Knelston Primary School – School Prospectus
Headteacher`s Letter of Introduction Dear Parents/Carers, We are pleased to welcome you and your child to Knelston Primary School and hope that the years spent here will be happy and successful. The information in this prospectus is intended to help introduce you and your child to the school. Every year we have many visitors to the school and frequently unsolicited comments are passed on the high quality of the learning environment and relationships within the school. The school is justifiably proud of its reputation for concern for the individual child, both in terms of welfare and educational provision. We work on the premise that every child is entitled to the highest quality educational experience that can be provided. We deliver a well researched and organised curriculum with experienced staff trained to a high level. In addition to gaining literacy, numeracy, scientific, physical, artistic and technological skills, your child will build confidence, develop self reliance, learn to make decisions and develop the ability to articulate feelings and ideas. We also attach great importance to the development of pupils` social skills and seek to enable them to build relationships with other children and adults and be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others. We are an `emotionally literate` school: we give careful consideration to teaching pupils how to recognise, identify and handle the many emotions that they experience. We believe this helps us to get along with each other and creates community members that are tolerant of each other. As parents, there are a number of things you can do to help: • Do reassure your children about school; talk to them about their teacher, the activities they are doing, the friends they are making and the happy time they will have; • Keep us informed of any significant details relating to your child`s education. Tell us of any allergies, major health problems, or personal circumstances, which might be significant. This information will be regarded as confidential and will help us to care all the more effectively for your child. • Do not hesitate to come and see us if there is a matter you wish to discuss or any anxiety you wish to share. Remember, however, that some things are better discussed away from your children, at a time when the teacher is free to talk to you. You may be certain that we will do our best to ensure that your child will never fail. The staff are highly skilled at assessing pupils` individual level of development and then supporting them in moving, at their own pace, towards their full potential. We work hard to ensure that all children feel good about themselves and acquire a high level of self esteem. We believe that if you feel successful, you will be successful. We wish your child a happy introduction to the school and successful progress through his/her time with us. We strongly believe that your involvement in this process is crucial and we will provide frequent opportunities to keep you informed about the ways in which we are working with your child. We are keen to have parental involvement at all levels and if you have any spare time to come into the school and work with us, we will be very pleased to accommodate you. We already have an excellent team of volunteers who make a significant contribution to the success of the school, as well as an active Friends of Knelston Association. However, there is always room for more helpers! You will be made very welcome.
Yours sincerely Mr. Roy Davies Headteacher

Parents and Home School Agreement. We feel strongly that the responsibility for the education and general development of the children should be shared by both school and home. With an understanding of each others role and cooperation between parents and teachers, the children have a tremendous advantage. A close link between home and school, a partnership is therefore vital. With this in mind, a dialogue with all relevant parties was undertaken in order that a Home School Agreement would be produced. Parents & pupils are invited to adopt the principles and to show their commitment by signing a copy of the agreement. The Headteacher signs the copy on behalf of the school.(Copy Appendix A) We try in various ways to keep you informed of your child`s progress. Teachers frequently make time for consultation with parents. School reports are issued annually and there are Parents` Evenings during the Autumn & Summer Terms. Regular school newsletters as well as the school website keep you informed about what is going on. Parents, as well as other family members and friends are encouraged to come to school and help, in whatever capacity they feel comfortable. People in the community have many skills and talents which they can share with us – cookery, art & craft, listening to children read, ancillary tasks, sport. If there is any way in which you feel that you can help, please see either the Headteacher or any other teacher. When pupils see their parents showing an interest by helping in the school there is an enormous benefit to their attitude, effort and attainment. The importance of parental interest and involvement cannot be over stressed. It does pay dividends. Speak to some of our helpers and hear what they have to say.
feel at ease, can work to reach their full potential and can gain maximum benefit from their schooling. There is an active Friends of Knelston Association that organises a regular programme of social, educational and fund raising events. Regular contact is kept through newsletters. Please make every effort to support the Friends termly meetings – the activities are for the benefit of every child and all help will be welcomed.
Care for your Child. The school has a policy regarding `Behaviour, Discipline and Bullying` that can be viewed on request. The policy has been created in the interests of ensuring a safe, secure environment for all pupils. Parents can do much to ensure that children grow up with a positive framework of values – even though this sometimes is not easy. There are many places that can offer support – us as a school, your G.P., other parents and even the internet e.g. www.e-parents.org.uk
Good standards of behaviour are expected from all children. We encourage them to adopt a caring attitude towards one another and to treat everyone involved in school with courtesy. The class teacher normally deals with any behavioural problems in the first instance, but in cases of serious or persistent bad behaviour children will be referred to the Deputy Headteacher or Headteacher. We run a `Traffic Light System` for behaviour. Punishment will usually take the form of withdrawal of privileges ( e.g. Golden Time)
The development of a close relationship between school and home demands more than close interest. It also needs the right mixture of space and trust. An appreciation of, and confidence in, each other`s role makes the school a purposeful and happy place where children

Knelston Primary School – School Prospectus Any serious concerns will, as a matter of course, be brought to your attention and we may require you to attend school to discuss your child`s behaviour. We expect your support in working together to correct poor behaviour should it arise, as this often helps to `nip it in the bud`
Our behaviour policy (available on written request) encourages children to choose positive actions. Positive behaviour means that pupils are recognised for their efforts (Knelston Praise Wall) and given increasing responsibility.
There are high expectations of staff and of
but parents have a profound impact on whether these expectations are met.
pupils,
Please give your child support in their daily school life: • If children arrive on time, suitably dressed for the weather, with any letters, or absence notes and with their homework then the day should immediately get off to a good start. • At the end of the day we hope that pupils are collected on time, homework is done where your time allows. • In general please show an interest in their school life, please attend meetings when you can and look through work when it is brought home. • Finally, never let a problem persist. Even if you only suspect a problem, get in touch with us immediately. We make time for concerned parents. Every school has a set of rules designed to make the day run smoothly and happily as possible. We ask that the following specific rules are supported and encouraged by all parents/carers so that discipline is maintained. Our school rules are: 1. We always try to be polite, kind and helpful. 2. We always try to keep our school clean and tidy. 3. We always try to walk quietly within the school building. 4. We always try to be good listeners. 5. We always try to remember that assembly is our special time of worship together. 6. We always try to respect other people`s feelings and property. 7. We always try our best with our work and try to complete it in the given time. Wherever we are, whatever we are doing, we always try to remember that we are proud to be pupils of Knelston Primary School.
A child who misbehaves is given a choice of changing his/her behaviour or accepting clear sanctions. If an initial verbal warning does not work then parents will be informed and asked to help. Both school and home should work together to help the child find a way forward. Any behaviour which places other children at risk will lead to temporary exclusion until assurance is given that matters will improve. Bullying of any kind has zero tolerance here. Each week the school holds a special assembly where we celebrate together. This may be in the form of whole school successes (e.g. fund raising for charity) or group successes (e.g. sporting achievements) or individual success (e.g. improvement in behaviour, kindness, outstanding work or effort). This is an opportunity for the whole school community to reflect upon the many successes that are achieved and to reinforce our aim that positive issues will be acknowledged and rewarded. Praise Wall Bricks are issued to children in recognition of extra effort. This could be issued for: • A particularly good piece of work. • A kind deed. • Making an effort to improve. • Sustained effort.

Term Dates and Session Times For details of the Term Dates please see Appendix D. Children are asked to be on school premises no earlier than 8.40.a.m. (unless attending Breakfast Club). Supervision will be from 8.40 a.m. We impress upon children the importance of punctuality and ask parents to support us by ensuring that their child is in school at an appropriate time; your child`s learning is disrupted if they are late and other children`s learning is disrupted by latecomers disturbing the class. After any absence, a letter of explanation must be sent to the school: this is a requirement under the 1991 Pupil Attendance regulations. If we do not receive such formal notification, we are obliged to record an `unauthorised absence` and this would not reflect well on the school. We are very proud of our outstanding attendance record, and this is thanks to the cooperation of parents. When parents wish to withdraw their children during the school day in order to keep an appointment with a doctor, dentist, etc. a written request in advance would be appreciated. Children will not be allowed to leave school unaccompanied during the school day. It would also be helpful for security/safety reasons if you could inform the school on the first day of absence if your child is ill. In this way we can be sure of the child`s whereabouts.
Session Times: Morning Nursery: 9.15a.m. – 11.45a.m. Infant Department:
9.15a.m. – 3.30p.m.
Junior Department:

Keeping Informed. 1. A letter or telephone call will normally secure an early appointment with the Headteacher. Whilst every effort will be made to see parents arriving unexpectedly there will be occasions when this is not possible. 2. An appointment can usually be made to see your child`s teacher at the beginning or end of the school day. 3. Information letters are sent regularly (School Calendar of Events at beginning of year) to parents, both on behalf of the school and the Friends of Knelston School – its worth checking your child`s school bag on a regular basis. We are also developing our school web site. 4. We would hope that if there were any issues about which you felt unhappy or concerned, you would discuss these first with your child`s class teacher, or with the Headteacher, when we will do our utmost it resolve the matter. However if you have a complaint under section 23 of the Education Reform Act (Relating to the Curriculum, Religious Education or Religious Worship) the LEA has a prepared a formal complaints procedure, a copy of which is available at school, the Education Department, or Public Library. Further Advice may be obtained from: County Education Department, Schools and Awards Section County hall, (Tel.No. 01792 636000)

Transport Children in full-time schooling, who live more than three miles from school and within the catchment area are entitled to free school transport and are issued with a bus pass by the L.E.A. In order to reduce congestion at the school, we have also negotiated for children living at Scurlage and Reynoldston also to be able to use transport. Details of pick-up/ drop-off times are available from the school secretary. A bus steward supervises children travelling on these buses. The bus steward will not allow children to get off the bus if there is no adult to meet them, unless notified of this arrangement. Parents who bring their children to school and/or collect them are asked to observe the Highway Code in relation to the yellow zigzag lines outside the school. These are mandatory requirements and are implemented for the safety of our children. For the same reason, we also ask parents NOT to use the area in front of the school gates for turning.
Uniform Parents have agreed that they would prefer a school uniform. Pupils who attend Knelston Primary School should be proud to belong to the school and should wish to be identified with us by wearing our distinctive school uniform. The uniform list is kept as brief as possible and with as much variation as is reasonable, so as to avoid undue expenditure on the part of the parents. It is essential to help your child that you label his/her clothing clearly.
Charging Policy; 1988 Ed. Reform Act. The 1988 Education Reform Act makes it unlawful to charge for any activity (other than instrumental music provision) that takes part wholly or largely during school hours. The legislation permits voluntary contributions but makes it unlawful for Governors to discriminate between pupils on the basis of the voluntary contribution, or lack of it. Under section 10 of the Act, the Governing Body has determined that parents be invited to make voluntary contributions towards the benefit of the school or to support particular activities, e.g. educational visits, in order to offset costs and entrance fees. Educational visits/activities covering all aspects of the curriculum are organised to take place largely during school hours and involve all pupils. However each visit/event is dependent upon our ability to attract voluntary contributions to fund such projects. No child will be excluded from such activities simply on the basis of non-contribution but at the same time, cancellation of visits may result from lack of funding.
Equal Opportunities Knelston Primary School is committed to the provision of equal opportunities for all, irrespective of creed, colour, race, religion or gender. A copy of the Equal Opportunities Policy is available for viewing, on request.

At Knelston Primary School, The Foundation Phase curriculum is planned as a progressive framework that spans four years (3-7 Years) to meet the needs of all children, including those who are at an earlier stage of development and those who are more able. Children learn through first-hand experiential activities with the serious business of `play` providing the vehicle. Through their play, children practice and consolidate their learning, playing with ideas, experiment, take risks, solve problems and make decisions individually, in small and large groups. First – hand experiences allow children to develop and understanding of themselves and the world in which they live. The development of children` self – image and feelings of self worth and self esteem are at the core of this phase. We use the indoor and outdoor environments that are fun, exciting, stimulating and safe promote children`s development and natural curiosity to explore and learn through first-hand experiences. The Foundation Phase environment should promote discovery and independence and a greater emphasis on using the outdoor environment as a resource for children`s learning.
15
Seven Areas of learning These are: • Personal and Social development, Well-being and Cultural Diversity. • Language, Literacy and Communication Skills. • Mathematical Development. • Welsh Language Development. • Knowledge and Understanding of the World. • Physical Development. • Creative Development.
At Knelston we aim to make entry into school as smooth and as pleasant as possible. We believe this is made easier if we have positive contact with parents and carers at all times. Our aim is to produce happy and confident children in a secure environment. We understand that the children will experience some apprehension as well as excitement at the prospect of starting school. Please feel free to discuss any matters that are of concern to you. There are plenty of opportunities to meet the staff both formally and informally to discuss your child`s progress and we are always happy to answer any questions you may have.
Punctuality and Attendance: Please make every effort to make sure your child not only attends school regularly, but also arrives punctually
Morning Nursery;

Infant Department:

We are very safety conscious and if someone other than the usual parent is collecting your child pleases let us know. Knelston has a healthy eating policy. Every child is offered milk while at school. This is free to all Foundation Phase and Infant children. If your child is unable to drink milk, please ensure the staff are aware of this. In Nursery/Reception the children are also offered fruit as a snack. Parents are asked to make a small payment for this fruit with any excess money being used to purchase further equipment for the Nursery. In year 1 and 2 classes children are invited to buy a piece of fruit from the Fruit Tuck Shop.

Forest School Older children(Junior) use tools, such as saws, billhooks, knives, loppers and peelers. These are all used safely and the children are taught how to respect the tools and care for themselves and others so that a safe work area is maintained. Skills such as using a map and compass, identifying trees and team building are developed.
Forest School provides an opportunity for the students to use the extensive grounds of Knelston Primary School to experience nature and explore the outdoor environment.
Fires are created regularly and we have strict fire policy which ensures that even the youngest children can safely be involved in making a fire. The more advanced activities such as tool use and fires will only be undertaken when the staff are happy that the children are disciplined enough to follow instructions and no harm will occur. The children have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and have learnt a multitude of new skills which complement those achieved within the classroom. The activities help to promote self-esteem and independence in the children that undertake the sessions and therefore the sessions are child led and are organic and flexible. The Juniors undertake more structured sessions which complement the curriculum covering topics within the Science and Geography curriculum. The children are able to explore and investigate the natural environment in a controlled, safe location where there is no risk of getting into serious difficulty and they can judge what they are capable of themselves. Some activities involve den building and moving large branches within the wood. The children are taught how to move sticks carefully and work together in a team to move large objects.

Curriculum Educational visits, field studies, use of the local environment and visiting artisans are all seen as experiences to complement and enrich our school curriculum and are regularly incorporated into class work.
Year 5 pupils – Residential Visit to Llangrannog.
Special Educational Needs. Children who have special educational needs are integrated into mainstream classes, with the Classteacher and SENCO jointly consulting on Individual Educational Programmes of Education. Extra help is available, while staffing resources allow for pupils who do not have a statement but are considered to require support. Learning Support Assistants provide support under the management and guidance of the Classteacher and SENCO. Every effort is made to provide for pupils who are more able and who need to be “Challenged Further”. The school has a policy for Special Educational Needs, which can be viewed on request. Similarly there is an Able & Talented Policy available for viewing
Religious Education and Collective Worship. Religious Education is a compulsory element within the curriculum and is taught in accordance with the Local Education Authority`s Agreed Syllabus. It is taught as far as possible, through the theme studied by the class, with emphasis on Christianity while recognising other faiths. A collective act of worship is undertaken every day. Children whose parents do not wish them to attend collective worship can have alternative provision made. Regular contributions to the school assemblies from such diverse organisations and representatives as N.C.H., Barnardos, Coastguard and various religious ministers. A Monday Club is run on a Monday lunchtime by representatives of local Religious groups - this is an activity that any child can join if they so wish. Parents can withdraw their child from this activity if they so wish. The school has policies for Religious Education and Collective Worship, which can be viewed on request.
Use of Welsh Language. Welsh is taught as a second language. The school follows teaching schemes and resources recommended by the local education authority, which mainly aim for oral proficiency. However, the National Curriculum requires certain levels of competence in writing and reading Welsh, which children will be expected to attain by year 6. It is the school`s aim to use the Welsh Language in such a way as to ensure that children see, her and use it as a natural part of school life. It is given a prominent role in many school activities. Children also have an opportunity to learn about the culture and heritage, as well as the language of Wales, through such activities as St. David`s Day celebrations.
Access for Disabled Pupils. Main doors are all extra wide opening. We have ramps to the main school and Early Years buildings.
Sex Education The Governing Body has adopted the LEA Guidelines for sex education. Our policy is available for viewing at school.
Our teaching of Welsh is supported by the team of peripatetic Welsh teachers, “Athrawon Bro” , who work alongside teachers and pupils in promoting the Welsh Language.

Homework
them away unless they are unwell or there is some family crisis.
Children are encouraged to take reading books home every night to read to someone at home. Parents are asked to become involved with their child`s learning by supervising and supporting all work done at home and by encouraging him/her with their homework. It is difficult, for example, to produce good work if there is a source of distraction, such as a television set switched on in the same room. With proper concentration no child will be overburdened and there will be plenty of time for fresh air and recreation. Homework helps the cultivation of the good habits of private study – an invaluable form of self-discipline and is in itself a preparation for the later stages of education.
If your child is away due to ill health, we ask that you contact the school (by telephone if possible) on the first day of illness to say that your child is not expected. In this way we can be sure that your child is safe. At the same time, you can give us an indication of approximately how long your child will be away from school, and can let us know if you require homework for your child if he/she is well enough to do it. We will require a written note when your child returns to school, as this is kept with the register as a record of absences.
Each child is issued with a “Home – School Link book” and parents are asked to sign it when they have heard their child read and also to put any relevant comments that they feel that the teacher needs.
Attendance Information. If your child is due to attend a medical, doctor, dental or optician appointment, please let us know in advance either by sending the appointment card or a written note to school. This will be recorded in the register as an authorised absence.
If your child must take prescribed medicines in school, we require you to complete a form “Request for the administration of prescribed medicine in school” (Appendix C), available from the school secretary or downloadable from our web-site. This is for safety reasons and in your child`s interests. Medicines that we administer must be those that can be taken by the child themselves (e.g. tablets or medicine.) Education Welfare Officers are employed by the authority to act as liaison between parents and school. They are much more than attendance officers of the past and are now more like social workers attached to the education service. However, one of their tasks remains the enforcement of rules concerning school attendance The E.W.O. can also help with information concerning free school meals and any other matter affecting your child`s welfare. Ms. Gabriella Gatica is the E.W.O. attached to Knelston Primary School. The school enjoys a close working relationship with her. Parents are allowed to take up to ten days out of term time per school year for family holidays. Obviously, if at all possible, it would be better for your child not to miss school, as they may miss an important piece of work. However, if this is unavoidable, you are required to complete a form “Request for leave of absence for annual holiday”, available from the school secretary or downloadable from our web-site.(Appendix B)
Children soon get behind in their work if they miss even odd days from school, so please do not keep
