The Swansea Festival 2014, October 4th-18th, will be a double celebration. Special events marking the Centenary of Dylan Thomas are included as major contributions to the year-long Dylan Thomas 100 Festival, supported by the Welsh Government, and the opening concert by the Philharmonia Orchestra will mark the relaunch of the Brangwyn Hall following its restoration. The programme will include Welsh National Opera, the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales and the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra plus a range of arts at venues across the City.

Bydd Gwyl ˆ Abertawe 2014, Hydref 4ydd-18ed, yn ddathliad dwbl. Mae digwyddiadau arbennig wedi’u cynnwys sy’n nodi Canmlwyddiant Dylan Thomas fel cyfraniadau pwysig i Wyl ˆ Dylan Thomas 100 sy’n rhedeg gydol y flwyddyn dan nawdd Llywodraeth Cymru, a bydd y cyngerdd agoriadol gan Gerddorfa’r Philharmonia yn ail-lansio Neuadd Brangwyn yn dilyn y gwaith adfer. Mae’r rhaglen yn cynnwys Opera Cenedlaethol Cymru, Cerddorfa a Chorws Cenedlaethol Cymreig y BBC a Cherddorfa Ffilharmonig Stad Rwsia ynghyd ag ystod o gelfyddydau mewn cyrchfannau ar draws y Ddinas.

2014 is a great year for Swansea to be making the most of its cultural events, with the eyes of the world on the city due to the centenary of the birth of Dylan Thomas; we have a fantastic opportunity to make our mark on the international cultural circuit. With Dylan Thomas very much in our minds, I would like to dedicate this year’s Festival to him and the legacy and impact that his work has given the city.

Dylan & Caitlin Thomas

W

Welcome

Mae 2014 yn flwyddyn fawr i Abertawe ddathlu digwyddiadau diwylliannol, gyda llygaid y byd ar y Ddinas oherwydd canmlwyddiant geni Dylan Thomas; dyma gyfle gwych i wneud argraff ar y byd diwylliannol rhyngwladol. Gyda Dylan Thomas yn amlwg yn ein meddyliau, hoffwn gyflwyno Gwyl ˆ eleni iddo ac i’r gymynrodd a’r hwb a roddodd ei waith i’r ddinas.

I would also like to extend the dedication to my predecessor, Huw Tregelles Williams, who has given over ten years service to the Festival, bringing us all a wonderful array of concerts, orchestras and events that have helped enliven the city and make the Festival what it is today. We owe him a great deal of gratitude and I’m sure we will all enjoy his final year’s programme.

Hoffwn ymestyn y cyflwyniad hefyd i’m rhagflaenydd, Huw Tregelles Williams, a roddodd dros ddeng mlynedd o wasanaeth i’r Wyl, ˆ gan ddod ag ystod o gyngherddau gwych, cerddorfeydd a digwyddiadau i fywhau’r ddinas a gwneud yr Wyl ˆ yr hyn y mae heddiw. Mae ein diolch yn ddyledus iddo ac rwy’n sicr y mwynhewn raglen ei flwyddyn derfynol.

As we look to the future, I hope that we can continue to celebrate and develop the work and legacies that both Dylan Thomas and Huw Tregelles Williams have given us and ensure that the Swansea Festival stands as a centre piece of the city’s cultural programme for many years to come.

Wrth edrych i’r dyfodol, gobeithio y gallwn ddatblygu a dathlu’r gwaith a roddwyd inni gan Dylan Thomas a Huw Tregelles Williams er mwyn sicrhau bod Gwyl ˆ Abertawe yn sefyll fel canolbwynt i raglen ddiwylliannol y Ddinas am lawer blwyddyn i ddod.

Afrovibes 20 years of democracy ‘In 1994 a new nation was born and since then our artists have been showing the world that South Africa has stories to tell, stories that speak to the collective memory of who we are, yet at the same time, weave new narratives that speak of life in South Africa today – stories that link us with the world’

Afrovibes is a festival of music, theatre and dance celebrating twenty years of democracy in South Africa. In Swansea, Afrovibes will include The Soil, Rainbow Scars, Biko’s Quest and 7 Pillars. In Rainbow Scars, Mike Van Graan, one of South Africa’s most brilliantly incisive playwrights, confronts the question of racial identity head on, probing the universal issue of adoption. The Soil is an award-winning threemember a cappella group coming to Swansea direct from the Apollo in Harlem. 7 Pillars is a collaboration between Vuyani Dance Theatre from Johannesburg and ACE Dance & Music Birmingham, marking years of democracy in South Africa.
