Welcome to the brochure of the Gower Walking Festival 2009, the 5th such festival organised by Mumbles Tourist Information Centre. We hope that you do more than just look at the brochure and take the plunge and arrange to take part in several of the walks. If you live away from this beautiful part of the UK, then please do come to visit during the festival weeks of 6th June until 21st June and discover for yourself some of the reasons visitors return time and time again to Gower, Mumbles and Swansea.
INTRO
Many will know that the Gower Peninsula is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and that it was the first area to be given that status in 1956, and that the term ‘Outstanding’ is fully justified. For not only do we have rolling countryside but also pleasant hills, wild moorland and stunning sandy beaches to enjoy during your visit. This year we have assembled over 45 walks with distances ranging from
1 to 30 miles in length, each with its own special theme or activity to make the walk even more interesting. From history to literature and even special activity walks have been arranged with particular appeal to the whole family. These include an introduction to Bushcraft, Horse Riding, Canoeing and for the very adventurous, Coasteering! Most walks are circular but a few are one-way. These are headed “A Round Gower Walk” and give

walkers the opportunity to walk a large part of the coastal path in stages. Certificates will be issued to those who complete all these stages during the festival. Many of the walks have been arranged to coincide with local transport wherever possible, and up-to-date timetables can be viewed online at: www.baytrans.org.uk. An experienced walker who has their own particular interest and theme will lead each of the guided walks. All walks are graded so that walkers can choose those that suit their capabilities. History is all around us in Gower. The Peninsula has been safeguarded from unwanted late-twentieth century development, and the heritage of this unique landscape has been preserved. From prehistoric sites to Norman castles, early Christian and medieval settlements to the industrial era, there is a rich variety to be seen. In addition, walks also include such topics as geology, archaeology, flora and fauna and

the marine environment, and land management. We do hope that you will be able to join us on a number of the walks during the Festival, but remember that all walks need to be booked in advance through the organisers, Mumbles Tourist Information Centre. If you are new to walking or to Gower, you can be sure that you will find good company, enjoy wonderful scenery, and learn a little more about the area, and with some exhilarating exercise thrown in.
All walks (with the exception of the Gower Gallop) need to be booked via the Mumbles TIC, and a nominal booking fee of £3.00 per head per walk is charged. Mumbles TIC is a volunteer-led, not-forprofit organisation and the proceeds of the Walking Festival ensure that the TIC remains open during off-peak periods. We are grateful for your support. Please Note: Mumbles Tourist Association trading as Mumbles Tourist Information Centre acts as a facilitator in producing a programme of walks for the Walking Festival. MTA does not accept responsibility for walkers’ safety or personal property while taking part in the Walking Festival. Walk leaders are for the most part private individuals who are sharing the walk with walkers but will be familiar with the routes to be followed. Walkers must assess their own ability to tackle the routes from the information available to them and would be advised to arrange their own personal insurance to cover any risks.
The following organisations have kindly agreed to participate in this year’s Festival: City and County of Swansea, the National Trust, the Glamorgan Gwent Archaeological Trust, the Mumbles Development Trust, Gower Heritage Centre, Dryad Bushcraft, Breakout Adventure, Parc-le-Breos Pony Trekking Centre, the Ramblers Association, the Countyrside Council for Wales, John Davies of BayTrans, Gower Coast Adventures and Mawr Walking Club and members of the Gower Society. We are also grateful to the walk leaders for their energy and enthusiasm in making the Walking Festival a success.
