Line Dancing
Many thanks to Bev and all the other helpers who “kept the show on the road” while was away. From all accounts, all went very well, and everyone appreciated being able to keep dancing during my absence. It’s good to be back and dancing with all my friends.
Everyone in the village is welcome to come along and give it a try. Apart from being so good for your balance and co-ordination, it’s also a lot of fun and we’re a very friendly group. Doesn’t matter if you haven’t danced before, give instructions for each dance.

Vision Impaired Group
Are you losing your vision and finding it harder to do those things that you’ve taken for granted all your life? Do you feel isolated and are you worried about what life holds for you in the future?
Significant vision loss is traumatic for anyone, particularly the older you are when it happens. It is very easy to sink into depression and think that life is over, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There are people around you who are having the same issues. You are not alone! Why not come along to our support group and get to know others in the same boat? You might be surprised who you come across. We meet at 1:00pm on the fourth Friday of every month for coffee, lots of chat and plenty of laughter.
If you know someone who might benefit from this group, please pass the information onto them as they may not be able to read it for themselves.

Chess Group
Not long after moving into the Bentley Park village three years ago, retirement living resident Tom Swallow noticed one popular hobby was missing from the list of clubs. This prompted him to start the Chess Group, a game he says brings him as much joy as it does brain power.
Tom’s love for chess developed as a young boy who learned to play from his father. As a father to three boys himself, Tom passed his knowledge to them and even started his own chess group in his local neighbourhood. “My boys and did that for several years and it attracted a good crowd, but as my sons grew up, they lost some interest, so it’s been fantastic getting back into it again at SwanCare,” said Tom.
Chess is an abstract strategy game that involves no hidden information with the objective of capturing the opponent’s king. While the King is the most important piece of the game, the Queen is the most powerful.
“In chess, you’re putting your mind up against someone else’s. It gives you the best mental work out because it is so strategic and challenging; It’s exercise for the brain,” Tom said. While there’s a handful of members who make for some hefty competition, there are a range of levels among the group to cater for players both old and new to the game.“Rebecca is one of our great players and she is always up for a challenge, but if you’re a beginner and a little rusty like was at first, we are more than happy to show you the ropes,” said Tom, “Everyone is always welcome.”
Tom says it’s the fellowship, good company, and friendly atmosphere he enjoys most about the Chess Group, “We all get on well and the enthusiasm among the players make it so fun to be part of. We are always looking for more to join us so feel free to stop by this month and see what it’s all about.”
