Midi Dresses: Transition effortlessly with midi dresses that can be paired with ankle boots or sneakers for a stylish look. Midi dresses offer the perfect balance between comfort and elegance, making them ideal for both casual and formal occasions. Choose dresses with autumnal prints like florals or checks to add a seasonal touch to your wardrobe.
A
s the seasons shift, transitional trends in fashion become essential. These trends help bridge the gap between the warmer and cooler months, ensuring your style remains on point throughout the year. Look out for versatile pieces that can be layered, such as lightweight jackets, scarves, and adaptable footwear. In this chalk-it up, we’re looking into the key must-haves to keep in mind: Layering: Embrace the art of layering with lightweight cardigans, chic blazers, and versatile scarves that can be easily added or removed. Layering is not just practical for varying temperatures but also adds depth and dimension to your outfits. Consider mixing textures, such as pairing a silk blouse with a knit cardigan, to create a visually interesting look. Neutral Tones: Opt for a palette of earthy neutrals like beige, camel, and olive that seamlessly blend with both summer and fall wardrobes. These colors are versatile and can be easily mixed and matched, allowing for a variety of outfit combinations. Additionally, neutral tones provide a sophisticated and timeless look that never goes out of style.
Denim: Incorporate denim jackets and jeans into your outfits for a timeless and adaptable style. Denim is a staple that can be dressed up or down, making it perfect for the transitional season. Try pairing a denim jacket with a summer dress to create a more autumn-ready ensemble, or opt for high-waisted jeans that can be paired with cosy sweaters. Boots: Start introducing ankle boots and knee-high boots that can be worn with dresses, skirts, and jeans as the weather cools down. Boots are not only practical for cooler temperatures but also add a chic touch to any outfit. Experiment with different styles and materials, such as leather or suede, to find the perfect pair that complements your wardrobe. Accessories: Don’t forget to update your accessories as well. Swap out your summer straw hats for felt fedoras or berets, and trade lightweight tote bags for structured leather handbags. Scarves, gloves, and statement jewelry can also enhance your transitional outfits and add a touch of personality. Textures: Embrace the variety of textures that come with autumn fashion. Think corduroy, wool, and knits that add warmth and interest to your outfits. Mixing different textures can create a rich and layered look that is both stylish and functional for the changing season. Stay ahead of the fashion curve by incorporating these trends into your wardrobe as you move from summer to autumn. Whether you’re dressing for a casual day out or a more formal event, these transitional pieces will ensure you look effortlessly chic and seasonally appropriate.

BEHIND THE BRAND SFM: We’re intrigued by the unique name of your brand. Could you delve into the inspiration behind ‘Aphia Himanuel’ and explain how it encapsulates the essence and values of your luxury footwear line? AH: The name Aphia Himanuel holds deep personal and cultural significance. Aphia is inspired by a name that resonates with grace, strength, and authenticity, qualities deeply rooted in many African cultures. It symbolizes the spirit of craftsmanship and resilience that we aim to embody in every piece we create. On the other hand, Himanuel is inspired by my name. SFM: Your collections are renowned for their seamless fusion of African heritage and Western design aesthetics. Can you elaborate on your approach to achieving this harmonious balance, and how it manifests in the intricate details of your shoes? AH: Our approach to blending African heritage with Western design aesthetics starts with a deep respect for tradition and a keen eye for contemporary trends. At Aphia Himanuel, we begin the creative process by researching and drawing inspiration from various African art forms, textiles, and traditional motifs. This could be anything from the geometric patterns of West African Kente cloth to the intricate beadwork seen in East African designs. These elements are then reimagined in a way that honors their roots while aligning with the sleek, sophisticated lines of Western footwear fashion. The balance is achieved through a detailed process of design iteration, where traditional influences are woven seamlessly into modern shoe silhouettes. For example, we might integrate bold, vibrant patterns as lining details or incorporate artisanal weaving techniques into the shoe’s structure, maintaining an understated elegance that appeals to a global audience. The use of high-quality, locally sourced materials such as vegetable-tanned leather or natural dyes ensures authenticity while adhering to sustainable practices. This fusion manifests in the details: handcrafted stitching that echoes the embroidery techniques of African tribes, embossed symbols that tell stories of heritage, or unique color palettes that evoke the rich landscapes and artistic expressions of the continent. At the same time, Western influences shape the structure and functionality, incorporating clean lines, contemporary shapes, and refined finishes to match luxury standards. Ultimately, our shoes are wearable art pieces that speak to the wearer’s appreciation for both cultural depth and modern sophistication. This blend of heritage and innovation is at the heart of every pair, representing a true homage to our dual inspirations and appealing to customers who value craftsmanship that tells a story. SFM: In a market saturated with luxury men’s footwear brands, what distinctive features or philosophy sets Aphia Himanuel apart? How do you ensure your brand maintains its unique identity? AH: Harmonizing Tradition and Modernity: We maintain our unique identity by constantly evolving while staying true to our roots.Aphia Himanuel seamlessly marries African artistry with contemporary Western aesthetics, offering shoes that appeal to those who seek elegance with an edge. Our design philosophy emphasizes balance—luxurious enough for high-end fashion but infused with character and meaning. To ensure we stand out in a saturated market, we rely on authenticity and the storytelling element inherent in our brand. We embrace limited edition runs, creating exclusivity, and offer bespoke services for clients who wish to be part of the design journey. This approach not only maintains our brand’s uniqueness but also cultivates a loyal following of customers who value individuality, quality, and the deeper significance behind what they wear. SFM: We’d love to gain insight into your creative process. Could you guide us through the journey of conceptualising and bringing to life a new Aphia Himanuel collection, from initial inspiration to final product? AH: The journey of conceptualizing and bringing to life an Aphia Himanuel collection is an immersive process that blends research, design, craftsmanship, and continuous refinement. It’s a meticulous yet creative journey that ensures each collection embodies our commitment to quality and storytelling. Here’s how the process unfolds: Every new collection starts with an idea, often sparked by a specific aspect of African heritage—be it a historical event, a traditional art form, or cultural symbolism. Once the theme is chosen, we create mood boards that compile visual elements, colour palettes, and materials associated with the inspiration. With design sketches in place, the next step is sourcing high-quality, sustainable materials. This includes premium leathers, natural dyes, and other eco-friendly components that align with our sustainability ethos. Prototypes are reviewed rigorously for functionality, comfort, and aesthetic appeal. Adjustments are made based on both practical and artistic considerations, ensuring the shoes are not only beautiful but also wearable. Before a collection is launched, each piece undergoes thorough quality checks to confirm it meets our high standards for comfort, durability, and design integrity. The final step is sharing the collection with the world. SFM: Maintaining exceptional quality and craftsmanship while staying attuned to evolving fashion trends can be challenging. How does Aphia Himanuel navigate this balance, ensuring timeless elegance without compromising on contemporary appeal? AH: At Aphia Himanuel, maintaining exceptional quality and craftsmanship while staying current with fashion trends is a delicate balance we handle with strategic foresight and an unwavering commitment to our core values. SFM: Building a premium footwear brand undoubtedly comes with its set of obstacles. What has been the most formidable challenge you’ve faced in establishing Aphia Himanuel, and how did you successfully overcome it? AH: Building a premium footwear brand like Aphia Himanuel has been a journey filled with both inspiring moments and formidable challenges. The most significant challenge we faced was bridging the gap between maintaining the highest standards of craftsmanship and scaling up our production without compromising the integrity of our work. Our brand prides itself on shoes that are meticulously handcrafted, with each piece embodying a unique blend of African heritage and modern luxury. However, as the demand for our products grew, the challenge lay in expanding our production capacity while ensuring every pair maintained the same level of quality and attention to detail. This was especially difficult because artisanal techniques are time-intensive and require skilled labor that cannot be rushed or easily replicated. To tackle this, we invested time and resources into training programs and partnerships with artisan communities. By expanding our network of skilled craftsmen who share our commitment to quality, we were able to increase our output without sacrificing the personal touch that makes our brand unique.

BEHIND THE BRAND SFM: We’re intrigued by the story behind Ayah. Could you walk us through the journey that led to founding your menswear brand? What were the key inspirations or experiences that shaped your vision? AY: My journey began in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, where I grew up immersed in rich cultural expressions. Even as I pursued a degree in Microbiology, I always held a deep passion for fashion, envisioning a brand that could blend modern style with traditional elements. In 2018, I founded Ayah International, driven by a desire to make Nigerian artistry accessible and relevant to a global audience. My inspiration was not only to create beautiful garments but to empower local artisans and celebrate the rich, diverse culture of Nigeria through every design. SFM: Your collections have a distinct aesthetic. How would you articulate the signature style of Ayah’s designs? What elements or principles consistently define your brand’s look? AY: Ayah’s style can be described as a blend of contemporary sophistication and cultural richness. We embrace bold colours, intricate patterns, and tailored silhouettes that bring a sense of elegance and refinement to everyday wear. Consistent across all our designs is the use of indigenous fabrics and patterns that tell a story, making each piece visually engaging yet sophisticated for the modern man. SFM: Cultural heritage seems to play a significant role in your creations, especially in your traditional wear. Could you elaborate on how you incorporate and honour various cultural influences in your designs? Are there specific traditions or art forms that particularly resonate with your brand ethos? AY: Cultural heritage is central to Ayah’s identity. We incorporate traditional Nigerian weaving techniques and patterns, inspired by various ethnic groups, especially those with a history of textile artistry like the Yoruba and Igbo communities. We aim to honour these influences by ensuring authenticity and by working directly with local artisans who are the custodians of these traditions. This approach allows us to honour our heritage meaningfully. SFM: Ayah is known for striking a balance between sophistication and comfort, particularly in your casual ensembles. Can you share your approach to achieving this equilibrium? How do you ensure that your pieces are both stylish and wearable for the modern man? AY: Comfort and sophistication are key to our designs. We achieve this balance by using high-quality, breathable materials and focusing on tailored yet relaxed fits. For example, in our casual collections, we incorporate soft fabrics like locally sourced cotton and linen, which allow for ease of movement without compromising on style. Our goal is to create pieces that feel as good as they look. SFM: The devil is in the details, as they say. Could you provide some insights into your design process, particularly focusing on how you ensure meticulous attention to detail? Are there any specific techniques or quality control measures you employ to maintain the high standards Ayah is known for? AY: We emphasise details in every phase, from initial sketches to the final product. Our artisans meticulously check each piece, focusing on stitching quality, fabric finish, and design consistency. Additionally, we incorporate hand-embroidery techniques and traditional beadwork, elements that require precision. Quality control is paramount, and every garment undergoes multiple reviews to ensure it meets Ayah’s standards. SFM: The men’s fashion industry is highly competitive. In your opinion, what unique qualities or values set Ayah apart from other brands in this space? How do you maintain this edge in an ever-evolving market? AY: Ayah’s uniqueness lies in its commitment to celebrating Nigerian culture through sophisticated yet accessible designs. Unlike other brands, Ayah integrates cultural elements authentically while maintaining a global appeal. To stay competitive, we keep innovating, blending tradition with modern trends and collaborating with artisans who bring fresh perspectives to our collections. SFM: Looking towards the future, how do you envision Ayah’s evolution in the coming years? Are there any new directions, collaborations, or innovations you’re particularly excited about? AY: The future for Ayah involves expanding internationally and establishing collaborations that further our mission of cultural representation. We’re exploring partnerships with sustainable fabric producers and international designers interested in African heritage. Additionally, we plan to launch a women’s line, bringing Ayah’s unique blend of tradition and innovation to a broader audience. SFM: Every designer has pieces they hold dear. Could you share with us a particular garment or collection from Ayah that you’re especially proud of? What makes this creation stand out for you personally? AY: I’m particularly proud of our De Nouveau collection. It encapsulates everything Ayah stands for—celebrating African heritage while being innovative. The collection’s intricate beadwork and bold, indigenous patterns speak to my roots and demonstrate our artisans’ craftsmanship. SFM: The concept of the “modern gentleman” seems central to Ayah’s philosophy. How would you define this archetype, and in what ways does this vision influence your design choices and overall brand direction? AY: For Ayah, the “modern gentleman” is someone who values elegance, respects heritage, and embraces authenticity. This archetype influences our designs to be stylish yet respectful of tradition, versatile yet refined. We create pieces for those who want to look polished but also feel connected to their cultural roots.

BEHIND THE BRAND SFM: Your De Nouveau collection has garnered significant attention. Could you delve into the creative process behind this collection? What were the primary sources of inspiration that guided its development? AY: De Nouveau was inspired by a desire to showcase the richness of African culture through a modern lens. I wanted to create pieces that conveyed history and artistry while being contemporary. The creative process involved researching traditional symbols and motifs and reinterpreting them in fresh, innovative ways that would resonate with a global audience. SFM: The De Nouveau collection is a beautiful celebration of African heritage and culture. Could you elaborate on the specific ways in which this collection pays homage to African traditions? Are there particular symbols, patterns, or techniques that you’ve incorporated? AY: We incorporated symbols from traditional Nigerian textiles and beadwork into the De Nouveau collection. For example, some designs feature geometric patterns that symbolize unity and resilience. The beadwork is inspired by ancient African techniques, each bead representing a piece of African artistry that adds depth to the garment. SFM: We’d love to hear more about your personal connection to African heritage. How have your own background and experiences influenced the creation of the De Nouveau collection? Are there any family stories or childhood memories that played a role in shaping this line? AY: Growing up in Bayelsa, I was surrounded by vibrant fabrics and cultural festivals that left a strong impression on me. I remember my grandmother’s stories about traditional cloth weaving, which influenced my desire to incorporate such elements. De Nouveau is a homage to those memories and a celebration of my heritage. SFM: Beadwork features prominently in the De Nouveau collection. Could you educate our readers about the historical and cultural significance of beadwork in various African cultures? How does incorporating this element add depth to your designs? AY: Beadwork in African culture represents status, tradition, and artistry. Incorporating beadwork into De Nouveau adds a layer of authenticity and respect for these traditions, allowing each piece to tell a story that resonates beyond fashion. This intricate detailing connects wearers to Africa’s rich cultural history. SFM: Blending traditional elements with contemporary fashion can be a delicate balance. How do you approach this fusion in the De Nouveau collection? Can you walk us through your process of reimagining traditional African design elements for a modern wardrobe? AY: I approach this by focusing on the essence of the traditional element, whether it’s a pattern or textile technique, and then adapting it to suit modern tastes. For example, we took traditional beading and incorporated it into sleek, contemporary silhouettes that are both fashionable and culturally evocative. SFM: Creating a collection that authentically represents African heritage while appealing to a global audience must have presented unique challenges. Could you share some of the obstacles you encountered during this process and how you overcame them? AY: Balancing authenticity with global appeal was challenging, as was sourcing sustainable materials. We overcame these by collaborating closely with artisans who understand both local and international markets and by maintaining transparency about our design choices to educate consumers on the significance behind each element. SFM: Africa is a vast continent with diverse cultures. Are there specific regions or ethnic groups whose artistic traditions particularly influenced the De Nouveau collection? How did you research and incorporate these influences respectfully? AY: The Yoruba and Igbo traditions, known for their textiles and beadwork, were major influences. I conducted extensive research and consulted local artisans to understand these practices in depth, ensuring that our incorporation of these elements was respectful and authentic. SFM: Fashion has the power to spark important conversations. How do you see the De Nouveau collection contributing to broader discussions about cultural representation and diversity in the fashion industry? What message do you hope this collection conveys to your audience and the industry at large? AH: De Nouveau aims to redefine African fashion by presenting it as both high art and everyday wear. I hope it sparks a conversation about the richness of African heritage and encourages the fashion industry to embrace diversity. This collection is a call to honour one’s roots while looking forward to the future. SFM: Many of our readers look to Ayah for style inspiration. What key pieces of advice would you offer to men who are looking to elevate their personal style? Are there any timeless rules or innovative approaches you’d recommend for creating a sophisticated wardrobe? AY: Elevating personal style is about finding a balance between confidence, comfort, and authenticity. For men looking to refine their wardrobe, I always recommend starting with timeless essentials—pieces that work across various occasions and that you can mix and match. For instance, a well-fitted blazer, tailored trousers, and high-quality basics like a crisp white shirt or versatile chinos are key. In terms of timeless rules, fit is paramount. No matter how stylish a piece is, if it doesn’t fit well, it won’t look good. Prioritize tailored fits that suit your body shape, as they add an instant touch of sophistication. Additionally, embracing a cohesive colour palette helps create a wardrobe that looks effortlessly stylish; neutral tones paired with occasional bold accents work wonders. For a modern approach, don’t shy away from cultural or personal influences in your wardrobe. Incorporating pieces that have cultural significance or subtle details that reflect your heritage adds character and individuality. I also suggest investing in quality fabrics that feel good and age well, as well as experimenting with textures like linen, wool, or leather to add depth to your look. Finally, accessorizing is often overlooked but can truly elevate an outfit. Consider adding a statement watch, a tasteful scarf, or even understated jewellery for an added layer of sophistication. The goal is to build a wardrobe that feels authentic to who you are but is also versatile and timeless.

The brand was born from a vision to create timeless, sophisticated pieces that empower women and celebrate their unique beauty through exquisite detailing and luxurious fabrics. SFM: Cultural heritage seems to play a significant role in your creations. Can you elaborate on how you incorporate cultural elements into your design process and the importance of preserving heritage through fashion? SFM: We’d love to get a glimpse into your creative world. Could you walk us through your design process for a new collection, from the initial concept to the final product? OA: For the Adunni collection, I started with a vision to celebrate grace and strength, qualities that embody the Ololade Atelier woman. I began by gathering inspiration around themes of elegance and resilience, capturing these through soft yet striking colors and rich textures. After sketching out the initial concepts, I carefully selected fabrics that would bring the collection’s essence to life. Each design is refined with a focus on flow, detail, and structure, ensuring that every piece in the Adunni collection tells a story of sophistication and empowerment. Finally, we bring these pieces to life with precision, capturing the essence of Adunni in every stitch. SFM: The quality of materials is crucial in high-end fashion. How do you approach fabric sourcing for Ololade Atelier? What specific criteria guide your selection process, and are there any unique materials you particularly favour? OA: For Ololade Atelier, fabric selection is at the heart of each design. I prioritize materials that offer both elegance and longevity, seeking out luxurious fabrics that feel beautiful against the skin and move gracefully. Quality and texture are key—I look for fabrics that enhance the design’s structure and embody the collection’s vision. The goal is to ensure that every fabric feels as special as the woman wearing it. SFM: Your latest Adunni Collection beautifully blends elegance with bold, modern design. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind this collection and how it represents the evolution of Ololade Atelier? I wanted this collection to feel both powerful and refined, with clean lines, rich textures, and vibrant accents that stand out. It marks a new chapter for Ololade Atelier, pushing the boundaries of our signature sophistication with a more daring, contemporary edge. Adunni reflects our evolution, blending timeless beauty with a fresh, modern confidence that speaks to today’s woman. SFM: The Adunni Collection features timeless silhouettes that accentuate the body. How do you approach creating designs that are both flattering and empowering for women? OA: When designing the Adunni Collection, my focus was on creating silhouettes that naturally celebrate the female form without overpowering it. I work with lines and cuts that enhance a woman’s natural shape, paying attention to how the fabric drapes and moves with her. My goal is for each piece to feel empowering, giving her confidence through fit, elegance, and comfort. I believe clothing should elevate a woman’s presence, allowing her to feel both strong and graceful in her own skin. SFM: From daring gowns to sophisticated evening wear, the Adunni Collection offers a diverse range. How do you ensure each piece maintains the collection’s cohesive theme while catering to different style preferences? OA: In the Adunni Collection, I wanted each piece to embody the same essence of bold elegance while offering versatility for different tastes. I focus on a unifying color palette, textures, and design details that tie everything together, creating harmony across the collection. While each piece has its own character—some daring, others more understated—they all share a refined aesthetic and thoughtful craftsmanship. This balance allows the collection to feel cohesive yet adaptable, meeting a variety of style preferences without losing its core identity.

BEHIND THE BRAND SFM: Hassana Duada places a strong emphasis on femininity and women’s empowerment. What are the brand’s future aims and ideas for designs and silhouettes? HD: Currently, we only have a couple of dresses and one pantsuit. In the future, we’ll definitely incorporate more variety, and perhaps some colour. We want to experiment with colour, expand the range, and create two-piece sets that can be mixed and matched. SFM: Could you share some insights into how Hassana Duada draws inspiration from historical fashion and cultural elements, and how these influences are thoughtfully incorporated into the brand’s contemporary designs and aesthetic vision? HD: The brand as a whole is very vintage inspired, but I’m inspired by vintage eras, and I love British culture - especially the 50s with thin skirt waistlines. SFM: How does Hassana Duada maintain its contemporary relevance and continue to resonate with modern fashion-conscious individuals while staying true to its design philosophy? HD: Hassana Duada strives to modernize our designs by adapting current trends to suit our customer base. Rather than strictly following trends, we focus on creating timeless elegance that women seek—pieces that can be passed down through generations. SFM: How does Hassana Duada conduct comprehensive market research and analysis within the womens wear sector to identify, understand, and effectively connect with its target audience? HD: We conduct thorough market research by staying closely connected with our target audience through various channels. Our understanding of the UK market, particularly regarding different body types and consumer preferences, helps inform our design decisions. We’ve found that versatile pieces using stretch fabrics are particularly successful, as they accommodate diverse body shapes while maintaining our signature aesthetic. Our research has also shown that our customers appreciate our ability to balance classic femininity with contemporary appeal. We create pieces that are simultaneously modest and sophisticated, yet retain an element of sensual elegance. This approach allows our designs to remain commercially viable while staying true to our brand identity. SFM: Does the brand draw inspiration for its target audience from any particular figures in society, music, or film? HD: We draw inspiration many avenues. For this collection, one could draw from the timeless elegance of Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn in ‘Death Becomes Her’, where their characters embodied sophistication and glamour. There is also the transformative power of fashion as portrayed in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, another Meryl Streep masterpiece that perfectly captures the essence of high fashion and personal evolution through style. SFM: How does your personality as a designer shine through in this collection, and is there a connection between your personal identity and the brand’s identity? HD: The identity between myself and the brand is very similar, because the collection, even if it’s very, like, flamboyant in a very gentle and calm way, it’s giving quiet luxury. It’s very demure, very mindful. SFM: How does this collection differ from your previous collections, and what elements particularly stand out in this new collection? HD: Our last collection featured a striking contrast between polka dots and shimmering lace—both in black. After a three-year hiatus, this is our first collection launch. We’re now developing our next collection for release next year, which will likely embrace more colour while building on our commitment to timeless elegance and women’s empowerment. SFM: Thank you, Hassana, for sharing your inspiring journey and the remarkable story behind Hassana Duada. Your dedication to blending timeless elegance with contemporary sophistication, while maintaining exceptional craftsmanship, truly sets your brand apart in the world of women’s fashion. We look forward to witnessing the continued evolution of Hassana Duada and the innovative designs you’ll bring to the fashion landscape. Best wishes for your future endeavors.

SPOTLIGHT ON.... SFM: As a designer exploring Avant Garde shapes and tailoring, what inspired you to pursue this particular aesthetic in fashion design? HH: I always love how designers express themselves on the catwalk, and this is what inspired me to design the way I do. SFM: Can you walk us through your creative process when designing a new collection? How do you balance innovation with wearability? HH: When designing a new collection, I always do my research first. I always find something to inspire me—this could be taking pictures on holiday. I make sure that the piece is wearable first, but I like to design something different and be creative to stand out from the crowd. SFM: Your work spans both women’s and men’s wear. How do you approach designing for different genders, and do you see any convergence in these areas? HH: Designing for different genders is super fun, but the most important thing to me is the fit of a jacket from a female to a male. I don’t approach this differently, but my research would be a lot different. SFM: What role does sustainability play in your design philosophy and production methods? HH: I always make sure I use good quality fabric, such as 100% wool or real leather. This is because the fabric will last longer, and the consumer won’t have to buy again. SFM: Who are some of the designers or artists that have influenced your work, and how have they shaped your approach to fashion? HH: Designers that influence my work are Schiaparelli, Dior, and Alexander McQueen. This is because they create beautiful pieces that are still wearable but are creatively different. SFM: Can you tell us about a particularly challenging piece you’ve created and how you overcame the obstacles in bringing it to life? HH: So, the big skirt in my collection was very difficult to make, as this is an unusual shape to pattern cut. To create the pattern for the bottom of the skirt, I had to cover this in masking tape to create the pattern from that. SFM: How do you see the future of Avant Garde fashion evolving, and what role do you hope to play in shaping that future? HH: I see the future developing as people are now wanting one-of-a-kind pieces that other people don’t have. I hope to create beautiful pieces that will last and will be kept for a long time. SFM: Your designs often push the boundaries of traditional tailoring. How do you balance artistic expression with the practical aspects of clothing? HH: I always make sure that the tailored jacket fits well first, and then I will push boundaries and create something unusual. SFM: What advice would you give to aspiring designers who are interested in exploring unconventional fashion? HH: I always say be yourself and create what you want to create. Never let anyone influence your decision. SFM: Looking ahead, what can we expect from your upcoming collection? Are there any themes or concepts you’re particularly excited about? HH: Looking ahead, I think I am going to start going into ready-to-wear pieces and maybe start with dresses.

SPOTLIGHT ON.... SFM: What inspired the creation of Eklipsa, and how does the name reflect your brand philosophy? EK: Growing up, I always had this desire to stand out when it came to my style, and at my tender age, I already knew what I wanted to wear and how to wear it. I noticed stylists and fashion designers never understood what I wanted, and they always had issues with me, as I would always correct them and sometimes abandon the outfits because they never got it right. That was when I decided to learn how to make my own clothes. While I made my own clothes, I made them for my friends as well, because they trusted that I could make them look good like myself. That was when I thought it would be more fun to make people look good, because it gives me some form of fulfillment and self-satisfaction. The name EKLIPSA means standing out in a way that captures attention much like a rare and beautiful eclipse, and that is a perfect definition of what the brand stands for. SFM: Can you describe the unique design elements that set Eklipsa apart in the fashion industry? EK: EKLIPSA draws its elements from relatable materials from the environment, recycled materials, and items that paint pictures of beautiful, interesting, and edgy stories. It is not just about wearing clothes, but wearing art and tales that everyone can relate to. It builds curiosity and suspense, as everyone has something different and unique to say about our outfits. SFM: How does Eklipsa balance sophistication with innovation in its designs? EK: We believe every innovation has its own sophistication. EKLIPSA tries to balance new trends with its unique style, edginess and fierceness. This sets us apart. SFM: In what ways does Eklipsa strive to create impact in the community through fashion? EK: EKLIPSA takes into consideration every individual and their uniqueness. We believe strongly in cultural values and strive to create interesting and relatable stories that stay ahead of trends. SFM: How does Eklipsa cater to individual uniqueness in its design process and product range? EK: As stated earlier, we listen to our clients and study what we can about them. We give them what suits them, what they can relate to, and what they are comfortable in. Every individual carries a unique story, and when listened to, we can create a masterpiece that embraces these stories. SFM: Can you share some insights into Eklipsa’s sustainable and ethical practices, if any? EK: EKLIPSA embraces recycled, low-impact and innovative materials. We are an eco-friendly brand and create clothing that does not cause harm to the planet. We do not produce bulk outfits; we only produce when there is a specific need, and so there is no waste. SFM: What has been the most challenging aspect of growing Eklipsa as a brand? EK: Obviously, every aspect of growing a brand is challenging, from idea conception to production, to marketing and execution. But because we know what we’re doing and are conscious about it, we are making everything work and keeping everyone happy as much as we can. SFM: How do you envision Eklipsa evolving in the next five years? EK: EKLIPSA is a luxurious and unique brand that captures the uniqueness and mirrors the personality of individuals. In the next five years, we aim at exposing people to who they truly are and how fearless they can look and act, breaking into the international market, styling celebrities and unique individuals, working with other top brands, and occupying the fashion industry at large. EKLIPSA is not just a brand for clothes, but that is what we are starting with. In a couple of years’ time, there will be loads of breakaway lines satisfying various needs and making individuals stand out. SFM: Can you tell us about a particular design or collection that you feel best represents Eklipsa’s mission? EK: EK: Our latest Vyral collection is a perfect description of what the brand stands for, from embracing recycled materials to creating unique pieces that tell captivating stories. We made a blazer out of recycled spoons, Scrabble tiles, and straws. I went to this event and noticed how used straws and rubber spoons were meant to be disposed of. These straws were very colorful and unique. I asked to take these straws and then created this lovely piece out of them. Also, I took the spoons and created a blazer jacket, using the spoons to creatively decorate it. We made an outfit out of antique materials (100 sets of distinct keys, coins, and gears). These pieces are very relatable, remind us of our heritage, who we truly are, and are also friendly to the environment. SFM: How does Eklipsa engage with its customer base to ensure it’s meeting their needs and expectations? EK: EKLIPSA considers every individual as different and unique, so we listen and work with every customer, considering their needs, fears, likes, fantasies, and vision. When each customer looks in the mirror, they are proud of what they see. They can totally relate, as it is their own story coming alive. We have our website EKLIPSA. com and our social media where we engage with clients, know them, and give them the opportunity to know us as well.

NM: The biggest challenge I have faced in my career was losing my amazing mother in 2020, who inspired me and pushed me to follow my dreams of doing fashion design at university. I had my tutor, family, and friends that I stay in contact with support me throughout my degree, as it took a huge effect on me to the point where I doubted myself that I wasn’t going to pass. But the more I focused on completing my degree, I realized that I had to do this for mum and my daughter. SFM: How do you balance creativity with commercial viability in your designs? NM: I think its important to know what fabric/styles your customer likes in order to produce the right garments, a nice fitted outfit makes you feel good about yourself. SFM: What role does sustainability play in your design process and brand ethos? NM: Any leftover fabric from my garments, I either give to my friends who are into fashion design, donate to the Community Centre where I live if they are doing a craft project, or keep in my fabric box for the next project I will be working on. SFM: Who are some designers or artists that have influenced your work? NM: Vivienne Westwood, Versace, Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Nicki Minaj, RuPaul, and Saucy Santana. SFM: Can you tell us about a favourite piece you’ve designed and the story behind it? NM: The jumpsuit, which has one long leg and one short leg in the design, was created for my little sister who modeled it for my graduate collection. It was a hit on the runway, as many people from the audience complimented the design of the jumpsuit. SFM: How do you see the fashion industry evolving in the next few years? NM: It’s going to evolve a lot more in the next few years, especially with the techwear clothing that is being introduced now. I think in 5 years’ time it’s going to be a lot more advanced and more diverse. SFM: What advice would you give to aspiring fashion designers? NM: Always be yourself, even within your designs. Don’t be afraid to do something different and unique, be diverse too—especially when it comes to your models—and set yourself challenges that you haven’t done before.

n an unexpected twist, the fashion world is witnessing a revival of corporate power symbols, particularly the once-maligned necktie. Far from being relics of a bygone era, these classic elements are making a bold comeback on the runways, albeit with a fresh and subversive twist. Designers are cleverly repurposing these traditional symbols of corporate power as a commentary on late-stage capitalism and the changing landscape of work. However, this isn’t your grandfather’s Wall Street suit. The new wave of power dressing is all about redefining and dismantling conventional notions of authority. As we navigate this new era of power dressing, one thing is clear: the suit and tie are back, but they’re anything but business as usual.

The key is to pair these with unexpected accessories for a fresh take on power dressing.

- 2. Country Chic: Tweeds, herringbones, and argyles are trending, evoking a sense of country-house weekends. Argyle jumpers and sturdy tweed coats are must-have pieces this season. - 3. Reimagined Camo: Camouflage prints are getting a fashionable makeover with expressionistic takes on the traditional pattern. Expect to see camo in unexpected forms, from ladylike dresses to sequined party wear. - 5. Two-Dimensional Dressing: Designers are playing with flatness, creating garments with spliced elements and paper doll-like features. This trend creates an intriguing visual effect between the body and the clothing. - 6. Tactile Topcoats: Voluminous, pettable outerwear made from faux fur, feathers, and other tactile materials will be big this autumn. These statement pieces are designed to be seen and felt.

From tinseled knits to sparkly accents on tailored pieces, a little shimmer goes a long way. - 10. Le Smoking Suiting: Evening wear gets a suiting makeover with the return of the Le Smoking style. Expect to see tuxedoinspired looks complete with all the trimmings. - 11. Duvet Dressing: Comfort meets style with quilted and padded pieces that bring a cozy, bed-like feel to your wardrobe. This trend extends beyond coats to include unexpected items like miniskirts and ballgowns.
