Their needs may change during their time in school and we have to adapt accordingly. We wish to help the children understand the world in which they live and to provide skills which will become relevant in adult life. The school emphasises the development of language and encourages the ability to question, discuss and communicate ideas and concepts. We wish to foster personal and moral values whilst at the same time show respect for the religious values of other races, creeds and cultures. We also wish to encourage the appreciation of human achievements in the sciences and in the 6 Pontarddulais Primary School - School Prospectus 2010/2011

Supervision Arrangements
The Headteacher is on duty each morning from 8.40 am to 8.50 am when school starts. The children are supervised each playtime by staff in both the infant and junior yards. During the lunch hour a member of the teaching staff and seven Supervisory Assistants are on duty. Teachers are frequently on the premises for several hours after school finishes but are only responsible for their pupils until 3.30 pm –unless there are extra curricular activities.
Attendance A high priority is placed on regular attendance.
It is important for all absences (whether planned or unexpected) to be explained. A phone call or written note needs to be submitted for any absence or when early release from school is requested. All unauthorized absences are reported to the Educational Welfare Officer. Medical certificates may be requested in some instances. The school adopts a strict yet positive attitude towards attendance and will be willing to discuss any problems that arise. A Home School Agreement is in place. We encourage regular communication between the home and school so that good relationships can be maintained. Children who are ill for more than a few days can have work sent home on request. We expect all pupils to arrive in school before the buzzer rings at 8.50 a.m. Punctuality is seen as an important personal quality. If your child is unavoidably delayed in the morning please inform the school. Supervision cannot be guaranteed before 8.40 a.m. so we would ask pupils not to arrive before this time. In bad weather the children are allowed into the school and should go into their classrooms. In normal circumstances the children should play in the yard and then line up when the buzzer is sounded in order to enter the school building with their teachers. It is important that you contact the school (by 9.30am if possible) if your child will not be coming to school due to ill health or other problems. We will try to contact the home by 10.30 am if the class teacher is concerned about an unexplained absence. Similarly, we need to be aware of medical, dental, optician appointments so that absences are recorded as authorised. 8 Pontarddulais Primary School - School Prospectus 2010/2011

Pontarddulais Primary School Mrs J Rees is the Educational Welfare Officer attached to Pontarddulais Primary School and regularly visits the school to monitor school attendance. Mrs Rees can also act as liaison between parents and school at times of difficulty in a supportive role. She will undertake punctuality spot-checks, scrutinise registers for absence patterns and talk to classes and the whole school about the importance of regular attendance and punctuality. Parents are allowed to take up to ten days out of term time per school year for family holidays and this is at the discretion of the school. Although it would be better to avoid missing important work, we appreciate that there is no alternative for some parents. In this case it is necessary to fill out a holiday request from, this will be returned to you, outlining whether the absence is granted and whether the absence will be recorded as authorised or unauthorised and why. More than ten days absence for holidays per year will not be authorised. The school has consistently achieved above 90% attendance but the LEA wishes all schools to improve further. The Headteacher has undertaken an evaluation and review of the Attendance Policy with the EWO. A leaflet on punctuality and attendance for parents has been devised. We operate a weekly, inter-class competition around attendance and punct ual i t y.Let t er swi l lbes entt opar ent si ft hei rchi l d’ sat t endancefal l sbel ow90%.If this is persistent, a referral will be made to Mrs Julie Rees who will explore the reasons for absence with parents and strategies put in place in order to increase attendance. Parents are asked to ensure their child arrives at school punctually. Parents are asked to sign a Home/School Agreements.

The School Curriculum
The child is central to our curriculum, its content and implementation. We aim to nurture in all our pupils positive attitudes to learning which will enable them to adapt to new ideas and methods, and thereby achieve their full potential. We believe in making full use of the chi l dr en’ si nt er es t sandpr ov i der i chfi r s thandexper i enceswhi chactasas t i mul ust o learning and actively involve pupils in such a way that what they learn becomes truly a part of them. Children do not see the boundaries between one form of knowledge and another since they are intertwined at this stage. The school curriculum follows the requirements of the National Curriculum 2008 and had a complete review for academic year 2009 - 2010. Early Years and Year 1/2 implement the principles of the Foundation Phase. Here the learning is based around structured play with time also being spent outdoors. This follows the principles of early education which have been utilised so very successfully in Scandinavian countries for example, for many years. The planning for this is organised under the Foundation Phase headings devised by the Welsh Assembly Government. This style of teaching for learning enables the pupils to enjoy the full benefits of structured play. However Year 2 begin to learn in a slightly more formal way in preparation for Year 3. In 2010-11 the school will report to Year 2 parents on pupil progress against the National Curriculum 2000 levels of attainment in English, Mathematics and Science. Years 3 to 6 pupils follow a themed approach to deliver the curriculum, where as many of the National Curriculum subjects are taught within a theme including RE. Literacy and Numeracy are taught as separate subjects during morning sessions and are applied as skills during the teaching of the Foundation Subjects in the afternoon sessions. Weekly timetables are followed to ensure coverage of the National Curriculum. Delivery of the theme is as practical as possible allowing for pupils to develop their Key Skills, which include Communication, Number, ICT and Thinking. We also promote working with others, improving our own performance and problem-solving through our approach to the curriculum. Talking is promoted to enrich learning, t her efor emuchofourpupi l s ’ l ear ni ngt akespl acei ngr oups although there are times when individual and whole class learning is appropriate. The ICT suite is timetabled to allow equal access to the technology and to allow bodies of learning to be accessed using computer technology. We also have computers in classrooms for use in promoting ICT in all lessons. Wherever possible the pupils are taught about Wales and their heritage through Cwricwlwm Cymreig and are taught to understand and use simple Welsh patterns in the oral and written forms. 11 Pontarddulais Primary School - School Prospectus 2010/2011

Pontarddulais Primary School All lessons are differentiated to meet the needs of all pupils. Pupils participate in the Social Emotional Aspects of Learning programme aimed at developing Personal and Social Skills.
Sporting Aims and Provision for Sport
As a school we aim to provide opportunities for all pupils to both enjoy sport and develop a wide range of skills, which enable them to actively participate in different sports. Physical and Health Education is a very important part of the curriculum, and pupils are given every encouragement and support. They undertake gymnastics, dance, games, athletics, swimming and outdoor adventurous activities. We have a traversing wall on site as well as extensive grounds for orienteering. The school makes full use of its sports field and large playgrounds. The staff have received PESS training on teaching outdoor adventure activities. .The school is particularly fortunate that our junior department (KS2) is involved in the Swansea swimming programme. The school aims for all children to leave the school with confidence in water skills. We offer a variety of extra curriculum sports clubs e.g. Rugby, football, netball, gymnastics, cross-country, cricket, athletics etc. and playtime games are organised through a zoning system, where pupils can further develop their individual and team skills. Pontarddulais Primary School was crowned Swansea Schools Sport School of the year for 2008/9 and 2009/10 and its achievement for 2009/10 include: Runners-upi nt he‘ RayBeechRugbyCup’ ( r eachedt hefi nali n5outoft helast 6 years). Two of our pupils were awarded their West Wales caps. In line with the City and County of Swansea Education Authority guidelines, the school takes into account the new Special Educational Needs Code of Practice. This Code of Practice is a guide for schools about the practical help they can give children with SEN. The school has a policy statement on special needs provision. The children’ sneedsar e identified and action is taken to meet those needs as early as possible, working with parents. Our school is dyslexia friendly, with an SEN teacher trained to help pupils with dyslexic tendencies. The aim of this graduated response is to ensure that the school systematically identifies, assesses and provides for the children with special educational needs. Teaching Assistants are employed to support pupils either on a 1-1 basis or within whole class situations, using multi-sensory techniques and a range of practical resources as appropriate. Children with learning difficulties have Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and there is close liaison between their class teachers, the SEN Support Teacher (and Teaching Assistant where appropriate) and parents in their implementation. There is a part-time support teacher for children with SEN who is qualified to support children with English and other difficulties. Currently, the school supports pupils in small groups or individually for English, Mathematics, Speech and Language, emotional, behavioural and coordination difficulties 13 Pontarddulais Primary School - School Prospectus 2010/2011

A large amount of data regarding pupil achievement in Year Six is transferred to the Secondary School prior to transition to ensure that levels of achievement are known prior to Year Seven pupils arriving. As required by the Welsh Assembly Government, a Transition Plan has been put in place for academic year 2010/11.

The Governing Body has agreed that certain visits out of school should be dependent upon voluntary contributions from parents. Parent Teacher and Friends Association
Our Parents Teacher and Friends Association meet regularly to organize fund raising events at the school. All the money raised goes towards purchasing equipment for the school as well as books and educational visits. An open invitation is extended to all parents to attend the meetings and also support funding raising events.

Hospital or other Appointments during School Time
Pupils may be collected from school in order to deep a hospital appointment. It is not possible, for road safety reasons, for a child to leave school early in order to meet a parent outside.
School Inspection
During the Spring Term 2005 a team of Estyn Inspectors visited the school. Including personal r el at i ons hi psandpas t or alcar eandgui dance… This is an exceptional result indicating that the school is performing at a level well in excess of normal standards.
Pastoral care
We practise a code of pastoral care, which endeavours to foster good relationships. Our children are given, through example and through their learning experiences, opportunities to develop good social skills and behaviour. Each class teacher is concerned, not only for the educational progress, but also for the personal and social development for your child. We try to combine high expectations with a sensitive approach. Sometimes problems do occur and we involve parents sooner rather than leave it until later and we hope you as parents, will do the same. Changes in home circumstances can cause your child to behave differently at school; just as worry over work or falling out with a friend can cause you problems at home. We guarantee the confidentiality of any discussion. Visits offer children rich learning opportunities and we frequently take our pupils out into the local community and beyond. Parents are always informed of such visits and we ensure that adequate supervision and care is provided at all times. Pupils in their final year are given increased responsibilities and are encouraged to set a good example to younger pupils through displaying a mature attitude in their conduct and the way they relate to all adults and each other. It is vital that they develop a spirit of independence and self-discipline. In the event of a pupil taken ill or sustaining a minor injury, the parent or guardian is informed and appropriate arrangements are made. Emergency services are summoned in the case of major injuries and immediately parents are informed. From time to time, the school nurse, dentist and hearing specialist will visit the school to carry out routine health inspections, sight and hearing tests. Ethos-School Discipline
The school policy is to create a warm, secure atmosphere and an aesthetically pleasing environment in which the welfare and the development of the child is the central focus. The school ethos aims to create individual care and co-operation between teacher and pupil, and between pupil and pupil. It is very important that parents are familiar with our whole school policy on behaviour. A copy of our Prospectus and Early Years Brochure is given to all new parents as soon as their child starts school and our Home School Agreement is given to all parents annually. We actively encourage their support in the promotion of good behaviour and the above documents outline our thinking and procedure. All parents are asked to read our Home, School Agreement and return it signed indicating that they have received the documentation and are happy to support our policy. Pupil discipline is essential to allow all pupils equal access. A positive Behaviour Management system operates within the school. Good behaviour is rewarded through Friday afternoon fun, when enrichment activities are offered to pupils. Extremely well behaved pupils are invited to eat their lunch on the Golden Table. If there is persistent poor behaviour then par ent sar eas kedt oat t endameet i ngats choolt odi s cus st hepupi l ’ sbehav i ouri nor derfor strategies to be put in place to rectify the situation. Persistent poor behaviour can lead to a Behaviour Report book being implemented which will be sent home on a daily basis. More serious behaviour issues can lead to a referral to the LEA Behaviour Support Team following consent from parents or possible fixed term exclusion. These are in extreme cases.
Inspection of Documents
Documents required to be made available by regulation, may be inspected and where appropriate, copied at the school during school hours by arrangement with the Headteacher.
Information about how to make a complaint
There is a Complaints Policy within the school. Parents who have any concerns should contact us at once. Minor complaints will be dealt with by the class teacher after first drawing the matter to the attention of the Headteacher. Serious complaints must be explained to the Headteacher who will arrange for an investigation to take place. In the absence of the Headteacher the Deputy Headteacher will take responsibility for the above. If the complaint has not been resolved the Governors will be informed. If the problem is still unresolved the matter will be referred to the Director of Education in writing. Details 21 Pontarddulais Primary School - School Prospectus 2010/2011
