Jonathon Swanson University of Florida graduate Architecture Portfolio FALL 2015 1

PREFACE This portfolio is a collection of my work during my Graduate studies at the University of Florida. The work primarily focuses on forms of digital architecture that was explored through learning new programs, techniques, and strategies to help with increasing productivity with workflow. From this class, I learned a new program that I never before thought I would be able to use : Rhino. I also learned new techniques in Photoshop and Illustrator to more effectively use the programs and enhance my productivity and workflow.

CONCEPT Through an analysis, this site has a sense of place due to the remnants of past buildings bringing about this idea of “what used to be here?”. I decided to compliment that concept with a material. Copper is a material that will change over time; it will patina and have a green protective coating that will make itself apparent as time passes. This material invokes the same question, “what used to be here?” or rather, “what did this used to look like?” This idea will relate to the city as well because as the city evolves and changes, so will the materiality of the structure. The form derived from this concept is one of deconstruction. Focusing on time, the idea was that this layering of copper panels would create this corner feature. These layered panels are arranged so that they are most dense where the remnant materials in the site are, and as it moves further away the structure begins to deconstruct. There are also voids that are placed within the structure that are to connect light to the existing materials within the site. This is to allow the light, at certain times of the day and year, to pass through the structure and hit the materials inside the site. This will cause someone who is inhabiting this space to notice and further investigate what this all means, or the connections that are there. CONCEPTUAL TIME-LAPSE

CONSTRUCT The phenominological aspect of light was the approach used to highlight the aspects of this construct and linking it to the city through form. The aperatures within the structure were placed strategically to allow the light to pass through and hit the different remenant materials on the site to create a connection between the site and the structure. The light would then create highlights upon the ground that could allow for the opportunity for someone to draw a connection between the construct and the site, or draw attention to the site and allow for a dialogue to occur. The construct also was designed with the aspect of night time being an important factor because of the urban setting of this project. This construct is lit to make it glow and draw attention as well as create a sense of mystery that draws someone to explore what this construct is. And, because of its location, this could bring about a gathering space that could be used at night because of the surrounding areas night life. Time plays an important roll with this structure, thinking about how the materiality of the structure relates to the city and to the site. The idea is that the copper would relate to the city through the idea that the material changes and evolves as time passes, just as the city surrounding it would. The material also relates to the site because of the idea that the site reveals something to you once you begin to truly undertake it, and this material also allows for that dialoge.

BOSWORTH ON HOTH Project : The assignment was to, purley using photoshop, to create an image that required creating a landscape and setting to place the photo of our professor and a cartoonish house. This was to learn new and useful tools in photoshop to make photorealistic images and how to take many different things and blend them together.

VECTOR MAPPING Project : This assignment was to create a mapping analysis through a vector program. The vector program was Illustrator, and the map is based on downtown Orlando, Florida. I mapped out significant buildings and their connetions around the main arteries in the city.

RHINO 101 Project : This assignment was to use the program Rhino in order to model a complex geometry with major curves within its design in order to learn about the uses of the program. On this page is the image of all the layers composed in Rhino rendered in Rhino. The next page shows the Rhino model exported into Illustrator to create diagrams out of the geometry to show the layers.

RHINO DIAGRAMS Project : This assignment was to use Rhino to create a model for diagrams for an analysis of the site for this project. The model was then to be taken into Illustrator and made into diagrams that were purposeful and understandable to be possible design drivers for the project. To the right is a refined site plan with the city context, made in Illustrator. The next page has Rhino to Illustrator site analysis diagrams.

PARAMETRIC PAVILION Project : This assignment was to use Grasshopper to create a model for a parametric pavilion. The model was then taken into Illustrator and made into diagrams explaining the pavilion design. To the right is are images of the grasshopper formulas used to create this pavilion, and the beginning pieces to the design process. The next page shows the panel system generated from this geometry, the structural system, and the complete system as a finished product.

CONCEPTUAL RENDERING Project : This assignment was to create conceptual renderings using a modeling program, a rendering program, and then finishing the renders up with post-processing in photoshop. To the right are the final renders, and the next page shows the base layers used to create those renders. The model was created in Revit, then brought into Kerkythia for clay rendering, and then photoshop to add materiality and character to the render and view.
