Across My Desk CEO’s Report We can finally say goodbye to the last of winter, and welcome in the beginning of spring. Already the days are getting warmer, and it won’t be too long before we can discard our winter attire and set our sights on more balmy nights and enjoy the wonderful climate we have here in the West. For those lovers of AFL, of which I am a confessed fan, September is also finals month, and I hope your team will be doing the right thing for you in September (go Eagles). To keep the footy theme going let me kick off with a sporting related article ….
Kingia / Tandara Olympics

Well we all know that in August the world turned its attention to London for the games of the 30th Olympiad, but here at Bentley, for a brief moment, we turned our attention to the Kingia / Tandara Olympic Games. Now the Olympics held in London showcased many fine athletes and amazing feats of skill and endurance, but this pales into minor significance when compared to the skill and dexterity displayed at our event – the SwanLympics. I bet you didn’t see one athlete in London, toss the bean-bag, catch the bubbles, or

throw the straw – well you certainly did at ours. These special events bring a great deal of enjoyment to our residents in care and I want to say a huge thank-you to our Activities staff and their merry band of support volunteers who worked really hard to make this event a memorable one for all that took part.
The Complexity of Our Business The complexity of our business was perfectly highlighted during the month. We walk a tight-rope of balancing our income with our expenses, and this was never more evident when in August we achieved a major financial windfall with an important decision to change banking partners, only to have the gains of this decision snapped up almost immediately by Government cut-backs to our income and the impost of increased costs. Let me elaborate. This month the Board of SwanCare Group undertook the difficult, complex and challenging task of reviewing its banking arrangements. This is a process which the Board considered at great length, and after much discussion and debate chose to realign our banking arrangements with a new financial partner. This new arrangement, as mentioned above, has a very positive impact on the financial bottom line of the organisation. This is very timely indeed, because the savings generated by the new banking arrangements will be used to offset the Government’s cut back in our

Aged Care funding, and the increased costs, primarily wages and utility expenses, which the organisation is being faced with.
Accreditation Celebration On the 24th September, we will be hosting a special celebration morning tea event to congratulate the staff at our three care facilities of Waminda, Tandara and Kingia on the exceptional manner in which they achieved their respective three year accreditation. This event will be attended by Ben Wyatt MLA for Victoria Park, who will present the accreditation certificates. This is a wonderful achievement for SwanCare Group, and we are very pleased to have Ben Wyatt take time out of his extremely busy schedule to make this special presentation.
SwanCare Group Charity Golf Day How quickly does this major fund raising event come around. It only seemed like yesterday when I was teeing off on the water laden 17th keenly eyeing off that coveted hole in one glory, only to see my golf ball succumb to the ever so present water gods …. Maybe this year it will be different. The SwanCare Group Charity Golf Day has become somewhat of a tradition, and we continue to get a good representation from our suppliers who proudly support this event. We have raised close to $50,000 as a result of these days, with all of the funds going directly back into much needed village amenities and facilities. We are aiming to raise over $10,000 this year. By the way …. we are still looking for two residents who are handy with the golf clubs to come forward to help form a Bentley Park Residents Team. Continued Page 3

CEO’s Report We have never had a team made up solely of residents and we would really love to achieve that milestone this year. There will be NO CHARGE for residents and it is a great day. Investment Scam – Warning I have been alerted to an investment scam which is sadly doing the rounds and is targeting, seniors, mainly males, over the age of 50 years. It has been more prevalent on the East Coast, but this isn’t to say that it won’t find its way over here. Below is an extract from accounting firm Haines Norton. The Australian Crime Commission (ACC) and the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) have recently published details about a sophisticated investment scam targeting men over 50, who are highly educated and with high levels of financial literacy. The scam is focusing on those people with private superannuation funds or amounts of excess cash. According to the report, between January 2007 and April 2012 more than 2,600 Australian investors were victims of these scams with approximately $113 million in savings lost!
A Huge Thank-You To Our Residents As we all know, earlier this month we paid fond farewell to Maxene who, after 17 years working with us, decided to call it a day. The staff had the opportunity to share a farewell lunch with Maxene, and whilst the occasion was very sad, we celebrated many fond and cherished memories. The lunch was capped off in tremendous style when Maxene was presented with her farewell gift from the residents. She was knocked off her feet and literally lost for words with the enormity of the generosity shown by the Bentley Park village residents. For those who don’t know, your donations to Maxene’s gift amounted to $2,000.00, which was put to a Travel Gift voucher. This money will allow Maxene to undertake a trip that she has always dreamed of doing … a trip on the Ghan.
Another Centurion In Our Midst I have pleasure in wishing Mr (Bill) De Burgh a memorable 100th birthday. He will be celebrating this fantastic milestone on the 2nd September. Happy birthday Bill. And finally, I would like to close out this month’s Tidings with a tribute to a very special man.
Always please be particularly aware of people promoting overseas investments or requesting that you send funds overseas. A general rule of thumb, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is (too good to be true)!
Visit to Australind Rise The Executive Team, on the 20th August, had an extremely pleasurable visit to our South West community Australind Rise. The visit enabled the Executive to have a very productive meeting with the residents at Australind, whilst at the same time we were given a tour of the recently finished Leisure Facility. I must say that the community is looking exceptional, and the leisure centre is a great asset that sets off the entire village. Australind Rise is just about to embark on a new advertising campaign that will see a re-launch and a re-energising of the village. I encourage visitors from Bentley to call in and view the new community facility, and like me, I am sure that you will be suitably impressed.
Vale David Harvey On the evening of the 20th August, David Harvey sadly passed away. David was a great man and has been a source of knowledge, guidance and influence to many residents, staff and indeed Board members over the 12 years that he has resided here at Bentley. David spent many years as the Chair of the Village Residents Advisory Council, a position he held for some 6 years. He was instrumental through his Chairmanship of the VRAC and his David Harvey involvement with the SwanCare Group Board in helping to shape the internal politics of our village here at Bentley – no mean feat. He was asked on numerous times to help solve many difficult issues, which he did in his usual forthright, balanced and decisive manner. He was a pleasure to work with, and David was more than just a resident here at Bentley, we indirectly became work colleagues, but more importantly, we became good friends. David was remembered by friends and family at a private memorial service held at the Kingia Swan Room on the 24th August. In David’s typical style, which demonstrated his wonderful sense of humour and wit, he said to me, as he was planning his arrangements for his own memorial service, “Graham, I would like my memorial to be celebrated at Kingia with a BBQ and a beer, but I will be noted as an apology.” RIP …. Stratton Luncheon/Concert
Bentley Park News Bentley Park Show 2012 Entries for this year’s Show have already started coming in – thank you to the “Earlybirds”. Entries close on 19th October, so there are only 7 weeks to go. Due to the amount of time it takes to sort and record the sheets, no late entries can be accepted. A big thank you to all residents who have made donations of trophies or raffle prizes since the schedule was printed. All have been acknowledged and will be included on the list of donors to be displayed at the Show. Thanks also to those who have volunteered their assistance during the show – if you would like to help also for an hour or so during the weekend, please do not hesitate to give Beryl Davis a call on 9355 4795, or contact myself or any of our committee members.
Bentley Park - Rowethorpe Our Security Guards must be doing a good job, as we have not had any reports of break and entry over the last weeks. It is up to all of us, to be aware of any suspicious activities occurring around the village, and report it to admin or the Security Guards. Also please look out for your immediate neighbours, if you haven’t seen or heard them, and know they should be home, go and see if they are needing help. Many residents now have medic alert bracelets or chains which are a great help, but occasionally we are unable to reach them, an example is when we are showering. We will again be holding a raffle with a great range of prizes. Tickets at $1 each will be sold outside the Swan Grocery Store on the Fridays and Saturdays of the two weeks prior to the Show and also in the Auditorium during the Show. The Show will be open for admission on Saturday and Sunday 27/28 October from 9.30am to 4.00pm. The Official Opening and presentation of Trophies will take place on the Saturday at 2.30pm. Remember, admission is free on both days so keep some time free that weekend and tell all your family and friends.

Shirley & Peter Brunt host a Luncheon and Concert at the Stratton Centre on the 1st Friday of each month from 11:30 – 2:30pm. This includes a Fish & Chip luncheon, wine, beer and soft drinks, a 1hr concert by quality performers and afternoon tea or coffee and cakes. The cost is $10 all inclusive. Residents Advisory Council - Brian Dale
Much of what is discussed at a Board meeting is necessarily confidential but I feel that I am not disclosing too much information by revealing that this decision will benefit SwanCare, (and subsequently, its residents), with a significant reduction in our financing costs, with no diminishment of banking services. I mention this simply to illustrate the unique position occupied by the VRAC in the affairs and management of SwanCare, thought to be unequalled by any comparable organisation. You can be a part of the process, a process which starts in September with the distribution of VRAC Nomination Forms. The VRAC meets on the third Tuesday of every month (except December) at 9.30am in the Auditorium. All Village and Care Centre Residents are invited to attend and participate in the meeting. Theatre Go-ers Club We are off to the Garrick Theatre at Guildford on Friday 14th September 2012 to see “Night Was Our Friend”. Ticket bookings have now closed for this night. Occasionally we have a cancellation due to illness, if you are interested just give me a call and I will place you on the waiting list. There will be NO theatre outing for October. The forthcoming outings for this year are:23rd November – “Wet & Windy” a drama at Marloo Theatre Greenmount. 7th December – “Calendar Girls” a comedy at the Garrick Theatre at Guildford. You haven’t heard fro m us in a while, so we thought it time to make contac t with Bentley Park re sid ents to let you know what is ha ppening at SwanCa re Group’s new south-west commun ity. With spring just arou nd the corner, there is excitement in the air at Australi nd Rise. After many m onths waiting and patiently watchin g the progress of co nstruction on our new club house, we are nearly there. Completion of the building is ex pected at the end of August, then we commence fittin g out the interior in readiness for the official opening in mid October. We think our club house will be a welco ming venue for us to entice our Bentley Park ‘cousins ” to venture south an d visit us. We’re working with Bentley Park Admini stration to put some plans in place , we hope, prior to Ch ristmas. Although we are a sm all community, our re sidents love to get out in the gard en and many are ve ry keen and knowledgeable gard eners. Our spring co mmunity project is to establish an orchard and vege table garden to supply fresh fruit and vegetables to th e community.
Bentley Park Social Club There have been some changes in the Social Club Committee over the last few weeks. Kath and Laurie Hudson have now both officially become members of the Committee, with Laurie taking over the role of Treasurer from Elizabeth Kroll, who resigned that position. The Committee thanks Elizabeth for her work since January and are pleased that she will remain a member of the Committee. I am also sorry to advise that Allan Manning has now retired from the Social Club Committee and from his role as Recycling Co-ordinator, due to personal reasons but he will continue to assist in future as a volunteer. The Committee accepted his resignation with regret at the meeting last Friday, and thanked him sincerely for his energy, commitment and hard work over the last months. The Sunday Concert highlighting the Town of Victoria Brass Band was, as usual, a big success. The audience was made up of those people who were willing to brave cold,
On a sunny day, you will usually encounter residents with wheelbarrows, rakes and shovels hard at work , planting, mulching, weeding and pruning towards mak ing our gardens a sh owpiece of the village, just as th ey are at Bentley Pa rk. Being very close to the Leschenault Inlet , we often have surprising visito rs. The photo is of so me who recently “flew in” fo r a stroll through the vil lage. We think they loved wh at they saw! In saying cheerio til next month, we exte nd a warm invitation to Bentley Park residents to ca ll in and say hello when next down our way.

rainy and windy weather to attend (and eat ice-creams) and it is always nice to hear that if the Committee and the musicians are willing to come out on such a day, well, others will make an effort too. Our next event is a ‘Spring Afternoon Tea’ on Sunday, 9th September, to be held on the lawn area adjacent to the BBQ and the Stratton Centre. Shade, tables and chairs will be provided – but if the weather turns inclement, please note that it will take place in the Auditorium. There will be no allocation of tables but tickets are limited and required for entry: these may be purchased in the Auditorium lobby between 9am – 10am on Tuesday, 28th August. If any tickets are still available after that time, they may be purchased from Administration but none will be sold after 3.30pm, Friday, 31st August, so that we may advise the caterer of relevant numbers.
Recycling The recycling projects are continuing to provide a solid form of income for the Social Club and our thanks are due to the small team of workers who keep the project going, especially the paper recycling.
Call for more assistance please: The Committee is now requesting that a few more people become involved so that it does not become an onerous task for anyone. There are no set times for the collection of papers from various points around the Village or the tying of paper bundles but a few hours per week from five or six extra people would certainly be most welcome . If interested in assisting for even a couple of hours per week, please leave your name and contact details with Ronnie at the Administration desk.
The Op. Shop The income has been lower than usual over the last few weeks, probably due to the cold and wet weather, and so there have not been so many visitors to the Op. Shop. However, there are still plenty of bargains available and the ladies involved are waiting to welcome you, as usual. Our thanks are also due to Terry, for his continuing assistance. The Snooker Players Association is situated on the second (Social) floor of the Administration Building. Playing sessions are held Monday to Friday from 1–3pm.
Our next meeting will be in the Auditorium on Tuesday 25th September at 1:30pm. The special guest will be King’s Park Fashions presenting their Spring/Summer Collection. You may come along from 1:00pm to view the collection prior to the meeting will commence at 1:30pm sharp.
New members are welcome and we would especially welcome ‘recently-moved-in’ residents. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played for many years, as the ‘old touch’ will soon come back! Can you help? We need help from anyone with a computer background, not necessarily an expert, who is prepared to spend a couple of hours a week and facilitate one of our sessions. All we need is someone who has experience with Hotmail and Gmail and a working knowledge of MS Word and MS Excel. It’s not hard, just helping those who have limited computer experience. We still are the cheapest and friendliest internet access around, so make the most of what we have to offer. We are located on the 2nd floor of the Administration building in an air-conditioned room so it is never hot or cold, the membership is only $10 per annum and each session only $2. The Writer’s Group We are a group of friends who write for our own pleasure. We meet to share our work and our ideas, and to offer suggestions to fellow members in a non-critical way that helps to improve their work. Most members write about their memories from years ago, and some write parts of their life stories. Some interesting discussions are had following the reading of the work. We meet each fortnight on Thursday mornings at 9.30 am in the Handicraft Room on the second floor of the Administration Building. One or two new members would be welcome; there are no fees, all you need to do is to bring a piece of your writing to read. The CEO, Graham Francis and Karen Parker attended together with 50 members, guests and a special guest was our spritely Life Member, Len Keir.
