Y tymor hwn rydym yn edrych ymlaen at ein harddangosfeydd, ein casgliadau a’n rhaglenni dysgu, yn ogystal â dathlu ein pen-blwydd cyntaf ar ddydd Sul 15 Hydref gyda gweithgareddau i bawb. Mae mis Medi’n dechrau gyda dangosiad cyntaf Cymru o arddangosfa Helen Sear, sef ...mwg yw’r gweddill. Wedi’i chomisiynu ar gyfer Cymru yn Fenis 2015, Helen yw un o artistiaid mwyaf clodwiw Cymru. Hefyd yn cychwyn ym mis Medi bydd Gwobr Artist Ifanc Syr Leslie Joseph 2017. Enillydd eleni yw Bob Gelsthorpe gyda’i arddangosfa, Wrth iddo aros, nes iddo bara. Ym mis Rhagfyr, bydd ein digwyddiad ‘Abertawe Agored’ hynod boblogaidd yn dychwelyd, gan roi cyfle i artistiaid sy’n byw yn Abertawe ddod ynghyd i arddangos eu gwaith yn yr oriel. Mae ein harddangosfeydd o gasgliadau'n parhau gyda Chyfres Artistiaid yr Ugeinfed Ganrif sy’n rhoi ffocws ar gysylltiadau Abertawe â Swrrealaeth, gan gynnwys Teulu’r Arlunydd, 1926 gan Giorgio de Chirico sydd ar fenthyg drwy garedigrwydd Oriel Tate. Ddiwedd mis Medi bydd Abertawe’n cyflwyno’i chais terfynol i fod yn Ddinas Diwylliant y DU 2021 a bydd y ddinas lwyddiannus yn cael ei chyhoeddi ym mis Rhagfyr. Byddai ennill y statws hwn yn gyfle gwych i Abertawe. Ewch i www.swansea2021. co.uk/cy i weld sut gallwch chi helpu i gefnogi’r cais.

This season we are looking forward to our exhibitions, collections and learning programmes, and to celebrating our first birthday on Sunday 15 October with activities for everyone. September begins with the first showing in Wales of Helen Sear’s exhibition …the rest is smoke. Commissioned for Cymru yn Fenis/ Wales in Venice 2015, Helen is one of Wales’s most acclaimed artists. Also opening in September is the Sir Leslie Joseph Young Artist Award 2017. This year’s recipient is Bob Gelsthorpe with his exhibition, As it waits, until it lasts. In December, we welcome back our hugely popular ‘Swansea Open’, when artists living in Swansea come together to display their work at the Gallery. Our collection displays continue with our Twentieth Century Artist Series focusing on Swansea’s connections with Surrealism, including The Painter’s Family, 1926 by Giorgio de Chirico, generously on loan from Tate. Swansea submits its final bid for UK City of Culture 2021 at the end of September and the successful city will be announced in December. Achieving this status would be a fantastic opportunity for Swansea. Please visit www.swansea2021.co.uk to see how you can help support the Bid.

Mae Helen Sear yn un o artistiaid mwyaf clodwiw Cymru. Yn ei gwaith, symudir yn ddi-dor rhwng syniadau estynedig o ffotograffiaeth, cerfluniaeth a fideo. Yr arddangosfa hon yw'r cyflwyniad cyntaf o'r gwaith hwn yn y DU a gomisiynwyd yn wreiddiol ar gyfer Cymru yn Fenis 2015. Mae’r gwaith yn seiliedig ar Gymru wledig, sef amgylchedd lleol Sear. Mae ei gwaith yn archwilio syniadau o farwoldeb a byrhoedledd drwy gyfres o ddelweddau lle gwelir bod tirweddau amaethyddol ar gyfer cynhyrchu a’u defnyddio yn bodoli fel mannau hudol ar yr un pryd, gan greu argraff ar gorff a meddwl y gwyliwr. Mae ffotograffau a fideos Sear yn archwilio’r ddelwedd fel cerflun, lle mae’r artist yn cyfuno gwahanol gyflymderau o edrych, gan gyferbynnu gwahanol gyflymderau o edrych, graddfeydd ffisegol, lliwiau a phresenoldeb materol byw. Curadwyd yr arddangosfa ...mwy yw'r gweddill gan Stuart Cameron ar ran Ffotogallery ac fe’i comisiynwyd gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru. Bydd yr arddangosfa’n teithio i Crescent Arts, Scarborough, Oriel Impressions, Tˆy Bradford a Hestercombe, Gwlad yr Haf yn 2018.

Helen Sear is one of Wales’ most acclaimed artists, her work moves seamlessly between expanded notions of photography, sculpture and video. This exhibition is the first UK presentation of the work commissioned for Cymru yn Fenis/ Wales in Venice 2015. The work is rooted in Sear’s local environment of rural Wales. Ideas of mortality and temporality are explored through a series of works in which agricultural landscapes marked for production and consumption are seen to exist simultaneously as magical spaces, imprinting themselves on the body and mind of the viewer. Sear’s photographic and video works explore the image as sculptural form whereby the artist integrates different speeds of looking, contrasting physical scale, colour and vivid material presence. The exhibition …the rest is smoke was curated by Stuart Cameron on behalf of Ffotogallery and commissioned by the Arts Council of Wales. This exhibition will tour to Crescent Arts, Scarborough, Impressions Gallery, Bradford and Hestercombe House, Somerset in 2018.

Cyfres Artistiaid yr Ugeinfed Ganrif Swrrealaeth ac Abertawe Twentieth Century Artists Series Surrealism and Swansea 01.08.17 – 21.01.18

Lleoliad/Location

Ystafell/Room 8 Roedd Giorgio De Chirico (1888-1978) yn ysbrydoliaeth fawr i’r mudiad Swrrealaeth yr oedd André Breton (1896-1966) yn ei ystyried yn chwyldroadol am ei allu i ryddhau mynegiant y meddwl anymwybodol gydag egwyddorion gwleidyddol, gwrth-gyfalafol newydd. Mae Teulu’r Arlunydd, 1926, ar fenthyg drwy garedigrwydd Oriel Tate, ac mae’n canolbwyntio ar y dylanwad mawr a gafodd De Chirico yn y 1920au a’r 1930au, nid yn unig ym Mharis ond hefyd yn Llundain, gan gysylltu â llawer o’r artistiaid yng nghasgliad y Glynn Vivian heddiw Helpodd Paul Nash (1889-1946) i drefnu’r Arddangosfa Swrrealaidd Ryngwladol hollbwysig ym 1936 a oedd yn cynnwys gwaith De Chirico, yn ogystal â’r arddangosfa Uned Un a fu’n teithio’r DU, gan ymddangos yn y Glynn Vivian ym mis Ionawr 1935, ynghyd â’r artistiaid Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Henry Moore a Tristram Hillier, ymhlith eraill. Roedd Ceri Richards o Abertawe yn gwbl ymwybodol yn y 1930au o'r datblygiadau cyffrous yn haniaeth fodernaidd a swrrealaeth ac, yn ddiweddarach, cafwyd atsain fwy uniongyrchol o ddylanwad De Chirico yng ngwaith Felicity Charlton.

Giorgio De Chirico (1888-1978) was a great inspiration to the surrealist movement which André Breton (1896-1966) regarded as revolutionary, freeing the expression of the unconscious mind, with new political, anti-capitalist ideals. The Painter’s Family, 1926, is generously on loan from Tate, and focuses on the great influence which De Chirico had in the 1920s and 1930s, not only in Paris but also in London, connecting with many artists in the Glynn Vivian collection today. Paul Nash (1889-1946) helped organise the important International Surrealist Exhibition of 1936 in which De Chirico’s work was included, as well as the Unit One exhibition which toured the UK, showing at the Glynn Vivian in January 1935, with fellow artists Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Henry Moore and Tristram Hillier, amongst others. Swansea’s Ceri Richards was intensely aware in the 1930s of the exciting developments in modernist abstraction and surrealism, and later Felicity Charlton echoed more directly the influences of De Chirico in her work.
