Exhibitions 21 February onward

Dylan’s Swansea Gallery One This exhibition celebrates the Swansea that Dylan knew, where he was born, grew up, worked and played and how this influenced his work. The exhibition features Wyn Thomas’ wonderful illustrations of some of Dylan’s haunts around the town itself, Uplands, Mumbles and Gower. Swansea Museum has worked with author and Dylan enthusiast Jeff Towns in presenting an exhibition that tries to understand how the pubs, places and people of Swansea were so influential to his work. 10 February – 6 April

Swansea Arts Society – “The colour of saying. Reflections on the life and work of Dylan Thomas” Long Gallery Swansea Arts Society was formed in 1886, for both amateur and professional artists to come together and produce original work for exhibitions. Former members have included Will Evans, Alfred Janes, Kenneth Hancock, Grant Murray, Dorothy Kirkman, Alfred Lavender, Irene Bache, Evan Walters, Ronald and Glenys Cour. The Society has a long established link with Swansea Museum and we are happy to present an exhibition of their work which reflects the life and work of Dylan Thomas in his centenary year.

14 April – 15 June

Cardiff Metropolitan University Photographic Practice Students Present – “Inspired by the work of Dylan Thomas” Long Gallery The group consists of ten second year students who have chosen to photographically interpret the words of Dylan Thomas. Each student will use their unique perspective to produce a body of work that will reflect the rich and diverse prose of Dylan Thomas. The group have chosen pieces that will positively reflect Thomas’ legacy and Welsh heritage. 22 July – 18 January 2015

Swansea and the Great War 1914 – 1918 Gallery One The 28th July 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the start of one of the most catastrophic wars in European history. Over 60 million people were mobilised for the armed forces alone. Young men signed up to serve in their thousands from all over Britain including, of course, Swansea and South Wales. Many of those who signed up never came home and those who did were often greatly affected by the events they witnessed. The exhibition will focus on the stories of several Swansea individuals who were involved in the Great War. As well as the stories of the men who went to fight the exhibition will also reveal the struggles faced by women who were left behind. It will look at their contribution to the war effort and we will also explore the stories of those who conscientiously objected.

21 June – 7 Sept

City Witness: Medieval Swansea Long Gallery In 1290, a Welshman, William Cragh, was hanged in Swansea by the Anglo-Norman Lord of Gower – but that wasn’t the end of the story... This exhibition uses the strange tale of William Cragh as the starting-point for exploring medieval Swansea, drawing on the major new research project City Witness: Place and Perspective in Medieval Swansea (www.medievalswansea.ac.uk), including maps, digital visualisations and artefacts from the Swansea Museum collection. Free activities and workshops linked to the exhibition will run on Friday June 20 and Saturday June 21: please contact the Museum for more information.

HOW TO FIND US Swansea Museum is located on Victoria Road in the Maritime Quarter of Swansea (SA1 1SN). The Collections Centre can be found next to the Park and Ride car park, opposite the Liberty Stadium, in Landore, Swansea (SA1 2JT).

Daeth dynion ifanc i gofrestru yn eu miloedd ledled Prydain, gan gynnwys, wrth gwrs, Abertawe a de Cymru. Ni ddychwelodd llawer o’r rhai a gofrestrodd gartref ac roedd y rhai a ddaeth gartref wedi’u heffeithio’n ofnadwy gan yr hyn roeddent wedi ei weld. Bydd yr arddangosfa yn canolbwyntio ar straeon sawl unigolyn o Abertawe a oedd yn rhan o’r Rhyfel Mawr.
