Welcome / Croeso This season, Glynn Vivian Offsite is pleased to present a new series of exciting events, workshops and artist talks for January to April 2015.

Y tymor hwn mae'r Glynn Vivian yn falch o gyflwyno cyfres newydd o weithdai, sgyrsiau artist a digwyddiadau cyffrous o fis Ionawr tan fis Ebrill 2015.

In February we are delighted to be screening three nights of pop-up cinema at the YMCA. Time, a Hesitant Smile is curated by Jacqui Davies and Joseph Constable and is inspired by a programme of 25 artists' films produced for Random Acts on Channel 4.

Ym mis Chwefror, byddwn yn dangos tair noson o sinema teithiol yn y YMCA. Caiff Time, a Hesitant Smile ei churadu gan Jacqui Davies a Joseph Constable ac fe'i hysbrydolir gan raglen o ffilmiau gan 25 o artistiaid a gynhyrchwyd ar gyfer Random Acts ar Sianel 4.

Our community programmes continue at the YMCA and at venues in the city centre, offering free creative workshops for adults, children and families to take part.

Mae ein rhaglenni cymunedol yn parhau yn y YMCA ac mewn lleoliadau yng nghanol y ddinas, gan gynnig gweithdai creadigol am ddim i oedolion, plant a theuluoedd gymryd rhan ynddynt.

In addition we welcome two new Artists in Residence, Joan Jones and Jessica Hoad, to our studio space at the YMCA, offering our community an opportunity to engage with the artists and learn about their practice. The construction of the Gallery building is proceeding well, and soon our team will begin to prepare for moving back into the newly refurbished Gallery in autumn 2015. We will then reinstall the Gallery which will take some months and we look forward to preparing our exhibition displays and programmes for the relaunch in due course. We hope you will enjoy our activities this spring and thank you for your continuing support.

COLLECTIONS / CASGLIAD PARHAOL

Focus on the Collection Gwen John at National Museum, Cardiff In the new year, amongst other works from the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery collection, two wonderful paintings by Gwen John will be presented in the new displays at Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales: The Nun, c1910 and the painting illustrated here, Woman with a Coral Necklace, c1910-1920. Gwen John (1876-1939) was born in Haverfordwest, and brought up in Tenby with her brother, Augustus John (1878-1961). After studying at the Slade School of Art in London, Gwen went on to study at Whistler’s Academie Carmen in Paris, where she later returned to live, working in relative seclusion for most of her life. The Woman with a Coral Necklace was gifted to the Gallery by the Arts Council of Wales in 2002, and is one of a series of portraits of this young woman, painted with distilled simplicity at her studio. Along with The Nun, these are two remarkable paintings by one of Wales’ most highly acclaimed artists of the 20th Century.

Ffocws ar y Casgliad Gwen John yn Amgueddfa Genedlaethol, Caerdydd Yn y flwyddyn newydd, ymysg gweithiau eraill o gasgliad Oriel Gelf Glynn Vivian, ceir dau baentiad hyfryd gan Gwen John a fydd yn cael eu cyflwyno yn yr arddangosiadau newydd yn Amgueddfa Cymru: The Nun, o1910 a’r paentiad a ddarlunnir yma, Woman with a Coral Necklace, o1910-1920. Ganwyd Gwen John (1876-1939) yn Hwlffordd a’i magu yn Ninbych y Pysgod gyda’i brawd, Augustus John (1878-1961). Ar ôl astudio yn Ysgol Gelf Slade yn Llundain, aeth Gwen i astudio yn Academie Carmen Whistler ym Mharis, lle dychwelodd i fyw yn ddiweddarach, gan weithio’n feudwyaidd am y rhan fwyaf o’i bywyd. Rhoddwyd The Woman with a Coral Necklace i’r Oriel gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru yn 2002, ac mae’n un o gyfres o bortreadau o’r fenyw ifanc hon, a baentiwyd gyda symlrwydd distyll yn ei stiwdio. Ynghyd â The Nun, mae’r ddau baentiad anhygoel hyn gan un o artistiaid mwyaf nodedig Cymru o’r 20fed ganrif.

Joan Jones

Joan Jones

January - February

Ionawr - Chwefror

Joan has been working as an independent DIY cultural practitioner for over a decade. With roots based in the London queer punk scene (performing solo as Truly Kaput and in bands such as the Battys and Gender Fascist) Joan now works in a variety of mediums, including song, live performance and zine distribution. Joan's work is about turning embodied queer experience - often painful - into narratives or what they like to think of as ‘folk stories.’

Mae Joan wedi bod yn gweithio fel ymarferydd DIY diwylliannol annibynnol ers dros ddegawd. Gyda gwreiddiau yn sîn pync rhyfedd Llundain (gan berfformio'n unigol fel Truly Kaput ac mewn bandiau megis y Battys a'r Gender Facist) mae Joan bellach yn gweithio mewn amrywiaeth o gyfryngau, gan gynnwys caneuon, perfformiadau byw a dosbarthu cylchgronau. Mae gwaith Joan yn ymwneud â throi profiadau rhyfedd corfforol - rhai poenus yn aml yn hanesion, neu'n ‘straeon gwerin’ fel yr hoffent eu disgrifio.

As a genderqueer person and artist, Joan is currently exploring gender neutral pronouns such as 'their' and 'them' in reference to themselves.

Fel person ac artist genderqueer, mae Joan ar hyn o bryd yn archwilio rhagenwau niwtral o ran rhyw megis 'eu' a 'nhw' gan gyfeirio at eu hunain.
