Laindon Place Newsletter Issue 1 : March 2018

Laindon Place is Here! Our plans for the Laindon Shopping Centre have taken a step forward as we were joined by local councillors at the site, to unveil the new “Laindon Place” branding for our retail-led regeneration. The branding has been developed following the detailed consultation work we carried out with residents before securing planning consent for our award winning new scheme. Swan’s Chief Executive, John Synnuck said: “We’ve been working in Basildon for almost 25 years, so we recognise how the regeneration of Laindon Shopping Centre is key to Laindon’s success as a place to live, shop and work. That’s why we stepped in and bought the Centre, so we could make this happen, after so many previous owners failed. Laindon Place will transform a dilapidated and unattractive inward-looking centre into a new high street including new shops, a health centre and even a new Swan Office, to which our Billericay based staff will relocate. There will be stylish new homes too, all set in high-quality public space and when complete, Laindon Place will be at the heart of a revitalised Laindon, benefitting existing and new residents”

Footbridge removal to allow earlier delivery As part of the Laindon regeneration, Swan’s plans include a brand new NHS Medical Centre. In order to enable the delivery of the Medical Centre as soon as possible, we have submitted a stopping-up order to Essex County Council to enable us to remove the footbridge. If the order is granted, we will plan to remove the footbridge by early autumn 2018. Residents will still be able to access the shopping centre safely via the two road crossings and the stairs up to the centre will be retained. www.swan.org.uk

A Greener Laindon is Coming! At Swan, we are committed to bringing about the longawaited regeneration of Laindon Shopping Centre. The existing centre is not an attractive place for residents to visit and our plans will not only result in more trees on the site than exist now, but there will be significant improvements to the public realm at Laindon. In fact, Laindon will be much greener than it is now: • A new garden will be installed on the podium and high-quality landscaping around the War Memorial, giving it prominence. • We will replace the metal barriers in the dual carriageway with trees and planting. • Many of the trees that are being replaced have been found by expert arboriculturalists to be low quality and all will be replaced by high quality trees of appropriate specimens and maturity. That’s why we are confident that Laindon Place, when completed, will not only be more green but will also have public spaces that local people actually want to use!

Works to begin on site in coming weeks!
