GREAT MOMENTS 1 Melbourne Cup Waminda

Kingia & Tandara

Melbourne Cup at Waminda was filled with excitement! Starting with a high tea, residents were able to enjoy various delicacies as the staff hosted a trivia game while waiting for the race to start. Once the race was over and the winners of the sweeps were announced, residents settled in to watch ‘Ride Like a Girl’.

Melbourne Cup lunch at Kingia Level 2 had everyone smiling! Residents wore their most fabulous headpieces as two staff jockeys pranced around on their ‘ponies’. After lunch, the winners received their sweeps prizes before enjoying afternoon movie time watching ‘National Velvet’.

Ningana At Ningana, our residents had a lovely garden BBQ where they enjoyed posing for photos wearing their fancy hats and fascinators. Residents also participated in our sweeps, very much looking forward to watching the race, before we announced the winners for ‘Best Dressed’ and ‘Best Hat’.

Tandara and Kingia Level 1 had horse racing table games in the morning, followed by an afternoon fashion parade in the Tandara courtyard with our therapy dog, Lacey. Everyone took turns showing off their “cup walk” on the green carpet! We then wrapped up celebrations with a small award ceremony for our many talented, fashionable residents.

GREAT MOMENTS 2 Christmas Celebration All four care centres enjoyed beautiful Christmas parties, from high teas, dinners and even surprise visits from Father Christmas! Our residents had a fantastic time and were very thankful for such a magical experience. It was beautiful to see not only residents, but staff as well, enjoying the festive celebrations. It was the perfect way to honour the holiday season at SwanCare. Residents also enjoyed two concerts including a performance by ‘The Herald Skifflers’ as well as the village ‘Allsorts Choir’, who performed a Christmas concert with a twist! Residents from Ningana, Kingia and Tandara enjoyed a lovely afternoon featuring music from the 60’s and 70’s with some festive Christmas carols to sing along too as well. Residents also went on a bus trip to see the local Christmas lights. The evening started with residents enjoying snacks and refreshments by the river as they watched the beautiful sunset, before heading to Joseph Banks Retirement Village in Canning Vale to see their lights display. Their residents were very happy to have us visit. We then headed to Consulate Court in Thornlie where our residents were very impressed by their stunning Christmas decorations. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

KINGIA FAMILY November and December were eventful months at Kingia, beginning with Melbourne Cup, continuing with Remembrance Day featuring special host Reverend James, and culminating in the Christmas celebrations. In conjunction with Tandara, we wish to extend our sincere appreciation to all the visitors who have given us wonderful memories over the course of these previous few months. Certain noteworthy occurrences include the wind instrument recital by Cloverdale Primary School, the Christmas-themed visit arranged by Jan H. with our pet therapy puppies Ash and Cinder, the Hudson couple’s Carols by Candlelight, cheer visit from Bunnings Cannington and the continuous enjoyment of the 'Ride 4 a Reason' sessions by Boronia. Christmas celebrations were also in full swing at Kingia, where two separate high tea parties were held. Kingia Level 2 enjoyed a performance by 'The Lost Chords' and received a special guest appearance by Santa Frank of Bentley Park. Kingia Level 1 had a fantastic time at their celebration, which featured a performance by Derek of ‘B Sharp' and a visit from Ramy, our volunteer Santa. Additionally, both SwanCare Kingia and Tandara initiated their summer hydration programmes which include delectable juices, fruit kebabs, icy poles and monthly ice cream trolley visits for all to enjoy.

NINGANA FAMILY We had the most wonderful and eventful Christmas season over at SwanCare Ningana! It was a pleasure to have the ‘Take Note’ choir perform their festive repertoire for our Ningana residents which which everyone enjoyed singing along to. It was an incredibly moving performance, and the best way to start off our Christmas celebrations. We would like to thank Leonie Curran, choir member and a Ningana residents’ daughter, for facilitating this beautiful concert. We hope to have them visit again soon! To continue with the Christmas celebrations, we were truly fortunate to receive a visit from the staff at Bunnings Cannington. They helped spread some wonderful Christmas cheer, even handing out presents! We would like to thank Bunnings Cannington for such a thoughtful and lovely morning. Residents also had the opportunity to make beautiful Christmas hats during our art and craft sessions where they used their creativity and imagination to decorate headpieces that were later worn at our Ningana Christmas party. This activity had residents talking about their Christmas traditions and reminiscing on their joyful holiday memories. Overall, it was a magical and beautiful season which our residents very much enjoyed celebrating.

TANDARA FAMILY SwanCare Tandara and Kingia both hosted a Christmas raffle. Our sincere appreciation to all those who participated and contributed to the tremendous success of our fundraising raffle. The victors were drawn by Mrs. Ah Foon L. for Kingia. Sue, daughter of Valma P., was bestowed with the first prize. Sue, daughter of Severina C., was awarded second place, and our Kingia receptionist, Sheridan R., was awarded third place. The awardees for Tandara were drawn by Mr. Eric C. Bev. F, our Tandara receptionist, was awarded first prize, followed by resident Allan G. in second and Rose R., one of our Tandara AINs, took home third prize. To all, congratulations! The Christmas high tea party hosted by Tandara was held in the courtyard. Guests were entertained by a performance from 'Wheelin 'n Dealin' and were delighted to be greeted by Santa Peter, our own resident of Tandara. Residents of both Kingia and Tandara were presented with Christmas presents. One of the items was a personalised frame bearing the resident's name and its significance, which was made possible by Tandara resident Eric C. Additionally, Stanley College students contributed significantly to our Christmas gift-giving by assisting us with wrapping presents and setting up Christmas decorations.

WAMINDA FAMILY Christmas is a busy time for everyone, and the residents here at Waminda are no exception! The staff spent the first few days decorating the floors and main areas to help everyone get into the festive spirit. Leading up to Christmas the residents were keeping occupied with various activities such as Christmas-themed quizzes, several music concerts and lots of Christmas movies. The residents and staff also decorated some gingerbread houses in a friendly competiton between the other care centres. Then, keeping with the food theme, the Social Engagement team organised pavlovas for all residents to enjoy. Both residents and staff have been enjoying the different Christmas activities, especially the visit from Santa Clause and his team of elves.

MESSAGE OF THE MONTH Dietetics Corner Beat the Summer Heat with Smart Hydration and Nutrition by Student Dietitian, Priyal. Summer is now in full swing! To ensure you remain healthy and hydrated during these warmer months, follow our list of essential tips detailed below: 1. Snack on hydrating fruits like watermelon, packed with vitamins and antioxidants, or treat yourself to a nutrient-rich salad containing colourful vegetables. 3. Texture-modified diet options SwanCare’s Hospitality Team also provide a range of delicious summer food options for those with texture-modified diets, such as refrigerated fruit purees. 4.
