. One or two new members would be welcome; there are no fees, all you need to do is to bring a piece of your writing to read. Anyone interested would be welcome to come and listen to the readings before deciding to join us. The meeting for May will be on Thursdays 10th and 24th at 09.30 am. Reg Gooch, 9472 6132.

The last evening for night games (until next season) came to a conclusion with the Murray-Ranyard Shield competition – the winners were Terry Nangle, Enis Moir, Ellen Smith and Merle Hannan – Well done to all. The warm weather is still with us and there has been some beautiful evenings where night bowls could have been played, but on the other hand with the onset of cooler days it is great to see more members out playing – we had one of our biggest roll ups on Satuday 14th April. By the time May Tidings comes out, the Molly Hobbs Trophy day will have been held – results next tidings. Thursday 19th April the Club’s Annual Picnic Day was held with a bus trip to Moore River, which included a river cruise and was well supported. Friday 20th April the Club were invited by the EVP RSL to take part in an evening – theme Italian Night – great response from members and bus numbers overflowing. On Saturday 28th April an Inaugural Event for the Club will be held “Colts verses Fillies”. It is planned to be a fun day for all and a day to remember. Results and details next month – A photo finish may be necessary.

Thank You

As the SwanMobile is very busy, please ensure you book in advance and allow plenty of time to get to appointments, etc. The drivers will be swapping over at administration around 12:30pm each day, so do not expect them to be somewhere else at that time. It has also been reported to me that drivers are subjected to abuse from time to time, which I find totally unacceptable. The drivers are volunteers, they brave all kinds of inclement weather to provide this service and they respond to calls and bookings AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
