The aged and community care sector has never been as exciting or challenging. The introduction of the Government reform agendas and the push towards consumer-direction and market competition are driving fundamental changes to business models and are challenging aged care providers to adapt, innovate and embrace the new paradigm for service delivery within aged care. In 2014/15 SwanCare recorded its best financial result in the organisation’s 55 year history. More importantly, we continue the proud tradition of providing a happy place for older people in retirement living and residential care. Highlights for last financial year included the completion of a new master plan for Bentley Park; start of construction of the Akora apartments in Bentley; completion of the second stage of the community facility at the Australind retirement village; successful re-accreditation of our three care centres; improvements to

technology, hospitality and consumer directed care; and one of our hard working volunteers Laurie Hudson was named the ACSWA Volunteer of the Year. Bentley Park is the largest fully integrated continuing care community in WA and the new master plan sets out a bold and exciting vision for future development of the village. When completed in late 2016 the new 5 storey Akora building on Jarrah Road will offer 44 contemporary apartments with a ground floor cafĂŠ and outdoor piazza. Residents at our South West retirement village at Australind now enjoy an expanded community centre with indoor pool, outdoor alfresco and entertainment area. Congratulations to our outstanding Residential Care management team and the dedicated group of nurses, carers, hospitality and other staff for achieving 100% compliance in the three yearly accreditation of our care centres Kingia, Tandara and Waminda.

At SwanCare we are always striving to enhance our systems and services. In 2015, the board approved a comprehensive technology plan to upgrade IT services for staff and residents. We successfully implemented the new consumer directed care approach for community care packages and look forward to expanding these services over the next two years. In hospitality services we introduced new menus and a new service delivery process.

Our South West based retirement village in Australind also benefitted from significant infrastructure enhancement with the completion of the second stage of the community facility with the construction of the indoor heated pool, outdoor alfresco and entertainment area.
We were delighted to have one of our star volunteers, Laurie Hudson, named WA volunteer of the year by the Aged and Community Service industry body. This was wonderful recognition and validation for the outstanding contribution that Laurie has made to his fellow residents over many years. The SwanCare board and executive team is very focused on achieving both ‘margin and mission’. In 2014/15 we achieved a record annual financial surplus in excess of $6 million, 3% revenue growth and 6% asset growth. In the next two years we will be spending $2M refurbishing the Tandara care facility and planning to spend a lot more improving community facilities and outdoor areas throughout Bentley Park. All these wonderful results would not be possible without the hard work, teamwork, passion and vision shown by our 370 plus staff, executive and board of directors. We thank you all for being part of a very special organisation and community. Lastly, we would like to pay tribute to our nearly 1,000 lovely residents who show that retirement and later life is all about ‘adding life to years’ not just ‘years to life’. We are proud to present the 2015 SwanCare Group annual report.

Major Achievements & Highlights for 2015 SwanCare is one of Western Australia’s premier Not for Profit providers of fully integrated care and accommodation services for our elderly. With a history of affordable care services and accommodation support now spanning over 50 years, SwanCare is firmly established as a leading choice for residents seeking an organisation that can offer a true continuum of care and accommodation. SwanCare operates independent living, in-home care and nursing home care services from its main site in Bentley and also offers high quality independent living from its new retirement lifestyle village in Australind. The future is extremely positive with the results of 2015 placing SwanCare in an enviable position that will assure its popularity and demand for services will continue to grow and thrive. Building New Infrastructure • A new Dementia Specific Wing created in the Kingia Care Facility. • The 44 modern and spacious Akora apartment construction commenced. • The Australind Rise Community Centre and Indoor heated pool completed. • The stunning new Pine Mews independent living precinct developed. • Solar PV panels installed atop Kingia.

SwanCare brand in the spotlight and major media during FY 2015
During the year the SwanCare brand featured in over 30 media publications, each unique story highlighting the special role that SwanCare plays in enriching the lives of its residents and staff. We cannot reproduce each wonderful story here, but following is a rapid fire snapshot of the major milestone media announcements.
SwanCare Wins National Better Practice Award n August 2014 SwanCare was announced as a winner of a National Better Practice Award today, recognising the organisation’s outstanding performance in Staff Development. The award recognises the high calibre of SwanCare staff, and focusses on the not-for-profit organisation’s innovative new rewards and recognition scheme, known as Feathers. Feathers encourages staff to “put a feather in their cap” through a flexible and fun loyalty program that focusses on staff recognition and reward, to help combat workplace attraction and retention challenges.

n June 2015 n November 2014 Coffee with the CEO is proving a hit at SwanCare, as part of a unique coffee club outing linking residents with the organisation’s Chief Executive Officer each month.

As part of what’s become known as the CEO’s Coffee Club, Graham personally drives the SwanCare bus and a group of residents to coffee each month for the one-on-one catch-up.
Laurie’s outstanding efforts as a volunteer in the local community were rewarded when it was announced he won the Volunteer Category of the awards at a gala dinner at the Crown Entertainment Complex on Friday night celebrating excellence in care across aged and community care services in WA.

SwanCare’s ‘$100 for 100 Years’ campaign launched n June 2015 Leading not-for-profit aged care provider SwanCare will this month launch its ‘$100 for 100 Years’ campaign to help fundraise for major enhancements to the ground floor wing of its Kingia residential care facility. The ‘$100 for 100 Years’ campaign is being unveiled
to coincide with Mavis Cleaver’s 100th birthday year. Mrs Cleaver co-founded SwanCare (then known as Swan Cottage Homes) with her husband Dr Richard Cleaver, who was the then-Federal Member for Swan, in 1960. Mrs Cleaver now resides in Kingia Care Facility with 81 other residents.

n April 2015 A new aged-care wing designed for people living with dementia will be launched a SwanCare’s Kingia Care Facility in Bentley this month. SwanCare chief executive Graham Francis said the 17 beds would meet the increasing aged-care needs in

the area. The wing was funded by a $67,000 Lotterywest grant as well as SwanCare investing more than $100,000 into the facility. The wing features an interactive wall as well as a specially-built kitchen which will enable residents to bake and prepare meals.
2015 is proving to be the Year of Centenarians at SwanCare in Bentley, with an incredible ten residents celebrating milestone birthdays this year. SwanCare could be WA’s most-densely populated zone of centenarians after the birthday boom in its aged care facilities Waminda, Tandara and Kingia, with eight ladies having marked their 100th birthday – while two other residents have celebrated their 101st and 105th birthdays.
