OLIVER REYNOLDS Oliver Reynolds was born in Cardiff. Hodge, his fifth book of poetry, was published in 2010 and described by The Guardian as “an enjoyable, witty and weighty collection”. He lives in London and works as an usher at the Royal Opera House. Includes open mic.

MARTYN CRUCEFIX: SONNETS TO ORPHEUS Martyn Crucefix reads from his translation of Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus. Martyn has won numerous prizes, including a major Eric Gregory award and a Hawthornden Fellowship. He has published five collections, including Hurt (Enitharmon, 2010). His translation of Rilke’s Duino Elegies was shortlisted for the 2007 Popescu Prize for European Poetry Translation and Magma writes that it is “unlikely to be bettered for very many years”. MARTYN CRUCEFIX: DEFEATING THE BLANK PAGE! In this workshop, Martyn Crucefix will introduce interesting and wellstructured exercises so that participants will leave with five or six poems well on the way to completion. From devising name trails, extending the simple haiku form and writing about sacred objects, we will work in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. A NICE DRINK BY JUDE GARNER Jude Garner’s A Nice Drink won the Drama Association of Wales’ One Act Play competition 2012, judged by acclaimed playwright Ian Rowlands. POETS AT THE DTC WITH JO BELL Jo Bell’s poetry is about archaeology, friendship, boats and sex - all the important things in life. Former Director of National Poetry Day and poet in residence for Glastonbury Festival, Jo works and performs across the UK. Often working in collaboration with others, her current project is a joint book with Martin Malone about fortysomething lovers and the difficulties they face. THE BLIZZARD AND THE OUTSIDER Join us for an evening of two halves. Jonathan Wilson discusses his latest book, The Outsider: A History of the Goalkeeper. His other titles include Inverting the Pyramid, a history of football tactics that was named Football Book of the Year in 2009, and Nobody Ever Says Thank You, a biography of Brian Clough. He also edits The Blizzard, a quarterly journal of football writing that gives its authors the freedom to write the football stories that matter to them, be that at the highest level or the lowest, at home or abroad. We also launch the latest issue of The Blizzard with one of their legendary Q & A sessions. Jonathan, co-editor David Rose and other journalists will discuss all things football with the audience, and offer their views on the afternoon’s game between Swansea City and Arsenal.

The evening’s politically charged readings include a performance of ‘An Opera in Baghdad’, from Robert Minhinnick’s New Selected Poems (Carcanet), featuring actress Tracy Evans. It was written after Minhinnick’s visit to Iraq in 1997, and addresses the political and environmental destruction wrought by the ongoing war in Iraq. In his latest collection, Barkin!, Mike Jenkins captures both the craziness and tragedy of his home town. Using Merthyr’s vibrant vernacular, Jenkins writes about people who try to defy the oppression of a system which has made it one of the poorest places in the UK. R.S. THOMAS: A CELEBRATION An evening of poetry, music and discussion to mark the centenary of R.S. Thomas’ birth. Professor M. Wynn Thomas, the executor of Thomas’ unpublished literary estate, launches his new book, R.S. Thomas: Serial Obsessive. There will also be specially commissioned contemporary responses to Thomas’ work in poetry and music from Menna Elfyn, Brian Breeze and others. Specially written for Welsh Fargo Theatre Company, this play follows the adventures of two writers as they travel through Europe.
Emily Hinshelwood’s new collection, On Becoming a Fish, was inspired by a series of walks around the 186 mile Pembrokeshire coastal path. Deeply engaged with environmental issues through her work in community energy and climate change, the author is also a keen observer of human nature in the context of this beautiful coastline.
