Ju ne 2012 bentley park resident newsletter Across My Desk CEO’s Report The month of May has been an extremely busy one for us, it has been dominated by significant milestones, important personnel arrivals, and some very major events. Let me start this month’s column by bringing you up to date with the following significant milestones.
Milestones during May: SwanCare Group is a Finalist in the Organisation of the Year Awards It was fitting validation for many months of hard work by SwanCare Group, when they were selected as one of four state finalists in the soon to be announced ACSWA Excellence in Care Awards. The award ceremony, conducted by Aged and Community Services WA, is to be held on June the 8th, and recognises outstanding achievements by not for profit organisations. To be selected as a finalist in the organisation of the year category is a great achievement, and reflects the commitment that SwanCare Group has to enhancing the wellbeing of its residents and to the ongoing development of its employees. The award is acknowledgement of an 18 month journey of hard work that has embraced the entire organisation and has truly been a “Top to Bottom” reform initiative. SwanCare Group has now established a long term sustainable platform that will ensure the continued success and longevity of this very proud and well established provider of Aged Care services.

Waminda Ground Floor Refurbishment Completed For those residents that have had the opportunity to visit Waminda recently you will have noticed the wonderful transformation to the entry foyer and overall changed appearance of the ground floor. The make-over has created a much more welcoming and fresh appeal to Waminda and has received tremendous praise from residents and their families. The ambiance of the entry will soon be further enhanced with the addition of selected artworks, that will create a mini-art gallery feel to the main corridor as you traverse towards Rita’s café. Thank you to the staff and residents who had to endure the construction activity and the disruptions that went with this, however, I am sure that the end result has made the periods of inconvenience all worthwhile.
The Federal Budget: “Living Longer. Living Better.” Campaign On May 8, the Federal Government announced its budget, and incorporated into this document was the Government’s response to the Productivity Commission’s recommendations into the future of Aged Care. The response entitled “Living Longer. Living Better.” contains a raft of changes. The jury is still out as to whether it has actually achieved what the industry had hoped it would. It is, nevertheless, a starting base, and there is plenty of work still to be done to ensure that there is a sustainable Aged Care system for future generations of Australia. The changes, primarily aimed at increased consumer choice and an increased component of user pays, are set to commence in July 2014. The planned changes will be implemented over a staged 10 year period.

I am pleased to announce that Pauline Bremner has joined us in the role of Waminda Facility Manager, and Julie Atkinson in the role of General Manager Aged Care. Both of these ladies have excellent management, clinical and leadership skills, gained over many years of experience within our health sector.
We are most fortunate to secure the services of Pauline and Julie and I would like to wish both ladies all the very best in their new roles and welcome Julie Atkinson them to SwanCare Group. I am sure that you will make them welcome in their respective roles and will, like me, look forward to both Pauline and Julie having a long and fulfilling working relationship with us. 3-Year Accreditation Our three care facilities of Kingia, Tandara and Waminda have undergone their respective three year accreditation reviews during May. In the life-cycle of a care facility this is arguably their most important review. The accreditation, undertaken by the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency, seeks to validate the performance of the care facility against 44 standards of quality of care. The process is very thorough and examines all aspects of the care facilities’ business, from resident care, food, hospitality, therapy, personnel, management and safety. The process runs a fine tooth comb over our policies, procedures and documentation, it will also interview staff, residents and families. The outcome is a compliant or noncompliant result. Compliance with the 44 standards effectively means that the care facility is given the green light to continue operating and receive government funding, non-compliance means sanctions, which could mean, in the worst case closure of the facility. The results of our accreditation will not be known until after this edition of Tidings is printed, however, I am supremely confident that we will achieve a full tick of compliance and will be re-issued with another full three years of accredited approved provider status at all three of our care facilities.
Inaugural W.A. Day Dinner and Villager of the Year
By introducing WA Day, Western Australia has done something no other State has – introduced a public holiday in the State’s name. WA Day represents a dramatic social evolution for the State; it is Western Australia’s first official public holiday name change. It is symbolic of how WA is growing and developing, and gaining confidence about its future, whilst also commemorating the diversity of its history and formation. I know that the Bentley Park Social Club worked hard to ensure that the WA Dinner was a memorable and enjoyable evening, and take this opportunity to thank them on behalf of all attendees. As is tradition, the Villager of the Year Awards were announced at the dinner.

I would like to confirm with residents that the wireless pilot study has now been concluded and it has confirmed that the current coverage that we have is the best that we will be able to achieve with the point to point wireless initiative. The Bentley site has a coverage of about 70% of the site, and with the number of tall buildings and large tress it is considered that this is the optimum that will be achieved. Further, with the advances in 3G and 4G mobile WiFi devises, it is fast becoming more economical and efficient for residents who are seeking wireless coverage to utilise these privately available mobile networking solutions.

On May the 24th, we joined in with thousands of others all around Australia when Kingia/Tandara held a “Biggest Morning Tea” event. This event raised $600 for the Cancer Council. To the staff and residents that attended and contributed to this worthy cause, a huge thank you.

And lastly … to all the mothers, I trust that you all enjoyed your special and well deserved day of recognition on May 13th.
I have it on good authority that we were inundated with a larger than usual number of nominations for Villager of the Year, and I was also told that the judging panel had an extremely difficult time in assessing the worthy recipients, as all the nominees were of such high standard. On behalf of the Board, Management, Staff and Residents I take this opportunity to congratulate the recipients of the Villager of the Year Award Maureen Thompson, Carolyn Wellstead, Don Mabbot and Dave Newlan. Congratulations and well done! And finally to conclude this month’s Tidings I will provide a quick wrap up of some of the other matters that have found their way across my desk …. •
Certainly one of the more significant events on the Bentley Park social calendar has always been the Foundation Day dinner and celebration. This year, the celebration, will for the first time, be held under its new official banner of Western Australia Day or WA Day. June 1st 2012 heralds Western Australia’s first WA Day. This historic day has been renamed to recognise and commemorate the rich history and diversity of cultures that

As we all know, Neighbourhood Watch has been operating on this village (in conjunction with Rowethorpe) for many years, and it is a very vital component of the additional support and services that are present in our community. I would just like to take this opportunity to bring it to the attention of residents that you all have a part to play in Neighbourhood Watch. By being alert to unusual happenings in your immediate area, and reporting any suspicious or unusual events, you are effectively doing your bit for Neighbourhood Watch. Your eyes and ears are an important resource that helps make this village safer and more secure for everyone. I have received a good number of nominations from interested persons who are keen to be members of the inaugural Bentley Park Reference Group. The nominations closed on the 31st May, and I will be assessing the applications with a view to establishing the group by the middle of June. As a reminder, this Group will be used as a sounding board for ideas and thoughts that will be fed into the planning processes for the next stage of the Bentley Park redevelopment. Someone asked me the other day what does Neighbourhood Watch do. Having had time to think about this, some of the things we try to do is advise people on home safety, like keeping their windows and doors locked, curtains drawn at night time, looking out for their neighbours if they have not seen them for a couple of days, reporting to security about anything that looks suspicious. We also report things like broken light fittings on pathways, illegally parked vehicles etc. Once again we would like to remind residents to contact Security on 62500020 immediately if you see anything unusual. Bentley Park Show 2012 The schedule for this year’s Show is almost complete and should be available for distribution early next month. We are introducing a new trophy this year for the person who gets the most points over 3 or more sections who is not the recipient of either the SwanCare Trophy or the Town of Victoria Park Trophy. In line with the increase of recycling being introduced progressively throughout the village, we are introducing a new category
Residents Workshop Because of our responsibility for residents safety and concerns over the status of some of the equipment, the residents workshop will be closed as of 8th June 2012. We will be removing all machines and equipment for evaluation and if they do not meet safety standards they will be disposed of. We will not be supplying any equipment to the workshop when it reopens. Residents wanting to use this facility will have to supply their own tools. Digital TV Upgrades The upgrade of the Waminda and Richard Cleaver Lodge master antenna television systems is underway and due for completion prior to the end of June 2012. Once upgraded all residents with the appropriate digital equipment will be able to receive all digital television channels. There are still a couple of small areas throughout the village that require upgrading works and these will be finished this year, all residents with a digital TV or set top box will then be able to receive the digital channels.

Waiting for a Taxi
It has been reported again that several residents have received phone calls from someone claiming to be a representative from Microsoft advising that they have detected something wrong with their Windows 7 software version and claiming that if you follow their instructions it will resolve the issue. THIS IS A SCAM!
Analogue TV Swith Off Residents should note that the analogue TV switch off is scheduled to take place in the first half of 2013, although the actual switchover date is set as 30th June 2013. This will mean that anyone by this date who has not purchased and installed a digital television or digital set top box will be unable to view any television channels after the switch off occurs. For those who are yet to switch to digital equipment it is expected that the Federal Government will release an assistance package for those with a full pension and some other eligibility criteria. This Government assistance includes the supply and installation of a set top box for use with existing equipment and demonstration of how to use it by a Government approved installer. This assistance program is expected to be announced roughly 6 to 12 months before the switchover. The 1st Western Australia Day Dinner has received great support, with all places taken for the 1st June. The Villager of the Year Awards attracted numerous, very worthy nominations and the winners will be announced at the Dinner. The next Sunday Afternoon Concert on July 8th, will feature ‘Ray Taylor and Corinne’ with a selection of light music, operetta and musical comedy songs. Ray is a member of several professional bands and Corinne is studying at the WA Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). We look forward to seeing you there.
Op Shop The Op Shop is proceeding well with its dedicated band of volunteers and continues to provide a substantial cash input to the Village for a variety of good purposes. Recently, it has sold off some larger items of furniture so there is currently more ‘room to move’.

Thanks again to donors and volunteers who collect these items on behalf of the Social Club. We now have an arrangement with the shop and also with Waminda to recycle their papers, too. We want to continue recycling papers and aluminium cans as we always have, to provide more money to spend on social events. However, some people are putting newspaper and cans in the recycling bins and the Social Club is missing some of the income we used to get.

This was followed by our guest speaker from Diabetes WA who provided us with a wide range of information, helpful ideas and literature to help combat and control this deadly ailment which has reached epidemic numbers.
Our meeting in May was attended by more than 70 Residents with SwanCare Board member Professor Robin Watts also in the audience.
The meeting also included the regular discussions and information-flow regarding Village issues and concluded with the usual free tea, coffee and biscuits.

The cost of ambulance transport varies depending on the nature of the call out. Below are our standard fees for the different services we offer. For insurance against these fees, coverage can be provided through a private health insurer. If you are an Aged pensioner you may also be covered for ambulance transport (refer to the Ambulance Cover section below for further information). Undercroft Bowling Club We had a great Inter-club competition against the Swan Bowling Club. It was a close game with UBC winning 66 shots to 61 shots, Well done everybody!!!. Followed by a BBQ and salads and sweets made by the ladies. It must be mentioned that our members work so hard to make it a success. We are having a Picnic in Rockingham on May 24th. which we always enjoy. Casino bus organised on June 5th.
Kingia/Tandara High Care Auxiliary The next meeting is on Tuesday 26th June 2012 at 2:00pm. When we will have the new General Manager – Aged Care Operations – Julie Atkinson. Along with our usual visit from Annemarie, telling us about her vision for Kingia & Tandara and how we as the Auxiliary may be able to assist. Further coming events include a new booking for the Cameo Loretta Fashions on the 28th August 2012. (Previously cancelled due to illness). When they will be presenting their Spring & summer range. We will see Miller’s Fashions on 31st July and we are still negotiating with Perth Zoo on “Zoo to You” further on that next month. ART GROUP Last month we had a bus trip to The Art Shed – always a popular venue as many of us no longer have cars and this enables us to stock up on art materials in a relaxed and friendly way. As usual we continued on to Fremantle to enjoy a fish and chip lunch on a cool, showery day. We also had a very enjoyable, full day, workshop with Brian Norman who guided us through some new techniques . We were happy with our efforts. SWAN BOWLING CLUB The Molly Hobbs Trophy was conducted on Wednesday 18th April. Wet weather intervened causing a halt in play before completing the event. The winners were Jim Leavy, Dot Prue and Joyce Barker – well done. The inaugural Gala Day – “ Colts verses Fillies” was held on Saturday 28th April – oh what a fun day it was. Three teams of four men and four women were to play three matches of seven ends, but unfortunately inclement weather once again intervened forcing the cancellation of the final round. As the Colts were leading at that time, they were declared the winners, which is just as well, as the Fillies were coming home strongly. Protests were lodged, one for the Colts for taking of drugs (lollies) from the audience and another for bowl abuse- both dismissed by Stewards. At the completion of the event all adjourned to the Leisure Centre for refreshments and friendship.

The Writer’s Group We are a group of friends who write for our own pleasure. We meet to share our work and our ideas, and to offer suggestions to fellow members in a non-critical way that helps to improve their work. Most members write about their memories from years ago, and some write parts of their life stories. Some interesting discussions are had following the reading of the work. We meet each fortnight on Thursday mornings at 9.30 am in the Handicraft Room on the second floor of the Administration Building. One or two new members would be welcome; there are no fees, all you need to do is to bring a piece of your writing to read. We still are the cheapest and friendliest internet access around, so make the most of what we have to offer. We are located on the 2nd floor of the Administration building in an air-conditioned room so it is never hot or cold, the membership is only $10 per annum and each session only $2. There is an experienced facilitator available at each session to help those who want it. We also run a special class for beginners.

I hope you find this restaurant as nice as we do. Bus pick up from 5.30 p.m. Please book early so I can arrange drivers and bus lists. You don’t need a partner as there will be 42 friendly villagers to welcome you. The Undercroft Bowling Club hosted the return match with us at their rinks on Saturday 5th May, which was won by the Undercroft Club 66 to 61. At the end of the match a BBQ lunch was enjoyed by all. Thanks UBC for an enjoyable day and we look forward to the challenge again next year. On Saturday 12th May we celebrated Mother’s Day early. At completion of play a special afternoon tea and raffle was held and it was a wonderful response from all members which made it the success it was – Vera Separvic was the lucky “Mum” who won the gift basket. By the time this June Tidings reaches you, all gala and trophy days would have been held for the season, but several social functions are scheduled for the next few months, so please note the dates and we look forward to seeing as many members as possible enjoying them. After play on Saturday 16th June a “Soup & Roll” evening, Thursday 12th July “Christmas in July” luncheon at the Clansman and finally on Friday 10th August the Annual Club Luncheon to be held at Kingia. Theatre Go-ers Club A most enjoyable night was at the Tivoli Theatre last month. I’m sure all enjoyed it. On the 15th June we are off to Marloo Theatre to see “AIDA” a contempory Musical written by Elton John and Tim Rice. PLEASE NOTE: the leaving time from the village will be 6.30 p.m. NOT 7.00 p.m. as previously advertised. Tickets are all sold, but at times we have a cancellation. On Friday, 6th July we are off to the Garrick Theatre at Guildford to see “DEATH TRAP” a comedy/thriller. Tickets will be on sale on Monday, 4th June 2012 at 9.00 a.m. at the Stratton Centre. URGENT CALL FOR MORE DRIVERS As several of our residents have had to discontinue driving recently for health reasons, we are appealing for more people to come forward to drive the SwanMobile. The shifts are 9.00am to 12.30pm and 12.30pm to 4pm, with Saturday mornings 9.00am until 12 noon. Most shifts are presently covered by
regular drivers, except for Tuesday mornings, but we frequently have to substitute casual drivers when the regulars are ill or on holiday. The pool of casual drivers is currently much depleted, so regrettably I have to call on the regulars to drive more than one shift a week. The drivers all tell me that this is great way of meeting people and assisting those residents that need a bit of help in negotiating this large village of ours. The vehicles are not difficult to drive and after learning you can accompany any driver for as long as necessary to become familiar with the routine.
