SwanCare News

CEO'S Column On the last day of September, SwanCare staff and residents dressed up as superheroes to raise awareness for mental health (see photos, below). The idea came about when a staff member noted that many superheroes have battled mental health conditions, despite their strong appearances and huge responsibilities. Superman has a personality disorder, Batman has depression, Iron Man has PTSD and Wonder Woman suffers from anxiety. Indeed, some of the strongest people in our community can be struggling, and these struggles can often lay hidden by a strong and resilient exterior. Even superheroes fight battles within. The event was also about bringing some fun to the forefront. 2020 has been a difficult one for many, so we really enjoyed bringing a smile to the faces of those around us – a little bit of fun goes a long way.

The superhero theme could also work very well for another awareness raising event, National Carers Week (October 11 to 17). National Carers Week is a time to recognise the 2.65 million Australians who provide care and support to a family member or friend with everyday living. Carers play a pivotal role in the lives of many, and we often see that many home-based carers experience burn out and fatigue; caring for a loved one can be a challenging job. It’s important to recognise that carers also need to be cared for and their health and wellbeing is equally important. If you are a carer and would like to discuss what help might be available, please chat to either SwanCare Resident Support (6250 0020) or SwanCare At Home (6250 0300) to discuss what support networks and services are available to you. To all carers, thank you for everything you do. You are true superheroes. Graham Francis, SwanCare CEO

Superhero Day On Friday, September 25, SwanCare residents and staff dressed up to raise awareness of mental health and the fact that even Superheroes silently battle inner villains. There were balloons and plenty of superherorelated decorations, superhero fruit stations, lots of fun & laughter and the opportunity to wear your undies on the outside and get away with it! Thank you to everyone who got involved on the day.

Cameras have come a long way in the past couple of decades from film strip photos to digital, now to the era of filters and editing.

What a beautiful gift! The children at Orana OSHC Centre have handmade some bookmarks for our residents as part of their community connection project.

This great shot was taken by Chris Mann from a recent outing that the Photography Club went on at Lesmurdie Falls. No Photoshopping in sight here! Thanks for the great shot, Chris.

Special thank you to Orana OSHC Centre staff member, Rhorie (left), and SwanCare's Ashleigh Fitzgerald for bringing together this initiative for some of our lucky residents.

SwanCare News A Nod to Our Humble Letter Box A writer, Sue Hobson, has dedicated her time to research the history of letters boxes in WA, recently writing a book called 'Cast Iron Pillar Boxes of Western Australia: An Early History of the J & E Ledger Foundry'.

location in Kalgoorlie. The photograph was taken on 21st May 1973 (reference Sharr collection of photographs 4326B/37/7). Who knew this post box had such a history! If you like letterboxes, be sure to get your hands on Sue’s great book.

Sue loved hearing about the ornamental letter box we have on site at SwanCare’s Leisure Precinct though it is no longer in service, she went on to find some information about it.

The cast iron pillar box was made in 1900 by J & E Ledger of Perth. It was originally located in Kalgoorlie, at the corner of Lionel and Hannan Streets (per National Archives of Australia, letter dated 15th February 1967: Letter Boxes and Pillars of Historical Interest and 1978 Catalogue of Vintage Posting Boxes). The photo (right) is from the Battye Library showing the letter box in situ in its original

A Different Kind of Father’s Day

Jeffrey from the Lifestyle Team was having one-on-one time with residents at SwanCare Tandara and came up with a plan to do a creative Father’s Day greeting poster. "One of the residents asked if they could write it in another language, it just evolved from there to this beautiful multicultural piece." "The residents were really happy with themselves that they could still manage writing the greeting, one even went on to pen a story about their father that migrated from the UK to Australia,” Jeffry said. “It was fantastic!". Great job Jeffrey and all the residents at Tandara!

Village News Australia Post Time Frames

Battery Recycling Opportunities

Australia Post are making some temporary changes to metropolitan letter deliveries to support Australians using Australia Post during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Did you know that batteries and fluorescent light globes should not go in the rubbish bin as they contain materials which will pollute the Earth? Spectacles and hearing aids can be tested and re-used for people who cannot afford new ones!

Parcel volumes are increasing as customers – and the Australian businesses they buy from - adapt to online buying and home delivery in huge numbers. Meanwhile, letter numbers have fallen, in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Temporary changes have been made to Australia Post’s delivery performance standards in recognition of the impact of COVID-19 on our operations. These changes will apply until 30 June 2021, subject to review, and include: • An extension to the maximum required delivery time for regular letters sent within the same state to up to five business days after the day of posting. • Suspending the requirement to provide a Priority Letters service. From 1 June 2020, Priority letters will be processed and delivered as Regular letters. A temporary alternative Priority timetable is available to some bulk mail types. • An adjustment to the minimum delivery frequency of letters in metropolitan areas from every business day to every second business day. For example, letters will be delivered to a particular address on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday one week, then Tuesday and Thursday the following week. There is no change to delivery frequency in rural or remote areas. Express Post items, parcels and PO Box mail will continue to be delivered every business day, regardless of location.

You can recycle batteries (all except car batteries), spectacles, mobile phones, watches, hearing aids, printer ink cartridges and fluorescent light globes (not tubes) at these locations across the SwanCare Bentley Park site at: • East of Adie Court in Richard Cleaver Lodge near the letter boxes • Plantation Apartments foyer and the Administration building foyer • West of Adie Court in rubbish rooms next to the laundries • Drummond Apartments foyer and Mavis Cleaver Court near the notice board • Akora Apartments • SwanCare Waminda near the reception desk Your help is greatly appreciated to protect the Earth for future generations! Resident Story

From the Kitchen to the World The adventures of Brian Dobson Did you know that we have a Swiss-trained, globally experienced chef living among us? Former SwanCare village, now Ningana resident, Brian Dobson has travelled all over the world, honing his culinary skills and racking up some impressive life experiences which need to be shared. Born in England and raised in Scotland, Brian worked as a chef all over the UK. He partook in an exchange programme where British students would train to be chefs in European countries, and Europeans would in exchange train in Britain. They were placed in hotels all over the country. Brian worked as a hotel manager, spending time in Switzerland, France and Germany.

Multi-cultural adventure Always one for an adventure, Brian travelled further afield with his work, taking part in a tour from London to Deli in 1958, driving all the way. He stayed in India and Pakistan for about a year and a half, working for a group of hotels. Brian also spent a good chunk of time in Baghdad, where he was transferred from Delhi. At the time, there was a terrible incident where a Swedish girl was kidnapped while walking along the streets, which really shook the expats living in the area. Brian had an American couple staying with him for a few weeks, and for safety he would run their children to school and back, and escorted them to lunch. Before long,

14 SwanCare

Brian Dobson enjoying life at SwanCare Ningana

word got out about what Brian was doing for the family and friends asked if he could help them too. “After a week, I was doing two rounds”, said Brian. “I had a combi, so I could carry 30 kids. Then I went on to start a bus company and got paid for it! I had a 22-seater Mercedes Benz delivered from Germany, before long I ended up with nine buses! I used to do tours too, I’d run people down from Mecca to the high street.” The venture turned out to be a profitable one. But one day while driving his bus, life took an unexpected turn for the worse. Little did he know that while he was away, a war had started and finished (Iraq/Israel war in the 60s). The Iraqi’s were throwing the British out of the country. “I was stopped at the border and had a machine gun put on the windscreen of my car, and I was told to get out. “Everybody out!” they said. I had Germans and a couple of French. They stuck us in an army truck and sent us to Baghdad airport, showed us to a plane, a Greek airline. That was it, I arrived in Athens in just pants and no passport. No money. Nothing. So, I went back to England”. An unfortunate end of an era. And this wasn’t the first time Brian should be affected by war. He became a casualty while serving two years in national service for the British during the

Korean war. “I have no idea how I got shot,” explains Brian. “I was out on night watch. The bullet was probably at the end of its trajectory, but it went in through the belly button, around the muscle and around by the kidneys. I didn’t realise I’d been shot till I saw my boots were filling with blood”. Brian was taken immediately to a Kyoto hospital in Japan where he spent six weeks in recovery. He still has the scar now.

Australian Life In 1969, Brian emigrated to Australia. One of his reasons for moving is not what you might expect…! “One of the main reasons was that I crashed five cars in a year and couldn’t get a driving license!” said Brian. He arrived in Darwin in a three-piece suit, complete with collar and tie. “I didn’t realise how hot it was there!” said Brian with a laugh. “I loved it, I got a job as Head Chef at a hotel for a couple of years, then moved to Brisbane, got married and travelled and worked around Australia. I worked in mining camps, cooking for 120 people. It was a good workout. At the same time, it was exhilarating as you were in charge of everything. Everything had to be costed, they were eating for 33c a meal!” Well no matter the reason he came to Australia, we’re glad that Brian made the move, as he’s since been a much loved SwanCare resident for over 18 years. He initially lived in the retirement village before moving into Ningana a few months ago due to health reasons. Unfortunately, he has arthritis in his hands which have over time ‘seized up’. But he says living at Ningana with the care and support has helped a lot.

Brian with his partner Patricia

Finding love at SwanCare Brian and his partner Patricia are one of SwanCare’s many love stories, with Patricia also being a resident, still located in the village. They were both part of the village computer club and one day, bumped into each other at the local shops and got talking. They have been together now for 16 years. Both being foodies, going for nice meals is an activity they enjoy together. When we spoke to them, they were just on their way back from having a seafood lunch at The Point restaurant, which Brian highly recommends. Due to his arthritis, Brian can not cook up his speciality poach trout with lemon sauce anymore, but his son delivers a few dishes every week. And with Patricia next to him, he was quick to compliment her quiche! Happy wife happy life, hey Brian!

It is also a good time to feed your rhubarb with liquid or slow release fertiliser for a bumper crop.

Resident Story

Planting Smiles “Gardening adds years to your life and life to your years” - unknown SwanCare is renowned for having a strong community, with numerous clubs and groups bringing like-minded residents together. But it’s not just the activities and facilities that draw people closer, there are some understated pockets of social activity around the retirement village too.

Jill (far left) with other Plantation Apartment residents

In front of SwanCare Bentley Park’s Plantation Apartments resides a beautiful garden, created and maintained by green-fingered resident Jillian Williams. She often walked past the vacant patch and thought it was a shame that the space was left untouched, so Jill decided to do something about it! It was just prior to Christmas 2019 when she started work. The floral haven she created would go on to attract the attention of residents, with many stopping to enjoy the garden, and have a quick chinwag! Jill initially had no grand plans for the garden, although she wanted it to be a sanctuary for birds. Over time, more and more plants and flowers were added to the mix. But it all started with the central positioning of a large bird bath. The garden is filled with hardy plants and flowers for easy maintenance. But it was no simple feat in the early days. In order to establish the garden, Jill made a daily trip to the garden carrying two buckets of water, four times, to ensure the area stayed hydrated. “It was hard work, but worth it,” Jill said. Jill has enjoyed seeing the garden flourish, but what really brings her pleasure is witnessing the happy faces of locals who also take gratification in the garden. “Jill has made all the difference in the world… the garden makes it feel more like a home,” fellow resident Elizabeth McCartney said.

18 SwanCare

Another resident with a visual impairment reported that she takes delight in hearing the birds that have set up home in the garden. When Jill is on holiday, the gardening gloves are handed to neighbour Sonia Bonney who takes care of the floral retreat, “We think of it as our private garden,” Sonia said. “We’re so proud of what Jill has done!” We quizzed Jill for some of her gardening secrets. “Like everything, if you really love it, it will flourish as you will look after it,” said Jill. And what is the future for the garden? Jill laughed, “I don’t think I could fit any more in there!”

Valuable Volunteers

A Helping Hand Bev Howard has a typical servant heart, volunteering for many years outside the village. When Bev moved into SwanCare in 2010, it was only natural for her to put up her hand to help out when someone needed it. From giving a helping hand, Bev ended up in six committees and even serves as the treasurer for the Bentley Park Show. This one even shocked her! “I started preparing, serving, packing away at the Show, and then it went official with the president of the Bentley Park Show asking me to be a part of the committee,” Bev said. “I was shocked because even though I do craft, I don’t really know a lot about craft. Last year they didn’t have anyone for the treasurer position, so now I’m in that role!”

Weight Watchers Club. “Volunteering makes you feel that you are useful and that you still have plenty to give. You don’t have to commit if you don’t want to, but if you have energy and want to use it, go for it!” Bev said. As well as all the working and volunteering, Bev is blessed with three children, nine grandchildren, and three great grandchildren – all of whom she adores. We are so happy to have you here at SwanCare, Bev! Thank you for all that you do for our community – we appreciate you and the other volunteers who make this community so great. If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer, please get into contact with Karen Parker on 6250 0010 or email karen.parker@swancare.com.au

While speaking with Bev it was clear that she loves to occupy herself by being a part of the committees, all with one common theme: fun! Bev is a very joyful person and loves that she has found a community of people to have a laugh with. “People are so friendly at SwanCare – I absolutely love it here,” Bev said. Bev had a fortunate upbringing with many lovely memories made with her siblings getting up to mischief along the Swan River. Although she has lived in several places around Perth, she cannot speak more highly of living in the SwanCare community. “I love being with my SwanCare family here. To me it’s just such a wonderful life to know that people are here looking after you. You have to do it yourself too, but you know your back is covered if you run in to too many difficulties. Not to mention the confidence I have found while living here,” Bev said. Bev worked the majority of her life at Coles (for near on 33 years!), and is close to celebrating her 25th year volunteering at

Resident Story

Keeping Fit in our Mature Years by Carol Neist, SwanCare Bentley Park resident Keeping our bodies and minds fit in late life can be a bit daunting. For some of us, we feel we no longer have the strength, energy and enthusiasm for ‘working out’ that many of us had in our younger days. It’s especially hard for seniors who were enthusiastic about fitness back in the time when they had no injuries, and lots of interests that required fitness - tennis, dancing, swimming, team sports… the list could go on. Mature adults of both sexes often back off from the very idea of exercise, and that is quite understandable. We remember when we found it easy to play sport or go for a run! It’s usually at about this stage of the game we remember a friend telling us about a walking group, or a yoga class, or a table-tennis club that Jane Longlegs or Joe Bloggs is raving about. While we may feel reluctant, that little voice in the back of our minds pushes its way forward and says Why not give it a go? So, you text Jane or Joe to get the lowdown on their new interest. What kind of exercise should you take up? Well, a survey a few years back found that dancing was the best exercise for mature adults. something else. Any kind of exercise is better than none! We have a couple of exercise groups here at SwanCare. Leona Douglas leads an established group every morning, and you get a bonus coffee and chat as a reward. Another fitness class, run by physiotherapists, is held on Thursdays at 10 AM. There is a walking group, and now we have our lovely swimming pool! We’re spoilt for choice, there is something going on to please everyone. If that’s not a long enough list, I’m planning a Middle-Eastern Dance group (ladies only, sorry guys!).

Penny's Book Review ‘A Man Named Ove’ by Fredrik Backman

Pen Pals with Gowrie Early Learning Centre

A Man Named Ove is Frederik’s first novel and it is a delight! It is funny, moving and an uplifting tale of love and a community that will leave you with a happy mind. At first sight Ove is definitely the grumpiest man around. He has firm principles and a short fuse - he even persists in making his daily inspections of the local streets, making sure all is right and rules are followed. As you can expect behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. When people move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, an unexpected friendship is discovered. If you are looking for a feel good story, this is it. Fredrik Backman is Swedish author, born in 1981. Other books by Fredrik Backman you may like me to order include: • My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry (2015) • Britt Marie was Here (2016) • Anxious People (2020) Happy reading! The children are quite young so you need to put your creativity to the test sending them a selection of images, drawings, short stories or letters for the teacher to read. If this is something you are interested in, please contact Ashleigh Fitzgerald at the Leisure Precinct or on (08) 6250 0320.

Passions & Pastimes

Henry Zentner: Scroll Saw Hobbyist SwanCare resident Henry Zentner moved to SwanCare only three months ago, but word has already escaped that he has a very impressive talent. Henry is a passionate scroll saw hobbyist, so dedicated to his art that he will happily give up his time demonstrating the skill to those that are interested.

So, What is Scroll Sawing?

Henry's scroll saw

For those that know Henry, you’ll know he’s not a wood carver. “People often mistake it for wood carving” explains Henry, “and most don’t know anything about it at all, or have even heard of it”. He says that to compare it to wood carving is like “chalk and cheese”. “The Scroll Saw is motorised and takes very little physical effort - but at the same time it requires a lot of practice, patience and experience.” The main purpose of the scroll saw is to cut intricate profiles, patterns and joints on wood, plastic and metal. Henry has quite the collection that he has made himself, including clocks, boxes and plaques which you can see on his website: www.henry4woodart.com

Earings made from wood are very popular

Where it All Began… Before retiring, Henry built houses and furniture as a hobby (around his full-time profession), he had a large workshop with lots of equipment. But when he retired he downsized into a small villa which did not accommodate the luxury of a workshop. He initially assumed he'd have to give up his woodwork, before he discovered scroll sawing. Henry realised that to use a scroll saw he didn’t need a large space, and although it meant learning a new way of working with wood, it was a new and exciting prospect with endless scope for creating art. “It’s never ending what you can do” said Henry, “You can even cut 3D chess figures”. Ten years later, Henry has 8,500 patterns that he works with! Henry’s favourite item to make is a clock. He takes joy in gifting items for family and friends, with one of his favourite pieces being a replica cuckoo clock that he made for his granddaughters eighth birthday. He has also made a plaque for another grand-daughter to celebrate her graduating as an Occupational Therapist. Henry is a regular at the Claremont Showgrounds Wood Show, where you’ll find him demonstrating the art of scroll sawing. He showcases his work and his products are very popular - he always makes a few sales.

In particular, his wooden ear rings “…sell like hot cakes”!

The Art of Scroll Sawing In 2010, Henry joined the one and only scroll saw Club in Western Australia, where they met once a week. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have time to go anymore but that doesn’t stop him from making magic in the back of his SwanCare home! We asked Henry what attributes make for a good scroll saw person, “It’s about quality,” Henry said. “and that starts with the scroll saw. The one I use is worth $1000, but you can get cheap ones for $250 – but you get what you pay for!” Then it’s about your method. “You must be meticulous,” Henry said. “You can’t rush it. I won’t show anything to anybody until it’s perfect. There was a member at the wood work club who just wanted to rush everything to get it finished and give to people, but he kept messing up”.

“Preparation and finish are the most important parts to it. You could spend days on something only to ruin it. It needs to have a nice satin finish for a quality look. Some people just spray gloss on it when they’ve finished it, but that’s not to my taste!” Henry says that you must love what you are doing in order to do a good job. If you’d like to learn more about the art of scroll sawing, or watch Henry in action, he is happy to demonstrate his work, show you his many products and teach those that are interested in having a go. If he’s not with his lovely wife, you will find him with a scroll saw in hand!

Take a Closer Look See some of Henry's works currently on display in the Reading Room at the Leisure Precinct.

Legendary Recipes Thank you to SwanCare’s People & Culture Manager, Fiona Millar, for the recipe and the yarn behind it.

Orange Cream Tart By Fiona Millar “We have a family recipe for a dessert that has been passed down from my Mum, Dorothy, to the family it is called Orange Cream Tart (we call it a pie). It’s a favourite at all the family events and now that my Mum has arthritis, she has passed the baton on. “My daughter-in-law Kath and grandson Chase spent the day with Mum on Christmas Eve 2017 to learn the recipe and to learn how, what and timing from (Great) Grandma.”

Whipped cream can be served on the top of the pie or on the side (we usually serve on the side). Keeps well in the fridge for five days and freezes ok (not that there is usually any left). *A dessert spoon is a between a teaspoon and a tablespoon and is about 10ml.
