Nove mber 2013 swancare resident newsletter Across My Desk CEO’s Report For me October has slipped by in the blink of an eye, but I guess when you spend two weeks of the month on holidays, it does make the month seem relatively shorter. Without digressing too much, I had the great pleasure to spend the first two weeks of the month on holidays in New Zealand, and I must say it lived up to, and actually surpassed expectations. I have not visited a country with so much beautiful scenery and sheer natural beauty, every view was worthy of a postcard. It was good to get away, but it is also great to be back on deck. We have some very exciting times ahead and I am looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that are coming our way.

Let Me Kick-Start This Month’s Article with a Stage 5A Update We are making some very good progress with the conceptual outline of the very exciting next stage of the redevelopment of the Bentley Park site. Our internal project group has had several detailed meetings with the architects and we are now at the stage where we have come to an understanding of the layout of the development, its style and the potential product mix. Stage 5A, to be constructed on the corner of Jarrah Road and Adie Court, will be an apartment complex with a mix of unit configurations, most of the units will be predominately 2 bedroom styled with a smaller third bedroom

or a study option. A separate ensuite to the main bedroom and a second toilet, or what is commonly referred to as a powder room, will also be standard. All units will feature generous balcony areas, which will provide entertaining and al fresco opportunities. Controlled access to underground parking and elevator access to each floor will provide security and peace of mind. The units are all designed around open styled planning, with large kitchens and will feature adaptability options to ensure that longer term care can be able to be delivered into the units as and when required. The other great aspect about this development is that it will provide linkages with the existing village infrastructure, particularly to Stage 4, and the inclusion of an easy access pedestrian piazza (or promenade) will provide entertaining options for the entire village and another valuable community space which we can all enjoy. We still have a significant amount of planning work to do, and we are yet to finalise the relocation issues. These are proceeding ahead as quickly as we are physically able to, but we still have a number of residents to move and our relocation team are working diligently through this list. This stage of the redevelopment will also require that we achieve a considerable number of pre-sales, off the plan, before we commit to commencing the construction, and for this reason, we will soon be embarking on a pre-release marketing campaign to attract potential residents to take up the fantastic opportunity to acquire one of the units directly off the plans. This is a great opportunity to secure a unit before every-one else, so if residents know of friends or family that are considering a move to Bentley Park, then please refer them onto Harry Pearson, our Retirement Living

General Security on the Site Last month at the residents meeting I had the opportunity to discuss at some length the security on the site and talk to the residents about some of the issues that we have been experiencing. We are very fortunate at Bentley that we have a very good security team who work extremely hard to ensure that resident safety and security is paramount. Our level and frequency of incidents is extremely low by comparison with the outside community, and I suspect that this is due in part to the wonderful work of our security personnel and also that of our own workforce, and indeed our entire resident community. Successful security on our village is a team effort, and we all need to work together to help one another, and it is this effort that I believe continues to stand us in relatively good stead. It is important that we do continue to remain vigilant and to keep a watchful eye out for anything that seems unusual or a little bit out of the ordinary. If you do happen to notice anything irregular, please contact security, as it is important that they are aware of these matters. On the matter of security I have received notification from Tony Ryder that he is no longer able to continue to convene the quarterly Neighbourhood Watch meetings, and it has been determined by this group that the current system of all residents looking out for and educating one another is working well, Continued Page 3 and consequently

Christian Fellowship of Bentley Park We would love to see you at our Sunday Service of praise and song. We are from all denominations and would love to welcome you into the Christian Fellowship. We meet at the JP Stratton Centre every Sunday 9.30am. The fourth Sunday of each month is our Prayer & Praise service, led by members of our group. The Kingia Care Facility has the Swan Room furnished and set up as a Chapel. Monthly Church Services are held by the Anglican (4th Tues 1.30pm), Catholic (1st Fri 10.30am) and Uniting Church (3rd Wed, 10.30am), and residents of the village are welcome to attend.

The Christian Fellowship (Get Together) Meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at the Stratton Centre at 10:30am. We meet for coffee, tea & tidbits. We find plenty of things we enjoy sharing & discussing. Ring Betty Bennett – 9472 6857.

It has also been suggested by Tony, that in order to keep security and its awareness at the forefront of residents thinking that it be included as part of my quarterly address to the residents meetings, to which I am more than happy to comply with.

WA Photo Card

I have had a personal request from Ben Wyatt, our local MP, to place the following information into this month’s Tidings. Ben is a tireless worker within and for our community and I am only too happy to assist him in spreading important news that will have an impact on our residents. The WA Parliament is currently debating the ‘WA Photo Card Bill 2013’. Once this Bill becomes law it will provide for a photo identification for anybody requiring photo ID but who does not possess a driver’s licence. As people know, photo ID is required for a range of commercial transactions from cashing a cheque, collecting parcels from the post office and even giving instructions to lawyers. This new ‘WA Photo Card’ will have the same integrity as a driver’s licence. This was a key promise that Ben made as the Member for Victoria Park during the 2013 State election.

This new card will replace the ‘Proof of Age’ card and be administered by the Department of Transport. Of course, to ensure the WA Photo Card has the highest level of integrity, supporting documentation must be provided like a birth certificate and other material such as that normally required for things such as opening a bank account.

We are getting close to finalising the plans for the next stage of the Community Centre at Australind. The second stage which primarily includes the pool and associated activity areas is likely to commence construction in the New Year. Whilst on the subject of Australind Rise, we are also looking at holding a major open day in January to promote the village, and in news just to hand we have been advised that Australind Rise is once again being recognised in the 2013 MBA Awards as a nominee in the most liveable community category.

The CEO’s CEO’s Coffee club was not held in October. However the good news is that we are planning a Coffee Club excursion in November. Join the CEO for a morning coffee and cake on Friday 22nd November. The bus will leave at 10am, returning at approx. 11.30am. On the 28th September, we celebrated a fabulous milestone achieved by our resident Fitzy Taylor, another one of Bentley Park’s centenarians. Congratulations to Fitzy on this great achievement.

On the 12th of October we were once again joined by our friends from the Curtin Volunteers as part of their annual volunteering day. We have been supporting this venture for the past five years, and we always manage to attract a good turn-out of volunteers, augmented by an equally enthusiastic team of support back-up from our own administration and maintenance.

Anybody interested in further details of the ‘WA Photo Card’ once it has passed through the WA Parliament are encouraged to contact Ben’s office on 9361-1777. Ben will be in touch with me as soon as the card is established.

On the 26th and 27th of October we held our annual Bentley Park Show. This event showcases all that is wonderful about Bentley Park and each year leaves me amazed at the sheer volume of

works inside (and outside) your unit. Residents are reminded that if they want to make any alterations to their unit they must have prior approval by Administration. Forms can be found at Reception. If you desire to undertake modifications, please complete a form and return it to Admin for approval. Remember that no works are to commence until formal approval is given.

And finally for this month, our hardworking and dedicated resident support officer Leasa Horne has called it a day and has left Bentley Park. After what was a difficult decision for Leasa she has decided that she needs to focus her time on her own family and as such finished up with us during the month. Leasa has been part of a great team and has made a lasting impression with our residents during her time with us. Leasa would always go out of her way to help our residents and was never one to shy away from difficult or challenging tasks. We all wish Leasa the very best for her future and thank her sincerely for her terrific contribution to SwanCare Group.

Village News Bentley Park Show By the time you read this report our Show will be over and, hopefully, you will have many happy memories of it and already plans for what you can do for the 2014 Show. The main reason for holding an annual Show is to show what can be done with a little thought and effort and to encourage others to become involved by: a. Entering articles which can be admired by us all. b. Becoming a volunteer and making new friends along the way. c. Coming along to enjoy the company of others. d. Getting new ideas of things you could make or a new hobby you could start. I can’t tell you all how much I have appreciated your help and support throughout the year. It has been humbling for me to have so many people doing so much to make our Show an enjoyable success. Spritz Cafe Hello to all Residents & Staff. As you know, at Spritz we have trialled being open seven days for a while now. Unfortunately due to outside circumstances we haven’t always been able to maintain this. I have realised after the last 4 weeks that it isn’t feasible or workable for me to try and maintain a seven day working week on my own. As a result, to end the confusion I have changed the opening times of the café. Monday: Tuesday: Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: Saturday: Sunday:

Judy Mackintosh has been awarded a certificate in recognition of her 50 years of dedicated ACTIVE nursing and midwifery. SwanCare Group – Sprinklers To reduce water comsumption the gardeners are going to trial sprinkler use for two days each week. The area between Adie Court and Wootliff Way, plus Pemberton Drive, Le-Breton Way & Drummond Way, the sprinlkers will come on at 10pm on Monday’s and Fridays. Between the areas of Talbot Place and Hawthorne Crescent the sprinklers will come on at 10pm on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Testing of Assistance Pendants For all residents in the redeveloped areas around admin (Streets - Leeuwin, Stirling, Millstream, Solandri, Augustus, Beelu and Plantation Apartments), with a SwanCare provided assistance system, please be reminded that you should test your assistance pendants on a regular basis, at least monthly. This will ensure that any issues with batteries or faulty pendants are identified prior to and rectified before any real assistance is required.

Bentley Park - Rowethorpe Once again we have had unwelcome intruders to our village. Please ensure your house is securely locked and windows closed, if you are not at home, day or night. The delegates of Neighbourhood Watch would like to remind you all, to be aware of any strangers prowling around the village and if anything looks suspicious don’t hesitate to ring Security on 6250 0020 any time.

Farmyard on Wheels Thanks to a generous donation of the Social Club we were able to invite the Farmyard on Wheels to Waminda on the 3rd of October, Tandara on the 4th of October and Kingia on the 9th of October. Luckily the weather was good enough to be outside and enjoy some sunshine whilst holding and feeding the farm animals. The many photos we took tell the story of enjoyment, reminiscing and excitement to see (and smell!) all the familiar animals.

An instruction sheet will have been provided on how to perform testing when the system was first installed or when you moved in. If the information sheet has been lost or you have not received one, please contact reception for a replacement copy. My Trip to the North West in 2013 In May/June of this year I drove my car up through the North West of WA. My friend and I left Bentley Park on the 17th May on “the trip of a lifetime” which I had not done in 40 years. In 1973 I drove a VW Beetle up to Darwin and I was only 6 months into my driver’s license. Not too bad for a P Plate Driver? In those days they were just sealing the North West Highway. Many parts were long detours 5km – 20kms long through dry water courses (it was the old August school holidays in those days when we first did it). We also had to drive through many long patches of bushland scrub, redirection back to the main highway. It was wild and free and as long as we kept moving the fresh air of travelling kept you cool (natural air conditioning) and also kept the dust at bay, so you could breathe freely. It was most invigorating. Now 40 years on I had a nice Holden station wagon with all the camping gear and bedding in the back and I was off again to rediscover old and new venues. I still felt the same exhilaration and wonderful sense of freedom with all windows down and the wind blowing through the car to keep me cool, only this time I had a tarmac road wherever I went (out to the coast or inland). As with 40 years before I washed, paddled or swam in every bit of water I found on the trip, going natural all the way. I found many lovely beaches, picked up a shell or rock at each (just to say I had been and seen), stopped at a number of a 24hr road side stopovers (they were not there 40 years ago. Most handy. Had some lovely bonfires and music with the piano accordion on the road. I drove as far as Broome and Derby taking

many photos on the way. I breathed deeply of the magic of the landscape, which had changed very little in all that time. It is the immense purity and isolation of it all. A much rarified atmosphere. You have to travel it to feel it, know it touches you. I returned via the inland route heading south, north of Port Hedland, through Marble Bar, Newman, the people of Nullagine were beautiful, very friendly. From the Prison Tree at Derby through the Kimberley and the De Grey, Turner and Peawah Rivers. The Fortescue, Ashburton and Gascoyne Rivers and the Murchison down into Meekatharra, where I worked in 1962. (The dead centre of WA it was called then). From then on it was just a hop, skip and a jump to be home again. Mt Magnet and Cue, where I had played darts and worked all those years ago. Wubin, Dalwallinee Pithara where I first “trod the boards” with the Dally Reportory Club” at 18 years old. Miling, Calingiri, Bolgare, Toodyay, where I visited my old family home and land.

What did you do before coming to Australia? I lived in Lambeth, London. As a girl I witnessed World War One and remember taking cover in the pub’s cellar during the air raids.

Yes went back 40 years and covered every inch through childhood, 2 marriages and families, teenage years in the wheat belt then home to Bentley Park and what I am today.

Later I worked as a dressmaker. I met my next door neighbour over the fence who would later become my husband. My sister moved to

Residents Advisory Council - Carolyn Wellstead By now, everyone will have received nomination forms for the council election in November so hopefully we will have received nominations to fill the three vacancies. I have been away for most of the last month, so am a bit short of news items, but I am sure Cath has kept things running smoothly.

Our Coffee Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month at 9.30am in the Auditorium, followed by morning tea. Do come along to share in the information dispersed by our guest speakers and the

Over 120 attendees braved the weather for the ‘Family Sausage Sizzle’ on Saturday, 19th October, and enjoyed the company, the food and the band. Somehow, most of them fitted into the Stratton Centre with an overflow into the Leisure Centre while they ate, and many stayed until the band packed up. I sincerely thank the Committee, the volunteer cooks, and the other volunteers (both from inside the Village and outside) who assisted in the setting up and during the event.

Op Shop (even if unable to help on a regular basis), as some volunteers are currently unavailable. Another load of newspapers has been removed from the Paper Shed and the funds duly added to our funds. However, it appears there is a problem with staples in the inserts from the newspapers, so please note everyone, we are now asking you to remove all inserts – whether glossy or otherwise – to deposit them in your own recycling bin, before sending the papers to the Paper Shed, as we can no longer deal with them and they will not be taken away.

On Tuesday, 5th November, the Melbourne Cup Lunch will be held in the Auditorium with the Storyville Jazz Band providing entertainment around the main event itself. Numbers are definitely ‘capped’ for this event, so hope you have already obtained a ticket if you wished to attend.

Finally, if you wish to nominate someone for the Villager of the Year Award, please return your completed form/s to Administration prior to Thursday October 31st.

This is our last outing for 2013. The outing for November is on Tuesday 12th & 19th. This month we are going to the Fiery Flames Gosnell’s (Nero’s). Kingia/Tandara Auxiliary The meeting for November will be the AGM to be held on Tuesday 26th at 1.30pm. Come along and have your say in what we would like to achieve in 2014. You also need to have your input into your office bearers for the next term, so take some time to think about your nominations for all the members of the committee for the coming year. Discussions and voting will be on the agenda as well as a lovely afternoon tea. There will also be an overview of our achievements in 2013, including proceeds from the Fete which is being held on 18th November 2013.

This month we had a bus trip to Dwellingup, and a Train trip with a meal included, witch everyone enjoyed, the only complaint was the Pumpkin Soup was only warm. On the 31st of this month we hope to visit Friar Tucks at Dawesville. The Patrons Shield game was won by Tom Brazier skip, Ern Cole, Harry Popelier, & Angie Wieman, runners up were Mike Post skip, Vera Separovic, Dennis Morris, &Vi Dillon, there were joint thirds so a coin was tossed & Ken Godsmark skip, Terry Luckman, Graham Francis & Innis Moir, were successful, it was great to see our Patron Graham in a successful team. At this point I must mention that Graham was asked for match fees of $5 he gave $20 he also donated his winnings to the club $5 and would you believe it he won $20 on the chocolate wheel which he also returned. Graham very kindly gave the winners vouchers of $25, so all up he was $140 poorer, he will be most welcome next year. The Spider was won by the President who as you know does not Drink, but it will keep. Thanks must again to our Ladies who do such an excellent job with the catering, without them we would not have such a great club. The Snooker Players Association The Snooker Players Association is situated on the second (Social) floor of the Administration Building. Playing sessions are held Tuesday to Thursday from 1–3pm. Undercroft Bowling Club Coming up in November, we visit the Swan Bowling Club for our annual inter-Club Competition. This is always a day we all try to put our Best Feet forward in a “kind of” friendly rivalry!! Then we relax with our annual Pre-Christmas Luncheon on November 26th at “The Pines”.
