I trust that all of you had a great festive season, and like me have had a good rest and are full of enthusiasm and excitement about the year ahead and what this will bring to SwanCare Group. For us, 2013 was a breakthrough year as we started to capitalise on the significant changes and hard-work that we endured during 2011 and 2012. We are now blessed with a strong and sustainable foundation to our business with the outlook a very positive one. In addition, we are also extremely well-positioned to handle and adapt to the changes that we will face as our industry prepares itself for the July 2014 changes to the aged care sector. Putting it succinctly SwanCare Group is set up for a very bright, secure and successful long term future. Therefore, it is for this reason I am very positive about 2014, and beyond, and feel that these will be great years for all of those who are part of the wonderful SwanCare Group Community. Let me kick-start this month’s article with a quick overview of what we are expecting to see happen during the ensuing 12 months which will assist in driving the continued success of SwanCare Group, and in turn further enrich the lives of our residents.

What’s on the Radar for 2014 2014 is going to be a year of planning and preparing for changes that the industry will face. It is a year in which we are going to position ourselves to be able to handle

whatever may come our way, and put us in a position where we can effectively seize opportunities and adapt to circumstances and changing demands. We will prepare ourselves by undertaking some major planning and rationalisation of our key business drivers, such as:{{ Developing a detailed Facilities Management Plan. It is extremely important that to succeed in the ensuing years we must have our assets, buildings and infrastructure in ship-shape condition. This facilities plan will outline in detail the extent of work and development that we will plan to undertake to our asset base over the next few years to ensure that we present ourselves in the best light possible to not only our current residents, but also our future clientele as well. {{ Developing a Strategically-focussed Marketing Plan. In the changing climate that lays ahead it is important that SwanCare Group is very clear on the What, Who, Why and How of its business, and in particular the message that it portrays to the broader community. The Strategic aspect of our marketing will focus on the following key objectives: To improve the awareness and knowledge in the broader community of the SwanCare Group brand. This also extends to heightening the awareness of the brands of the separate (but undeniably related) business units of Bentley Park, Australind Rise, Residential Care and Community Care. To expand the messaging around SwanCare Group’s ability to be a fully-integrated service provider of independent living, community care and residential care. To set realistic goals for the sale of new independent living units at both Australind and Bentley, and, To promote SwanCare Group as an employer of choice.

{{ Developing a Workforce Management Plan. It goes without saying that our staff are our greatest asset, and we would not be the successful organisation that we are without the dedicated, committed and skilful staff that we currently have. It is therefore vitally important that we prepare a management plan to ensure that we can continue to retain, attract and effectively train our staff to ensure that we can maintain the high standards and level of service for the long term. It is also important that this workforce plan establishes a blue-print for our future staffing resources, its organisational structure and establishes a management process that allows for appropriate succession planning. {{ Revising our Long Term Master-Plan for Bentley Park. Bentley Park, our 15 hectare site, is constantly undergoing change as it adapts to the demands and altering nature of the clientele to which it serves. It is therefore important that the old master-plan, prepared in 2008, is reviewed and updated to accommodate the future directions and ambitions that will drive SwanCare Group into the future. The master-plan is the over-riding plan that guides the longer term development of the site and is used as a foundation for all major capital investment and infrastructure development and growth. The above four plans will feed off our current Strategic Plan and will complement the three key strategic pillars that we are focussed on; Sustainability, Service Delivery and People.

Stage 5 - Update Let’s now take a look at one of the key infrastructure developments that will commence during 2014, subject of course to attaining the desired level of pre-sales. I am referring to Stage 5 of the Bentley Park redevelopment. As mentioned in previous editions of Tidings Continued Page 3 this development

Christian Fellowship of Bentley Park We would love to see you at our Sunday Service of praise and song. We are from all denominations and would love to welcome you into the Christian Fellowship. We meet at the JP Stratton Centre every Sunday 9.30am. The fourth Sunday of each month is our Prayer & Praise service, led by members of our group. The Kingia Care Facility has the Swan Room furnished and set up as a Chapel. Monthly Church Services are held by the Anglican (4th Tues 1.30pm), Catholic (1st Fri 10.30am) and Uniting Church (3rd Wed, 10.30am), and residents of the village are welcome to attend.

CEO’s Report (continued) is perhaps the most crucial that we have undertaken during our long history. This project will set the guidelines and direction for the major development along the main thoroughfare of Adie Court and will ultimately change the entire shape, look and feel of our Bentley Park site.

General Snippets from around our Community Brain Trainers The two Brain Trainers are now operational in our care centres and are bringing much enjoyment and benefit to our residents who are residing in care. The Brain Trainers are unique, interactive, touch-screen machines that provide intuitive games that stimulate the brain. They are designed as a therapy tool to help offset the emergence of dementia and other neural diseases, but probably more importantly for the residents, they are simply just great fun to use and a good source of entertainment. We are extremely grateful to the hard-working activities team who raised funds for this equipment and to the generous support of the Kingia / Tandara Auxiliary who also contributed some $3,000.00 towards the purchase of these machines.

Australia Day Celebrations Stage 5 will provide modern apartmentstyle housing to those residents entering the community, and more-over it will provide a new and exciting leisure hub and community asset for the entire resident population of Bentley Park. This development will link the entire village together and will be the centre-piece of our community. Already we are experiencing significant interest from potential residents wishing to acquire one of only 44 first stage apartments. These apartments will sell quickly, so if you know of anyone that might be interested in obtaining more information about these units, I suggest that you get them to touch base with Harry Pearson on 08 6250-0016 to register themselves on the information list. It will be a first come, first served basis so make sure you don’t miss out.

Australind Rise Community Centre – Stage 2 Not only we will be undertaking building works at Bentley, but our south west community at Australind Rise will also be undergoing redevelopment with the much anticipated second stage of their community centre. This stage will incorporate extended leisure areas, alfresco entertaining and a heated indoor pool. The community centre upon completion will further enhance this community’s fast growing reputation as the most desirous retirement location in the Australind / Bunbury region. We expect to commence construction in the first half of this year.

Our Australia Day Celebration was once again held in heat-wave conditions, however, forward planning from the Social Club to hold the event in the auditorium meant that it was pleasant conditions for all that attended. Congratulations to the Social Club for organising the event and it was good to see a solid turnout for what has become a traditional and well-patronised event on the Bentley Park calendar.

Feathers Forms Just a quick reminder to continue to keep on the lookout for spotting staff members going above and beyond the normal call of duty in helping out our residents. When you do happen to be on the receiving end of impeccable service, or you catch a staff member going that extra mile to help, can you please take the time to fill out a feathers form in acknowledgment of this great service. The Feathers reward scheme is very quickly becoming a great success story in itself and staff are very appreciative of receiving the nominations and in turn receiving their Feathers. Nomination forms are available from any of the general reception areas. And finally to round off this month’s article I would like to conclude with a series of Congratulatory events. Firstly, I would like to offer our best wishes to our IT Manager Paul Grzelec who on the 10th January married his beloved Kathryn. We wish them the greatest of happiness and a lifetime of treasured memories together. On a similar vein we also send our sincerest and heartfelt congratulations

to Margaret Robinson who recently announced her engagement to longtime partner Ian. Margaret is very well known to many of our Bentley Park residents, and now she is putting her indelible stamp onto the Australind Rise community. As with Paul, we also wish the greatest of happiness for Margaret and Ian’s future lives together, as yet we don’t have a date set for Margaret’s nuptials, but we will continue to press her for this all important information. The next round of congratulations relate to two very important and long serving staff members who have decided that their time with SwanCare Group has reached its conclusion and both these ladies are setting about on new chapters of their lives as they move into welldeserved retirement. The two ladies are Coral Williamson, an EN from Kingia and Tandara with over 20 years’ service, and Jenny Horton our Accounts Administration Officer with approximately 9 years’ service. Both Coral and Jenny have provided tremendous dedication to SwanCare during their respective periods of employment and both will be greatly missed. Both ladies, with their respective partners are embarking on sea changing adventures as part of their retirement, Coral is off Caravanning around Australia, and Jenny is relocating to her property in Beverley. Definite changes which have been finalised are: THE SHOW WILL BE HELD FOR 1 DAY ONLY – SATURDAY 25TH OCTOBER. OPENING TIME 10AM – 5PM. Art section will have just 6 categories – Oil, Watercolours, Acrylic, Pencil, Pastels and Mixed Medium – any subject in each of these – and there will be a maximum total number of art entries each person may enter, because of our space limitations (This number hasn’t been decided on yet).

SwanCare Group Chief Executive Officer Graham Francis said the organisation was on the lookout for a good home for the machine after recently upgrading their staff coffee machine.

“One of our staff members is affiliated with the Roleystone Volunteer Fire Brigade, so she suggested they may be able to put the machine to good use,” he explained.

“We are delighted that the ‘old machine’ has Recycled Article section has been dropped due to lack of interest. Christmas Decorations section has also been dropped but suitable decorations could be entered in the Art & Crafts section. Although our overall number of entries were up last year, the ‘Art & Crafts’ section, with the exception of handmade cards, had considerably less entries than previous years. If anyone has ideas for ‘New’ or ‘Different’ crafts we could include which may encourage more entries for this section, we would love to hear from you. I will keep you informed as we work our way through the Schedule so that you can start planning your entries. It is unlikely that other sections will be changed drastically and so you can use last year as a guide for the time being.

This year we held a 1950’s styled “Buffet Luncheon” to say “THANK YOU” to our very special people.

Bentley Park Social Club In this February 2014 issue of the Tidings, I wish to sincerely thank my Committee Members: Nancy, Betty, Mary, Kath, Laurie and Beryl, who have worked tirelessly throughout 2013 to ensure that there is a full programme of entertainment for the benefit of residents. The Committee Members have been assisted by many willing volunteers, not only with the ‘setting-up’ and individual jobs during the events, but also with the ‘cleaning up’ at the end of a function which is greatly appreciated. We also thank you, the residents, who have supported events by your attendance and appreciation, during 2013. The Op Shop continues to flourish, with

students and local residents also enjoying a browse and a buy. (If you are interested in assisting in the staffing of the Op Shop, please contact Beryl, the Manager, so she is able to consult a Reserve List if someone is away.) A load of Cans has gone to the Recyclers recently and the Recycling of Newspapers continues, with a large load taken away before Christmas. Do please remember not to include the glossy inserts from the newspapers in your bundles for the Paper Shed but put them in your own recycling bin, along with other inserts with staples in them. The Sunday Concerts will begin in February and, as usual, there is a range of other events in the schedule for 2014. The Calendar of Events will be displayed on noticeboards

around the Village but please be aware that sometimes the day or time may be altered at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. By February when these Tidings are distributed there will be a new Social Club Committee in place, and it is hoped they enjoy an interesting and rewarding time in office. Stratton Luncheon/Concert Arrangements for the 12th year of Stratton Fish & Chip Luncheons and Concerts 2014 have been completed. The first will be on Friday Feb 7th when the entertainer will be vocalist Gary Lynn, an established favourite. The Luncheons will be held on the first Friday of each month through until December. Tickets cost $10 – bookings can be made by ringing Shirley on 9355 4767. These events run from 11.30am to 2.30pm and the ticket price includes the Fish & Chip meal served at the table, wine and soft drinks, tea and coffee and afternoon tea and cakes. The cattle of the Kimberley are fat and shiny sleek. You can see they water well and eat good grasses all the week. They are bright eyed, and bushy tailed to keep the flies at bay! And living in the tropics they sleep at noon each day.

The sheep of the Kimberley are like their cattle mates, Long white woolly jackets clean, supported by black legs. Their heads are high, their ears are pricked, they take in everything. A queen’s choice leg of lamb would likely be their offering.

The cattle of the Ashburton now they’re a different breed. Living on sagebush and spinifex they’re very hardy indeed. Their hides are rough, they’re skin and bone, they’re never make the grade. The stations bring them in to sell

The sheep of Ashburton what a sorry sight they are, Dirty, daggy, flyblown, sick, and they run away from cars. The spinifex and saltbush brush is all they have to eat. Few trees, and not much shade have they, to beat dry, dusty heat.

Bentley Park Diner’s Club Our first outing for 2014 is on Tuesday 11th & 18th February, this month we are going to the Bentley Hotel Albany Highway Bentley. It is a 2 course meal for $24.00. Theatre Go-ers Club The group is free to join – just buy a ticket. On Feb 7th we go to Guildford to see “Brilliant Lies”. There may be last minute ticket returns available. Club News Swan Village Bowling Club The committee wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year. Our social evening was a great success, and our thanks must once again go to the ladies who organised the event. As usual we held our Christmas Raffle during the evening and the winners were as follows. The skid marks on the green have been reported to Admin, and also we have requested some of the residents of MCC to report to Security if they should see any culprits. Joyce Barker is now on our sick list, what a great lady she is, always willing to help in anyway, from all, the club we wish her well. Also our Vice President Tom will be indisposed, for, we hope a short while. Please make a note in your diaries for the Half Yearly meeting, the date is Thursday March 6th at 9am. The Snooker Players Association The Snooker Players Association is situated on the second (Social) floor of the Administration Building. Playing sessions are held Tuesday to Thursday from 1–3pm. We’ll be starting again with the basic steps and easy dances so don’t worry if you’ve forgotten what you learnt or you’re a newcomer giving it a try. I go through the basic steps at each session for any new people so you can join at any time.
