Makaton Communication Programme Facilitated by Wendy Gloster, Regional Makaton Tutor __________________________________________________________ What is Makaton and who uses it? The Makaton Vocabulary is a unique language programme that can provide a means of basic communication for both children and adults with a broad range of communication needs often associated with learning difficulties. These needs range from those at a very early stage of communication awareness and development to those with more independent communication. Signs and/or symbols are used to help clarify the meaning of the words spoken; this is because many of the signs and symbols are pictographic, whereas words on their own do not give a clue to their meaning. Makaton can provide a highly functional source of vocabulary for both children and adults with communication needs and their interactive partners and has a systematic multi-modal approach for the teaching of communication, language and literacy skills. What will be covered in the training? Participants will gain knowledge of Makaton, learn signs and symbols up to an appropriate level, and will be able to use Makaton within their work, or home setting.

e-Safety: Supporting Parents to Keep Children Safe Online Facilitated by Jon Trew, Children in Wales ___________________________________________________ This one day course aims to deliver a balanced, non-sensationalist approach to help professionals inform and support parents in protecting children when using the internet. Many parents today feel unable to protect their children online. They feel powerless when faced with technology they do not fully understand while their children seem completely at home with hitech, web enabled gadgets. How can people working with families help parents to better protect their children? With a constant flow of stories about online abuse in the media some parents may overreact restricting access to everything, while others just feel overwhelmed, keep their fingers crossed and hop it won’t happen to their child. Is there a safe way for children to use the internet’s opportunities for learning and fun, while also avoiding the risks? How can we help parents support their children’s safe use of modern technology? The course will look at some of the real risk and dangers and debate the concerns, while also dispelling some of the myths and hoaxes. There will be an opportunity for practitioners to discuss issues that parents are raising and to have some hands on experience at creating safe settings on some of the most popular devices used by children.
