July 2013 swancare resident newsletter Across My Desk CEO’s Report Well it’s the half way mark of the year and we are now on the downward side of the slope to Christmas, how quickly the year has flown by. June has always been a busy month and this year it certainly lived up to expectations. I would like to devote the major portion of my column this month to the forthcoming financial year, the current budget that we are proposing and the uncertain Aged Care operating climate that our political parties are leading us into.

It’s Budget Time and a Challenging Year Ahead June is that time of the year when we present our forward projections for the ensuing year, and in doing so assess the opportunities and challenges that lay ahead for us. There is no doubt that 2013/14 will be a very challenging year for all who operate in the Aged Care and Retirement Living sectors. The Government is presently in the process of releasing a change to the Aged Care legislation, disguised as reform initiative, but in reality it lacks much of the reform that it has set out to achieve, and actually provides no more than a shifting of the goal posts with some subtle changes to funding, which even at this late stage of the process are clouded in uncertainty and lack clarity. These changes are even more tenuous in their application given the extremely likely outcome that in September the Government of the day will be changing. The message being sprouted from the current opposition is that if they are successfully elected, then they will look to claw back much

of the changes and apply a new layer of reform, more closely aligned to the recommendations from the Productivity Commission’s report, Caring for Older Australians which hit the streets in March 2012. Given this uncertainty surrounding the reform and associated funding, it is no wonder that all of us in the industry are taking a slightly conservative approach to next year. In our case, we are using 2013/14 as a year to position ourselves as best we can for the challenging and competitive climate that will inevitably be established. It is very clear, from both sides of the political fence that consumer choice and a market driven environment will emerge as we move forward. This will represent wonderful opportunities for those organisations that are well maintained, present well, have a clear and concise service delivery model and offer good value for money. SwanCare Group certainly falls into this category, and we will be using 2013/14 as a year to ensure that we continue to position ourselves as a leading provider of Care and Accommodation services, whether it be in a residential setting or in an independent living environment. This brings me back to our budget setting for 2013/14. This is the year of ensuring that our infrastructure and support services present as best as they possibly can, so that when people sit down to make a choice about their retirement living options, or their need to seek residential care, that we, SwanCare Group, will be one the organisations at the top of their list for consideration. Some of the key highlights from the budget that will have a direct and positive impact on our key assets and service delivery are:• The commencement of the major repainting program for the Bentley site • The replacement of the wheelchair bus • The upgrading and replacement of the reticulation in the older sections of the Bentley site • Additional resident support service personnel

Community Garden Takes Shape It is really pleasing to see the Community Garden project taking shape during the month. Situated in McGrath Park on the area of land adjacent to the wishing well is the location of, what may hopefully be, one of many Community Gardens that spring up throughout the Bentley site. Christian Fellowship of Bentley Park We would love to see you at our Sunday Service of praise and song. We are from all denominations and would love to welcome you into the Christian Fellowship. We meet at the JP Stratton Centre every Sunday 9.30am. The fourth Sunday of each month is our Prayer & Praise service, led by members of our group. All enquiries and transport phone B. The Kingia Care Facility has the Swan Room furnished and set up as a Chapel. Monthly Church Services are held by the Anglican (4th Tues 1.30pm), Catholic (1st Fri 10.30am) and Uniting Church (3rd Wed, 10.30am), and residents of the village are welcome to attend.

We are all looking forward to the first crop of vegetables to emerge from this garden, perhaps some hearty winter soups may be the first menu option we all get to try.

Changes to Spritz Café Residents may have noticed already that there have been some changes going on at Spritz Café. In what is traditionally known as a “soft launch” on Monday the 24th of June, Ben Venables took over the operations of our Spritz Café, located within the ground floor area of Kingia Care Centre. Ben sees great potential in Spritz, but chose the softly-softly approach rather than a major launch as he wants to initially assess the options for future improvements and gauge the lay of the land before embarking on some of the ideas that he has in mind for reinvigorating the café. Ben is a qualified chef who has worked for many of the well-known restaurants around Perth such as the Indiana Tea House and the Balthazar Restaurant, and now we have him here at Spritz Café. So drop in, say hello, have a coffee and check out Ben’s cuisine as he works his magic for us. We all wish Ben the greatest of success. For those residents that are frequent visitors to Spritz, you will no doubt have become familiar with the friendly smiling faces of Brook and Beth, our wonderful café girls. Whilst they won’t be working at Spritz anymore, the good news is that they are still part of the hospitality team and will be enriching the lives of our many Waminda residents as the girls take up their new role within this area of our operations. The other good news is that Brook and Beth will also still be involved in the delivery of meals to our village residents.

We have received approval to screen Quartet starring Pauline Collins, Billy Connolly, Tom Courtenay and Maggie Smith. SwanCare Group Charity Golf Day 2013 The 6th Annual SwanCare Group Charity Golf Day, proudly sponsored by BGC Construction, will be held on Friday 6th September 2103 at Meadow Springs Golf & Country Club. Aged Care Excellence in Care Awards SwanCare Group – Runner up (again) For the second year in succession we have missed out on the major gong at the ACSWA Excellence in Care Awards. At the recently held 2013 Awards, SwanCare Group, being one of the four state finalists was acknowledged for the outstanding achievements made over the last 12 months in the way that we have implemented a whole of organisation solution to our employee attraction and retention challenges with the introduction of the unique SwanCare Feathers Rewards and Recognition program. The judges were very complimentary of our outstanding achievement in addressing this industry wide issue. This nomination itself, and then being acknowledged as a state finalist, is great validation to all the staff who have worked so hard to achieve this great outcome for SwanCare Group. Bentley Park News Bentley Park - Rowethorpe Garage Doors Security have been directed to contact a resident if they notice a garage door open in the evening. Residents will be contacted either in person or by telephone to advise them that their garage door is open and to remind them to close it.

Australian Red Cross In 2014 it is 100 years since Red Cross was formed in Australia. As part of the celebrations Red Cross would like to collect stories from anyone who has been helped by Red Cross through wars, cyclones, fire, floods or any other emergency. With many immigrants coming to this country over the years family tracing is also a service provided to many. If you have a story to tell please contact Phyl Leavy on 6250 0555.

Bush Poets are Back

The winner of the $20 Coles Gift voucher for May/June was Gloria Kenna. Congratulations. The library greatly values the support of the residents and with the kind donation from the Social Club and Op Shop of $2000 I am looking forward to purchasing more large prints for our village library. If anyone has any ideas of large prints they would like to see on our shelves please don’t hesitate to discuss with me. I will consider all suggestions. I am grateful for the support that has been issued to the library.

We are very fortunate to have two new groups having a display at our Show this year: Boronia Pre-release Centre has offered to have information available on Show Saturday to help us understand the concept of what goes on ‘Over the green fence’. I am looking forward to learning more about our neighbor’s and I’m sure you are also. U3A (University of the 3rd Age) will be showing us what interesting courses they have available for ladies and gentlemen of OUR age. Their range of courses available is unbelievable and I’m sure you could find something which appeals to YOU. Several of our residents are already involved with this wonderful group. Once again, the lovely ‘Ladies of the Night’ will be there demonstrating their skills with quilting and patchwork. We have one of their beautiful quilts as a raffle prize.

How long have you resided at Bentley Park? Nearly 12 months. How long have you been building dolls houses? Over 25 years. How many have you built? Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve probably made around twenty. I try to build 3 or 4 of them a year.

What do you enjoy about making them? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a hobby and I enjoy donating them to worthy charities that raffle them off. I feel life has been good to me and I enjoy being able to give back. How long do they take to build? About 8 weeks. Where do the materials come from? I purchase the kits and furniture from the Dolls House Emporium in England. The kits range between $500 and $1200. The lights and transformers are the most expensive parts. My sister Gwen in Gosford, NSW hand makes the floor rugs and pictures for me. What are some of the charities that have benefited? A range of groups including an aged care facility in Wagin, Woodanilling CWA and underprivileged kids.

Vintage Car Visit On a sunny Sunday in May, Bentley Park resident Mr Tonkin arranged for a friend to visit with his 1911 Albion Tourer. Bruce Charmicheal and his lovely wife Loraine took Waminda residents for laps around the village. The event generated plenty of interest and was enjoyed by the passengers and onlookers.

Did you know?

Well – the Western Australia Day Dinner was a great success, with good food and company, and a band which really knows how to play songs we all know and love. The ‘Floor Show’ was something different and was also enjoyable, with its Irish background. Many comments were also received on how festive the Auditorium looked, while our guests enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and were very interested in how the community works as an entity. The Committee, as usual, worked very hard: Mary and Nancy in the kitchen were ably supported by volunteer, Pat, and the four staff from the Agency were very keen to work where-ever required, with their bright and friendly manners appreciated by all. Laurie again worked overtime as barman, fully supported by Tom, while Betty and Dave did a sterling job as usual selling raffle tickets and Allan provided his usual assistance with the cleaning up. Sincere thanks to each and every one of the Committee members, and to the volunteers.

SwanCare has a vigorous refurbishment program at Bentley Park. Check out these photos of a one-bedroom town house recently refurbished in preparation for the arrival of a new resident.

The flyers for the 7th July Concert in the Auditorium have now been distributed and it should be both a little different and most enjoyable. The August Concert will also be held in the Auditorium, and an old friend, Adam Penn, will be entertaining you, with back-up again. The Op Shop is still maintaining its winning form, with winter clothing a major attraction now that the cold weather has finally arrived. The Paper Recycling firm has visited us twice since my last note, and last week again took 3.4 tonnes, but was unable to take the complete load, so another visit will be required before long. Our thanks to all who save the papers, those who collect them and the volunteers who spend many hours tying the papers into suitable bundles – a task made a great deal simpler when there are no glossies included! The Snooker Players Association The Snooker Players Association is situated on the second (Social) floor of the Administration Building. Playing sessions are held Monday to Friday from 1–3pm. After hearing from our members that this method was preferred, the committee decided to restore the flyer system. So no reason now to miss our monthly meetings! David Hawkes, ex ABC, was very entertaining and feedback from those who purchased his DVD enjoyed them. That was our May speaker and for June we had Dr Joan Pope on Music, Movement & Memories. Theatre Go-ers Club On Friday 30th August we visit the Garrick Theatre Guildford to see a comedy GOD OF CARNAGE written by Jasmina Reza. Translated by Christopher Hampton It premiered in London in 2008 and is translated from the French. It is a sharpedged contemporary comedy set in polite (or not-so) Society. A fast moving four hander that will take you by surprise. What happens when two sets of parents meet up to deal with the unruly behaviour between their children? A calm rational and civilised debate between grown-ups about the need to teach kids how to behave properly? OR an hysterical night of name calling, tantrums, and tears before bedtime? Boys will be boys, but the adults are usually worse, much worse! Tickets will go on sale at $22 each (cash with order) on Monday 29th July at 8.15 am inside the Stratton Centre near the village shop. Tickets include bus pick up & return, a reserved seat, sherry/port/juice on arrival, tea/coffee at the interval.

SWAN VILLAGE BOWLING CLUB Well here we go for the July tidings, it’s hard to believe that we are over halfway through 2013, and it will not be long until our A G M in September. This month we held the Keith Withers Shield, and once again it was a great success, the winners once again were [MEG HAMS] Skipper Terry Luckman and Roger Hayes congratulations, the runners up were Maureen Waller Dot Prue and Vi Dillon well done. The bus outing to Harvey was enjoyed by all who went, also the weather was kind to us, unfortunately there was a slight accident when one of the party fell over, she was treated at the hospital and I’m pleased to say was allowed to return on the bus. Coming event is our Christmas in July, we are going to Greenhills which is the other side of York, so please look for the notice on the board and put your names on the list, if we get enough names we may be able to arrange two buses. Thanks once again to the ladies for the afternoon tea on the match day, also Hazel for organising the outings, not forgetting Roger who prepares the greens for us. We are in the process of marking the lines on the greens so far the marking seem to be very successful, thanks to Terry Nangle, Tony, Barry, and Roger. I must remind players who are sitting down to please keep remarks to themselves while others are bowling, as it is very upsetting to some people as it breaks their concentration. Just a reminder to the committee that our next meeting is on Thursday July 11th at 9.30am.

Undercroft Bowling Club The home game against Rowethorpe was a happy and successful match. We won. We held our Championships from 10th – 15th June. The standard of bowls was very high.
