Jenni Spencer-Davies Curadur/Curator

We are delighted to announce the Gallery has now re-opened following our redevelopment to improve access and conserve the original 1911 building for the 21st century. Our opening exhibitions and collection displays include art from Wales and worldwide. Out of Darkness brings together artists whose work has been presented here in the past, with Marcel Duchamp (France/USA), Cerith Wyn Evans (Wales), Mark Wallinger (England), Oscar Muñoz (Latin America), William Kentridge (South Africa) and Yingmei Duan (China), in a contemporary overview of local-global culture today. Journeys between Art and Life tells the story of Richard Glynn Vivian’s Swansea roots, his travels around the world and his lifetime of generosity, including (until end November) a wonderful painting on loan from Tate by J.M.W. Turner, Snow Storm – Steamboat off a Harbour’s Mouth, 1842. Journeys and Visions presents work with a focus on studio based practice in the 20th century and includes The Artist’s Studio by Pablo Picasso, also on loan from Tate. The Atrium installation by Lindsay Seers, Nowhere Less Now 7, supported by Artangel, brings together the artist’s poetic journeys around the world in films presented in a stranded boat. We are also privileged to be able to present Leonardo da Vinci: Ten Drawings from the Royal Collection, offering a rare insight into the work of one of the world’s greatest artists. We hope you will come and enjoy the new Gallery!

Lindsay Seers Nowhere Less Now7 15.10.2016 – 19.03.2017

Lleoliad/Location

Atriwm/Atrium Wedi’i gosod mewn llong sy’n symud trwy’r gorffennol, y presennol a’r dyfodol, mae Nowhere Less Now 7, yn dilyn ôl traed perthynas a fu’n hwylio dros y moroedd yn y Llynges Frenhinol dros gan mlynedd yn ôl. Wedi iddi ddarganfod ei arysgrif ar goeden hynafol baobab ar yr ynys Affricanaidd, Sansibar, mae Lindsay Seers yn cysylltu straeon personol unigolion a gafodd eu llusgo gan gerhyntau cryfion byd-eang. Mae’r fersiwn hon o’r gwaith sy’n datblygu’n barhaus, yn plethu stori’r oriel ei hunan ag un ei sylfaenydd, Richard Glynn Vivian, a hanes morol Abertawe. Mae Nowhere Less Now 7 yn rhan o’r Casgliad Artangel, menter i ddod â gwaith ffilm a fideo neilltuol, sydd wedi ei gomisiynu a’i gynhyrchu gan Artangel, i orielau ac amgueddfeydd ar draws y DU. Mae’r Casgliad Artangel wedi cael ei ddatblygu mewn partneriaeth â Tate ac fe’i cefnogir yn hael gan Ymddiriedolaeth Esmeé Fairbairn a Sefydliad Foyle, ac mae’n defnyddio cyllid cyhoeddus gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Lloegr.

Set in a ship that moves through time past, present and future, Nowhere Less Now 7 traces the journey of a relative who sailed the seas in the Royal Navy over a hundred years ago. Finding his inscription on an ancient baobab tree on the African island of Zanzibar, Lindsay Seers connects intimate stories of individuals dragged along in the strong currents of global histories. This is a new incarnation of the continuously evolving work interwoven with some of the Gallery’s own story through its founder Richard Glynn Vivian and Swansea’s own maritime past. Nowhere Less Now 7 is part of The Artangel Collection, an initiative to bring outstanding film and video works, commissioned and produced by Artangel, to galleries and museums across the UK. The Artangel Collection has been developed in partnership with Tate, generously supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and The Foyle Foundation with public funding from Arts Council England.

Leonardo da Vinci Ten drawings from the Royal Collection 15.10.2016 – 08.01.2017

Lleoliad / Location

Ystafell/Room 9

Mae deg o’r lluniau gorau gan Leonardo da Vinci yn y Casgliad Brenhinol yn cael eu harddangos mewn arddangosfa newydd. Mae’r gweithiau wedi cael eu dewis i ddangos cwmpas arbennig diddordebau’r artist, o baentio a cherflunio i beirianneg, söoleg, botaneg, llunio mapiau ac anatomeg, yn ogystal â’i ddefnydd o gyfryngau gwahanol - pen ac inc, sialciau du a choch, dyfrlliwiau a phwyntilau metel. Drwy dynnu lluniau, roedd Leonardo yn ceisio cofnodi a deall y byd o’i gwmpas. Lluniau Leonardo yw’r rhai cyfoethocaf, mwyaf amrywiol, mwyaf technegol ddisglair a mwyaf bythol ddiddorol.

Ten of the finest drawings by Leonardo da Vinci from the Royal Collection are on display in a new exhibition. The works have been selected to show the extraordinary scope of the artist’s interests, from painting and sculpture to engineering, zoology, botany, map-making and anatomy, as well as his use of different media – pen and ink, red and black chalks, watercolour and metalpoint. Through drawing, Leonardo attempted to record and understand the world around him. Leonardo’s drawings are rich, wide-ranging, technically brilliant, and endlessly fascinating.

Gadawodd Glynn ei gasgliad celf cyfan ‘er mwynhad pobl Abertawe’ ym 1908, ac agorodd yr oriel ym 1911, flwyddyn ar ôl ei farwolaeth. Teithiodd y byd ar agerlongau a threnau, gan gaffael gwaith celf gain a chelf gymhwysol o’r 18fed ganrif a chyfnodau cynharach. Richard Glynn Vivian was the original founder of our gallery in Swansea. Born at Singleton Abbey, Glynn was the fourth son of the wealthy Vivian family, owners of the largest copper smelting plant in the 19th century. He left his entire art collection for ‘the enjoyment of the people of Swansea’ in 1908, and the Gallery opened in 1911, a year after he died. He travelled the world by steamship and train, acquiring fine art and applied arts from the 18th century and earlier periods. Journeys between Art & Life presents his collection and celebrates his legacy for the first time in over 100 years. The exhibition includes Snow Storm - Steam-Boat off a Harbour’s Mouth, exhibited 1842, by J.M.W Turner’s (1775-1851) generously on loan from Tate until the end of November 2016. The Richard Glynn Vivian displays are accompanied by a new digital multimedia guide at the Gallery. Or you can download the App for free, available on iTunes and Google Play. The project is generously supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Art and poetry are often made in solitude. In the 20th century artists’ studios were at the heart of their practice, a special place where they could share their visions and ideas with the world. This collection display includes work by David Jones, Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Gwen John, Mark Gertler, Brenda Chamberlain, Ceri Richards and The Studio by Pablo Picasso, generously on loan from Tate. Leonardo da Vinci drew not only to prepare his paintings, but also to plan his sculptures, devise grand architectural schemes, invent new machines, and to study the world around him. Leonardo’s pioneering investigations of the natural world were equal to his artistic achievements. He used metalpoint, pen, chalks and watercolour to capture his observations and the workings of his imagination in a manner that no other artist or scientist has ever attempted.

Ystafell/Room 1 Etifeddodd Glynn Vivian gyfoeth aruthrol o fusnes gweithgynhyrchu copr ei deulu yn Abertawe. Dengys ymchwil ddiweddar y bu ei fywyd yn un llawn cynnwrf, teithio byd-eang a chasglu brwd. Yn ystod ei flynyddoedd olaf, ac yntau wedi colli ei olwg, newidiodd ei fywyd i un a oedd yn canolbwyntio ar grefydd a dyngarwch. Rhoddodd ei gasgliad amrywiol o baentiadau, darluniau, cerameg, pethau cain a gwrthrychau a chyfraniad ariannol i adeiladu Oriel Gelf Glynn Vivian ‘er mwynhad trigolion pobl Abertawe’

Glynn Vivian inherited immense wealth from his family’s copper manufacturing in Swansea. Recent research reveals that he led a life of restless, world-wide travel and obsessive collecting. In his last years, having lost his sight, his thoughts turned to religion and philanthropy and he donated his eclectic collection of paintings, drawings, ceramics and objets d’art and funding to build the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery ‘for the enjoyment of the people of Swansea’.
