August 2013 swancare resident newsletter Across My Desk CEO’s Report It has been relatively quiet in our community this month. I suspect that the cold weather has been a contributing factor to this as we all seek the comfort of indoors warmth and avoid tackling the chilly outdoors unless we really need to. For my article this month I will provide you with a brief update on the progress of the Stage 5 redevelopment at Bentley Park, plus I will give you a quick summary of the residents’ meetings that I attended at both Bentley and at Australind during the month.

Update on the Bentley Park Stage Five Redevelopment We are now commencing the discussions with the architects in relation to developing the scope of the project so that they will be able to come up with some broad-brush concepts to enable a visualisation of the type of development that we are likely to see encompassing the Stage 5 area. These are very high level discussions and are a long way from formulating any of the detailed design aspects of the project. As a reminder to residents, the first stage of this development will involve construction on the land on the corner of Jarrah Road and Adie Court, and will likely extend down as far as Gordon Way. Our brief to the architects at this stage is to ensure that the apartment styled development must adapt to the existing village environment and must integrate with existing infrastructure. The development must positively address the Adie Court Streetscape and provide us with an opportunity to improve the overall look and feel of this major thoroughfare. to become the most significant development that we have undertaken on this site and it is therefore an absolute imperative that we take as much time as we need to ensure that the planning and design will deliver the product that we need, not only for todays clientele, but also for the future generations of retirees. One of the challenging tasks of any redevelopment that we undertake on the Bentley site is that of relocations. This stage is no exception. We have already begun the onerous task of relocating those residents that will be impacted by the development, and this process will continue for as long as it needs to. Over the ensuing months we will be working directly with the persons affected to develop an individualised relocation plan to ensure that the move to their new home will be an uneventful and enjoyable experience. Natalie Hodi, our General Manager of Retirement Living, is in charge of the relocations and she will of course have great support from her Resident Support team in Leasa and Heather, plus the maintenance boys will be on hand to assist as and when required. The other, as yet unresolved, relocation challenge that is part of Stage 5 is the impending move of the Op Shop. We are currently in the process of considering options for this relocation, but as yet have not settled upon a final solution. Please be assured however, that we will find an appropriate location for this extremely important and vital community support service.

Residents’ Meetings – Bentley & Australind During July I had the pleasure of formally attending residents’ meetings at both of our communities. These are very valuable meetings and always provide the opportunity for open, honest, two-way communications. These meetings provide a great forum for gathering detailed information about our communities and provides me with insights into the “vibes” of the villages which in turn allows improvements and enhancements to be made to way that we support and care for

our residents. The meetings also provide me with the opportunity to impart information to our residents that they would normally not be aware of, and from the feedback that I receive, is greatly appreciated. In terms of a brief overview, at the Bentley meeting this month we touched on a number of topics all of which generated discussion and interest from those in attendance. We talked briefly about• the Stage 5 development, • touched on the impending August planning day for our Board, • reminded residents that the maintenance painting program in the village will be starting in August, • provided an update on the very successful Community Aged Care services within the village, • thanked residents for their genuine involvement and support of the SwanCare Feathers Rewards and Recognition Program, • reminded residents about the outsourcing of Spritz and how well it is going, and, • alerted residents to the mandatory reporting requirements associated with the Motor Vehicle drivers license arrangements (more details later in this article). Being a relatively new community the meeting at Australind focussed on construction issues and matters genuinely related to the development and growth of the community. This village is slowly maturing, and at each visit there are clear visible signs that the Australind Rise Community is becoming a very desirable, vibrant and prestigious choice for retirement living. The major topic of our discussions was understandably to do with these growth and development opportunities, so naturally we spent our time discussing such things as – • the next stage of the community facility, • the selling of the remaining units, • the promotion and marketing of the community, and, • the completion of the remaining maintenance Continued Page 3 issues.

Christian Fellowship of Bentley Park We would love to see you at our Sunday Service of praise and song. We are from all denominations and would love to welcome you into the Christian Fellowship. We meet at the JP Stratton Centre every Sunday 9.30am. The fourth Sunday of each month is our Prayer & Praise service, led by members of our group. All enquiries and transport phone B. The Kingia Care Facility has the Swan Room furnished and set up as a Chapel. Monthly Church Services are held by the Anglican (4th Tues 1.30pm), Catholic (1st Fri 10.30am) and Uniting Church (3rd Wed, 10.30am), and residents of the village are welcome to attend.

CEO’s Report (continued) As a general comment, I would recommend to residents at both of our communities that you support your resident meetings, they are a great source of information and provide an excellent way to meet fellow residents and discuss matters that have an impact on each and every one of you, and if that isn’t sufficient motivation, there is always a nice cup of tea and a biscuit or scone to make it all worth while.

Village Hair Salon The village hair salon has new owners! Sue and her daughter Karyssa are now operating the salon. They will be servicing all of Pam’s existing clients and would love to meet new clients. Karyssa will also be operating the beauty salon. They will be making a few changes to the salon over the coming weeks so be sure to call in and see them.

Mandatory Reporting Legislation – Drivers License I touched on this legislation and its potential impacts at the Bentley Park residents meeting. It is a piece of legislation that has been around for some time, but has managed to sneak in under the radar. It concerns the mandatory reporting of any medical conditions that may impact or impede your ability to drive a motor vehicle. The Department of Transport website has a full list of the medical conditions that fall within this reporting regime, there is also a form that can be downloaded and completed if you feel that you need to make a declaration. It is important to note that just because you have one (or more) of the listed conditions, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are prevented from driving, this is a decision of the licensing department in conjunction with your medical GP. For those residents that undertake annual medical assessments in relation to their drivers license, then there is no need to fill in a mandatory report, as the medical assessment and subsequent report is considered to be in compliance with the mandatory reporting.

Bentley Park Show You should have all received your copy of the Show Schedule in your letterbox by now. An entry form is inside the Schedule. Please keep these in a safe place so that you have them handy for when you need to send in your entry form in October. You will notice a few changes in this years’ Schedule so read it carefully and find which sections you wish to enter. Start work on these in plenty of time to have them completed in time for the Show. Closing date for entries this year is Wednesday 16th October. Last year we had entries from four staff members. This year, with a separate category for them and Board Members, the committee is looking forward to a HUGE increase in this number. We will be thrilled to receive your entries. If you have any queries, or need help with anything to do with the Show, please give me a ring and I’ll be happy to help you. Just remember that all entries need to have been done by you within the last two years and not have been used or soiled. Joining Our Community

Our community extends a warm welcome to Mrs Judith Hall, Mr George & Mrs Joy Ride, Mrs Anne Hedison, Ms Catherine Smith, Mrs Joyce Richarson and Mrs Doris Osment.

I would like to remind all residents to keep their doors and windows secured at all times, even if you are just going to the laundry, or just popping around to the shop, it only take a young burglar who is very fit, seconds to enter your property. Remember these thugs will not hesitate to harm you if you find them inside your house.

The Coffee Club is the newest addition to the calendar of activities at Australind Rise. It began life in the clubhouse with a few residents gathering mid morning and has grown into a regular meet for coffee gettogethers most mornings. Coffee Coordinators Brian and Rhonda Zanich are extremely pleased with the popularity of the morning coffee experience as it gives residents a chance to relax and catch up on happenings around “The Rize”.

Christmas in July Christmas in July was the theme on Sunday 14th July in our clubhouse. Decorated tables gave a festive feel for residents attending sharing nibbles and drinks on arrival. Our luncheon on the day was the traditional hot roast dinner of pork, turkey and ham with roasted vegetables, finishing with plum pudding, trifle and ice-cream with all the trimmings. At the conclusion of the main festivities, an extremely grateful thank you was given to the organising ladies, Jan Harewood, Rhonda Zanich, Jan Lucas and Jan Nugent who had all been preparing our “Christmas” feast since early morning. As the day went on, the Christmas stories became bigger and louder! Around 7pm the day concluded with some of the keener residents asking when the next Christmas would be, they had enjoyed the day so much.

Winter Crops Thriving at Australind Rise The residents of Australind rise have been busy these past months creating a community orchard and vegetable garden. In our orchard we have apple, fig, orange, lemon, mandarin trees and a thriving passionfruit vine. Last summer, many large delicious watermelons were grown, keeping residents and staff very happy. Winter crops are thriving in their new garden beds. Potatoes, broad beans, peas, cauliflowers are the main vegetables, along with lettuce varieties, carrots, radish, swedes and a selection of herbs. Under the guidance of residents, Rodney and Brian, the community has been happily digging and planting and in general “pottering” around! After an hour or so, our gardeners reward themselves with a coffee and a biscuit or two in our clubhouse. This project brings great satisfaction to all involved, and is one of the first things visitors see when they drive into our village. Most remark on the wonderful idea of fresh produce for the community. We are looking forward to our spring harvest celebration.

Don’t the months fly by?!! Here we are with just four Auxiliary meetings left for this year!! This part of our year will bring us some fun times with our Spring lunch coming up in September, the Fete in November, and a couple of new visitors for the remaining meetings. Having had our dear friends, Millers, giving us a view of their latest fashions modelled as always by our very competent auxiliary members in July. Thank you all. Our “Xmas in July” event on July 25th was a great success! Great meal, terrific company and lovely venue. As usual our entertainment committee did a great job. Thank you (some photos next issue).

Then in September the meeting will present Keith Eddington “19th Century Women on Rottnest” again - should be very enjoyable. Hope to see you all there! We are now looking at speakers for 2014, so if anyone has suggestions please let us know. We have a couple up our sleeve but we would welcome any of your ideas. I think that is it for this month. I have been your Village hairdresser for 15 years and it is only because of circumstances that after much thought and regret I decided to sell my business. Mrs Susan Litis together with her daughter Karyssa have replaced me. Both are fully qualified and experienced hairdressers and I know they are keen to provide you with a good hairdressing service.

An interesting concert was held in July with music, songs in several languages, poetry and comedy from a talented group of four, in their first show. Our thanks to each one of them, for an entertaining afternoon. A brisk trade was done, as usual, in ice-creams despite the cold weather and the raffle was again very well supported.

Over the years many of you have become more friends than clients, bringing me samples of new cake recipes and biscuit recipes, telling me tales, sharing laughter and sometimes sadness. Before saying goodbye I would like to speak of my mother – whom some of you have met – and who over the years has been my support taking care of the business books. She now has a heart condition which, because of its type, her cardiologist’s prognosis is that mum will gradually weaken and I know you will understand that it is now my turn to be available when help is needed. It just leaves me to say I have enjoyed my time with you and thank all my clients for their continued patronage – I know I shall miss you but will have good memories. Lynne and Amanda would also like to join with me in saying goodbye, good luck and continue to enjoy life…

This month, we welcome back Adam Penn and his colleagues and in September is the Spring Afternoon Tea – difficult to believe that we are so far through the year already! The Op Shop continues to provide substantial funding for Village activities, including donations to the Library for new books in large print. The Paper Recycling is progressing well and the cans are due to be picked up again. I hope everyone is managing to keep warm – and enjoying the rain when it appears – and thank you for your support, even in this very variable weather. The Snooker Players Association The Association’s Annual General Meeting was held on Monday 8th July 2013. Financial and other Reports were presented and accepted. It was decided that the Annual Members fee would be $10 and the playing cost would remain at 20 cents per frame. The Annual Christmas Function would you be held at the TAFE Pines Restaurant on Thursday December 5th at 7pm and be subsidised by the Association, members would contribute $10 each towards the cost. It was decided that due to low interest in playing at sessions on Monday’s and Friday’s, organised sessions would be held only on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons at 1:00pm – 3:00pm. Members wishing to play on other days or times could make their own arrangements to do so. The Snooker Players Association is situated on the second (Social) floor of the Administration Building. Playing sessions are held Tuesday to Thursday from 1–3pm. New members are welcome and we would especially welcome ‘recently-moved-in’ residents. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played for many years, as the ‘old touch’ will soon come back! If you decide to join, the membership fee is only $10 per year and you pay 20c for each frame played. ART GROUP There was a good rollup for the viewing of a demonstration on video of Acrylic painting techniques. A good motivation to all of us to to keep on with this media. The Writing Group We are a group of like-minded residents interested in READING, WRITING or STORYTELLING. We meet MONTHLY on the FIRST FRIDAY of the month, 9.30am, Committee Room, Admin 2nd Floor. It is possible you may have an interest in WRITING, (from maybe as little as 100 words perhaps describing events or episodes in your life), or in READING, (possibly to discuss your favourite book/author/genre), or even in STORYTELLING? There’s got to be a million interesting ‘life-stories’ you could relate. (Recently one of our group told us about what it was like to live opposite a convicted murderer, another told us about his personal involvement with the building of the Serpentine Dam). SWAN VILLAGE BOWLING CLUB When you read this report, the club will have been to Greenhills for our Christmas in July lunch, it will be the first time we have visited the hotel at this quaint place, so I will let you know in the next issue of tiding how it went. On the subject of food, our annual lunch is on August the 6th at the High Road Hotel at the moment we have over 45 names so if you still wish to go please let Hazel know ASAP, we have two buses arranged, if you need to have a drink, remember the bus drivers are not permitted to have any alcohol in their system, so it’s plain water for them. Our next outing for August has been arranged for August 27th we are going to the Café on the Dam which is at Serpentine, once again more food, at this rate we will be the healthiest village around. Once again we must thank Hazel for arranging the trips for us, as Jim is unavailable for the Christmas in July outing we have Frankie driving the bus for us. Many thanks, Frankie. Our game days have been very well attended of late with almost a full complement of players, thanks to Tini and Ann for doing a excellent job. As we have not played any trophy matches this month nothing to report. The Wednesday Happy hour seems to be very successful thanks to Lloyd for organising this. As our AGM is getting closer nomination forms for the executive committee will be on the notice board please consider nominating, as we cannot leave it to just the usual people.
