Well done Fre ma ntle Dockers on your great achieve ment this year!

October 2013 swancare resident newsletter Across My Desk CEO’s Report Two major highlights spring to mind as we take a look back at September, the first was the election and the emergence of a coalition victory, and second, was the football finals and the fantastic achievement of our WA based Fremantle Dockers. This article is being put to paper before the grand final so all I can say is that I hope that the results went the right way for you. This month I would like to provide you with an update of the immediate reaction to the new liberal coalition government and also provide you with a general update of developments that are happening in and around our wonderful community.

Political Update With the election now done and dusted the Aged Care sector has general cause for optimism even despite the knowledge that Aged Care will be without its own Minister. The initial good news is that the Coalition Government has immediately foreshadowed a peeling back of the Workforce Supplement to ensure that funding for wages growth will not be excised from operational revenue, and that entitlement to the supplement does not need to be tied to a union based EBA. Improved wages is a really important and key factor in helping us to retain and attract suitable staff to work in the Aged Care and Retirement Living sector. The news that we won’t have to surrender operational funding to help pay for increased wages and improved conditions is great news and is a positive initiative. Naturally the detail of the Coalition’s revised Wages Supplement still need to be unveiled, but the consensus from the sector is that this approach will receive far great acceptance and support.

Security Number If the Resident Support Services number is unavailable residents are reminded the mobile contact number for Security is:

0413 388 650

The other good news is that the Coalition has made a commitment to reduce red tape within the Aged Care bureaucracy and has also agreed to the injection of a $200 million investment into dementia research, an area that is in need of support and indeed will become a major part of the service offerings for aged care providers into the future. In terms of the lack of a dedicated Minister, this news was initially met with a negative response by the sector, however, once the detail of the new ministry was digested, there has been some softening of this negative stance and the feeling now is that the alignment of Aged Care within the portfolio of Social Services may in fact bring greater benefits and heighten the awareness and challenges of the aged sector and send a message to the broader community that aged services is far more than just healthcare and plays an increasingly significant role in the social and economic fabric of Australia. Further it has been argued that having Aged Care within the same portfolio as Disability Services will bring a strengthening of the relationship between these two essential and often complementary services. This repositioning of Aged Services, due to the alignment with Disability Services, may also foreshadow a move towards having Aged Care operate under an entitlement system (similar to the National Disabilities Insurance Scheme) and move away from the current restrictive rationing system. Hopefully these promises by the Coalition are not just words and that they will follow through and deliver these much needed changes to help ensure that our Aged Care and support services sector is sustainable and viable for not only the current clientele but also for many future generations of Australians.

Development Update – Stage 5A By now you should all be aware that the next major development on the Bentley Park site, referred to as Stage 5A will be undertaken on that land situated on the corner of Jarrah Road and Adie Court, and will run along Adie

Court to just South of Gordon Way and head back to Graham Crescent. Since the last Tidings, there has been a number of planning and scoping meetings with the architects designed at gaining a more detailed understanding of the project and formulate conceptual ideas with regards to such things as building height, density, orientation, location, generic design elements and likely product mix. A site survey has also been undertaken and this has provided relevant information to assist with design opportunities, physical orientation and staging opportunities. The next step in the process is to engage in high level discussions with the Town of Victoria Park to explore these building height opportunities, access arrangements to the site and council planning guidelines that may need to be considered. Once this feedback from Council is received the architects will produce a more detailed concept, and this will then be able to be “price checked” by the Quantity Surveyor. Whilst a lot of planning work is being undertaken it is important to note that we are still some way from commencing any specific detailed design.

Development Update – Australind Rise Work has commenced on the completion of the remaining 5 units that were left at what we call “white set” stage. This will bring to completion the first 21 units which effectively signals the completion of Stage 2. In total we now have 9 units sold or under offer, and 12 unoccupied (5 being the white set ones). The other significant development at Australind is the second stage of the Community Centre, and work is being undertaken behind the scenes with regards to the finalisation of the plans for this development and, subject to approvals from Council, we are hopeful that construction work will be able to start on this project within the next few months. CEO’s Report (continued) The Community efforts at Australind are being focussed around planning for the major open day in November and this event will also tie in with news regarding the commencement of the next stage of the Community Facility.

Community Events There has been a great deal of community activity during the last month, some of the major highlights being:-

SwanCare Charity Golf Day Once again a very successful event and well patronised. This year we had a p re Grou record entries (21 SwanCa f Day 2013 ol Charity G teams), and raised a net amount of $15,149.00, which is another record. This money, as has been the case in the past, will be used to assist with providing (or contributing to) a worthwhile community asset. At the time of writing the actual use for the money has not as yet been determined, but this decision will be made in the not too distant future.

Stay On Your Feet Day An initiative of our Allied Health and Diversional Therapies team. This event, held in the auditorium promoted resident well-being and promoted lifestyle activities centred around the theme of “Staying on your Feet”. It is part of the falls prevention strategy that plays a significant part in our care planning and activities of daily lifestyle. The event involved external stakeholders including physios, podiatrists, wellness groups and involved residents not only from Bentley Park, but also from Rowethorpe, and very importantly we were able to involve residents from our own Care Facilities of Waminda, Kingia and Tandara.

CEO’s Coffee Club This bi-monthly event is gathering momentum and residents have thoroughly enjoyed this experience of networking with a new mix of fellow residents and also having the opportunity to chat one-one with the CEO and other SwanCare support staff in a relaxed and casual environment. Keep your eyes and ears opened for future dates for this event.

CEO’s

Gardening Task Force An initiative borne out of a desire to garden has seen the formation of the Volunteer

Gardening Task Force. Essentially a group of residents have bandied together under the guidance of our contract gardeners and will undertake gardening support activities in various sections of the Bentley Village. Their work will be controlled and monitored and always will be under the direction of our contracted gardening team.

Resident Laundries I would like to remind residents that in the interests of good neighbour relations can they please keep laundry areas neat and clean and follow correct laundry etiquette. • Laundries should only be used between 7am and 7pm Monday to Saturday and 8.30am and 6pm Sunday. • Please clean the filters after using.

ToVP Mayoral Morning Tea

• Laundries are for the use of residents only.

Mayor Trevor Vaughan once again hosted his annual morning tea with residents of Bentley Park and as always this was well received by members of our community. Trevor is a great supporter of SwanCare Group and we always appreciate and look forward to his open and honest communications of the various activities and undertakings that the Council are doing within the Town of Victoria Park.

• Dryers should only be used on wet days and try to use them when there is a full load.

Kingia / Tandara Auxiliary – Spring Fashion Lunch A very well run and coordinated luncheon was held during September by the Kingia / Tandara Auxiliary. This well patronised and highly enjoyable event featured our own crop of stunning residents modelling the latest in spring fashions kindly supplied by Kimbos of Como.

General Bits and Bobs To round of this months article I have the following general items to conclude with:-

• Use timers on dryers so that they aren’t left running for hours on end.

Storage Areas Where communal storage areas are provided for residents, it is the residents responsibility to keep these areas neat and tidy. Please assist your neighbours by keeping any items in storage packed neatly and clearly marked.

Special Birthday Wishes As part of the lead up to the Federal election we had a visit from The Honourable Steve Irons, our Federal Member for Swan, and Deputy Leader for the Liberal Party The Honourable Julie Bishop. It was a pleasure to have both Steve and Julie visit SwanCare Group, and it was very fitting that whilst they were here they took time to make a special presentation and send their congratulatory wishes to Mrs Hobbs on her 102nd birthday which she celebrated in fine style on the 31st August.

CACP’s All 20 of our Community Aged Care Packages are active, and we have established a solid wait list for the provision of this service to our village residents. As from July A SwanCare Group Service 2013 the name of Care Packages has changed to either Level 1, 2, 3 or 4. Level 1 was previously referred to as HACC (Home and Community Services), Level 2 CACP (Community Aged Care Packages) Level 3 EACH (Extended Aged Care in the Home) and Level 4 EACH-D (Dementia element added). Our packages are all Level 2.

community care

It is worth noting that our fabulous carers have all been carefully chosen because of their experience and caring nature and the fact that they are all very focused on ensuring that we provide the best service and care for our residents. At times Community Care can be quite demanding and challenging and I would just like to take this opportunity to thank not only our carers for the great job that they do but also thank our residents for treating their carers with kindness and respect, it is greatly appreciated.

Julian Keys (SwanCare Group Chairman), Steve Irons, Mrs Hobbs, Julie Bishop & Graham Francis

Swan Village Bowling Club – AGM I attended and presided over the Annual AGM of the Swan Village Bowling Club during the month and was very impressed with the efforts of this group in maintaining and managing what is one of the major activity clubs within the Bentley Park Community. I was pleased to announce the new committee for 2013/14 and congratulated the following people in taking on the office bearer roles for another year, Tony Ryder - President, Tom Brazier - Vice President, Lloyd Jones – Treasurer and Barry Williams – Secretary. That’s all for this month, see you around the Village …. Graham Francis - CEO

The Delegates of neighbourhood watch would once again like to remind all our villagers about security, please remember to secure your doors and windows when you leave your home even if it is only to put out the rubbish or go to the laundry. Just recently I was walking home through Bollig Gardens at 8.45 when to my surprise one resident was sitting outside her house alone, lights on throughout the house, if I had been a undesirable I could easily have attacked and robbed her. So please think very carefully about security. If you are unsure about anyone please ring Security on 62500020 day or night. Tony Ryder, Co-ordinator

The library has been able to, with a generous donation from the Social Club/Op Shop purchase so far twenty two large print books for our library, with more on the way. These are in the progress of being processed for the shelves. A list will appear on the White Board in the library, when they are on the shelves. Is anyone out there interested in starting a book club? I was thinking of an “OPEN BOOKCLUB” where everyone reads the same book and then get together to discuss it. If so, please send me your names and contact number, and if we can find someone to run it, the club will be welcome to use the library from 1pm to 2:30pm on either Monday or Friday. I will do my best to secure copies, for readers unable to get their own....please check the libraries first. If anyone else has any ideas that the library can help with, please come in and see me. I thought some residents may be interested in the following:The Town of Victoria Park wishes to acknowledge long term residents living in Victoria Park/Bentley by holding an Early Settler’s morning tea in November for residents who have lived in the area for over fifty years. I have brochures in the Village library for anyone who is interested. Yours in books Penny, Bentley Park Librarian

I have been speaking to residents regarding the new bus shelters and seating on Adie Court and they expressed concern about the orientation of seating and the permeability of the shelter screening. I am committed to ensuring that residents have in place safe and secure public transport infrastructure that not only suit their needs but also enhances the overall amenity and presentation of the area. In relation to the seats, they were installed in Adie Court initially as a temporary measure whilst the hardstands and shelters were being replaced back in June 2013. Residents requested these seats remain however they are orientated in a way that has caused some concern. I have spoken to our Street Improvement Staff who have advised that over the next two (2) weeks, they will ensure that the seats are all placed parallel and facing the roadway as residents have requested that they remain on-site permanently. In relation to the installation of the mesh on the bus shelter side panels, staff will also assess the need to modify them so that it provides better weather proofing for patrons. Would you please circulate this notice to people in the village and I will keep you informed of the progress. Please contact me should you require additional information or would like to discuss this matter. If there are any other matters you would like me to raise with our staff please let me know and I will follow them up. Thank you. Yours faithfully Cr David Ashton Councillor – Jarrah Ward Town of Victoria Park

Residents Advisory Council - Carolyn Wellstead

I would like to remind residents that elections to the VRAC will be held in November and three council members have resigned their positions. They can, of course, nominate for re-election but we encourage other residents to also nominate, as new blood on any council is desirable from time to time. As members of the council, one gets to meet with management each month and thereby gain a broader knowledge of how our village operates. The Chairperson and Vice Chairperson

also are able to attend SwanCare Board meetings, a privilege that the VRAC values highly. These positions are also elected on an annual basis, so if you feel you would like to get more involved with the council, please do “put your hat in the ring”, so to speak. Our Coffee Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month at 9.30am in the Auditorium, followed by morning tea. Do come along to share in the information dispersed by our guest speakers and the social interaction among residents. If you have any queries, please do contact one of the council members listed below and we will do our best to provide an answer.

The Spring Afternoon Tea in September was a really lovely afternoon, with good food and everyone enjoying the company. A short ‘sing-a-long’ accompanied by Laurie on piano was well received, as were the raffles and spot prizes.

kept things up and running over the last few weeks. Another load of Newspapers is to be moved in the next few days and thank you to the stalwarts who attend the Paper Shed in all weathers, to keep the bundling-up under control.

Our next event is a ‘Family Sausage Sizzle’ on Saturday, 19th October in the BBQ area. While it is at no cost to attendees, to assist with the catering we request that residents expecting to attend, please visit the Administration Lobby on Monday, 7th October between 8.30am – 10.00am to provide a family name and the expected number of family members likely to be present. Sausages and buns, salads and sauces will be available on the day but please BYO other items. The Gumnut Stompers will entertain you and there will be raffles.

A final item to bring to your attention this month is the Villager of the Year Awards. This year we are putting notices on all the usual notice boards with a supply of Nomination Forms, which will be replenished as necessary, for your convenience. Please return your completed forms to Administration prior to Thursday October 31st, for judging during November and awarding on International Volunteers’ Day, here in the Village on December 5th, 2013.

The Op Shop is still prospering, but Beryl is slowly recovering from an accident, and we send both her and Terry our best wishes and hope to see you about again very soon. Our thanks to the volunteer staff who have

Swan Village Bowling Club This month has passed so quickly for me if it hadn’t been for Ronnie reminding me there would not have been a report. As our year came to an end in September, not much was arranged, no Trophy games, also the weather has not helped. The only event was our outing to the Café on the Dam, which was once again a success, thanks Hazel. On the 12th of September we held our AGM our Patron Graham Francis acted as returning officer, he had a very easy job as all the committee except Maureen, were re-elected, her place was taken by Joy, welcome to the committee. Thank you Graham, for your time, and most welcome remarks about our club, and committee. The good news is our next Trophy day is on the 25th September and Graham is going to play in one of the teams wouldn’t it be great if he was in the winning team. The club has another new member this year, welcome to Ken Godsmark, he will certainly be a great asset to our bowling teams when playing the Undercroft. I have arranged a trip to Dwellingup, we are going to have a dinner on the train, and as it is quite expensive it was open to anyone, but it is mainly the bowlers who are going, we will be leaving here at 5pm and returning approx. midnight so I hope we all have late night passes. The next committee meeting is to be held on Thursday November 21st. Enjoy your bowling Tony Ryder, President
