INTRODUCTION Welcome to the 2019 Environmental Events Swansea booklet which includes details of over 250 events taking place in and around Swansea from April to December. These include a wide variety of walks, talks, workshops and activities to encourage people of all ages to enjoy nature. Most of the events are FREE or at low cost so everyone can join in. Look out for several special events and festivals during the year, such as Spring Clean Cymru in April; Wales Nature Week, Gower Walking Festival and Bike Week UK in June; the Beach Sculpture Festival in July; the Gower Show in August and the annual Green Fayre in November. The Further Information section at the back of the booklet provides details of over 40 local organisations and projects that organise events and activities linked to the environment. Throughout the year, further information on activities and events will be posted on various websites and social media. If you have relevant events that you wish to be included in the next edition, or promoted online during the year, please get in touch (contact details below). This booklet is produced by Swansea Council's Nature Conservation Team with funding from the Welsh Government Single Revenue Grant. GOWER AONB SUMMER SEASHORE SAFARIS This year's cover photo is by Judith Oakley, an accomplished local photographer and marine biologist. Once again, Judith will be leading a number of Summer Seashore Safaris this year. These free, fun and educational events, supported by the Gower AONB Team and NRW, take place on beaches along the Gower coast. Discover the amazing and colourful hidden seashore life right on our doorstep. CYFLWYNIAD Croeso i lyfryn Digwyddiadau Amgylcheddol Abertawe 2019 sy'n nodi manylion dros 250 o ddigwyddiadau a gynhelir yn Abertawe ac o'i hamgylch rhwng mis Ebrill a mis Rhagfyr. BIODIVERSITY IN SWANSEA Swansea has a natural environment of outstanding quality and beauty with a great diversity of landscapes and habitats including upland moorland, coastal cliffs, sandy beaches, heathland, woodland, wetlands, river valleys, grasslands, sand dunes and estuaries. These habitats, together with the many parks and gardens, pockets of urban green space and large areas of farmland, support a huge diversity of plant and animal species and make Swansea one of the most attractive and ecologically diverse counties in the UK. SWANSEA WILDLIFE VOLUNTEERS Swansea's wildlife needs your help – could you be a force for nature and help Swansea Council look after wildlife on its local nature reserves and other green spaces? Whether it's practical conservation work, planting trees, helping with wildlife surveys or maintaining countryside footpaths, there is something of interest for everyone. GOWER HEDGEROW HUB Hedgerows have shaped the British countryside and are of huge historical, cultural and ecological significance. The RSPB states that “Hedges may support up to 80 per cent of our woodland birds, 50 per cent of our mammals and 30 per cent of our butterflies.” Gower Hedgerow Hub helps raise awareness of, celebrate, protect and manage these linear woodlands across Gower, offering volunteering opportunities, crafts, events and support to landowners. We're looking for Hedgerow Heroes – individuals and groups to join us in improving this incredibly important habitat, whilst also improving your own wellbeing through enjoyable activities in the outdoors. BIOAMRYWIAETH YN ABERTAWE Mae gan Abertawe amgylchedd naturiol o safon a harddwch eithriadol, gydag amrywiaeth eang o dirweddau a chynefinoedd, gan gynnwys gweundir uchel, clogwyni arfordirol, traethau tywodlyd, rhostir, coetir, gwlyptiroedd, dyffrynnoedd afonydd, glaswelltiroedd, twyni tywod a morydau.
