April 2013 bentley park resident newsletter Across My Desk CEO’s Report Let’s kick of this month’s article on a series of congratulatory announcements:-

Congratulations First up, SwanCare Group has been advised that its Australind Rise Community has scooped the pool in the recent Master Builders Association (MBA) South West Awards. At the prestigious awards ceremony held in Bunbury on the 23rd March, our Australind Rise Community was awarded winner in the following categories:-

This news is wonderful validation for the entire team that have been behind the creation of what is now an award winning development - Congratulations Australind Rise Community. Congratulations to the hard-working committee and members of the SwanCare Group Bowling Club. During March, in my role as Patron of the Club, I had the privilege of officially opening the new bowling green, and was given the prestigious honour of sending down the first official bowl which symbolised the christening of the new synthetic surface. To my sheer surprise and delight, I did not totally embarrass myself with the bowl, and with an injection of luck, managed to get somewhere in the vicinity of the kitty.

• Best Commercial / Industrial building under $1.M – Australind Rise Community Centre • Best multi residential development over $3.0M – Australind Rise Independent Living Units • Most liveable project – Australind Rise Independent Living Units These three awards are due recognition of the hard-work, dedication and many, many months of planning that went into the development of both the Independent Living Units and the recently completed Community Centre. Whilst we have had a challenging time with the property market in the South-West, there has been no denying the quality, design and functionality of the Australind Rise product, which has been aptly acknowledged by the MBA.

The Bowling Club Committee and their members have shown great stewardship and focus over the last 10 years to have managed their club and its finances in such a way that they have been able to accumulate the necessary level of funds to finance the resurfacing of this major community asset. To demonstrate our support, and to acknowledge the broad organisational benefits that the bowling green brings, SwanCare Group administration also made a small contribution towards the capital cost of this upgrade.

Bentley Park Social Club Quiz Night - 6th April

The bowling green is a major attraction to our village, and it is the key centrepiece of our Community Centre. I mentioned in my opening address that SwanCare Group is extremely proud of this community asset, and that this facility directly contributes to the on-going success of Bentley Park in that it is a major factor in influencing the decision of many residents as to why they chose to move into our community. With regular up-keep, combined with sound operational practices this new surface will bring many years of enjoyment to a large number of current and potential new residents. Congratulations to the SwanCare Group activities staff who organised the very successful Harmony Day celebrations that were held at our care facilities on the 21st and 22nd of March. Held over two days at both Waminda, and then Kingia, Harmony Day symbolises the unique blending of cultures that we are very proud to have at SwanCare Group. More importantly, this event, serves to bring our community together as one. The Harmony Day brings together staff, residents, families and volunteers with the purpose of celebrating our unique heritage and refocussing us with the one common goal, being to “Enrich the lives of everyone in our community” – this Continued Page 3 event did just that.

Stage 5A update

CEO’s Report (continued) Congratulations to Ben Wyatt, MLA for Victoria Park on what appears to be have been a hard fought win in the recent State elections. At the time of writing the final declaration is still to be announced, however, with almost 90% of the votes counted it appears a certainty that Ben will be incumbent for another term. Ben is a good friend, and great supporter of SwanCare Group, and despite his hectic schedule he always goes out of his way to find the time to contribute and participate in our community, so it was great news for us to hear that he has been re-elected. This is due reward for Ben’s consistent hard work and dedication, and it is good to know that we can look forward to his continuing support and on-going relationship. Congratulations are extended to two couples who have recently celebrated wonderful milestones. To Mr and Mrs Cooper and Mr and Mrs Pederick who have celebrated their 65th and 60th wedding anniversaries respectively, a huge congratulations. May you enjoy many more years of wedded bliss. And … at the other end of the matrimonial cycle, congratulations are extended to one of our hard-working and dedicated employees in Paul Grzelec our IT Manager who has recently announced his engagement to partner Kathryn. We wish you all the best and hope that your lives together are full of love, fun and happiness. Some other snippets of information from our Community include:-

It has been mentioned in previous Tidings that planning and development is being undertaken behind the scenes in regards to the next stage of our Bentley Park development, being Stage 5A. This is the area of the site along the boundary of Jarrah Road, Adie Court and down to Gordon Way. I can inform residents that we are now at the stage of the process where we are looking to bring on board an architectural partner to work with us to firm up the concept and design of what will inevitably become the most significant development phase that we will undertake on this site. We have just called for expressions for interest in the architectural services. This is a very important decision, consequently the selection process will encompass detailed interview, appraisal and analysis, meaning that it will be a couple of months before we have the “right” design partner on board.

Residents of Bentley Park and Australind will be pleased to know that you can play a major part in the success of the SwanCare Feathers program. What is the SwanCare Feathers program I hear you ask. SwanCare Feathers is the soon to be released Employee Rewards and Recognition program. This program has been developed by a specially selected group of SwanCare Group personnel, and has been designed after detailed consultation with all SwanCare Group employees. One of the major challenges with operating an Aged Care business is the ability to attract and, more importantly, retain our valued employees. To assist us in meeting this challenge we have developed a unique and, we hope, attractive rewards

and recognition program that will directly benefit all SwanCare Group employees. The SwanCare Feathers program relies on employees being observed and acknowledged for providing exceptional service. This is where our residents can play their part. A major aspect of the rewards and recognition component relies on our residents, their families and indeed any stakeholder from catching our staff doing good, and via a formal process recording this action, event or activity. More details will be forthcoming as we get closer to the official launch but it is hoped that you will assist us with the success of this program by being on the look-out for outstanding service that you might receive by our employees and noting this accordingly.

Do you have a Green Thumb? We would like to beautify the area at the front of Richard Cleaver Lodge, facing Adie Court. As we have many experienced gardeners in the village with some great ideas we are asking any interested residents to submit a landscaping plan for this area. This is a great and unique opportunity to provide your insight into helping us find a solution for an area of the site that is in need of some innovative and creative thinking. There will be a prize for the winning entry. If you are interested in submitting a plan, please register your interest with Natalie Hodi at Administration on 6250 0000 by Wednesday 10 April. We will then hold a briefing session on site to advise you of the budget, area, requirements and restrictions. That’s all for this month, see you around the village. Regards, Graham Francis, Chief Executive Officer

Bentley Park News Kingia/Tandara High Care Auxiliary Our February meeting was very interesting with guest speaker, Professor Alexandra McManus from the research centre at Technology Park, adjacent to Bentley Park who spoke about nutrition, with particular reference to Seafood helping with Arthritis, heart Disease, Diabetes and Cancer. The presentation was most enjoyable with residents able to ask questions re their personal concerns over afternoon tea. We still have some of the Cookery Books for sale, so if you like one they are available from Administration for $10. So far we have received $300 proceeds from these sales which is tremendous! Thank you to John & Carol Wellstead for all their work in producing this great recipe book & to those people who contributed to its contents.

Bentley Park Show

The members voted to raise the amount of membership fees from $3 to $5 per year. Unfortunately we were not to know this before the March Tidings was printed, so please forgive the misprint in that issue.

We started work on the Schedule at our March meeting. A few changes and new ideas will be implemented. The opening hours will be shortened to 10am – 3pm and the Swanmobile will be operating morning and afternoon on both days. Now that we have mastered the recording being computerized we are able to move the Official Opening back to 11.30am Saturday, which will please most people. We will be around selling chocolates to you again in June. It will be nice and cold by then I hope – good chocolate eating weather!

Our Events Co-ordinator, Lorraine Pittaway detailed some of our coming events which should be great! Lorraine always does a great job of these events, so I’m sure you will want to join us. We began this year with an outing to the Patsy Durack Rose Garden, followed by a lovely Devonshire Tea. We then drove to Kalamunda for some fee time and lunch if you needed it!! There a couple of dates coming up which you might like to mark on your calendar. Xmas in July is being organised, date to be advised also the Spring Lunch on 5th September and of course our pre-Christmas Fete will be on 18th November. As always we endeavour to make our monthly meetings enjoyable as well. The March meeting was enjoyed by all with one of our favourites “The Zoo to You” with Graham Bow speaking to us once again. In April will be Cameo Loretta Fashions, so I’m sure you will all enjoy their presentation. That seems to be all the news for this month, hope to see you all for our coming events, new members are always welcome, so come along and enjoy while helping to make our Care Centres a better place for everyone. Your Committee for 2013 are as follows:Maureen Thompson - Vice President Ethel Sloan - Secretary Frankie Comstive - Treasurer Lorraine Pittaway – Social Secretary

Recycling Thank you to all who have been recycling batteries and other items. It’s great to find that so many people are willing to recycle these items properly, instead of just putting them in the bin. It takes very little effort and is a big help in keeping our environment healthy. Since I started collecting batteries for recycling in December 2011, I have taken many kilograms of various types of batteries and other items to a bulk collection point in Belmont Shopping Centre. I take all of the following for special recycling: • batteries (all except car batteries) • spectacles • mobile phones • hearing aids • corks (not plastic stoppers) • printer ink cartridges • fluorescent light globes (not tubes).

The St Patrick’s Day Afternoon Tea was very well attended and a good time seemed to be had by all, including the band! My personal thanks, again, to the Club Committee, who put in such a sterling effort despite some injuries and also to the volunteers who assisted on the day. Congratulations to the Raffle Winners, spot prize winners and especially to the ‘Best Dressed’ Female and Male: Maureen Waller and Ian Marshall, respectively. Below are a couple of photos taken on the day, by our resident ‘shutterbug’, Mary, and while the food was lovely as you may see by the empty plates, Laurie Hudson found it hard to find some-one to dance with him and his new hair-do.

Batteries and fluorescent light globes should not go in the rubbish bin as they contain materials which will pollute the Earth. Spectacles and hearing aids are tested and re-used for people who cannot afford new ones. Recycling boxes for these items are located in Bentley Park as follows: • East of Adie Court in Richard Cleaver Lodge near the letter boxes. • Plantation Apartments foyer and the Administration Building foyer. • West of Adie Court in rubbish rooms next to the laundries. • Drummond Apartments foyer and Mavis Cleaver Court near the notice board. I don’t get paid for doing this and it costs me nothing to take the items for recycling with me whenever I go to Belmont for shopping. Your help is greatly appreciated. Allan Manning

The next event is a Quiz Night on 6th April and we look forward to some very wise people being in attendance. Following on, is the ‘Not Spring’ Afternoon Tea, or more correctly, the Autumn Afternoon Tea on Sunday, 5th May. The Op Shop continues to add to the Social Club funds for distribution around the Village, and no doubt many of you will have already been there to inspect the winter stock now available. Newspaper Recycling also continues to add to the funds, with the assistance of some new volunteers, as well as residents of Kingia: and to a lesser extent, so does the Can Recycling. It is a great effort from everyone engaged in the recycling, especially the volunteers who spend many hours in the Paper Shed and our thanks to you all.

Birthdays for April

I have only received a handful back. Can you please return them to me. Can you help? We need help from anyone with a computer background, not necessarily an expert, who is prepared to spend a couple of hours a week and facilitate one of our sessions. All we need is someone who has experience with Hotmail and Gmail and a basic knowledge of MS Word and MS Excel. It’s not hard, just helping those who have limited computer experience. If this is you, please contact President Ken Thurtell on ph 0409 296 105, or John on ph 6250 0505. We still are the cheapest and friendliest internet access around, so make the most of what we have to offer. We are located on the 2nd floor of the Administration building in an air-conditioned room so it is never hot or cold, the

The committee are in the process of buying Bowling Arms to assist players who for health reasons are unable to bend down, we are in agreement that the green must be looked after for future bowlers.
