TIDINGS JUL12

July 2012 bentley park resident newsletter Across My Desk CEO’s Report Well it’s the half way mark of the year and we are now on the downward side of the slope to Christmas, how quickly the year has flown by. June has always been a busy month and this year it certainly lived up to expectations. There was an incredible amount of activity occurring during the month, and I will do my best to try and capture the main items for you.

High Commendation for SwanCare Group At the recently held 2012 Aged Care Excellence Awards, SwanCare Group, being one of the four state finalists was acknowledged with a High Commendation for the outstanding achievements made over the last 12 months.

CACP Program is Gaining Momentum The roll-out of the Community Aged Care service delivery is proceeding extremely well. The policies and procedures are now all in place, and the Department of Health and Ageing has approved SwanCare Group’s status as an approved provider of this service. It is anticipated that the 20 licenses that we have been initially supplied with will be fully activated from our current retirement village residents. Letters and brochures outlining the new service are in the process of being finalised, and they will be distributed during July. These brochures will provide an easy to understand explanation of the service, how it works, and the type of support that you will be able to tap into. As an organisation we are very excited about the potential benefits that this extra layer of service and support will provide to our resident population. We are still earmarking the 1st of October, 2012 as the start date for this extremely important service delivery to commence. However, at the current rate that the roll-out is progressing we may be in a position to activate the service sooner.

Bentley Park Resident Reference Group Formed The judges awarded the commendation, because, in their words, the turn-around achieved by the organisation was so exemplary that it deserved special recognition. This is great validation to all the staff whom have worked so hard to achieve this great result.

During June the Bentley Park Residents Reference Group was formed. You may recall that I called for nominations in the May Tidings, and gave residents until the end of May to submit their applications to become a representative on this inaugural group. I was absolutely staggered by the response,

Bentley Park Social Club Sunday Concert - 8th July

we were literally inundated with applications. It is really pleasing to know that we have so many residents that are passionate about our village and want to provide their input into the future plans and longer term developments of this site. The only trouble with receiving so many applications, is determining the final numbers. Ideally I was looking for a group of no more than 10 residents, anymore and it becomes too unwieldy. In deciding the ultimate make-up of the group we sought a genuine cross-section from all areas of our Community. We also purposely looked for a mix of ages, and a mix of time actually residing in our village. Thus the group consists of some long term residents and also some newer residents. The Group needs to have diversity and we certainly have achieved that. I would like to personally thank all those residents that took the time to submit an application. The Resident Reference Group for Bentley Park will hold its first official meeting in July, and I am pleased to advise you that the group consists of the following residents; Nancy Coe, Maureen Thompson, Don Pederick, Carol Wellstead, Tom Brazier, Sue Griffiths, Jim Leavy, Doug Warnes, Pam Seager, and Ivor Roberts. This Group will be used as a sounding board for ideas and thoughts that will be fed into the planning processes for the next stage of the Bentley Park redevelopment. Part of their role will be to also talk to, and gather ideas and thoughts from the broader resident community, so if you get an opportunity in the coming months please feel free to have a chat with any one of these Reference Group members and pass along your thoughts and ideas. Our Longest Serving Employee of over 32 years, Mike Sullivan is getting close to hanging up his boots. Mike is going on a well-earned Long Service Leave break as from the 29th June, and he has formally advised me that he will be looking to retire sometime in October, at the conclusion of his leave. I am letting residents know of his impending retirement in advance and assure you all, and indeed Mike, that he can’t slip away that quietly. Mike has been an absolutely wonderful employee, and he has given his heart and soul to SwanCare Group – for more than half his natural life in fact. We will be planning a major farewell for Mike, and indeed, he will be the main feature of a future edition of Tidings. So for now, Mike, we all wish you a fantastic, safe and enjoyable Long Service Leave, and we all welcome your return when we can provide you with the send-off and accolades that you truly deserve. Mick Harrison will be taking over from Mike, and we have employed a new electrician Wilhelm Kotze who will take on the work load that Mick was looking after.

July marks the beginning of a new Financial Year, and with that comes budget time, and yes, you guessed it, a review of the fees and charges. Our CFO, Garry Black has been burning the midnight oil, and looking to balance the books to ensure that we can remain sustainable, viable, and yet still provide and maintain all the amenities and facilities that are such an important component of our Community. To achieve all this, we have had to increase our fees, and for 2012/13 residents at Bentley Park will be facing an average 3% increase to their current charges. This is sadly unavoidable, and simply part of making sure that we can keep our head above water.

CEO’s Report 3 Year Accreditation Confirmed Towards the end of May we underwent accreditation audits at all three of our residential care facilities (RCF’S). We have now received formal confirmation from the Department of Health and Ageing and the Accreditation Standards Agency that we have achieved full three year accreditation status at all of our RCF’s. Not only did we achieve compliance in all 44 of the Quality Standards, but we also received Best Practice commendation in the areas of our Pain Management Clinics (essentially a physiotherapy and relaxation program for our residents), and also for our Food Service, particularly in the area of menu choice and flexibility of service options. In honour of this wonderful achievement, and to pay tribute to our staff for their hard work and effort, it has been decided that in July we will hold a special presentation ceremony of the certificates. I have only just barely scratched the surface with the activities for June, and realise that I am quickly running out of space, let me therefore proceed to quickly finish up this month’s article with the following snippets, as follows… •

Bendigo Bank – seeking to become a Community Partner. A delegation from the Bendigo Bank met with the Executive team during June to discuss opportunities for the Bank to become more involved in aspects of the Bentley Park Resident Community. Essentially they operate on a “quid pro quo” type of basis whereby for every new customer that they can attract they will, as governed by their community charter, contribute a certain percentage value back into the community from whence the deposits have originated. A representative from the Bendigo Bank has been scheduled to present to the residents at the next VRAC meeting.

During June I had great pleasure in meeting with a delegation of residents from our Southern neighbour Community, Australind Rise. The community at Australind is looking amazing, and the soon to be completed Functions and Community Centre,

Introducing a retirement community lifestyle with a money back guarantee. Conditions apply.

is going to be one of the premier facilities of its kind. I have seen many Retirement Villages over the years, and the Functions Venue that will soon be completed at Australind Rise is right up there with the best of them. The residents at Australind have settled in well, and although the village is still in its infancy, I can see already that it is going to be a very vibrant and exciting place to live. If you are driving past at any time in the future please call in, I know that there will be a friendly welcome for you and a good cup of tea will be guaranteed. I should also take this opportunity to inform you all that we now have a new staff member at Australind, taking our tally of employees to two. We all know that Margaret Robinson is the Village Manager and has been doing this for some time now, but I want to take this opportunity to welcome Kevin Ding to the team. Kevin is our new Maintenance and Facilities officer, and what makes this even better, is that he is also a resident at Australind Rise .. welcome aboard Kevin. And finally to finish off this month I would like to send a special tribute and congratulations to the following couples who all celebrated significant anniversary milestones during June, Brian and Sandra Dale – 50th Anniversary on the 9th June Albert and Marjorie Hartley – 65th Anniversary on the 14th June Terry and Stella Nangle – 60th Anniversary on the 20th June Terry and Beryl Luckman – 60th Anniversary on the 21st June That’s it for this month, see you around the Village …. Graham Francis – CEO.

Bentley Park News Hospitality Services SwanCare Group Hospitality Services provide Cleaning, Laundry and Food Services to our Aged Care Facilities and also to all our Residents in our Independent Living Units at Bentley Park.

Seniors Safety & Security Rebate The recent Stage Budget announcements included “Seniors - extension of the Seniors Safety and Security Rebate”. The Department of Communities, Seniors’ Office have advised that the Seniors Safety & Security Rebate scheme has been extended until March 2013.

In light of the ever increasing costs associated in providing these services over the past 12 months, unfortunately we can no longer sustain the current pricing. Therefore, it is necessary that changes be made effective from 9th July 2012. New pricing of ready-to-eat-meals, please see contact staff at Spritz or phone 6250 0163. Hourly rate for cleaning will remain the same. Pricing for laundry will remain the same. On behalf of all the Hospitality Staff, thank you for your continuing support and we look forward to seeing you when we are out and about performing our tasks. Yours sincerely, Kym Werner, Manager Hospitality Services

Bentley Park Show 2012 The Schedule for this year’s Show is now complete and will be distributed this month. By now, most areas within the village will have been visited by our team selling the fund raising chocolates. Thank you to all of you who have made a purchase – this greatly helps towards the cost of prizes trophies and certificates. Also a big thank you to all of our hard working committee and last, but certainly not least, to Ronnie at Administration reception who has once again assisted willingly. If we missed you when we called, you may still not too late to purchase some from her. Also a big thank you to residents who have made donations - we have endeavoured to include an acknowledgement of these in the Schedule but apologies in advance for any we may have missed mentioning as some were too late for our printing schedule. Please remember to tell all of your friends and family the dates of the Show – Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th October, so they can put them on their calendars now and can plan a visit to you and the Show for some time that weekend. We will be having our usual Sausage Sizzle and Devonshire teas for their enjoyment, as well as several demonstrations over the weekend. Bentley Park - Rowethorpe Almost daily we hear of break and entries. The television shows us vicious attacks made on elderly people because we are easy targets. Although our Security Guards do their best our village covers a wide area, so we need to help ourselves, by keeping doors and windows locked at all times, and looking after our neighbours and reporting to Security anything that seems suspicious. The number to ring for Security is 6250 0020. As I was unable to attend the June meeting I thank Don Pederick for standing in for me. The next meeting for delegates is Wednesday July 11th. Tony Ryder, Coordinator

The Lifestyle staff headed by Annemarie Kluvers would like to send a very big thankyou to staff, volunteers and residents for their donations and assistance in the first Annual SwanCare Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea’ that was held in the Kingia Concourse on Thursday 24th May. With the help of everyone who attended, a total of $621.65 was raised for the Cancer Council. It will be great to see if next year we can raise the total. It was wonderful to see the morning tea so well attended and enjoyed by staff, residents and their families. There was certainly lots of yummy cakes and biscuits to give us an energy boost for the rest of the day. The Lifestyle staff dressed up for the occasion and the guys looked great in their sequined blue hats and who could go past Jasmine and Connie without a giggle at their duck headwear. The Lifestyle staff would also like to thank Don Douglas for providing the entertainment and a generous donation on the day. The following is taken from the Cancer Councils website giving information on how the money raised goes to help the fight against cancer. Anyone at any time throughout the year can make a donation online by going to: www.biggestmorningtea.com.au - and clicking on the link to donate online. 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85. Here’s how every cup counts: $5 Can help us give a newly diagnosed cancer patient important support and information resources to help them through their cancer journey. $10 Can help offer free exercise programs to help cancer patients build strength and fitness during and after treatment. $25 Can help transport cancer patients to and from hospital for treatment. $50 Can help the Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20 provide free and confidential information and support on all aspects of cancer. $100 Can help provide free accommodation to cancer patients, their families and carers during treatment. $500 Can help fund ground-breaking research into new and better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer.

The Op Shop and Recycling Both these services and fundraisers are continuing to progress well with the assistance of a staunch band of volunteer helpers, so they are able to provide an essential part of the funds used for the benefit of the Village. However, would you all please, please ensure that newspapers and aluminium cans are still available for our own recycling purposes, even though the recycling bins have now been circulated – otherwise we will lose a substantial amount of useful funds for Village activities?

Residents Advisory Council - Brian Dale We are at the mid point of our representative year and our thoughts are turning to the composition of our (new) council in November when the two-year terms of office of three of the current six members expire. At least one of these Councillors has signalled an intention not to re-nominate for re-election. Are there any benefits for being a member of the VRAC? Yes, of course. Both pride and pleasure in the opportunity to listen to ideas, issues and complaints voiced by Residents which are then able to be rationalised and discussed with Management and the Board. A satisfaction in providing the ‘soundingboard’ necessary which leads to resolutions and better understanding of the sometimes complex nature of activities of our daily Village life. And an ongoing ‘personal learning experience’, from which we all derive great benefit. Well, you can see where this train of thought is leading… If any of these benefits appeal to you, please START to give consideration to nominating later this year to become a member of the Village Residents Advisory Council. For starters, why not have a chat to any Council member and you may be surprised by how relaxed and unstressed they are with their role and responsibilities. A couple of them even believe it is their ‘elixir of youth’, surely a good thing for Senior Citizens! The VRAC meets on the third Tuesday of every month (except December) at 9.30 am in the Auditorium. All Village and Care Centre Residents are invited to attend and participate in the meeting. Please feel free to contact any member of the Council on any Village issue or concern. Brian Dale, Chairman, ph 6250 0538 Carolyn Wellstead, Vice Chair, ph 6250 0505 Cath Devereaux, ph 6250 0407 Ken Sinclair, ph 9361 0131 Shirley Barnes, ph 6250 0558 Tom Brazier, ph 6250 0496 Brian Dale, Chairman Village Residents Advisory Council

Theatre Go-ers Club Our night in June we went to see “Aida” a great production, a younger cast with lots of talent, I hope you enjoyed it. We are off to K.A.D’s in Kalamunda to see “Private Lives”, a comedy by Noel Coward on Friday 10th August 2012. Private Lives is a 1930 comedy of manners in three acts. It focuses on a divorced couple who discover that they are honeymooning with their new spouses in neighbouring rooms at the same hotel. Despite a perpetually stormy relationship, they realise that they still have feelings for each other. This is a Chicken and Chip night before the show. Tickets are $25.00 each and includes: Chicken & Chips only Theatre Ticket Sherry, Port, or Juice before the show. Tea & coffee available at the interval. Bus pick up & return

Our outing for July will be at the Lynwood Tavern, Ferndale on the 10th & 17th July 2012. There is a 3 course meal for $14.20 (at the time of booking) there could be a small increase on arrival, apart from the 3 course menu there are many other meals to choose from. Bus pick up from 5:30pm. Please book early so I can arrange bus drivers and bus lists, you don’t need a partner as there will be 42 friendly villagers to welcome you. Contact Lorraine on 6250 0425. 13 Wootliff Way.

Bookings open at the JP Stratton Centre on Monday 9th July at 9:00am. Bookings with payment only!! All residents of the Village are welcome to join our Club. No membership fees. Just give me a call. Until Next Month Beryl Davis, Ph: 9355 4795

Unfortunately Julia Atkinson – General Manager Aged Care Operations was unavailable to be with us at our last meeting due to other commitments, but we are hoping she may be free to come along with AnneMarie at our July meeting. Mr Graham Brown from “The Zoo to You” did a presentation in June which was very enjoyable. Donations for animal sponsorship were made by many of our individual residents. Graham gave us a comprehensive coverage on the zoo operations of animal acquisitions, their care and the commitment of keepers much of this background is not realised when we actually visit our wonderful Perth Zoo. Welcome back to Len and Eileen who have rejoined the club after a 12 months absence. Numbers are still low but seem to be improving - must be the weather! We still are the cheapest and friendliest internet access around, so make the most of what we have to offer. We are located on the 2nd floor of the Administration building in an air-conditioned room so it is never hot or cold, the membership is only $10 per annum and each session only $2. There is an experienced facilitator available at each session to help those who want it. We also run a special class for beginners. If you do a lot of keyboarding, I can give you a sheet of shortcut keys that are very useful - just send an email to: jocar@ bentleyparkestate.com.au and I will forward you a copy (electronically, of course!) SWAN BOWLING CLUB Last month the warm weather was still with us, but winter has now well and truly set in and our playing days have been interrupted due to wet and damp conditions. Since last month’s Tidings, the “Keith Withers Shield” was played on Saturday 20th May. Thanks are due to Ernie Cole who presented a resume to those present of the good works and efforts put into the Club by the late Keith Withers. The winning team on the day were Tony & Barbara Ryder, Peter Graieg and Terry Luckman. On Saturday 16th June, Club Day as usual, some 20 odd brave hearts played out the afternoon games in drizzling conditions, but a climax to their efforts was enjoyed with a hot “Soup & Bun” evening that followed. This social event was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended and I personally want to thank Fran for the delicious soups and all the members that pitched in after and cleaned up, replacing everything.

The Annual Club luncheon to be held at Kingia on Friday 10th August. Unfortunately we cannot give actual costs yet. So please keep a lookout on the Notice Board for details. Congratulations and best wishes to Terry and Stella Nangle and Terry and Beryl Luckman, both couples celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on the 20th June.

We meet each fortnight on Thursday mornings at 9.30 am in the Committee Room on the second floor of the Administration Building. One or two new members would be welcome; there are no fees, all you need to do is to bring a piece of your writing to read. Anyone interested would be welcome to come and listen to the readings before deciding to join us.

Finally – Our sympathy to Sheila Cooney on the recent loss of her husband.

The meeting for July will be on Thursdays 5th and 19th at 09.30 am.

We are a group of friends who write for our own pleasure. We meet to share our work and our ideas, and to offer suggestions to fellow members in a non-critical way that helps to improve their work. Most members write about their memories from years ago, and some write parts of their life stories. Some interesting discussions are had following the reading of the work.
