Across My Desk CEO’s Report Can you believe that we are into March already? I love March, it signals to me that the really hot weather has now passed us by (well hopefully anyway), it is the beginning of autumn, my favourite season, and above all else it is the beginning of the football season. Can the Dockers do one better this year and take off the big-one? And can the Eagles reverse the form slump that saw them sitting amongst the cellar dwellers last year. My prediction is that both our WA teams will be in the finals mix this year, and don’t be too surprised if we get the magical Eagles and Dockers Grand Final – won’t that upset the applecart!!! But that’s enough of a digression let’s kick start this month’s article with some wonderful comments about the SwanCare Group community.

This month we will be commencing our new regular feature in which we highlight and profile teams from the hard-working and dedicated administrative staff members. This initiative was borne out of a request from our residents meetings, whereby it was suggested that it would be good, particularly for our newer residents, to find out a little bit more about our administrative support team. I hope that you enjoy this new feature of our Tidings, and thank you to the staff that have supported this initiative.

SwanCare Group in the Media Some of our residents may have noticed that SwanCare is getting more exposure in the local press and other magazines of late. This is not just by accident, it is by design, and is part of the overall focus on our increased messaging and heightening of our brand awareness to the broader community.

Bentley Park Outdoor Movie I would just like to take a moment to congratulate the organising team behind the fabulous Bentley Park Outdoor Movie Night that is to be held under the stars on 4th March. We are estimating 150 residents to attend and hope you thoroughly enjoy the beautiful movie “The King’s Speech”. This is the second outdoor movie experience and I am pretty confident that this will become a regular feature on the SwanCare Community calendar. I would like to sincerely thank the hard-working staff who are giving up their time to assist on the evening, and special thanks to Karen Parker, the brainchild behind the event. SwanCare Group is proud of its Community spirit and it is events such as this that I believe epitomises what we are all about.

Part of our marketing plan strategy is to increase the messaging that SwanCare Group is an organisation that has a community focus and truly cares for its staff, residents and indeed all those persons that have a stake in our community. The on-going promotion, assisted by our PR advisors Shine Communications is delivering this message loud and clear. Since we commenced this increased promotion we have had several news items and stories published about SwanCare Group and its caring, and community focussed initiatives.

Bentley Park Social Club St. Patrick’s Day Lunch - 16th March

The following stories have all received print media exposure: SwanCare Group fundraising for the direct families of our staff that were victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated the Philippines. Donation of administration’s old coffee machine to the Roleystone Firies. BrainTrainers introduced into our care facilities (a first for WA). Volunteers function – 1950’s theme. A wonderful photo of Ken Sinclair and yours truly making the papers. The Live for Free initiative, for centenarians that are still living as independent retires within the village. (Another first, we think for Australia)

Feathers Rewards Program The Feathers Reward and Recognition scheme underwent its first six-month review via a staff and management survey. Feedback from the results showed that the initial take up has been very good, that staff see the scheme as a positive addition to their employee benefits, is a source of motivation, and is well regarded. The main comment flowing through is that staff value the recognition, particularly recognition from residents, and this is seen as the primary benefit of the system. Thus to all those residents that have taken the time to complete a Feathers recognition form in response to receiving service from a staff member that went above and beyond, a huge thanks. To those residents that haven’t yet lodged a form, I would encourage you to do so. The receipt of the recognition by our staff from you is extremely well regarded, and makes a huge impact on them.

Christian Fellowship of Bentley Park We would love to see you at our Sunday Service of praise and song. We are from all denominations and would love to welcome you into the Christian Fellowship. The report, from our perspective is very useful and provides good validation for operators, and is a source of useful input for future planning and development opportunities. Essentially, the report confirms what we already know, and provides consistent support to the integrated business model of care service delivery. You might be interested to know that based on the National survey it can be revealed that the following myths have been busted ….. 1. “Village catchment is limited to 10km” FALSE …. Reality: 44% of residents moved more than 20km from the family home, including 31% that moved more than 50km. 2. “Prospective residents are focused on lifestyle villages” FALSE ….

3. “The DMF and contract are major problems” FALSE ….. Reality: 97% found the financial arrangement suitable to their situation at time of entry to the village.

BrainTrainers a WA First

The “Australind Bike Club” has two essential day outings on the weeks calender. Monday mornings at 8.30am the group ranging between three to eight riders set off from The Rize Clubhouse heading north alongside the Estuary, through the Australind town centre, along the picturesque Cathedral Avenue to Buffalo Road at the head of the Estuary, a round trip of 15km in distance. The riders are led by Terry Nugent who has the reputation of maintaining a unrelenting pace.

Forget Nintendo Wii’s – residents at Bentley’s SwanCare Group are paving the way for seniors-focussed gaming with a WA-first technology especially designed to improve seniors’ memory fitness.

Changes to the Art section were published in last month’s Tidings. Further to that report, we have decided that the TOTAL OVERALL NUMBER OF ART ENTRIES FOR EACH PERSON IS FIVE. The ‘PENCIL’ category will be included in with the “MIXED MEDIA’, making a total of 5 categories for Art.

Thursday at 8.30am is a trip into the Bunbury City Centre, a round distance of over 20k. It’s not all hard work as each trip is punctuated by breaks at their favourite local coffee shops. The “Indoor Bowling Club” is gaining new participating members on Thursday evenings in the Clubhouse. The double teams are very popular with family groups. Fay and Michael French always showing up in the finals, who are the ones to beat. Also proving good for a laugh are the Ladies versus the Men competition. Yes the rumours are true, the Ladies teams have not lost a game yet!

We are still keen to hear from anyone who has ideas for ‘New’ or ‘Different’ crafts we could include in the Arts & Crafts section which may encourage more entries. Three ideas we have received are Scrap Booking (1 or 2 pages), Leatherwork and Gift basket (complete with suitable items for a special occasion). We’re not expecting any baskets to the standard of the beautiful ones Rita makes for us all, but who knows?

The Juniper Outreach & Wellness Program have planned several interesting Free Wellness Seminars for March.

The $4300 consoles were purchased thanks to an enthusiastic fundraising campaign within SwanCare. SwanCare Activities Coordinator and Diversional Therapist Annemarie Kluvers said the equipment features a range of interactive short and long-term memory games including puzzles, general knowledge quizzes, Sudoku and photo reminiscence, along with personalised daily brain training options for hundreds of SwanCare residents.

Rowethorpe Wellness Program

We hope at least some of you have already begun work on your entries.

SwanCare is home to the first BrainTrainerPlus equipment in WA, an interactive technology designed to playfully boost memory fitness which is proving a vital tool combatting dementia. After an enormously successful six-week trial of the equipment in July last year, two BrainTrainer game consoles recently arrived at SwanCare in Bentley, and are already proving that game consoles aren’t exclusively the domain of young people.

“Another good feature of the BrainTrainer is that residents can upload their life story, and family members can assist in this process by adding photos and valuable memories. But the main thing is that our residents genuinely enjoy using the equipment – it’s engaging, personalised and works through positive reinforcement, so they are motivated to pick it up and play off their own bat.”

Bentley Park Social Club AGM The AGM was held in late January and the following Committee Members were elected for 2014. President: Shirley Barnes Vice President: Laurie Hudson Secretary: Nancy Brazier Treasurer: Laurie Hudson Committee Members: Betty Briggs, Jim Leavy, Mary Manning, Allan Meney, Mary Wieman and Beryl Luckman as an Honorary Member. My thanks to all who nominated and their commitment is very welcome. Our thanks are also due to those who nominated as volunteers for the year. The Treasurer advised that donations had been made during 2013 to the Library for big print books, and to the Care Centres for relaxation and entertainment purposes. Crockery had been bought for usage by residents at the Stratton Centre and the Auditorium, also a plate warmer for the kitchen, plus an audio amplifier and 2 new gazebos for general use. The Op Shop continued to make a substantial profit for the benefit of the Villagers, with the Recycling assisting on a lesser scale. Our thanks to those volunteers who keep these projects going. Social Events The social events for 2014 are now in full swing, and following the very successful and enjoyable Australia Day Sausage Sizzle and the first 2014 Sunday Concert, the next event is a St Pat’s Day Lunch on Sunday 16th March. The Heel and Toe Band will again provide entertainment and tickets will be limited, so if you wish to attend please ensure you pick them up on the nominated day and time. In April, there will be another Quiz Night, with a new Quizmaster (very strict!) and again, loads of prizes. For further information ‘down the track’re events, please consult the Social Club Notice-board and the flyers. The Op Shop is still providing funds for the benefit of the Village residents with Beryl and her volunteers in attendance, and if you have some time to spare, Beryl is always on the lookout for those who are able to provide some staffing assistance, especially at short notice. The Paper Recycling has slowed as the stapled inserts are no longer admissible (but please put them in your own recycling bin). However, it is still providing some welcome funds, as is the Can Recycling. SwanCare Administration - Meet the Sales Team Natalie - General Manager Retirement Living I am the General Manager of Retirement Living I look after Bentley Park and Australind Rise. I have worked at SwanCare for almost 13 years. I love that every day is different. I also really enjoy getting to spend time with such diverse and interesting people. Before SwanCare I worked for the WA State Government in the Ministerial Offices. Outside of work I like to walk my dogs, ride my bike and spend time with my niece and nephew. My hobbies include travel and reading.

Harry - Retirement Living Consultant I handle sales enquiries and promote retirement living. I have worked at Bentley Park for three years. It’s the best job I’ve ever had! There’s great staff to work with, and residents with a wicked sense of humour. I enjoy providing an essential service and believe in what I am selling. Before SwanCare I worked as a Salary Packaging Consultant. Previous careers include Real Estate Sales and Public Service in the Main Roads Department. Outside of work I enjoy travel on holidays, which usually includes a road trip. I also get involved in secret men’s-business, help administer a Bali/WA joint venture bolthole, enjoy church (as a social outlet), play with grandchildren and follow the stockmarket. My hobbies include music – mainly listening but I play some lounge-room guitar, riding Harley Davidson motorcycles, driving Jaguars, life drawing, landscape painting and telling tall stories. Oh yes.. and I’ve been married to Shelley for 45 years.

Denise - Sales Administration Officer I work in the Sales Department as the Sales Administration Officer and also look after the rental units. I have

worked at SwanCare Group for five years. What I enjoy most about my work is the people I work with and helping the residents. Before SwanCare: My previous position was in Administration at the Western Australian Turf Club, organising horse race meetings throughout W.A. Outside of work I love spending time with my family and friends and we are currently building our new home. Some of my hobbies are reading, netball and of course playing Candy Crush (ask your Grandchildren)!

Heather - Senior Resident Support Officer I am the Senior Resident Support Officer and Community Care Coordinator. I have worked at SwanCare Group for 20 months. What I enjoy most is the residents and being able to assist them to be as independent as possible. The staff I work with are fantastic. Before SwanCare: Admin & Payroll / Rostering, Hall & Prior Nursing Homes. Special Needs Education Assistant, Dept of Education. Personal Carer and PA to CEO and Director of Nursing, Tongala & Community Aged Care Complex. Outside of work I enjoy catching up with friends and my son. My hobbies include gardening on my balcony, reading books, sleeping and my ragdoll cat.

Nola - Resident Support Officer I am a Resident Support Officer and I have worked at SwanCare Group for 5 months. This is the most rewarding job I’ve had in my working life. The residents are delightful and I love it when they share their life experiences with me. There are so many writers, poets, artists, retired professionals and academics living here. I actually feel very privileged to work here. Before SwanCare: I worked as a Warehouse Manager/Supervisor at Crikey Camper Hire, a Real Estate Property Manager and an Administration Assistant. Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my four children, their partners and my six grandchildren. My hobbies are gardening, watching movies and reading.

Residents Advisory Council - Carolyn Wellstead Judging by the lack of major complaints raised at the meetings, life in our village appears to be bubbling along to the general satisfaction of most of our residents. Please be assured, though, that any matters raised at the coffee morning (however minor) are passed on at the following week’s management/resident council meeting and those items stay on the agenda until resolved. Therefore, don’t be too shy to stand up and ask questions.

Bentley Park Diner’s Club Our outing is on Tuesday 11th & 18th March 2014. This month we will be going to a new venue, it’s at the Boab High Wycombe. The Senior’s menu is for $18 serving Classic Chicken Parmigiana with Fries & Salad, Beer Battered Fish & Chips (or grilled), Pork Belly(gf) Fries & Salad, & Garlic Creamy Prawns with Rice. The Elusive Barbeques!!!

Theatre Go-ers Club All residents are welcome to come along. There is no joining fee. We go by village bus to amateur theatres in the Perth area and drop you off afterwards near your home. A typical inclusive ticket price is around $25.

Everyone who has been on a theatre visit in the last 18 months is automatically on our mailing list. To go on the mailing list please buy a ticket or contact the Coordinator. Residents need to be active and able to manage steps/stairs within the theatre.

As 170 or more residents wended their way to the Auditorium, with walking sticks, walkers and thankfully, still many on ‘shanks pony’, we were greeted by the wonderful aroma of frying onions wafting across Plantation Drive and it was a delight to see Master Chefs in their fancy aprons ‘sizzling the sausages’, but little did any of us realize, through a minor lack of communication and a misunderstanding, we very nearly didn’t have our Australia Day Sizzle, for the Village barbeques couldn’t be found!!!

Last minute ticket returns are often available from the Coordinator on the morning of the show. A copy of the flyer for the next visit is on the ground floor notice board at Administration. On Friday 28th March we visit the Harbour Theatre Fremantle to see ‘Café Brosse’ a comedy. This theatre is located on the first floor of the building and there is no lift. Tickets @ $26 each go on sale on Monday 3rd March at 8.15 am inside the Stratton Centre near the village shop. Stratton Luncheon/Concert Arrangements for the 12th year of Stratton Fish & Chip luncheons and Concerts 2014 have been completed. The next will be on Friday 7th March 2014. The entertainer will be singer / guitarist Fenton Wilde a most accomplished performer. The luncheons will be held on the first Friday of each month through until December. Tickets cost $10 – bookings can be made by ringing Shirley on 93554767. These events run from 11.30am to 2.30pm and the ticket price includes the Fish & Chip meal served at the table, wine and soft drinks, tea and coffee and afternoon tea and cakes. The 1 hour concerts are performed by quality entertainers and run from 1pm to 2pm. Please book early as seats fill quickly. Peter & Shirley Brunt

Rehab & Healthcare Equipment

Many would have seen Laurie (as we often do!) driving around the village in the special bus, but no one would have suggested that he was not conveying any of our invalid residents, but actually loading the bus with barbeques kindly lent at the last minute by some of neighbours! There were many remarks on how lovely the hall looked as we entered, with the bright Aussie Tablecloths, there were many compliments as to how well organized everything was regarding the manner in which we were served with our Sausage Sizzle and lovely salads. Oh yes! As far as we were concerned it all ran like clockwork, but little did any of us know of the last minute dramas that taken place! On hearing about this later, someone said ‘just as well you had a plan B’…..the quick response from “someone” who was involved was, “Plan B? This is one time we didn’t even think of it!!” Well, it just goes to show, with a fantastic example of Teamwork and possibly still being able to draw on our Life’s experience of ‘Initiative, The Social Committee and the Band of valuable Volunteers, so very much deserve a resounding applause for, despite all the last minute unexpected difficulties, they made our Australia Day a “Bonza Success”!! Club News Swan Village Bowling Club Our half yearly general meeting is on March the March 6th start time is 9.am everyone is welcome to attend, if you have any suggestions or complaints please put them in writing and hand them to our secretary Barry. We held a Drawn Mixed Pairs competition in January, it was won by the team of Nancy Brazier & Mike Post congratulations to them, runners up were the team of Joy Ride & Dennis Morris. As we can only accommodate 16 players for this event some members expressed concern about this.

LINE DANCING Line Dancing is back and off to a good start. Lovely to see some who tried it last year are back and also some new people giving it a try.

Don’t worry if you have never played before – that’s OK. We are happy to show you. All new players get first 3 books free.

You’re welcome to join in at any time, I go through the basic steps for any new people and we “walk” through the dances a few times first. I keep to the easy dances and slightly slower music.

As the green needs vacuuming and general maintenance at least once a week a roster has been placed on the notice board for the gentlemen, if for any reason you need to change, your date please organise for someone to take your place. It was felt that it was too larger job for one man, so it is now a three man task, with enough volunteers your turn will only come round about once every 5 or 6 weeks.

Good prizes to be won on Bingo and our raffle basket is always a great favourite tickets - 3 for $2!!!! Lucky numbers a $1 each!! Lots of fun for all!!

We’re in the Auditorium at 9:30am on Monday mornings and we finish off with morning tea.

I am waiting for someone to contact me regarding, relaying the carpet along the front of the seats at each end, also to re-glue the side panels.

Handicraft Where have all the flowers (Ladies/Crafty People) gone?? Come to our rescue. The Handicraft Group has been in existence in the Village for many years. A member of the present group has been in it for over 12 years and has told us that when she joined there would have been over 20-25 ladies present, but sadly this is not the case at present, we average 4-5 members weekly, who willingly and happily work and chatter away. Over the past 2 years our Group has forwarded $3000 to the Care Facilities – this money being raised from the sale of various items, stalls and raffles – a great effort by so few members. The Handicraft Group meet each Monday except Public Holidays at 1:00pm in the Handicraft Room at the Admin building. There is no joining fee, just 50cents to cover afternoon tea costs. The Storeroom has ample supplies of fabric, wool etc., even have a sewing machine and overlocker for use. You don’t have to be “crafty”, your presence and support and any new ideas would be most welcome or just come along for afternoon tea and a chat. Your interaction with others will work wonders for yourself and hopefully keep the Handicraft Group in existence. Let us recognise our unique gifts and share them with others.
