Swan Village Bowling Club
Day bowls on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays will continue throughout August. Recent rain has resulted in several days having to be abandoned. Bowls is never cancelled for weather so if enough members turn up and are willing to play, a game will go on.
Our joint bowling game with Rowethorpe in July was enjoyed by all and the weather was kind. This month a lunch outing has been arranged for the 31st of August to Tassels Place in Innaloo. Numbers will be limited to 40 so keep your eyes on the club notice board for booking details. Details of the club’s AGM on the 7th of September will also be on the board this month.
Illness continues to affect many members and we wish them all a speedy recovery, and even if they cannot bowl, they are all welcome to happy hours. COVID-19 infections excepted of course.
The club now has a happy hour after both Wednesday and Saturday bowls. New members are always welcome. There is no need to prebook just turn up on a bowling day with flat shoes and we will show you the ropes. Please note will be on holiday after the 19th of August, but our Vice President, Jim Leavy, or any committee members can help if required.

Garden Interest Group
The Garden Interest Group started by a group of Bentley Park neighbours in September 2013, as the perfect club for residents with a green thumb to socialise and build a sense of fellowship, all while sharing a love of gardening. Now nearly ten years later, the group continues to flourish throughout SwanCare.
For retirement living resident and Garden Interest Group Secretary, Noelene Barnes, going outside and getting her hands dirty has been part of her life for as long as she can remember, “My father was the gardener in the family when I was growing up, so we used to help as kids.”
It wasn’t until years later though that her interest became a passion, after she started driving her mother-in-law to the Midland Friendly Garden Club, “That’s where my love of gardening really began. They always had a big table of cuttings and members were keen to let you know the best ways to get all types of plants to grow. Some of the plants I grew from there 48 years ago are still flowering for me!”
Their bi-monthly village meetings can also be extended to the wider community through bringing in new voices and further sharing their own, “Sometimes we get a speaker from another specialist club or gardening organisation to visit, and other times our committee members are invited to meet with the SwanCare Admin team to provide input on suitable planting of the civic and communal garden areas,” she explains. Noelene says one of her favourite aspects about being part of the Garden Interest Group is the support and skills she gains from fellow members, “There is always someone who can help you with something, be it what to grow where, the best fertilisers to use or new and safe methods to control pests.”

You can join Noelene and the other Garden Interest Group members at their next meeting where they’ll be discussing planting for summer colour and the Bentley Park Show!

SwanCare Centres Auxiliary
We are now halfway through 2023 and it’s going so fast! Unfortunately, we had to cancel our July meeting, however we’re looking forward to this month’s meeting on the 22nd of August at 1:00pm. Our speaker will be two ladies giving us a laughing yoga demonstration, so something very different. We will also have our No Bake Cake sale this meeting, which is always a great fundraiser for the Auxiliary.
Our zoo trip was a great day out for all, and we were blessed with great weather. Our next outing will be the Mandurah Dolphin Cruise, and for those who still need to register or book our close off day will be at this month’s meeting. There will be no meeting in October as we are planning a trip to Aqua at Hillary’s. Cost is $50.00 for tour and fish & chip lunch.
Last but not least we have two vacancies next year on the committee. I have enjoyed my two years and knew nothing when first started but the committee are wonderful to work with and will be a great support.

Line Dancing
Why not give line dancing a try? All residents are welcome to come along. You can watch to see if you like it and try some of the easier dances. It’s so good for you (watch any health/wellness program and they always say how dancing is so good for you, particularly as you get older.) Music always has a ‘feel-good’ effect on anyone, and dancing also improves balance and coordination as well as your memory and fitness. We’re a very friendly group and we have morning tea after the session. Hope to see you there.
