Jenni Spencer-Davies Curadur/Curator

We are all delighted that the Glynn Vivian doors are open again, and hope you will enjoy the new season ahead, continuing with Glenys Cour: The Colour of Saying, curated by Mel Gooding, which has been warmly received by visitors to the gallery. We will be keeping up our focus on Swansea in a local-global context, and are looking forward next to presenting, The Moon and a Smile, a response by eminent contemporary women photographic artists to our city’s pioneering role in early 19th century photography. The recipient of this year’s Wakelin Award is ceramic artist, Philip Eglin whose work has been selected to join the Gallery’s collection by Andrew Renton, Keeper of Art at Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales. Phil has earned an international reputation working with clay, and responds to historical influences drawn from 16th century painting, English medieval pottery and the flatbacked figurative ornaments of Staffordshire. Our Learning programmes will also be continuing with workshops, gallery talks, events and activities relating to our programme to appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds in our communities. We hope that you will enjoy our new café, Coast, and that our partnership with Mission Gallery craft shop will continue to be popular in reflecting our key values to support art and artists so that we can connect our communities through the arts. With our warmest thanks and good wishes for 2017 to all our participants and supporters.

Mae Y Lleuad a Gwên yn ymateb i gyfnod yn y 1840au a’r 1850au pan roedd Abertawe yng nghanol arbrofion cynnar ffotograffiaeth ar draws y byd. Yn arbennig, roedd cylch y teulu Dillwyn yn gynhyrchiol iawn wrth ddatblygu ffotograffiaeth, yn enwedig Mary Dillwyn, John Dillwyn Llewellyn a’i ferch Thereza. Wedi’u comisiynu gan Glynn Vivian, mae naw artistiaid rhyngwladol wedi creu gwaith newydd ar gyfer yr arddangosfa. Yn ogystal, bydd arddangosfa o ffotograffiaeth y 19eg ganrif.

The Moon and a Smile responds to a period in the 1840s and 1850s, when Swansea was at the centre of early experiments in photography worldwide. In particular, the Dillwyn family circle was prolific in the development of photography, especially Mary Dillwyn, John Dillwyn Llewellyn and his daughter Thereza. Commissioned by Glynn Vivian, the nine international artists have created new work for the exhibition. Alongside there will be a display of 19th century photography.

Ystafell/Room 1 Mae’n bosib mai Vivian and Sons oedd cwmni mwyaf adnabyddus Abertawe yn y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg. Roedd yn cyfleu i’r dim sut daeth y dref yn enwog am fod yn ganolfan gopr fyd-eang. Mae’r sgwrs hon yn ystyried yr hyn a oedd y tu ôl i ddelwedd lwyddiannus y cwmni, a’r anawsterau a wynebwyd gan y teulu Vivian wrth iddynt weithio i sefydlu eu busnes mwyndoddi copr yn yr Hafod. Gan ddefnyddio tystiolaeth o ohebiaeth eang y teulu Vivan a gedwir yn Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru, archwilir eu hymdrechion i greu copr o ansawdd uchel ac adeiladu sylfaen gwsmeriaid sylweddol ar gyfer eu cynnyrch ynghyd â’u perthynas a phrif gwmnïau copr eraill Abertawe.

Vivian and Sons is perhaps Swansea’s best known nineteenth-century copper firm. They epitomised the town’s rise to fame as a centre of the global copper trade. This talk looks behind their successful image at some of the challenges and difficulties faced by the Vivians as they worked to establish their copper smelting business at Hafod. Drawing on evidence from the extensive Vivian correspondence held at the National Library of Wales, their efforts to produce high quality copper and to build up a substantial customer base for their products will be explored alongside their relationships with Swansea’s other leading copper firms.

Ystafell/Room 1 Roedd y Fictoriaid yn ystyried mai’r golwg oedd y synnwyr pennaf ac yn meddwl bod ei golli’n peri cryn anabledd. O ddiwedd y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg, roedd sefydliadau elusennol yn darparu addysg a hyfforddiant i blant dall. Roedd dyngarwyr cefnog megis Richard Glynn Vivian yn cefnogi elusennau i’r deillion, ond, o ganol y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg, roedd pobl ddall yn gynyddol feirniadol o elusen a’r agwedd o dosturi a oedd yn sail iddi. Mae’r sgwrs hon yn archwilio’r dadleuon hyn a’u perthnasedd i weithrediaeth anabledd heddiw. Dirywiodd golwg Glynn Vivian yn nes ymlaen yn ei fywyd, ac mae’r sgwrs hefyd yn archwilio profiadau pobl â nam ar y golwg.

The Victorians viewed sight as the ‘sovereign’ of the senses and considered its loss highly disabling. From the late eighteenth century onwards charitable institutions provided education and training for blind children. Wealthy philanthropists such as Richard Glynn Vivian supported blind people’s charities, but from the middle of the nineteenth century blind people became increasingly critical of charity and the attitudes of pity that underpinned it. This talk explores these arguments and their relevance to disability activism today. Glynn Vivian’s own sight declined in later life, and the talk also examines the experiences of people with visual impairments.

Yn ystod ei hoes, creodd Vera Bassett (1912 - 1997) lwyfan rhyngwladol ar gyfer ei gwaith ac arddangoswyd ei gwaith mewn mannau daearyddol hynod amrywiol - yn Abertawe yn Oriel Glynn Vivian; y Mwmbwls a Massachusetts; Efrog Newydd a Newcastle-upon-Tyne; Pontarddulais a Pharis. Roedd beirniaid cyfoes ym Mhrydain a Ffrainc yn hael eu clod o’i gwaith. Y llyfr hwn fydd y cyntaf i’w ysgrifennu amdani a chaiff ei ddarlunio’n llawn gyda lluniau o’i chynnyrch artistig amrywiol.

During her lifetime Vera Bassett (1912 - 1997) achieved an international platform for her work and had exhibitions in places of astounding geographically diversity - in Swansea in the Glynn Vivian; Mumbles and Massachusetts; New York and Newcastle-upon-Tyne; Pontarddulais and Paris. Contemporary critics both in Britain and France were lavish in their praise of her work. This book will be first to be written about her and will be fully illustrated with images of her varied artistic output.
