Across My Desk CEO’s Report October has concluded, and I would have to say that this has been one of the busiest months that we have had for quite some time. There seems to be an extraordinary amount of positive things happening at both Bentley Park and Australind Rise, and in this month’s Tidings I will attempt to provide a snap-shot of the major highlights. For starters let’s take a look at the outcomes from the recently completed Independent Residents Quality of Service evaluation survey. Every day of the year, SwanCare Group employees attend work with the express aim of hoping to make a genuine and sincere difference to the people whom we look after … our residents. We think we do a pretty good job, and I know that our staff are genuinely trying to do their best for our residents at every opportunity. But, how do we actually know that we are doing a good job. One of the best and effective ways of finding out this answer, is to actually ask you, and during October this is exactly what we did. We had a marvellous response to this survey with over 55% of residents responding, which for a voluntary survey is fantastic, and certainly ensures in our mind that the answers we received are reflective of the entire resident population. We asked 6 main categories of questions focusing on the following key areas :1. The quality of our Administration services that we provide to you. 2. How we handle your complaints and general issues.

3. The Health and Support services that we provide in the village. 4. The Recreation and Lifestyle services and amenities available to you. 5. The quality of our general services such as Security, Transport, Maintenance and Gardening. 6. Your feedback on the building developments and the changes that are happening on our Bentley Park site. We also took the opportunity to ask you an open ended question about the kind of new and improved services and facilities that you would like to see introduced into your village. This provided some very interesting responses, and this data will be used by the Board and Management as key input into our future Strategic Planning and Development. Obviously a lot of what was asked for will cost substantial money and with everything it is about balance and establishing the best use and value for our money. A full list of the Top 10 wish list items is provided below.

Bentley Park Social Club Melbourne Cup Luncheon - 6th November

Overall, the survey has brought to light some very positive results, highlighting areas of strength, as well as helping identify areas where we can improve. I was particularly proud to note that in all six categories we achieved a majority response that indicated our quality of service was either “outstanding” or “very good”. To extract just one highlight, 98% of residents believed that the quality of our Administrative support to you was exceptional. This is very positive feedback, and I know that the staff were very pleased with this result, and makes them proud to know that their hard work is appreciated by our residents. Mike Sullivan Retires Our Longest Serving Employee of over 32 years, Mike Sullivan has finally hung up his work boots. Mike has been an absolutely wonderful employee, and he has given his heart and soul to SwanCare Group – for more than half his natural life in fact. We had the opportunity to farewell Mike at a sundowner held in his honour on the 12th October – his official completion date. Mike will be greatly missed, not only for his knowledge of the site, but also for his friendly smile, helping hand, quick wit and calm nature. We all wish Mike a wonderful retirement, one that is full of health, happiness and fun times. To commemorate Mike’s retirement we presented him with a travel voucher, which I am sure he will put to good use, and perhaps more importantly we also presented him with a “Key to the Village”. This key is a symbol of Mike’s years of commitment and devotion to SwanCare Group, and ensures that he will always remain part of our Community and is welcome here anytime he chooses – perhaps one day as a resident of our village … who knows.

As you are aware we were forced to close the residents work-shop for a major overhaul, and I am pleased to say that this work is almost completed, with a reopening planned for the end of November. Maintenance staff have been working with several residents to prepare the workshop for the relaunch. The workshop has almost been cleared out however there are still some lockers that are yet to be claimed. If you do have items in a locker in the workshop please clear them out by Friday 16 November. Any items not cleared by then will be considered either as a donation or rubbish and disposed of. Two residents, Jim Leavy and Carl Wieman have been working very closely with Maintenance on helping to prepare the workshop, and I would like to thank Jim and Carl for their invaluable assistance. If you would like to use the workshop once it is reopened please contact either Jim Leavy on 6250 0555 or Carl Wieman on 6250 0480, and they will be more than happy to fill you in on all the relevant details.

to discuss the plight and challenges of the Aged Care Sector. I, along with several of my managers, and other colleagues from the sector attended the workshop, and we had the opportunity to provide the Senator with our thoughts on the sector, and what can be done to help improve the long term picture. The Senator was supportive of our views and indicated understanding of the challenges that we face. She reiterated several times that her focus will be to re-align the reform agenda back onto the recommendations of the Productivity Commission. This move is roundly supported, however, at this stage it is just words, and what we really need is action – we can only wait to see.

CEO’s Report Scheduled Maintenance Program completed The programme takes into consideration general maintenance, preventive maintenance and capital improvements to be undertaken in the village. This schedule will be the basis for our maintenance activities for each subsequent year and released to residents with the budget information in June. There were several outstanding items from previous years that we have scheduled to complete this year, and these will be the first priority. While every endeavour will be made to follow this programme there may be times when the work cannot be achieved within the specified timeframe for a variety of reasons. If there is a delay, residents in the area of works will be notified and advised when they can expect the works to be rescheduled. There may also be emergency maintenance items that need to be attended to which would result in some items being postponed to the following year. Copies of the programme will be posted on noticeboards within the village. If you would like to discuss any items please contact Mick Harrison or Natalie Hodi.

On the 13th of the month we were once again joined by students from the John Curtin Weekend Volunteers as part of their annual volunteering day. We have been supporting this venture for the past three years, and we always manage to attract a good turn-out of volunteers, augmented by an equally enthusiastic team of support back-up from our own administration and maintenance.

Visits, Salutations & Special Events To start with, •

On the 3rd of October we were joined by the Mayor of the Town of Victoria Park, Mr Trevor Vaughan for his annual morning tea with village residents.

This year the group focussed on providing face-lifts to selected garden “hot spots” scattered through-out the village. Well done to all who were involved in this event, the results achieved were outstanding. •

This is always a popular event, and it is really good to hear directly from the Mayor about the exciting developments that are occurring in and around our Bentley Park community. Trevor takes the time to also take on board comments and suggestions from residents, and he makes sure that these are all passed onto the council officers for their attention and action. •

The 4th October saw a workshop held in our Kingia Concourse hosted by Steve Irons, Federal Member for Swan and Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing,

The weekend of the 20th and 21st October saw the annual South West Aged Care Expo take place. SwanCare Group was once again represented at this expo, and from all reports we actually stole the show with the best exhibit and most active display. This year we went all out to promote our wonderful Australind Rise community. From what I have been told the expo was a total team effort with all of the residents helping to provide input into the success of the weekend. In speaking to Margaret Robinson our Australind Rise Manager she was glowing in her commendation of the support that she received, in Margaret’s own words, “I felt so proud of our display at the expo. Australind Rise was a standout amongst all the exhibitors this year and attracted a huge amount of interest through the entire event. All the residents of Australind Rise deserve

the utmost of praise, you are all so special, and exemplify everything that is wonderful about our community. Thank-you so much for your help and assistance, every one of you is a saint and a hero!” •

The show theme continues and on the 27th and 28th of October we held our annual Bentley Park Show. This event showcases all that is wonderful about Bentley Park and each year leaves me amazed at the sheer volume of talent and skills that we possess within our own community. The number and diversity of the displays, local produce, art-work and handicraft that is placed on show is exceptional. The Bentley Park Show is a great event and takes many months of planning and hard-work by a very dedicated and committed show committee. To Beryl Davis and her team, we once again congratulate you on a very successful event and thank-you for showcasing Bentley Park to the wider community, you always do us proud.

To finish off this month’s article, I would like to pay tribute to our Village Residents Advisory Council (VRAC) departing Chair-person, Mr. Brian Dale. Brian, after two years as Chair has decided that it is time to hand-over the baton and will not be seeking renomination onto the council. I would just like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Brian for his leadership of the council. It is not an easy job, and through his direction he has ensured that the VRAC has become a very wellrun and organised group, who efficiently and effectively provide the conduit between administration and the broader village population. This is a challenging balancing act, and under Brian’s guidance, the VRAC has achieved impeccable results. During October we held the annual elections for the new committee, and I would like to acknowledge the returning members in Carol Wellstead, Cath Devereaux, and new member John Jacobs. They will be joined by current members Ken Sinclair, Shirley Barnes and Tom Brazier. I look forward to working with all of you and wish the VRAC for 2013 all the greatest of continued success for the forthcoming year.

Those New Twisty Bulbs

Bentley Park News Bentley Park Show 2012 By the time you read this the Show will all be over. Beryl Davis and her Committee would like to say a big thank you to all who assisted and contributed both before and during the show, and the many entrants. Also to Ronnie from Administration who never complains about the myriad of tasks she completes for us throughout the year. Mrs Thurgood’s 100th Birthday Mrs Mabel (May) Thurgood, who lives in Tandara, celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday the 18th of October. The family had organized a surprise party for her so she had no idea what was happening when Lifestyle staff took her to the Jacques centre where the party was held. When she came into the Jacques Centre all her family was there to wish her a Happy Birthday.

I have often been asked questions relating to CFL’s (Compact Fluorescent Lamp) by residents throughout the village. I hope that this information is of some help. Some time ago the Federal Government introduced legislation banning the sale of the incandescent lamp that we all have used to light our homes for as long as we can remember. The reason the Government has given for this decision is due to new environmental policies. Politics aside, Those New Twisty Bulbs (CFL’s) as they have become known are a miniature fluorescent lamp with built in electronics for starting the lamp. The CFL uses significantly less energy – 75% less energy in fact than the standard incandescent lamp. CFL’s require less wattage to produce an equivalent amount of light. Many will argue that the CFL is not as bright as the old incandescent lamp. CFL’s, as with all fluorescent lamps require a minute or two to reach their full luminance. CFL’s also produce their best results when left on for 15 minutes or longer. Switching CFL’s on and off will shorten their life and may decrease their efficiency. CFL’s will not only save you money on your electric bills, but you are far less likely to replace them so often due to their long life expectancy and also improve the environment through efficient operation. Just as a reminder to all residents if you experience any fluorescent lamps breaking in your home. • Do not vacuum up any broken glass • Avoid inhaling any dust from the lamp • Simply sweep up any broken glass • Empty contents into a paper or plastic bag • Seal the bag and dispose of in your general rubbish If in any doubt call maintenance for assistance.

It was a wonderful surprise, she said afterwards, and I couldn’t help it but had to cry some happy tears! She also commented that she is not the oldest resident in Tandara.

Christmas Lights

Mrs Thurgood would like to thank everyone for the good wishes, flowers and cards she received for this special milestone in her life.

There are still seats available for the 18th December. The Mandurah Cruises have given me till the 15th November to add to the numbers.

Stratton Luncheon/Concert

The cost is $56.00 this will cover the boat cruise, fish & chips & salad plus the bus.

Shirley & Peter Brunt host a Luncheon and Concert at the Stratton Centre on the 1st Friday of each month from 11:30 – 2:30pm.

Bentley Park - Rowethorpe As it is now only 7 weeks to Christmas we would like to remind residents that thieves will be looking for easy pickings. They know that you will have bought presents, in some cases special gifts for your loved ones, this of course is what they are after, so please be extra careful about security, do not just POP to the laundry, shop or the neighbours without locking your doors and closing the windows. The delegates of Neighbourhood Watch will not be meeting again until the second Wednesday of March 2013 and at three monthly intervals thereafter. Analog TV Switch Off It has been announced that the Federal Government will switch off the analog TV signal in Perth on 16th April 2013. This switch off will require all people who wish to continue watching free to air television to either obtain a digital set top box or digital ready television by the switch off date. Government Assistance is now available to those residents who have not yet converted, have a working TV and who receive the full rate aged pension and some other payment types. Rowethorpe Uniting Church

He compared and individually commented on last years top ten Residents ‘Wish List’ with this year’s which generated audience participation. Earlier it was announced that retiring Councillors Carolyn Wellstead and Cath Devereaux had renominated and will be joined in 2012/2013 by John Jacobs. No election is therefore needed but the office bearers will be determined by the Council and announced in due course. When you read this my period on the Council and as Chairman will have been completed. Many thanks to all for your support. The VRAC Residents Coffee Meeting is on the third Tuesday of every month (except December) at 9.30 am in the Auditorium. OP Shop The Op Shop is continuing to have really good sales, helped by the commitment of the volunteers who are there, rain or shine. Currently, there is a good variety of spring/ summer clothing available and a good turnover in items for keen shoppers.

Bentley Park Social Club The Concert on Sunday, 14th October attracted ninety nine music lovers, who enjoyed a wide range of toe-tapping songs and dance music, provided by the Storyville Jazz Band.

Advance Notice: The Op Shop will be closed between Saturday, 22nd December, 2012 and Saturday, 5th January, 2013, providing the volunteers with a well-deserved break.

The Social Club Kiosk reported a good turn-over, and the raffle tickets sold briskly, culminating in 3 very satisfied winners of some excellent prizes, so a good time was had by all.

Recycling

The great response for the Melbourne Cup Luncheon to be held on the 6th November, means the tickets are almost all sold at this date. Those attending will enjoy a 2 course meal, songs from a well-known singer, coverage of the Race, Best Dressed and Best Hat prizes, as well as raffles and, of course, the Cup Sweep. Multiple Sweeps on the day will ensure that all who wish to have a small gamble on a horse, are given that opportunity. Following on, we have the concert in December, which will be livened up by the Town of Victoria Park Brass Band playing your favourite Christmas Carols.

The very industrious Paper Recycling volunteers are being kept busy, but ‘the glossies’ are still arriving, unfortunately. The Paper Shed is currently almost full of neat bundles and the Recycling Company will be arriving within a few days to take them away, so there will be some more funds for distribution within the Village – and hopefully, residents’ newspapers will continue to arrive for the next round!

When Annie’s husband John dies of leukaemia she and her best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new settee for the local hospital’s waiting room. They manage to persuade fellow members of the Women’s Institute to pose nude for an “Alternative” Calendar. They engage the hospital porter (and amateur photographer) to take the photos. The news of the Calendar spreads.. It is going to be a delight and challenge to bring to the audiences. Come for a wonderful night of theatre, a night of tears and laughter. The tickets are available for sale from Monday 5th November at the JP Stratton Centre from 9:00am. Tickets $21.00 includes Sherry/Port on arrival, tea and coffee at interval. Bus pick up and return. The Snooker Players Association The Snooker Players Association is situated on the second (Social) floor of the Administration Building. Playing sessions are held Monday to Friday from 1–3pm. New members are welcome and we would especially welcome ‘recently-moved-in’ residents. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played for many years, as the ‘old touch’ will soon come back! This will be our last Tidings entry for the year. On Tuesday 9th October our Club played against Rowethorpe Club in Rowethorpe. We did not do too well - losing 2 games and winning one. Really enjoyed the game.

February will be our AGM and any that would like to join it would be a great time to do it. You are welcome to come up on any Monday morning see what we do and have a cuppa, the Swanmobile is a great way to get there. At the begining of October we went to the Serpentine Dam for lunch. The weather was great, it was so peaceful, and a few of us enjoyed feeding the ‘28s’. A good day out. The Administration Staff are coming to our Club to play with us on on November 7th. Always good fun, followed by eats and drinks.

ART GROUP Last week we went to the annual exhibition of the Watercolour Society in Fremantle and what a wonderful show it was! Western Australia has some great artists and we are all inspired to carry on with our enjoyable craft. The year is coming to its close and we have arranged our Christmas lunch at The Pines on the 19th November. Don’t miss out! The Writer’s Group We are a group of friends who write for our own pleasure. We meet to share our work and our ideas, and to offer suggestions to fellow members in a non-critical way that helps to improve their work. Most members write about their memories from years ago, and some write parts of their life stories. Some interesting discussions are had following the reading of the work.

We meet each fortnight on Thursday mornings at 9.30 am in the Handicraft Room on the second floor of the Administration Building. Because of declining numbers, the Group may soon have to finish; it seems people don’t write so much now in these days of texting. One or two new members would be welcome; there are no fees, all you need to do is to bring a piece of your writing to read. Anyone interested would be welcome to come and listen to the readings before deciding to join us.

A big thankyou to the Social Club for their donation that has allowed us to purchase 4 new computers to retire 4 old ones that have been in service for many years and have lived past their use-by date. We are investigating donating some of the old PC’s to Waminda for the residents to play cards on. The new computers run on Windows7 which is different in many ways to Windows XP. Come to one of our sessions and have a look at it. Bear in mind that XP won’t be supported by Microsoft after next year and all new PC’s run Windows7. Windows8 is the new Microsoft OS, but from what I’ve read so far, it has little advantage over Windows7.

As we near the end of our Auxiliary year and the festive season begins, I thought this is an ideal time to remind everyone of our fete which will be held in the Auditorium on Monday 12th November from 9:00am to 12:00 noon. Please keep the date free and watch for a notice in your letterbox!

Many thanks must go to Admin for the prompt attention given to repairing the brickwork surrounding the Bowling Green.

Our final Auxiliary meeting for the year will be the AGM on Tuesday 27th November at 1:30pm sharp when there will be nominations taken for the Committee for 2013. Please try and attend. Discussions on the events for next year will be open for comment along with an over all reminder of this year’s activities and what you enjoyed, would like to have etc. Give it some thought new input always welcome.

As I will be away from October 31st until February 4th the Vice President Tom Brazier will be taking over the reins, thanks Tom. October 17th was another Gala day, this time the George Rowe Perpetual Shield was played. The winners this time were the team Skippered by Maureen Waller Second Nancy Brazier Lead Roger Hayes, congratulations. Also our rivalry with the Under Croft, continues, the Match committee has arranged for this game to be played on home [TURF] on November 3rd.

SCRABBLE CLUB

The Patrons Shield was played on the 22nd of September. The weather was kind to us, and 8 teams participated, the eventual winners were the team Skippered by Maureen Waller, Third Nancy Brazier Second Ted Morrow and Lead Dee Sanders, congratulations to you all. Thanks to Hazel for arranging the bus outing to Friar Tucks restaurant in Mandurah, it was enjoyed by everyone.

Can you help? We need help from anyone with a computer background, not necessarily an expert, who is prepared to spend a couple of hours a week and facilitate one of our sessions. All we need is someone who has experience with Hotmail and Gmail and a working knowledge of MS Word and MS Excel. It’s not hard, just helping those who have limited computer experience.

We are located on the 2nd floor of the Administration building in an air-conditioned room so it is never hot or cold, the membership is only $10 per annum and each session only $2. After much discussion the committee has decided to go ahead with replacing the green. We have been told that this would take place approximately eight weeks after the contract has been signed, and the job should take about one week.

Our final outing for the year was held last Thursday 18th October, when two buses took us to Wireless Hill, where we had morning tea with homemade cakes and a visit to the museum for those interested and a lovely hour on this beautiful spring day to enjoy the views of Perth, wildflowers and nature in general. It was a really lovely spot. (Great for family BBQ’s!!). as we contued on to the Kardinya Tavern where we had a wonderful meal. We will be going again, I can assure you!! Don’t miss out next time. The Tavern donated a dinner/lunch for 2 people to the value of $50 which was our raffle prize. This was won by Estelle Gadbutt, Lucky Lady! Thanks to our Events Co-ordinator, Lorraine for organising a lovely day as usual. That’s all for now – please enjoy the fete on the 12th November. Battery Recycling Thank you to all who have been recycling batteries and other items. It’s great to find that so many people are willing to recycle these items properly, instead of just putting them in the bin. It takes very little effort and is a big help in keeping our environment healthy. Since I started collecting batteries for recycling in December 2011, I have taken many kilograms of various types of batteries and other items to a bulk collection point in Belmont Shopping Centre. I take all of the following for special recycling: • batteries (all except car batteries) • spectacles • mobile phones • hearing aids • corks (not plastic stoppers) • printer ink cartridges • fluorescent light globes (not tubes).

Batteries and fluorescent light globes should not go in the rubbish bin as they contain materials which will pollute the Earth. Spectacles and hearing aids are tested and re-used for people who cannot afford new ones. Recycling boxes for these items are located in Bentley Park as follows: • East of Adie Court in Richard Cleaver Lodge near the letter boxes. • Plantation Apartments foyer and the Administration Building foyer. • West of Adie Court in rubbish rooms next to the laundries. • Drummond Apartments foyer and Mavis Cleaver Court near the notice board. I don’t get paid for doing this and it costs me nothing to take the items for recycling with me whenever I go to Belmont for shopping. Your help is greatly appreciated. Allan Manning
