Dece mber 2013 swancare resident newsletter Across My Desk CEO’s Report As we enter the festive season, I see evidence of the spirit of friendship and community across our Community as many of our clubs and groups enjoy their respective Christmas and end of year celebrations. One of the advantages of being a large Community is the diversity of the social and recreational choices that our residents themselves over the years have introduced. We have exceptional talent and commitment within our residents, whether it be here at Bentley or down south at Australind, and this directly contributes to the wonderful lifestyle for which we are renowned.

Our Volunteers are Special People As is our tradition, during the first week of December each year we celebrate International Volunteers Day by acknowledging the extraordinary efforts of our many Volunteers. This year we held a Frank Sinatra – 50’s styled theme “Buffet Luncheon”, to say “THANK-YOU” to our very special people. In marking this day, I wish to convey my personal thanks to all of our volunteers who go about their business throughout the year making Bentley Park a better place to live. There are so many different roles that our volunteers are engaged in with each person bringing their individual talent, skill and commitment to their work. A number of studies have measured the value to the Australian economy of the time volunteers

give doing a wide variety of volunteer jobs. Of course, it is not monetary reward that volunteers are seeking but the desire to contribute to their community. We appreciate that the services provided by this special group of people are essential to a non-profit organisation such as SwanCare Group and we acknowledge with gratitude the work they do. To us, they are TRULY SPECIAL PEOPLE.

Paying Tribute to Our Long Serving Staff A continuing tradition at SwanCare Group is to also recognise exceptional lengths of service amongst our staff. Around this time each year we recognise those staff who have achieved 10, 20, and yes, even 30 years’ service to our organisation. In a challenging work environment and with the transient nature of today’s modern workforce it is truly an amazing achievement that we can celebrate and recognise service periods of such great length. We pride ourselves as being an employer of choice in the aged care sector, we want to make our employees feel proud of working for SwanCare Group and we try to ensure that they are continually acknowledged and appreciated for their hard work and commitment. When I see lengths of service such as this I get a sense of validation that we must be doing things right. This year we acknowledged the following staff members with 10 years service, Jasmine Henderson, Sam Gandhi, Sui Kor, Richard Holloway and Mavis Theyagarajah all from Residential Care. With 20 years of service we paid tribute to Valerie Hutson, Coral Williamson, Elaine Johnson, Marian Evans and Leonie Haywood, again all these staff work in our Residential Care Centres. Then, to top it all off we then acknowledged a fabulous 30 year milestone achieved by Elizabeth Ward. Liz is an extremely dedicated and passionate employee, who is a true night owl having completed her length of service as a night shift personal carer.

I spoke to Liz at the award presentation and whilst she was quietly confident that she will make 35 years service, she indicated that 40 years might be a bit of a stretch.

Centenarians at SwanCare Group Live For Free within our Independent Communities An exciting new initiative that we will be introducing to kick start the New Year is the innovative concept that any resident living independently within our communities at either Bentley or Australind, who is 100 years old, can LIVE FOR FREE. We believe that this is a first for the Retirement Living sector, and we are proud to say that SwanCare Group is leading the way with this wonderful acknowledgement to the centenarians who have achieved this milestone. We believe that this is a nice little incentive and recognition to the individual that they have achieved a wonderful milestone, and the last thing that they need to be worried about at this age and stage of their life is to have to pay for their accommodation. It is our small way of giving back. There is a bit of fine print, and conditions do apply but essentially the Live for Free concept is ready to launch in 2014.

AGM’s At the end of October we held the traditional AGM for SwanCare Group. The AGM amongst many other things is the time when we elect our Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Board, and I am pleased to announce that Julian Keys, and Robin Watts have both been re-elected unopposed for a further term of one year. Under Julian and Robin’s direction SwanCare Group has enjoyed one of the most successful years in its long history, and we look forward to continued success into 2014 and beyond. Continued Page 3

CEO’s Report (continued) The only sad news from the AGM was the announcement that Lachlan Henderson, due to his personal work commitments, tendered his resignation from the Board after serving a term of over 2.5 years. Lachlan is the CEO of St. John of God Hospital and his increasingly demanding work requirements, combined with another Board role with the WA Cricket Association has meant that it has become too difficult for him to devote the time and energy needed to give 100% to the SwanCare Group Board role. Lachlan was a very influential member during his time on the board and was a great contributor towards the organisations Strategic focus and Governance protocols. Lachlan will be missed by all and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours. With Lach’s departure, it is a timely reminder to all that our Board members are volunteers and receive no compensation for the time and effort that they devote to SwanCare Group. Their motivation is purely to provide their expertise in the hope that they can make a difference and give back to a Not for Profit community-based organisation. To all our Board members, a huge thank-you.

General Snippets from around our Community Brain Trainers A wonderful fund-raising initiative of the Activities Team, and supported by $3,000 from the Kingia / Tandara Auxiliary has generated some $4,700 towards the acquisition of two Brain Trainers. The total cost of the machines is $8,500, and the balance of funds, being $3,800 has been allocated from the proceeds of the recent SwanCare Group Charity Golf Day. The Brain Trainers are large interactive touch screens tailored for use by elderly and frail, to literally train the brain. Sensory, word, numerical, picture and memory games enable the user to progress through a series of brain work-outs to track and measure their brain power. The trainers offer tailored packages that progress in difficulty as the user’s brain becomes more finely tuned. The devices are entertaining and fun, but more importantly can help with offsetting the onset of Dementia and other neural related health issues.

Australind Rise During November we lodged the development application for the much anticipated extensions to the Community Centre. The second stage of the centre includes the pool and associated activity areas. It will be a wonderful addition to an already fantastic facility and will truly

establish Australind Rise as the premier destination for retirement and lifestyle living in this region. We are also preparing the community for the open day celebrations to be held in January. This will be a wonderful event and will showcase all that Australind Rise has to offer. CACP’s We continue to receive strong demand and support for our CACPs. The service delivery team are working within the CACP guidelines to modify the service delivery of selected clients to trial their service delivery as if it was being delivered under a Consumer Directed Care (CDC) model. Eventually all services delivered into the home will need to be delivered under a CDC scope, which essentially means that the consumer (client) will determine the level of care that they need in order to satisfy their requirements. This concept will continue to be progressively trialled over the ensuing months.

Website Launch … Video shoot SwanCare Group’s new website is close to finalisation with the launch being timed for the New Year. I would just like to say a quick thank-you to all those residents who “hammed” it up for the recent video shoots that were taken around the village and which will be used in the interactive online component of our new website. We certainly have some budding actors in our midst, who may have actually missed their true calling in life, but I guess it’s never too late …..

matched the donations 2 to 1. All monies raised went directly to the impacted families of our staff members.

Line Dancing a Big Hit Line dancing commenced in the Auditorium on the 4th November, and we were literally knocked over in the rush with over 60 attendees at the first session. This clearly demonstrated that there is much need for an activity of this nature and on behalf of the residents we send a special thanks to Pam Hind (the volunteer instructor) and to Peter & Shirley Brunt for running the classes.

CEO’s Coffee Club The Coffee Club continues to be well patronised and those resident’s that have had the opportunity to attend have certainly enjoyed the experience. These are really good opportunities to meet fellow residents, and to have a good ol’ chin wag with the CEO and other staff that are invited along. The feedback received to date has been excellent, and all those who have attended, including myself have benefited greatly from the experience. Our next Coffee Club outing won’t be until January, so keep your eyes and ears open for news about the next one.

Retirement Village Expo We participated in the annual RV expo held at Belmont Racecourse over the weekend of the 9th and 10th of November. The crowds were down on last year, however, the quality of the attendees was better (less tyre-kickers and more genuine prospects). Already we have had one confirmed buyer from the expo, and a potential resident for our Australind village.

Philippines Appeal The tragedy of the Philippines disaster is shocking and the devastation that has befallen this country is beyond reproach. Our hearts certainly go out to those impacted by this ugly side of mother nature. Sadly for us, this travesty has not escaped SwanCare Group as we have four staff members whose families have been directly impacted by the tragedy in the Philippines. In fact, we have a large contingent of other staff members, who although not directly impacted by the disaster, have connections with people who have been disadvantaged. This has been a very distressing and traumatic time for these staff and accordingly it was decided, as a mark of respect and compassion, to hold a staff fundraising event to acknowledge this disaster. The event, a breakfast, was held on the 29th November wherein staff donated monies to this cause, and SwanCare

VRAC’s Longest Serving Member Calls it a Day It is with a tinge of sadness that we say farewell to our longest serving member that we have ever had on the Village Residents Advisory Council, Mr Ken Sinclair. Ken called it a day at the last VRAC meeting having diligently served as a committee member for 8 years. Ken always had a keen eye for the village budget and was always one of the first residents to ask intelligent and very relevant questions about village expenditures. He also took command of the microphone during question time, and his skill in this area will be hard to replace. On behalf of all the residents and also Village Administration, thank you for your input and open and honest comments, you have made a very significant contribution and should feel very proud of your efforts. You will be greatly missed on the committee. And finally …. as this will be the last Tidings for 2013, I wish all residents and friends of Bentley Park and Australind Rise a wonderful, safe and relaxing Christmas and New Year. See you around the village …. Kind regards, Graham Francis

Village News Bentley Park Show Congratulations to you all for making our 2013 Show such a happy and successful one. We were pleased to welcome some very special guests, some of whom were Town of Vic Park Mayor Trevor Vaughan, Chairman of our Board of Directors Julian Keys, Board members Julie Brunner and Chris Andrich, our CEO Graham Francis and staff members, Karen Parker, Ronnie Deans and Penny Felder and of course our wonderful, supportive residents. A great big thank you to our Board member, staff members and residents who put entries in and well done to everyone who won prizes and trophies. The major trophy winners were Dennis Morris (Swan Care Group Trophy), Fran Williams (TOVP Trophy), Carol Greenaway (Committee Trophy) and Ethel Sloan (Over 90 Years Trophy). We also had some very happy Raffle Prize and Spot Prize winners. Lists of the Trophy and Raffle winners have been on notice boards since the Show and photos, taken by Jim Hopson, have been at Admin for your perusal. We have already begun planning the 2014 Show and will try to come up with some more new and exciting ideas for you. Sincere thanks to all of our helpers who worked so hard doing all sorts of tasks over the weekend, our merry band of maintenance staff for making things ‘just right’ for us, our Admin staff for all manner of help, special thanks to Ronnie for ‘everything’ and of course I would like to thank our committee who have been so supportive and helpful all year. I wish everyone a healthy and contented Christmas and New Year. Thanks again and keep smiling. Cath Devereaux, Coordinator Ph. 6250 0407

Library News In the Tidings for October I asked if anyone in the Village was interested in starting up a bookclub. Well I have had one enquiry but if there is anyone out there who is interested please let me know and I can look into it again during the New Year. Now that the summer weather is here, how about grabbing a book or two for relaxing with out of the heat. Nothing in the library that you like? Don’t worry I can always order titles in if it is available through the library system. Do any of you out there any books in good condition that you know longer want? Have you thought of donating them to your library? Any that we have can go to Don Pederick for fundraising for his Church or I can pass them on to the Victoria Park library. Another request…is there anyone out there with a collection of Mills & Boons that they would like to give to the library as I have had some residents asking for them and the stock I have now is rather stale.

CHRISTMAS NEWS Please note that the last day that the library is open before the festival season is the

Wednesday 18th December and the first day back will be 8th January. As always readers may take extra material out to cover for this period. Keep an eye open for notices which will be displayed at the library, in the foyer of the Admin building, and other places in the Village. Yours in books Penny, Bentley Park Librarian

Donation to NSW Bush Fire Appeal Thank you to the residents of SwanCare Group for contributing a total of $241.10 for the NSW Bush Fire Appeal.

Bentley Park Gardens Interest Group The Gardens Interest Group has met four times and we have had some very interesting discussions about gardening, and the development of the Bentley Park gardens in particular.

Bentley Park - Rowethorpe After thinking about Neighbourhood Watch it was decided not to continue with our meetings. Security is available to assist with any problems we may have. Graham Francis will be reminding everyone about security at his quarterly address at the Residents Coffee Meeting. In conclusion I would like to thank all the Delegates past and present for their contribution to the safety of our Village. Call Security any time on 6250 0020. Tony Ryder

For one of our meetings, we were fortunate to be able to share information and ideas about the common garden areas around the New Villas with Andy, the head gardener, and Mick Harrison representing Bentley Park management.

This is effective as of the 22/10/2013. I thank you all for your continued support and understanding whilst we are still growing. It is a privilege to be a part of this community and I look forward to serving you in the future.

In October Julie Brunner who is an urban planner, keen gardener, and a member of the Bentley Park Board came to talk with us about the overall plans of the Bentley Park site, and the need to develop the master plan for the gardens in the new developments; and the importance of getting an coherent aesthetic look to the whole village, linking the established areas and the newer developments. We all agreed on the need for more mature trees to soften and cool the village street-scape.

Warmest Regards, Ben – Spritz Cafe

In November a small group of us went to Zanthorrea Nursery to look at the extensive collection of native plants and to listen to an interesting talk on growing native plants in pots. The outing was most enjoyable and we come home with new ideas and renewed enthusiasm. The volunteer group has been formed and will be active (heat permitting) in assisting the gardeners with weeding projects around the village. The group will have a break during December and January, aiming to resume meetings on the last Sunday of each month in the New Year. Ellen Clair

Joining Our Community Our community extends a warm welcome to Mr Brian Deane, Mr Kenneth & Mrs Lorna Hayward, Mrs Joan Hosken, Mrs Agnes Anderson, Mrs Brenda Formby, Mrs Verna Roberts and Mr Ronald & Mrs Bethel Eaton.

Bentley Park Social Club The Melbourne Cup Lunch was most enjoyable, with good food, and a large number of sweeps involved so that everyone who wished to, was able to gain a place. The raffle tickets sold like the proverbial ‘hot cakes’ and with the Storyville Jazz Band providing entertainment around the main event itself, there was plenty to discuss and listen to! The video people also thanked everyone for participating so willingly in their documentary for the website. On Saturday, the 14th December, the Cambridge Community Musicians will provide Christmas music and carols – hopefully in the outdoor grassed area, with no rain on the radar! This event will be followed very closely by the New Year’s Eve celebration on Tuesday, 31st December. Can you believe another year has passed so soon? That event will be followed in short order by the AGM of the Social Club on Friday, 24th January 2014, at 9.30am in the Auditorium – and nominations for the Committee are very welcome.

And then – the Australia Day Sausage Sizzle on Sunday, 26th January 2014! The Op Shop is having really good sales of summer clothing at present, but I wish to advise in advance that it will be closed over the Christmas holidays from the Saturday before Christmas Day (21st December) reopening on Saturday, 4th January 2014. Recycling papers: There is an ongoing problem with staples in the inserts from the newspapers, so please everyone, we are now asking you to deposit them, whether glossy or otherwise, in your own recycling bin before sending the newspapers to the Paper Shed as we can no longer deal with them and they will not be taken away. By leaving them in the papers, it is very difficult for the volunteers who bind them up, as the Shed recycling bin overflows very quickly and it is then too difficult/heavy for removal. Also, would you please leave the newspapers flat before you tie them up for removal? Your assistance here would be greatly appreciated and we do welcome the papers for recycling. The Villager of the Year Awards will be announced at the International Volunteers Day Celebration, scheduled by Administration on Thursday, 5th December 2013, and thank you to all those residents who nominated the very worthy potential

Residents Advisory Council - Carolyn Wellstead The VRAC council elections were held last month – or, in fact, it was not necessary to hold an election as we only had three nominations for the three vacant positions, two of which were from sitting members. However, I would like to welcome Carol Greenaway to the council. As most residents who have been in the village for a few years would remember, Carol previously served on the council for many years, when David Harvey was Chairman, so has vast experience in this role.

8

I would also like to thank Ken Sinclair for

his contribution to the VRAC over many years and wish him well in “retirement”. I’m sure we will still see him at meetings. We were a little disappointed with the lack of nominations and hope that 2014 will see some more of our newer residents show interest in joining the VRAC. With a commitment of only two meetings per month, a great deal of knowledge about the operation of this village is gained and every council member has the opportunity to input or ask questions. Our Coffee Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month at 9.30am in the Auditorium (except December), followed by morning tea. Do come along to share in the information dispersed by our guest speakers and the social interaction among residents. If you have any queries, please

do contact one of the council members listed below and we will do our best to provide an answer. Finally, the VRAC council members would like to wish residents a safe and happy Christmas season, extending into the New Year. Carolyn Wellstead Ph 6250 0505 Cath Devereaux

Australind Rise News Residents held a Melbourne Cup Luncheon in the clubrooms on the big day which as expected turned into a truly fun day. Kerry Lucas and Ian Purse took out the winning horses in the two sweeps run. Minor placing were won by Brian Zanich, Edna Ritchie and Joan Stanton. Luncheon was cold meats and salads followed by sweets consisting of Rhubarb sponge and cream. (Salads and Rhubarb grown in the community vegetable garden). A big thank you was given to caterers Janice Harewood and Rhonda Zanich for a magnificent spread.

been in abundance for the community. After early morning pickings, the fresh produce is displayed and distributed in the clubrooms to residents, in conjunction with the Saturday morning “Coffee Club” around 10.30 am. The summer section of the garden has been planted and is well under way. It consists of sweet corn, beans, potatoes, summer peas, water melon, rock melon, pumpkin and tomatoes.

Australind Rise now seems it has a golfing legend in the making. Rhonda Zanich blitzed the field in a weekend of sheer wizardry with the clubs. Rhonda started playing golf in Margaret River about ten years ago and has recently joined the Bunbury Golf Club. Rhonda recently returned to Margaret River to play in their “Open Day”. She was successful in coming second, playing in the Canadian Foursomes Stableford competition and participated in the 36 hole individual Stableford over two days, in which she came 7th overall in a field of 240 women. Rhonda also then went on to compete in two rounds of Stroke and then won three games of match play to win the Grade Championships at the Bunbury Golf Club. Rhonda and husband Brian have lived at Australind Rise for eleven months and thoroughly enjoy the change of lifestyle that the community offers. Both are very active in our social functions and community events. The community garden has been producing a steady amount of fresh produce over recent weeks. Beans, peas, potatoes carrots and lettuce have

Undercroft Bowling Club Our inter-club game against the swan club has been held and it is obvious that we have entered a new era-no longer a little “scrap” between two groups of equal playing ability. The weather was lovely, the company pleasant and we were glad to meet the very friendly players (some now to the village) who still bowl competitively at outside clubs. However we really missed so many of our old opponents. After enjoying a very nice lunch, the inevitable results of the day – in favour of the host club—were announced by a very happily honking head swan.

On Remembrance Day, we stopped play at 11 a.m. to remember our gallant dead. A nice day gesture by a group of sterling people who really know how to “play the game”. We are looking forward to our November pre-Christmas lunch at “the pines” and the “get together” at the December 2nd. Our Holiday Break starts on DECEMBER 21 and we resume play on: MONDAY JANUARY 6 AT 9:00AM Cheerio to any members on the sick list this month – especially Bill Lee. Birthday greetings to our December friends:- Ann, Betty, Mary (Johnstone) and Peggy. In conclusion, as we approach the Seasons of Goodwill, may we extend to all who read these pages, a very Happy and Safe Holiday Time. Remember; “A day when you haven’t laughed is a day lost”.
